Politics / Barly 24hrs After Resumption Reps Demands N7million Increase In Salary by dtemidare: 11:24am On Sep 20, 2012
Members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday launched an agitation for a N7m increase in their quarterly allowances, barely 24 hours after resuming from a two-month recess.

Each member of the House currently enjoys N27m per quarter as allowances but the lawmakers want the sum jerked up to N35m, The PUNCH learnt.

Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, reportedly had a hectic time calming frayed nerves at an executive session on Wednesday.

Some of the lawmakers, in seeking an increased allowance, at the closed door session, reportedly raised questions of financial impropriety against the leadership of the House.

They reportedly questioned how the “N5m” budgeted for each member’s medical expenses and insurance was utilised by the House.

One of the lawmakers at the session told our correspondent that “transparency and accountability were the main issues discussed at the executive session.”

“There are 360 members; we have funds budgeted for medical allowances and insurance.

“If you put aside some funds for these sub-heads, which is about N5m, we have to know how this money is being utilised.”

Tambuwal was said to have used the session, which lasted for over two hours, to explain to his aggrieved colleagues that the leadership was transparent in the running of House accounts.

A source said he explained that the delay in the payment of pending allowances was caused by paucity of funds.

The speaker reportedly tried to convince members that there was the need to prudently manage resources.

He reportedly called for the account books of the House in a bid to convince his colleagues that no lawmaker’s funds had been taken for any unofficial purposes.

The PUNCH had stumbled on a text message circulated to members before Wednesday’s session by some lawmakers, who said they were launching a project to clean up the House.

The text message had invited members to a meeting originally scheduled for the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Thursday (today).

Investigations revealed that the House quickly went into an executive session on Wednesday in a bid to stop the meeting and use the opportunity to clear the air on any misgivings.

The text reads, “This is inviting all first term members of the House of Representatives to an urgent meeting and launching of the Project “OPERATION CLEAN.” Date; 20th Sept. 2012. Venue-Transcorp Hilton, Abuja Time: 11am prompt.”

However, following what a member described as “the elaborate explanations by the Speaker”, the conveners of the meeting were reportedly “satisfied and saw reason to call off the meeting.”

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, however denied that issues of increased allowances and use of the House funds were mentioned at the executive session.

“It is not true; there was nothing like that as far as I am concerned,” Mohammed said in a reply to The PUNCH enquiries.

He said the executive session deliberated on a meeting held between President Goodluck Jonathan, the President of the Senate, David Mark, and Tambuwal on Tuesday night.

Mohammed claimed that the Speaker used the session to inform members on what transpired between the three leaders at the Aso Rock Villa.

According to him, Jonathan raised the opposition by the National Assembly to the planned introduction of the N5000 note by the Central Bank of Nigeria with Mark and Tambuwal.

“He (Speaker) told members that the President was under the impression that the National Assembly queried the Executive on the policy”, Mohammed stated.

But, he said Mark and Tambuwal took time to explain to Jonathan why the proposed N5000 note was not necessary.

He added that the two leaders of the National Assembly told Jonathan that they had a constitutional responsibility to protect the wishes of Nigerians, whose suffering would be worsened by the N5000 denomination.

However, a separate source, who attended the meeting, confided in The PUNCH that Jonathan hinted that he would direct the Governor of the CBN, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, to stop the proposed policy, having heard the position of the National Assembly.

“It is a good thing that Mr. President has promised to ask Sanusi to stop this N5000 issue.

“He gave Mark and Tambuwal the assurance”, the source disclosed.

The Chairman of a major committee of the House, also said, “take it from me; Mr. President has said he would stop the policy.”

Crime / GF Poisons Boy Friend For Insufficiant Attention. by dtemidare: 10:41am On Sep 19, 2012
Pennsylvania woman allegedly poisoned her boyfriend with eyedrops on several occasions because she wanted more attention.

For years, Thurman Edgar Nesbitt III, 45, had been suffering from unexplained nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulty, and blood pressure fluctuations, according to ABC 27.

In July, Nesbitt's physician, Dr. Harry Johnston, began to suspect that his patient was being poisoned by tetrahydrozoline, the primary ingredient in over-the-counter eyedrops.

