PoliticsJonathan Approves Training For Ministers by dtemidare(op): 5:49am On Oct 31, 2012
T President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval for the National Orientation Agency “to organise a value orientation programme for the Federal Executive Council as a component part of the Federal Government’s Transformation Agenda.”

The Director-General of NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the commencement of the second phase of NOA’s Patriotism and Ethics First training programme.

The programme was organised for government-owned media practitioners, security officers and public servants.

Omeri, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Odeniyi, said, “NOA is already working out modalities for the orientation programme and the President was of the conviction that leadership must blaze the trail in creating the required attitude change for national transformation.”

Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, who performed the formal inauguration of the training, observed that although the media remained a strategic part of the President’s Transformation Agenda, “they have done little to foster unity in a nation of diverse groups.”

Minister of Environment, Hadjia Hadiza Ibrahim-Mailafia, stressed the need for change in the country and noted the relevance of every individual Nigerian in the nation’s transformation process.

PoliticsHeavy Security Over Fayose Planned Meeting In Ekiti by dtemidare(op): 5:38am On Oct 31, 2012
There was tension in Ilawe-Ekiti on Tuesday following the announcement that former state Governor Ayo Fayose was scheduled to hold a meeting with some members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the town at 2pm.

Tight security was mounted by policemen and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

About 12 police vans, loaded with armed policemen were seen at the main entry point to the town. Some policemen were strategically positioned on one side of the road while some youths took control at the other side.

Sources close to Fayose told journalists, who were present in the town, that the former governor was still considering whether to attend the meeting or not as at 4pm.

The source said Fayose had sought the protection of the operatives of State Security Service when he learnt that some youths had laid ambush for him along the road leading to the town.

However, an aide to the former governor told the journalists, “Oga has gone back to Afao (his home town) because of the threats to his life.”

Around 4.30pm, some miscreants made bonfires on the road.

The Director-General of Ayo Fayose Campaign Organisation, Mr. Gboyega Oguntuase, told our correspondent on the telephone that Fayose was in Ilawe for the meeting.

He, however, did not say who the former governor met with or where he held the meeting.

Oguntuase restated the accusation he leveled against the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria.

He said the party was behind the threats to the lives of Fayose and other PDP members.

He said the Federal Government might be forced to declare emergency rule in the state if the crisis degenerated into complete breakdown of law and order.

ACN’s spokesperson in the state, Chief Tai Oguntayo, denied AFCO’s allegation. He said, “Fayose is just afraid of his shadow.”

Oguntayo said ACN was a party known for its respect for rule of law and that members of the party were not Miscreants and did not believe in violence.

PoliticsJob Seekers Protest ‘dumping’ Of Applications by dtemidare(op): 5:25am On Oct 31, 2012
Young Nigerians seeking employment to the Immigration, Prisons, and Civil Defence Corps on Tuesday protested against the alleged “dumping” of their applications at the Ministry of Interior, Abuja.

The applicants, mainly university graduates, blocked the entrance to the ministry’s building and prevented visitors and officials from entering or leaving the premises.

Their action prompted the security personnel guarding the old secretariat in Area One where the ministry is located to fire some shots into the air to scare the angry youths away.

The applicants, our correspondent gathered, began to protest when they realised that their applications addressed to the ministry were dumped by the drainage in front of the building.

Job seekers had been submitting applications in the ministry since last September, when it was gathered that the Federal Government was recruiting personnel into the Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Fire Service.

Though a notice on a wall said submission of application closed on October 23, 2012, a quick check on the dumped applications, indicated that some were submitted on October 16.

A lady applicant, Joy Usman, described the action of the officials as provocative and disrespectful to “graduates, who, she said, suffered so much to graduate.

The Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Interior, Mr. Rotimi Akinyemi, could not be reached for comments, but another official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, insisted that the applications were thrown out because they were not submitted within the stipulated time.

CelebritiesLance Armstrong's Epic Downfall by dtemidare(op): 8:36pm On Oct 22, 2012
(CNN) - His reputation is in tatters, the cycling victories that made him a legend are wiped away, and the sponsors that gave him enormous wealth have fled faster than a downhill race to a finish line. But that's only the beginning.

