DSS invasion of my house unlawful – Ex-Sultan
JULY 21, 2015 : JOHN ALECHENU AND FIDELIS SORIWEI
55 Comments
Former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki
The
father of
the
embattled
former
National
Security
Adviser,
former
Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki, has expressed shock at the invasion of his
Sokoto home by operatives of the Department of State Services, saying
the invasion was unlawful.
The senior Dasuki, who was the 18th Sultan of Sokoto until he was
deposed by the military regime of the late General Sani Abacha, said
this in an interview he granted the Hausa Service of the British
Broadcasting Corporation , on Monday.
The ex-monarch said that at 94 years of age, he was surprised that his
residence could be invaded by security officials without being given the
courtesy of being informed.
He explained that he had never been found wanting in all the places he
had worked throughout his days as a youth.
Dasuki said, “I don’t know what they were looking for in my house.
Even, I have not spoken with a member of my staff who they opened
the house with. They entered into the ceiling of rooms belonging to
women and no one said they found anything.
“They entered my portion of the house, there were two safes, they said
they found an old Certificate of Occupancy of a house and that in one
(of the safes), they found an empty envelop, that is what they said.”
Responding to a question over a container found within the compound,
Dasuki said, “The container is on one side in the compound. Aliyu
Dasuki (deceased) is my son, I am a younger brother to his father, and
his wife is my daughter. When he died, his wife’s belongings mainly old
furniture and mattresses are the things inside the container.
“They opened it. Like I told you before, even the member of my staff
who was there, I have not been able to speak with him to know what
exactly happened.
“All I have heard is hearsay and if he told me what happened, in the
end, like I did before, I will leave everything to Allah.”
He also wondered why the security officials chose to invade his home
in Sokoto when his son’s house is in Abuja.
“They did not go to Sambo Dasuki’s house, they went to my house. All
my children have a right to my house. Sambo Dasuki is almost 60 years
old, he is a man of his own. Can you hold a father responsible for the
actions of his son?” he queried.
The senior Dasuki also explained that he was not averse to authorities
questioning his son for his actions or inactions while in office.
He said, “He (Sambo) worked; they should ask him.”
The former sultan argued that even the constitution and the nation’s
relevant laws stipulate that he should be informed before security
officials entered his house.
It will be recalled that the DSS had in a statement on Sunday, explained
that it carried out the search on the homes of the Dasukis following
credible intelligence report that the former NSA was plotting to commit
treasonable felony against the Nigerian state.
Spokesman for the security agency, Mr. Tony Opuiyo said the DSS had
planned simultaneous searches on its two targets, but that the former
NSA denied its officers entry into his main residence despite being
presented with a genuine and duly signed search warrant.
The former NSA, he said, used the military guards at his home to
prevent the DSS operatives from performing their legitimate duty,
creating a potentially dangerous situation.
Meanwhile, some northern traditional and retired generals have
intervened in the case involving the DSS and the former NSA.
Investigations on Monday showed that some traditional rulers from the
North-West had prevailed on the former NSA not to drag the Federal
Government to court over the invasion of his house in Abuja.
There were reports on Saturday that Dasuki would file a suit against the
DSS on Tuesday (today) because of the invasion of his house.
The DSS had on Friday surrounded the ex-NSA’s house in Abuja and
that of his father in Sokoto.
Dasuki was forced to stay indoors for about 24 hours and the DSS
operatives were said to have seized his international passport.
The security agency had in a statement on Saturday night accused
Dasuki of felony, misuse of power and being in possession of
destructive weapons.

[PHOTOS] Osun residents storm Winners Chapel for food aid
JULY 19, 2015 : OLUFEMI MAKINDE
24 Comments
Hundreds of public servants, retirees and other categories of residents
of Osun State trooped to the Winners Chapel, Osogbo, on Sunday to
partake of the food aid sent to the state by the Presiding Bishop of the
church, Bishop David Oyedepo.
The State Pastor of the church, Pastor Olumuyiwa Emmanuel, had on
Wednesday announced, during the mid week service, that the truck
loads of the food donation had arrived for distribution. He directed them
to invite their friends and neighbours, irrespective of their religious
affiliations.
He said the food stuffs were sent to assist workers and others cope
with the hardship caused by non-payment of salaries.
The pastor said, “The church has been blessed to be a blessing to
others. Irrespective of their religious affiliations, we are blessed to
affect the lives of others positively.
“That is the reason why the church has been giving to the less
privileged ones. We have been distributing food items to members and
non members. The church also distributed food stuffs last month.