When a blood sample tested positive for tetrahydrozoline, Johnston contacted police in Fulton County, and state troopers questioned Nesbitt's girlfriend, 33-year-old Vickie Jo Mills.

Investigators say that that Mills, of McConnellsburg, admitted to putting Visine eye drops into Nesbitt's drinking water between 10 and 12 times since June 2009, the Herald-Mail reports. Mills stated that she "never meant to kill" Nesbitt, according to court documents, and that she "only wanted him to pay more attention to her."

She was charged with 10 counts apiece of aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, Public Opinion Online reports.

On Monday, Mills waived her right to a preliminary hearing. Her case will now go straight to county court.

Health / The New Anti- Rapist Condon by dtemidare: 7:19am On Sep 17, 2012
An anti-rape condom? Is it available in Nigeria? You are sure it will stop the devil from perfuming the act? I’m all for it. Even my daughters will wear it!

That was the reaction of Mrs. G.E. when informed that scientists have invented a female condom to protect women from rape. The new anti-rape condom, called “Rape-aXe,” is filled with sharp, microscopic barbs or hooks which automatically sticks to the penis during penetration. Once it latches on to the skin, the condom can only be removed surgically, which will mean that attackers will have to go to the hospital and risk getting caught.

The theory is that while the attacker is stunned and doubled- over with pain, the woman will have a chance to flee the scene before the rapist has a chance to do further damage to her

“It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on. If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn’t break the skin, and there’s no danger of fluid exposure,” the South African inventor, Dr. Sonnet Ehlers told CNN.

Ehlers developed the condom seven years ago and says it’s now ready for widespread use, About 30,000 free samples were distributed around the various South African cities where the 2010 World Cup football matches took place.

South Africa is the perfect testing ground for Rape-aXe, considering that one out of every four South African men say they have raped a woman. According to BBC, half of those men also admit to multiple rapes, and many say they’ve participated in gang rapes.

A 2009 report by the nation’s Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the past year. It is also believed that 16 percent of the population is living with HIV.

Ehlers, a retired blood technician was extremely alarmed by the high rape statistics in South Africa, which has one of the highest rates in the world. She decided to do something about it and came up with the Rape-aXe. According to her, she drew inspiration for the invention from a South Asian mythology and speculative fiction “the legend of the vagina dentata,” or “A vagina with a set of teeth.” The device was unveiled in August of 2005.

Rape-aXe a latex female condom, can be inserted by a woman, like a tampon, any time she feels threatened of sexual assault. According to Ehlers the devise went through proper research and development steps before its introduction.

‘I consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe,’ she said.

“That is what we need in this country,” Mrs GE, a Lagosian told Good Health. I think someone should import it and get NAFDAC’s approval immediately. That young girl who was killed recently by robbers who tried to rape her in the presence of her parents would probably have been alive if she had such a device. Yes you may not know that the robbers would visit you but we’ve had of situations where they go from flat to flat maiming and raping innocent women. You simply wear your condom if you are aware they have visited your home. You don’t need to protest when they try to force you. Your condom will fight for you. How sweet!”

Some women did not however share the excitement.

“How will you know a rapist is around the corner?” Another respondent who pleaded anonymity asked. “Then there’s this problem of the rapists being more than one. Won’t his gang members harm the victim if they see that the condom has hooked their friend? Will the attacker himself not get more violent when he realizes that he can’t remove it without ripping the skin off his penis?”

Ehlers however says the condom will be most useful for women who live, work, or regularly pass through places or spots where they can be attacked.

“The ideal situation would be for a woman to wear this when she’s going out on some kind of blind date ... or to an area she’s not comfortable with,” she says.

In spite of the fears, some women in Nigeria believe that Rape-aXe is worth trying.

Politics / 20 Reasons Why Boko Haram Crisis May Not End. by dtemidare: 7:57pm On Sep 16, 2012
By Theophilus Abbah

Boko Haram crisis started like any other protest, but it seems to have come to stay. Why is it difficult for security agencies to crush the sect in few well-coordinated operations? It is not clear, but below are some of the reasons.

1. Extrajudicial killings: This is the primary source of the violence. At least, that is what the sect has continued to harp upon. Its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was killed while in police custody, and many members of the group have been killed by security personnel in a manner that has kept human rights organisations raising alarm.

