Politics / how DPO shot subsidy protesters by dtemidare: 2:51am On Jul 17, 2013
Two witnesses on Tuesday told an Ikeja High Court how a police officer, Segun Fabunmi, allegedly shot at some persons during the protest over the removal of fuel subsidy in January 2012.

The witnesses, Messrs Adekunle Alabi and Alimi Abubakar, made the allegation while testifying at the trial of Fabunmi, a former DPO of Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege, Lagos.

Fabunmi, who was dismissed from the police force after the incidence, is being prosecuted for allegedly shooting Adedamola Daramola to death during the protest on January 9th, 2012.

He was also accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Abubakar and two other protesters– Egbujor Samuel and Chibuzo Udo– by separately shooting at them with his gun.

Fabunmi had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted a N250 million bail by Justice Olabisi Akinlade.

The witnesses, who were led in evidence by Mrs Olabisi Ogungbesan, Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), identified Fabunmi as the officer who shot at the protesters.

Abubakar told the court that he and some other persons, including the deceased Daramola, had gathered at Yaya Abatan Junction, Agege, to read newspapers.

He said a police team led by the accused arrived at about 8:00 a.m. and one of the officers started shooting in the air and towards the ground to scare them.

‘The accused snatched the gun from him and started shooting at us as we were standing at the junction,  I can’t tell how many times he fired, but I was hit by a bullet on my leg

Daramola was standing by my side and the bullet also injured him, he ran towards Abeokuta Street, while I ran into a nearby mosque,’’ Abubakar said.

The witness said he saw Fabunmi chasing some people, including the deceased toward Abeokuta Street, from where he was hiding inside the mosque.

He, however, said he did not see Fabunmi shooting at Daramola because he was in hiding.

Abubakar said he was rushed by some boys, alongside the badly injured Daramola, to the Ifako General Hospital, after the police had left.

The witness said Daramola later died as a result of the gun wounds, while he was referred to another hospital for treatment.

Testifying, Alabi, a resident of Yaya Abatan area, said he saw Fabunmi as he snatched the gun from another policeman and shot straight at the protesters.

He said the deceased, who was a tailor, was among the boys that were injured after the alleged shooting spree.

“I saw everything from my house where I was hiding. After the police left, I came out and I saw a bullet which I gave to the Baale (head) of the community. Some policemen later came and took my statement and asked me to come and give evidence in court.’’

The matter was adjourned to October 25 for continuation of trial.

Foreign Affairs / Italian Senator Likens A Black Minister To Orangutan by dtemidare: 4:53pm On Jul 14, 2013
A leading Italian senator has been chastised by Premier Enrico Letta for likening the country’s first black Cabinet minister to an orangutan, the latest high-profile racist episode in a nation grappling with immigration.

Letta in a statement Sunday denounced Roberto Calderoli’s words as “inacceptable” and “beyond every limit”. Calderoli, the Senate’s vice-president and a leader of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, later said he was making a joke and meant no offense to Cecile Kyenge, a Congolese-born doctor who is the country’s immigration minister.

The Northern League isn’t in the government but has been the closest ally of former Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right party, which is Letta’s main partner in the coalition government.

Italian media quoted Kyenge as saying she had nothing to say to Calderoli.

Health / Switzerland To Produce Condoms For Children by dtemidare: 9:16pm On Jul 13, 2013
The Swiss Aids Federation has thrown its weight behind the production of condoms for children aged between 12 and 14 years old.

The smaller sized condoms are the result of a study by the Federal Commission on Children and Youth which revealed that teenagers in Switzerland were having unprotected sex because they could not find condoms that fit them.

The study also found that more children younger than 14 are sexually active than there was in the 1990s.

The condoms are 45 mm in diameter instead of the standard 49 to 56 mm diameter and will be distributed through schools.

The box with six condoms can also be bought at shops for $7.