“God does not bless people so that they can be a container, he blesses
people so that they can bless others and all of us must be doing that.
“Rather than acquisition of wealth, we should cultivate the habit of
giving to those around us, and in return we would receive more
blessings from God.”
Emmanuel announced after the second service that anyone interested in
being a partaker of the largesse should wait.
The pastor also announced that there would be free medical treatment
for all manner of ailments and diseases next Sunday, while urging
church members to invite anyone they knew that needed medical
attention to come and benefit from the free services.
Few minutes after that announcement, there was a long queue of
intending beneficiaries waiting patiently for the distribution of the food.
Those on the queues were given rice, packets of tomato paste and
vegetable oil and some parents and their children queued separately in
order to increase their rations.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the church for the
largesse, saying the nation would be a better place if religious
organisations, corporate organisations and individuals started
considering the less privileged ones.
The church had on June 14 doled out food and financial aid to workers
and others who needed their largesse.
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the state, Rev.
Elisha Ogundiya, after this, also advised churches in the state to begin
to donate food stuffs to workers to assist them cope with the hardship
caused by the nonpayment of their salaries for months.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State, Mr. Jacob
Adekomi, also said in June that labour unions in the state would soon
approach wealthy Nigerians to ask them to donate food to their
members. |
IYC faults Obasanjo over comment on Jonathan
JULY 19, 2015 : SIMON UTEBOR, YENAGOA
20 Comments
The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, has
berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over alleged
uncomplimentary comment on the immediate past President, Dr.
Goodluck Jonathan.
Obasanjo had allegedly said while delivering a convocation lecture at
Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State, that the perceived failure
of Jonathan in office would haunt the people of South-South zone for a
long time.
The IYC took exception to the comment, saying that the statement was
reckless, baseless and a deliberate effort by Obasanjo to dent former
President Jonathan’s towering image in the international community.
The group in a statement on Sunday by its spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare,
said Obasanjo’s comment was uncharitable and a calculated attempt to
tarnish the reputation of one of their referred illustrious sons, whose
records of performance were unparalleled in Nigeria’s political history.
The group said, “The IYC considers the statement as reckless, baseless
and a deliberate effort by Obasanjo to dent former President Jonathan’s
towering image in the international community.
“As usual, Obasanjo does not want anybody in Nigeria to be greater
than he.
” The IYC makes bold to state that former President Jonathan’s five
years in office were far better than Obasanjo’s eight years in office. If
Obasanjo has forgotten, we wish to remind him that because of his
reckless impunity in rigging elections, late President Umaru Yar’Adua on
assumption of office had zero regard in the international community.
“However, President Jonathan has redeemed this badly battered image
by reforming the electoral system as elections in Nigeria today are
substantially free, fair and credible with the consequent goodwill it has
generated for Nigeria in the international community.
“President Muhammadu Buhari would not have been receiving the
highest respect before President Barrack Obama in the United States
now if not for former President Jonathan’s efforts in reforming the
electoral system in Nigeria.”
The IYC stated that if there was any region that ought to be haunted by
the performance of ex-Nigerian President, it is the South West region as
former President Obasanjo’s performance in office was abysmal.
However, it said the South-West was completely exonerated from any
blame as they totally rejected Obasanjo in 1999 because they knew very
well that nothing good could come out of Obasanjo. |

The Acing Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, has said
the troops of the Nigerian Army have detonated land mines planted by
the insurgents along the Maiduguri – Biu Road.
Usman said the road was now safe for usage as adequate security had
been provide to ensure safety of commuters.
Usman whose comments were contained in an electronic mail on
Sunday said the land mines were removed by the Special Forces
Explosive Ordinance Devices unit in collaboration with the police and
the vigilance groups.
He said that the team of security operatives successfully detonated four
Improvised Explosive Devices planted by the insurgents during the
operation.
The Acting Army Spokesman also advised the members of the public to
be vigilant and security conscious and report suspicious movements to
security operatives.
The insurgents had reportedly taken over a portion of the Maiduguri-Biu
Road on Monday.
He said, “Please be informed that Damaturu-Biu Road had been cleared
of land mines by a team of Nigerian Army Special Forces, Explosives
Ordinance Devices with support from Nigeria Police and local vigilante.
“During the painstaking and thorough operation, four Improvised
Explosive Devices planted by the suspected Boko Haram terrorists were
discovered and successfully detonated.