2. Access to lethal weapons: The sect seems to have unfettered access to deadly weapons, including bomb-making materials in spite of the closure of Nigeria’s borders and the alertness of security forces.

3. Detention of suspects without trial: This is another argument by Boko Haram. They claim hundreds of their members are detained in various police cells and prisons without trial. There was a speculation that government may have built a special detention camp for arrested members of the sect. Boko Haram has asked for detained members to be set free by government.

4. Poor understanding of the sect by government: Close to three years after it went violent, there is no evidence that security operatives clearly understand the philosophy, the leadership structure and operational schemes of the sect. This is in spite of the fact that many supposedly leaders of the group are in the custody of security agencies.

5. Unguarded utterances by government agents: Top security chiefs in the country have made utterances that experts in the intelligence community have tagged as unguarded. Statements like ‘Boko Haram’s days are numbered’ have angered the group and, in response, Boko Haram has attacked sensitive locations across the country.

6. Lack of commitment to dialogue: Many elements have called for dialogue between government aznd the sect, but there seems to be no commitment on the part of government and the sect to discuss. For one, the group remains faceless and has continued to make impossible demands, like asking for the North to be ruled by Shariah.

7. Suspected complicity of security agencies: Though this has not been proved, there is the suspicion that some security agents may be associated with the group. President Jonathan once mentioned that Boko Haram had infiltrated his government.

8. Lack of trust for JTF: The group has thrived, mainly because the communities where it operates don’t trust the Joint Task Force enough to give it intelligence information. There are reports that some who gave security agencies information were killed, hence residents are afraid, not only of Boko Haram, but also of giving information to security agents.

9. Poor intelligence: This is associated with No.8. Security agencies don’t seem to have the kind of intelligence needed to tackle the sect, hence it is perceived that Boko Haram is always five steps ahead of security operatives.

10. Rivalry among security agencies: In spite of the concerns raised about this, there is still evidence that security agencies are not coordinated. The SSS, police, NIA, Immigration, may not be collaborating properly. The fact that government disputed a warning by the American intelligence that there was an imminent bomb attack on Abuja showed that the agencies were not working in tandem with the world intelligence community.

11. Support of foreign fundamentalist groups: There is the suspicion that Boko Haram gets support from other groups like the Al-Qaeda. Though this has not been confirmed, it is a strong hypothesis in the security circle.

12. Political suspicion: Government suspects that Boko Haram is backed by powerful politicians from the North. That has not been proved, but as National Security Adviser Azazi made an allusion to it in Port Harcourt at the weekend, this aspect seems to be foremost on the minds of those in government.

13. Greed: Unfortunately, Boko Haram crisis has become an avenue for few Nigerians to access government money. Both federal and state governments are spending a lot of money on the purchase of security gadgets and maintaining security forces. Those who benefit from these may not want the crisis to end quickly.

14. Different ‘kinds’ of Boko Haram: There seems to be political, criminal and real Boko Haram sects at the moment. This means anyone can claim to be Boko Haram, hence it’s possible for government to be dealing with the wrong group in the search for a solution to the crisis.

15. Porous borders: Nigeria’s borders have remained porous, in spite of emergency rule in over a dozen local governments areas and the closure of borders. This is evident in the suspicion that foreign mercenaries and weapons that aid violent attacks are coming in and going out of the country without let or hindrance.

16. Distrust for the elite in the North: Unfortunately, the sect does not seem to have respect for the northern elite, making it difficult to actually call Boko Haram to order. Traditional rulers, government officials and elder statesmen may have found it difficult to approach them because Boko Haram does not trust them.

17. Religious suspicion in Nigeria: Until recently, there has been religious suspicion in the country. Some Christians thought Boko Haram was an attempt to Islamise the country, while some Muslims feel marginalised. However, recently, there seems to be a resolve that the crisis is not primarily religious.

18. Disunity in the country: Unfortunately, many Nigerians do not see the Boko Haram crisis as a national problem. Many see it as a problem of the ‘Muslim North’. The way government attempts to solve it is perceived to be half-hearted. If government dialogued with Niger Delta militants and granted them amnesty, why wouldn’t government dialogue with Boko Haram?