Politics / Jonathan’s Approval Needed To Demolish Amigo Supermarket by dtemidare: 1:44pm On Jun 08, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan is in receipt of a forceful request by state security agents recommending the immediate demolishing of one of Abuja’s most popular supermarket, Amigos, but has surprisingly withheld an approval more than a week after investigators sealed the supermarket for its Lebanese owners alleged terrorism link.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how officials excavated ‘boxes’ from minor excavation works within Amigo. A security official involved in the activities however said no major weapons were recovered from the boxes, contrary to rumours, with only a pistol found in one of them.
Sources at the Department of State Security Service, SSS, told PREMIUM TIMES that the president has refused to communicate his decision on the matter to the Service, more than 72 hours, as is usual with reports sent by the department; stalling further work on the case, and raising concerns he may veto the proposal.

While the department recommends, in the report sent on Monday, that the sprawling mall, estimated at more than N5 billion be bulldozed and the area thoroughly frisked for concealed arms, it suggests Abuja’s biggest amusement park, Wonderland, also owned by the Lebanese, be immediately revoked by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA.

The property hosting the park is said to be owned by the Abuja administration and was only leased to the group for 10 years, our sources say.

With days passing and without a firm response from the president to what the SSS believes is need of urgent attention, investigators fear the proposal may be turned down by the president.

“We have sent in our report, but we can’t proceed without an approval by the president on such a matter of National Security,” a senior official of the SSS involved in the investigations said.
SSS spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, did not respond to phone calls seeking to get the agency’s official reaction and next line of action.

The president’s office did not also respond to request for response to this story. Emailed request for comments to presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, on why the president has not decided, was unanswered; while his mobile telephone number was not available as at the time of this report.
Reasons for seeking demolition

Officials well briefed about Amigos / Wonderland investigations say the SSS’ recommendation that the supermarket be pulled down is based on three reasons: first, the security agency believes the place was used for stockpiling weapons.

Also, investigators they have evidence that proceeds of sales from the multi-billion enterprise have been used in funding terrorism; and lastly, the SSS is concerned a new administration after Jonathan’s may reallocate the property to the Lebanese group.

The last scenario is reflected upon the well-known case of the Indian business group, Vaswani brothers, who were deported by the Obasanjo administration for money laundering but were ushered back into the country at the advent of a successor administration of Umaru Yar’Adua in 2007.

The Jonathan administration has already faced criticisms for its response to what investigators say is a clear terrorism case, after the authorities took more than 24 hours since the discovery of weapons in Kano last week, before shutting down property linked to the suspects, including Amigos and Wonderland, both in the heart of the Nigerian capital. The Abuja property were sealed on Friday night while the Nigerian military had revealed the discovered weapons in a Kano property on Thursday evening.

A new bill before the House of Representatives has proposed stiff penalties for employers of labour in both the public and private sectors who fail to pay or delay the payment of workers’ salaries.

The bill passed second reading on Tuesday, getting the support of the majority of lawmakers at a session presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.

It also proposes that underpayment of workers’ wages; pension and emolument will attract sanctions.

According to the sponsor of the bill and House Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, the penalties will include the loss of 10 to 20 per cent of the value of the delayed salary.

He explained that after a salary delay of one week, the employer would begin to lose percentages of the salary, which would be added to the employee’s pay.

Gbajabiamila said, “Late payment or no payment of salary encourages corruption. People are forced to seek unlawful means to meet their financial and family obligations. It is our responsibility as legislators to protect the welfare of the citizenry. There is no point saying you have a job, yet no pay.

“This bill prescribes a period, beginning from seven days; the employer will pay a percentage in addition to the salary. From 10 per cent, it can rise to 20 per cent, and so on.”

Another member, Mr. Jerry Manwe, blamed the problem of non-payment of salaries on employers’ greed.

He said a practice common in some government agencies was to lodge workers’ salaries in fixed deposit accounts to yield interests for “some greedy officials, who keep telling the suffering workers that there is no money.”

Also backing the bill, Mr. Godfrey Gaiya, observed that employment was a contract between the employer and the employee.

“A labourer deserves his wage,” he said.