“Commuters are encouraged to use the road as adequate security has
been provided.

security conscious and report any suspicious persons and movement to
the security agents.”

Buhari Stopped Insurgents
From Taking More Territories
– Oyegun
By Chibuzo Ukaibe
— Jul 19, 2015 5:19 am | 4 Comments
The national chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) Chief
John Odigie-Oyegun, in apparent
defence of President Muhammadu
Buhari over claims in certain quarters
that under his watch, insurgency has
escalated, said rather, the insurgents
have been prevented from taking
territories unlike what they did under the
last administration.
Chief Oyegun, who was a guest on
‘Osasu Show’, a private television
programme in Abuja said it was
unfortunate that the level of bombings
in recent times have escalated but
maintained that it was one of the
desperate moves by the insurgents to
create panic since they could no longer
be confined to holding a part of the
country to ransom as was the case
when they were in control of several
local governments under the erstwhile
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“It is the most difficult thing to contain
in the immediate term but the
government is working very intensively
to match this change of tactics by Boko
Haram. Don’t forget they started by
bombings, then when they saw that they
could hold territories, they shifted to
wanting to create their own country
within a county. That has been the
movement. But now that they have been
contained and driven out of holding
territories, they have now gone back to
the original tactics that they started
with; that is where the new
confrontations is. We are relying
intensively on intelligence and trying to
debrief minds.” He said it is an
amazement that young people would
agree to blow up themselves in bombs.
On the delay in the appointment of
ministers, he said it was better to delay
and be tagged, ‘Mr Go Slow’ than to
progress in errors as was the case in
the past. According to him, President
Buhari has a reputation which he would
not want to tarnished by anything, the
reason for which he is taking his time
to ensure that he picks the best hands
available. He said Nigerians should
watch out for changes three months
after the composition of the cabinet. He
said even though people expect much, it
requires gradual planning of which the
president has started judging from the
international rating Nigeria has enjoyed
since Buhari became president.
He said those members of his party who
fragrantly violated the party’s principle
should expect what he called ‘political
spanking’ because every political party
has a set of rules that all members who
used its platform to aspire into any
position must subscribe to.
“Political spanking, yes, there will be.
Nothing is ruled out at the end of the
day. Persons that were promoted, so to
speak, by the party and turned against
the party, if they persist something, of
course, has to be done. There must be
consequences otherwise no organisation
can survive if everybody can do
precisely what they like, there must be
consequences,” he said. |
Dr Junaid Mohammed, a second republic lawmaker of the Coalition of
Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, has
said some things about President Buhari that might interest you.
Dr. Junaid Mohammed
Mohammed, in a new interview with Punch talks about the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC), President Buhari, his administration and
some other crucial national issues. He also talked about the
president’s appointment so far and many more.
Read excerpts from the engaging interview below:
Do you see another crisis in APC over appointments into President
Buhari’s cabinet, apart from the current one on National Assembly
leadership?
Incidentally, many of them do not know the implication of making
Buhari the President. If you want to make somebody a president, you
must know his character and you must also accept that he is not
going to change at 73 years. People don’t change their character at
such an age. If you want a president who will win an election, after
which you will go ahead to nominate people for appointments as
ministers and those that would hold key positions for him, then, you
should not have looked for Buhari.
You should have gone to look for some lousy crooks that can do that
for you. I want to assure you; as long as Buhari is the President, there
is no way you can change him. And you cannot stampede him
because the man is transparent. He is not rich but he always takes
the interest of the country to heart. And anybody who thinks that at
this age, Buhari who ‘suffered’ from 1985 to 2015, will now bend his
principles simply because he wants to satisfy some people within or
outside APC is making a mistake. I know him. I know Buhari well
enough that he will rather leave the presidency than to compromise
his principle and integrity. If he had wanted to compromise his
integrity, he should have remained in power since 1985. Now, the
country had to go and beg him to come back and he stood to win the
(presidential) election after four attempts. As far as I am concerned,
we all have to be very realistic.
READ ALSO: Powerful Nigerians Don’t Want Chibok Girls Rescued –
Negotiator
This is the man we elected and nobody has come to say he won the
election because he had the money. If you must win an election like
that, you need to have people, you need to have the money, and you
need to have the organisation. I don’t believe Buhari has any of these.
He won the election fair and square. Now asking him to change at 73
is asking for the impossible. Let those who brought him; let those who
campaigned for him; let those who financed part of his campaign
accept the reality that this man, barring anything unforeseen, will be
the President of Nigeria for the next four years. So, we have to learn
to adapt to his style of management and governance. That is the only
realistic thing. Anything beyond this will only lead to frustration all
round.