19. Poverty: The poverty level in the North is high. It has led to massive unemployment and apparently, provided a huge number of youths who, when indoctrinated, become potential members of Boko Haram.

20. Strong conviction: Surprisingly, many youths who are members of the sect have a strong conviction that they are doing a noble job. It may take a lot of efforts to re-educate them to enable them understand the damage the group has done to the Nigerian state.

Travel / Airline Asks Passengers To Pay For Gas After Credit Card Is Declined by dtemidare: 11:48am On Sep 11, 2012
Airlines have made it a practice to charge for things like baggage, meals and pillows, but passengers aboard an Air France flight that had to land in the Syrian capital of Damascus were asked if they could chip in a little cash for fuel. The plane was originally bound for Lebanon, but violence near the airport there made it necessary for the plane to divert to Syria. At first, the crew tried to pay for gas with a corporate credit card, but it was rejected due to financial sanctions against Syria. The crew then asked the passengers for a little help. Fortunately, an agreement was reached before customers had to break out their wallets and the flight was able to continue on its way.

Health / Ailing First Lady Recovers From Surgery by dtemidare: 9:40am On Sep 11, 2012
THE health status of First Lady Patience Jonathan is now stable. Her ailment, appendicitis or inflammation of the appendix, sources revealed was not accurately diagnosed by doctors who first examined and treated her before she was flown to the German hospital where she is now recuperating after surgery.

The steady deterioration of her health even after being attended to by Aso Villa physicians when she returned from Dubai where she was said to have been treated for “food poisoning” was as a result of wrong diagnosis.

Sources in the German hospital revealed that the first lady had undergone surgery to remove poison from her intestine after her appendix ruptured.

Medical sources attributed a ruptured appendix to delayed or incorrect diagnosis of appendicitis which manifests in steady worsening of the patient's condition and eventually peritonitis when the appendix ruptures and its contents spill into the intestines and the stomach.

This situation tallies with the health condition of the first lady before she was evacuated to the German hospital.

The country was thrown into much apprehension on learning that the 55-year-old Mrs. Jonathan was in a bad state of health when she arrived a couple of weeks back at the Horst Schmidt Klinik in Wiesbaden, Germany.

A Presidency source stated that after efforts to stabilise her worsening health condition proved abortive by the Presidency's health team, the office of the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, was contacted on Friday, August 24 to arrange for a flight to Italy where she was expected to be treated at a specialist hospital.

Mrs. Jonathan would have been flown earlier, but getting a permit to fly European skies was said to have frustrated the move, until about midnight when a positive response was obtained from the German authorities.

Following the approval, a presidential jet later left Abuja that fateful Saturday for Frankfurt, carrying the First Lady and a few trusted aides.

The source said: “I am aware that she contacted food poisoning in Dubai. We really can't say exactly what she ate in Dubai, which resulted in the ailment. But as soon as it was becoming difficult to get her stabilised here, we were advised to fly her to Bologna, Italy where a particular hospital is said to be good in handling such matters.

“Because it was an emergency case and there was no assurance that a permit would be granted for the team to fly European skies that night, we were still thinking of an alternative until word came in from the German authorities that we could fly in the next day. Calls were made to those asked to be on the alert for a journey to Italy as they would now be flying to Germany. The team left for Frankfurt the next day, Saturday, August 25 and Madam was then taken to Wisbaden where she is currently undergoing treatment.”

The hospital's official, who confirmed that initial records showed that Mrs. Patience Jonathan had earlier been treated for food poisoning in Nigeria before being brought to the Horst Schmidt Klinik, however, said she was responding to treatment after she had undergone a major surgery for a ruptured appendix to remove the poisons in her intestine.

Politics / PTDF Okays N33.945bn For Oil And Gas Museum In Oloibir by dtemidare: 10:49am On Sep 10, 2012
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has approved the proposal made by former President Shehu Shagari for the construction and building of Oil and Gas Museum in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State.

Based on this, Federal Executive Council (FEC) is expected to give final approval for the release of funds for the take off of the project.

In a letter by the Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Mr. Emeka Eze, dated July 17, 2012 to the Director General of the PTDF, the Due Process office reduced the price quotations for the construction of the Oil and Gas Museum from N36,315 billion to N33,949 billion. It also approved the award of the contract to seven contracting firms.