An attempt by the House Deputy Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, to oppose the bill, however, failed.

Ogor claimed that criminalising salary delays or non-payment of salaries could lead to “more problems that the bill intends to solve.”

He argued that some delays could be caused by “cash-flow challenges and not that the employer does not want to pay.”

But, his position on the bill was defeated by a majority voice vote endorsing it.

MY ANALYSIS OF THE EXTRACT ABOVE IS PURE PROPAGANDA, SPONSORED REPORT BY THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE AND TOTAL PRAISE SINGING OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WHOSE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY IS TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY OF ITS CITIZENS BUT HAVE FAILED SEVERALLY TO LIVE UP TO ITS RESPOSIBILITIES. THIS REPORT IS JUST A PLOY TO SAVE ITS FACE FROM THE MESS IT HAS DRAGGED ITSELF INTO. WITH THEIR SPECIAL FORCE HOW HAVE THEY SOLVED CASES OF INSECURITY, TERRORISM (BH)OTHER THAN LETTING TERROR SUSPECTS ESCAPE FROM ITS CUSTODY.

LET ME QUICKLY REMIND YOU OF ITS RECENT FAILURES

1. AHMED YUSUF WAS ARRESTED WAS BY THE SSS AND HANDED OVER TO THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE, WHAT DID THEY DO THEY LET HIM ESCAPE AND EVENTUALLY KILLED HIM.

2. SEVERAL TERROR SUSPECTS HAVE BEEN LET LOOSE BY THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE. WHERE DO I START FROM. A LONG LIST OF THEM.

3. SANI MOHAMMED A TERROR SUSPECT RECENTLY ESCAPED CUSTODY IN THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE ABUJA.

4. OTEDOLA AND FAROUK LAWAN SAGA THE POLICE NEVER HANDLED IT WELL, THEY TOOK SIDES WITH POLITICIANS AND HANDLED IT LIKE THE HANDLE OTHER CASES OF NATIONAL SECURITY THAT WAS BROUGHT TO ITS DOOR STEP.

5. THE NIGERIAN POLICE HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN NUMEROUS NUMBER OF EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS. THATS WHY BH NVR STOPS KILLING......

6. THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE ESCALATED THE BOKO HARAM ISSUE TO WHAT ITS IS TODAY. HOW ARE WE SURE THEY HAVE NOT KILLED ALL THE TERROR SUSPECTS IN THEIR CUSTODY.

MY ADVICE TO THEM IS TO DO THEIR JOB EFFECTIVELY, EFFICIENTLY WITHOUT BIAS AND SET THEIR MINDS AWAY FROM SELF GLORIFICATION AND PUBLIC PRAISE SINGING. IF THEY DO THEIR JOB WELL THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY WILL SEE IT,NIGERIANS WILL SEE IT. IF THEY DONT KNOW NIGERIANS ARE TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THEM.

Politics / Kenyan Mother Names her Twins Barrack And MITT Romney by dtemidare: 10:04am On Nov 08, 2012
A Kenyan mother has named her new-born twins after US President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the BBC reports.

Millicent Owuor, 20, gave birth to the twins in south-west Kenya on the day Obama was re-elected.

A short distance from the hospital, at the Obama family’s ancestral village, people were celebrating his victory.

“I named the first twin Barack and the second one Mitt,” Owuor was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Owuor posed for photographers on Wednesday at the Siaya District Hospital with her twin boys.

She said she had named her twins after the winning and losing US presidential candidates in order to remember the day of the vote, Kenya’s Standard newspaper reports.

The US president’s father was born in Kenya and his step-grandmother, Sarah Obama, still lives in the village of Kogelo.

The residents of Kogelo sang and danced after Obama was declared the winner.

“The reason why he has won is because God has given it to him,” said Sarah Obama, who turns 90 this year.

“Secondly, he has got the knowledge to love all people, he doesn’t have the knowledge of division, that is why he has won.”

Barack Obama senior died in a road accident in Kenya in 1982.