There is the perception that Buhari’s appointments so far have been
favourable to northerners. Can you also see any lopsidedness in his
choice of appointees?
Can anyone confirm to me in all the appointments made – they are
very few– how many of them (appointees) are not Nigerians? Do we
have anyone who is not a Nigerian? Is there any law or any section of
the constitution which stipulates that a certain proportion of
appointments must come from the North or from the South? Can
anyone also tell me that these appointments made were not on merit?
Were these persons just appointed because they are northerners? If
there is any breach of any law in the constitution about some of these
appointments, I will be glad to know. I will lead the charge against the
appointments; that they were not made on merit. Unless we clear this
nonsense about nepotism, about where somebody comes from, we are
not going to make headway in Nigeria. That is why Nigerian Army fails
to control Boko Haram.
In appointing the service chiefs, we are more concerned about where
they come from and not their ability to command. We had a disaster
then they brought the late Gen. Owoye Azazi; it was another disaster
when brought Gen. Kenneth Minimah. Everybody knew these were not
the kind of people to be service chiefs. Then, we also had someone
from the North, who was made the National Security Adviser and
became the de facto, ‘super super’ chief of the Armed Forces. He had
more power than the Commander-in-Chief, more than the Chief of
Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff; and he was a bloody
mediocre. Before people start making any comments, let them wait
and see the total number of people who have been appointed. If not,
we are going to stampede the President into making monumental
disasters he will regret and all of us will regret.
Let us learn for a moment to be Nigerians. Look at ability; look for
the people who can do the job; that is the only way Nigeria can make
progress. I am not saying all these people (appointed so far) are the
best, because I don’t know most of them. There was a time when two
brothers from the same town and house in Zaria; one was appointed
the Minister of Transport, the other was appointed Presidential Adviser
on Petroleum, given by gazette under the administration of Shagari.
Imagine if Buhari were to give two brothers such appointments now;
there will be an outcry.
The anti-graft agencies seem to have suddenly become aggressive in the
prosecution of corruption cases under the new administration. Do you
think it has anything to do with the new President?
Let me be honest with you, there is a Buhari factor. And this is an
important area in which I want Nigerians to wake up. There is nothing
like an independent Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions or
an independent Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related
Offences Commission. The performance of these agencies and similar
agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Security, is
entirely dependent on the integrity, sincerity and honesty of the head
of government – the President. If the President is determined that
these agencies are important and must do their job and do it well,
they will. If the president is a liar and a crook, just as the people
surrounding him, even if you have angels from heaven to man these
organisations, nothing will happen.
I know for a fact that all the governors who have been detained; their
investigations were commenced and completed years ago. Nothing
happened to them because the President did not want anything to
happen. I want to assure you also that you will see the Nigerian
judiciary doing its job now. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, like the
woman before him, is a judge who is incorruptible. But more
importantly, the investigative agencies, which will carry out the
investigations and submit the files to the judges, are doing their job
now for the first time. Former President (Olusegun) Obasanjo was
selective but now we are seeing that even persons who are very close
to Buhari, like Murtala Nyako, are facing the law now. All the
investigations are there. If we are serious, we will do it; if we are not
serious, nothing happens. The fact is that they now know that both the
criminals and those who are investigating the criminals – Police,
EFCC, ICPC – if they renege, Buhari will simply walk over them and
that will be the end of the story.
What is your take on PDP’s advice that Buhari should launch its anti-
corruption campaign from within the APC fold?
Which people? Can they mention the names? In the common law
system, the English system we inherited, a suspect is innocent until
proven guilty. To prove somebody guilty in a criminal case, which can
earn him a jail term, you have to prove the case beyond reasonable
doubt. Can they point out the guilty persons in APC that they want
prosecuted? They should tell us who are the guilty ones and what
evidence they have against those to be prosecuted.
Does it mean that there is no corrupt person close to Buhari that he can
use as a scape goat?
That is again a double standard. If you look at those close to Buhari
and start to prosecute them, then, you have applied double standard.
Why should you punish a man only because he is close to Buhari?
When somebody commits a crime, we have the prosecuting agencies.
But to prosecute the person, they have to apply the statutes of the
law. I do not believe that people who are close to Buhari, just for the
sake of being close to Buhari for over a decade, should now be
prosecuted just to demonstrate that Buhari is a no-nonsense person;
that is not true. But if they have any evidence against anybody,
whether in APC or PDP, let them bring the evidence. They were in
government for 16 years, how many people did they prosecute? How
many people did the PDP prosecute when they were in power? I want
to know.