The cost estimates is to cover the following areas for the Oil and Gas Museum; Research Centre, International Conference Centre, Sand Filling and Civil Works, External Maintenance, External Electrical Works, Site Clearance, Geotechnical Survey and Fencing. Seven oil and gas companies bided and won the contract for the constructing and building of the Oloibiri Oil and Gas Museum.

In the letter to the PTDF, the Director General of BPP directed that efforts be hastened towards the construction of the Oil and Gas Museum by ensuring that the contractors that passed the bidding processes submit valid Performance Bonds issued from reputable banks as a pre-condition for the final award of the contracts in order to ensure successful completion of the museum on time.

The Oil and Gas Museum is aimed at generating revenue by ensuring that the funds earmarked for overseas training for oil and other allied workers and other necessary conferences take place in Nigeria, while at the same time ensure the sustainable development of the eco-system of Oloibiri, where oil was first struck in 1956 by the Dutch Oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company.

Ijaw elders and youth leaders have been commending the Federal Government for fast-tracking the construction of the Oil and Gas Museum as one of the best ways of developing and sustaining the Oloibiri Oil Wells that have dried up.

Politics / Jonathan: I’ll Pay Any Price To Make Nigeria Work by dtemidare: 10:29am On Sep 10, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan Sunday said he was prepared “to pay any price” to ensure that things work well in the country.

He also said would do everything possible to implement all his ongoing reforms in the critical sectors of the country.

The presidential assurance was contained in the goodwill message he sent to the opening ceremony of their second plenary session of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia.

Presidential Jonathan’s message, which was delivered by the minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, was full of assurances that everything was on course to pull the nation out of the present malaise.

It was also a vague warning to anti-reform elements as the President insisted that there was no going back on the privatisation of the power sector, adding that “the transformation agenda has reached the point where everybody would be proud that reform has taken place.”

Jonathan, who said he was delighted to have been invited by CBCN to come and “share with them thoughts and vision that guide our nation in the search for development,” said his administration was putting in place superstructures upon which Nigeria would attain greater heights.

He said he was not unmindful of the enormous problems facing the nation, noting that he has been confronting the challenges headlong, citing the youth employment programmes to keep the youths out of crime, the ongoing power sector reforms as well as efforts to tackle the infrastructure deficit across the nation.

Recalling the security challenges facing Nigeria and the rest of world today, Mr. President concluded that “human society today is far from attaining the City of God status as propounded by St Augustine of Hippo.

But he called on the Catholic Bishops to continue in their prayers so that the nation can overcome the critical challenges threatening the peaceful co-existence of citizens, adding that his administration was on its own committed to the building of an egalitarian society.

“This administration will always stand for the truth, peace and justice,” the President said. He quoted some passages from the Holy Bible as he urged Nigerians to learn to love one another and live in harmony in the pluralistic society.

Earlier in his address, the president of CBCN and Catholic
Bishop of Jos Diocese, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, called for a lasting solution to the senseless killings of Christians and other innocent citizens in the northern parts of the country, saying that patience was being overstretched.

“The patience of Christians, especially in the North has been tried and tested for too long now. We ask that the reckless attacks on them and other innocent Nigerians be brought to a halt, through the proper use of security intelligence/expertise available to government and security agencies both within and beyond Nigeria,” he said.

He lamented the ease with which people acquire dangerous weapons due largely to the country’s porous borders hence the bomb explosions and gun attacks that have remained unabated.

“The explosive devices have become like toys used at will and local and sophisticated arms escape our sea ports, land borders and find their way into the hands of criminals and hoodlums; it is a cause of very great concern,” the CBCN President said.
According to him, the apparently unchecked flow of arms and ammunition and the attendant killings have made “most Nigerians wonder whether we are on top of the situation as usually claimed” by government and security agencies.

However, Bishop Kaigama assured that the Catholic Bishops and the faithful were committed to a united and peaceful Nigeria despite the blood lettings of Christians and would continue to pray for the men of violence to change their ways and learn to love.

Religion / Hallelujah Cossy Orjiakor Turns Born Again!!!! by dtemidare: 4:32pm On Sep 08, 2012
Many people who have misconception about this controversial actress will not believe that she is a good Christian.