Lance Armstrong is also being asked to pay back millions of dollars. And the term "Armstrong era" is now apparently a moniker for widespread cheating.

The epic downfall of cycling's star, once an idolized icon of millions around the globe, stands out in the history of professional sports.

His latest and biggest plunge came Monday when the International Cycling Union stripped the 41-year-old of his seven Tour de France titles.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling," said the union's president, Pat McQuaid, announcing that Armstrong is also banned from the sport.

Livestrong bracelet: To wear or not to wear?

The decision followed this month's finding by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that there is "overwhelming" evidence Armstrong was involved as a professional cyclist in "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program." Armstrong has steadfastly maintained his innocence.

McQuaid said he was "sickened" by the report.

But he emphasized, "Cycling has a future."

In a statement, the union wrote, "Today's young riders do not deserve to be branded or tarnished by the past or to pay the price for the Armstrong era."

PoliticsRe: Remodeled Lagos Airport Terminal Finished, To Be Commissioned by dtemidare: 10:04pm On Oct 21, 2012
taharqa: The newly remodelled General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, will be commissioned in Lagos on Monday, October 22, 2012 by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.

It will be the first terminal to be commissioned, among the 11 airports that are currently undergoing remodelling under the first phase of the Airport Remodelling Project.

According to the General Manager Corporate Services, of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Yakubu Dati, the new terminal occupies a total floor area of about 4000 square metres, with maximum passenger capacity of about 400, at peak periods.

Dati explained that the departures and arrivals lounges have been increased to about 829 square metres and 982 square metres, respectively while the check-in-area occupies an area of about 1550 square metres. The increase will make passenger facilitation and cargo processing faster and easier.

He said the story of the terminal began in November, 2011, when the old terminal building that was built in the 1950s was demolished. The new terminal underwent a total reconstruction from the foundation and the resulting edifice is a testimony to the resilience and determination towards turning around the aviation sector.

It would be recalled that on assumption of office as the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah, promised to transform the aviation industry, in line with the Transformation Agenda of the Federal Government. The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. George Uriese has pursued these goals and translated the vision to concrete reality under the direction of the Minister.

Recently, the Minister led an international road show which has attracted tremendous support from the international investors. Already an MoU has been signed between the governments of Nigeria and China for the construction of five new airport terminals in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port-Harcourt and Enugu.

PoliticsShareholder Wants Sanusi Prosecuted Over Cecilia Ibru’s Loot by dtemidare(op): 9:58am On Oct 19, 2012
A shareholder, Mr. Boniface Okezie, whose suit led to a judgment ordering the Central Bank of Nigeria to release information on the N191bn assets forfeited by Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, wants the CBN governor, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, to be prosecuted for his handling of the information on the stolen assets.

Okezie, the president of Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, made the request in a letter dated October 12, 2012 to the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, SAN.

A Federal High Court, Lagos, delivered the said judgment on October 2, 2012, ordering the apex bank to release the information on the assets forfeited by the convicted Ibru, a former Managing Director of Oceanic Bank Plc, within 72 hours.

Okezie had instituted the suit following CBN’s failure to release the information to him as ealier requested for under the Freedom of Information Act.

The shareholder, who wrote through his counsel, Mr. Chuks Nwachukwu, said with the judgment, “a case of wrongful denial of access to information is therefore firmly established against Mallam Lamido Sanusi, the Governor of CBN”.

He also called on the AGF to order “an immediate full scale investigation” of Sanusi and all persons connected with the assets recovered from the convicted former bank chief to establish what has become of those assets.

He said denying him access to the information by Sanusi before the judgment delivered on October 2, was wrongful, and was therefore liable to be prosecuted.

Nwachuku said, “He is liable to be prosecuted, and upon conviction, to a fine of N500,000 as provided at Sections 7(5) of the Freedom of Information Act.

“This letter is therefore to present you with a formal demand for the criminal preosecution of Mallam Lamido Sanusi in accordance with the law.

“I do believe that the seriousness of the offence is not lost on you.”

CBN’s Director of Communications, Mr. Ugo Okoroafor did not respond to the allegations as at presstime despite his earlier promise to do so.