Some economists have advised the President to work more on blocking
the leakages in the economy than pursuing looters and their loots…
How do you build a system when the economy itself is in danger?
When Buhari came, there was no money. Most of the states cannot
even pay salaries of workers, including APC states. If there is no
money to pay people, what leakages are you planning to block? Tax-
paying workers should earn their salaries as at when due. It is after
that you can start talking about what actually happened. How come
states cannot pay salaries for several months? Is the revenue
allocation formula wrong? I think it is a bad revenue allocation
formula. I have looked at it since 2000 and I will tell anybody who
wants to listen that we cannot build the nation with the current
revenue allocation formula. This is the situation: Akwa Ibom, Rivers,
Delta, Bayelsa and other states with oil are loaded with money. And
the monies are being stolen, laundered and taken to outside banks.
They do not even invest the monies here; they take them outside the
country, while the remaining states in the country cannot afford to pay
their salaries.
I know they are (also) corrupt but that does not mean that because
there is corruption, the poor states have the right to be corrupt too.
That is not making a rational judgment. Change the revenue allocation
formula. Make sure that every Nigerian has a feeling of being a
citizen and set the minimum of what every Nigerian is entitled to—
free education, free health care services and security. Use a
benchmark to determine what every state in Nigeria is entitled to,
instead of giving extra monies to states like Delta, Akwa Ibom,
Bayelsa and others. These people have received these monies and
they have not added value to Nigeria’s governance or to the security
of the country.
It leads to instability. I do not believe that Aregbesola is the worst
governor in Nigeria. But look at the stabs he is taking because he
cannot pay salaries. Has anybody asked whether the amount of money
Aregbesola gets in terms of internally generated revenue and from the
federation account is enough to maintain the staff population in Osun
State?
But some of the governors are said to be wasteful with their huge cabinets
and huge salaries and allowances regularly paid, while the civil servants
are owed salaries?
I agree but the government should issue a guideline; no state should
have more than six to eight commissioners; no governor should have
more than four advisers. Scrap all these because they add no value to
the governor. I agree with you entirely. There is no justification for
bogus staff strength when they cannot pay basic salaries.
Now, we are in a very difficult situation and I am glad that in Kano –
my state – the governor, who was my classmate, has slashed his
salary, that of his deputy and every other appointee by 50 per cent.
Governors must pay salaries. They must also slash the number of
political appointees. They should not blame Buhari for that. Nigeria is
a federation with three tiers of government. Each has its sources of
revenue. The fact that someone misbehaves does not mean it should
affect the whole country.
Recently, Junaid Mohammed, who was a critic of the President
Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, cautioned the President Buhari
to implement immediate steps to flush out political figures from the
Nigerian Armed Forces in order to form room for democracy to
flourish in Nigeria. |
[UPDATED] 50 killed as B’Haram bombers attack Damaturu prayer ground JULY 17, 2015 : KAYODE IDOWU & FIDELIS SORIWEI 215 Comments The authorities of the Nigerian Army have confirmed that 50 people lost their lives in two bomb explosions that rocked Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, on Friday. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Friday that 43 persons died in the first explosion which occurred at 7.40am and seven others in the second explosion. Several other people were also said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries from the two explosions. It was learnt a teenage girl and an elderly woman carried out the two attacks at the screening area for the Eid prayers in Damaturu. The explosions occurred while the screening of intending worshippers for the early morning prayers was taking place at Layin Geange and ‘Phase 1 ‘ in front of the former Yobe State Secretariat, in Damaturu. Usman said the situation was under control. One of the residents, Musa Yusuf, who also spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, said, “There is apprehension in Damaturu as I am talking to you. We are celebrating Sallah in fear with these explosions this morning. “It is hard to ascertain the number of casualties now but the military and policemen are everywhere keeping watch in the town.” Usman, who urged citizens to be calm and vigilant, said the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Tukur Buratai, and the Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Geidam, sympathised with the families of the victims of the unfortunate incidents. He said, “The situation is under control. Both Yobe State Governor and the Chief of Army Staff sympathise with and urged the people to stay calm and be security conscious. “No amount of terrorist act will deter our resolve to stamp out terrorism and insurgency.” www.punchng.com/news/twin-blasts-rock-damaturu-eid-prayer-ground/ |