Though, some wonder how she attends church services without creating commotion with her mammals gland. Anyway, the tinny voice actress has disclosed that she prays to God as a christian and she attends church like a normal human being.

"Prayer is a personal thing with God. I tell God what is on my mind. All have sinned and have come short of the glory of God. I go to church you know; I am a born again Anglican." She said.

But as controversial as she is, she has suffered a lot of misconceptions from people mostly her colleagues, most of these are what she is aware of.

Her comment about that is simply that, "I have bad press publicity about the kind of clothes I wear and all that. There was a time I attended this old school party and I dressed the old school way. The press then wrote that this is how Cossy Orjiakor is, she is looking ugly, and maybe she was on cocaine and all that. How could I go to an old school party looking new school? That day, I even had nice Brazillian weave-on on and I had to weave it any how so that I will look old school. I think they just like talking about me." She told us.

Romance / I Caught My Uncle's Wife Cheating On Him With The Gate Man. Wat Do I Do? by dtemidare: 2:36pm On Sep 07, 2012
I am afraid for my safety as I send this information to you. Please leave my e-mail address and name out of this. My purpose of writing is to get people's opinion on what to do.

"I came to Lagos about three months ago to stay with my uncle and his wife, who's an Ibo woman. By the way my uncle is from Edo State and their marriage is about four years without kids. In the last week of August my bros travelled to the North on official business and something happened in his bedroom.

"I came back that day because I could not meet up a job appointment in Igando area due to heavy traffic. I was reluctant to return home since I had just left but I couldn't think of a better place to go so I headed home. On getting to our compound, I didn't find the gate man at his post and I was even angry because of the security risk of him leaving the gate open like that.

"But something got me worried when I saw the gate man's sandals right inside our sitting room. I just told myself that something is going on between my uncle's wife and this dirty boy. I was right, when I moved close to the window of my uncle's bedroom I started hearing screams of sexual pleasure from his wife. I tried to peep into the room but it was difficult because of the protector.

"So, I summoned courage and walk to the door as if I wanted to tell my uncle's wife that I was back. I opened the door and caught the adulterous woman red-handed under the dirty gate man (boy). Sadly, the gate man was already ejaculating so he couldn't get up immediately, it took him few seconds to jump off and grab his clothes.

"I simply walked away and returned to the sitting room, pretending to be watching a programme on the TV. Few minutes later my uncle's wife joined me and started begging that it would not happen again. I didn't say a word but when she kept pressing I said ok I've heard. Later she brought food for me but I refused it and since then she has been putting pressure on me.

"The unfortunate thing is now she even wants me to sleep with her as an assurance that I wont tell my uncle, always coming to my room half naked. Because of this I've not eating in the house in the last one week, I'm almost going broke already.

"My uncle may be back next week. I will like people with more experience to tell me what to do when he comes back. Should I tell my uncle the kind of wife he married or quietly move out?"

Politics / VIDEO-I Would Print N10, 000 Notes If I Was In Charge – Peterside Atedo by dtemidare: 9:44am On Sep 06, 2012
The Chairman of Stanbic IBTC Bank and a member of the Economic Management Team, Peterside Atedo on Tuesday said that he supports the move by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to introduce the N5000 note in the country.

Speaking to journalists after this week’s Economic Management Team’s meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, Mr Peterside said “Last year Nigeria spend N47 billion printing these small notes.”

The renowned banker said if the country was printing bigger notes “you will print a fewer number of the notes and you will make a phenomenal saving.

“If I was the one in charge, I will print N10, 000 notes,” he declared.

Reacting to questions on the relationship between inflation and printing of higher denominations, Mr Peterside said printing higher currency does not result in inflation.

“There is no inflationary impact,”” he said. He describes as “Voodoo economics” the argument by some critics that the introduction of the proposed N5000 note will result in inflation in the Nigerian economy.

Meanwhile, Business mogul and another member of the Economic Management Team, Aliko Dangote said “the introduction of the N5000 really has nothing to do with inflation as people have been saying.”

He said the CBN has explained and convinced the Federal government on the need to print the N5000 notes.

“Actually it is just to protect the currency. It is not going to cause any inflation. The cost of printing the N5000 is not different from that of printing the other currency
