As Nigerians elsewhere celebrate Nigeria’s 55-year independence anniversary, residents of Kirchinga, in Adamawa state, are marking the day in anguish following the attack on the village by Boko Haram terrorists, slitting the throats of five residents of the area in an early morning attack.
The village is the hometown of former acting governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Kirchinga, a village in Madagali Local Government of Adamawa state, which shares border with the dreaded Sambisa forest, was one of the areas once annexed by Boko Haram insurgents last year.
It was however later cleared of terrorists after Boko Haram was routed by Nigerian troops in a counter insurgency operation.
A fleeing resident of the village, Ahmad Musa, in a telephone interview, said the insurgents struck the village at about 12:30am on Thursday and started firing sporadic shots while razing down buildings, making residents to flee into nearby bushes.
The resident said the insurgents slaughtered five trapped people, including three women and two men.
” We are now in deep sorrow,” Mr. Musa lamented.
According to him, the insurgents had a field day for many hours as they operated unchallenged due to complete absence of security personnel in the area.
Another resident of the area, John Apagwu, accused the government of leaving them to their own fate, corroborating Mr. Musa’s account that there was complete absence of security personnel in the area.
“We want the government to deploy more security personnel for us because as Nigerians the government owes us a duty to protect us,” Mr. Apagwu said.
“The fact that our area share borders with Sambisa forest and Cameroon republic should have been enough reason why government must deploy security personnel to protect us. If the government does not take proactive measures to stem the ugly insurrection of insurgents into our domain, they will kill all of us.”
Mr. Apagwu added that already, people were fleeing the area en mass to Madagali for fear of their lives as they anticipated more attacks from the Boko Haram insurgents following the absence of security personnel in the area.
Confirming the incident, the member representing Michika/Madagali Federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Adamu Kamale, blamed the Federal Government for the wanton destruction of lives and properties.
Mr. Kamale accused the government of paying lip service to the security of the people of the area.
He noted that while other parts of Nigeria were in celebration mood over Nigeria’s independence anniversary, his people were mourning the wanton massacre of their loved ones.
“We need more security personnel as our villages share borders with Sambisa forest,” the lawmaker said.
“The federal government has been doing nothing in the past four months to secure our people as security is degenerating by the day. The security personnel are even compounding our predicaments as what they are saying on the pages of newspapers is contrary to was is happening on ground,”

Contrary to the Inspector General of Police’s claim on Thursday that no ransom was paid for the release of Chief Olu Falae, a family source has told Nigerian Times that money was indeed paid to secure his freedom.
Chief Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and one-time Minister of Finance, was abducted from his farm on Monday morning by individuals suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
The politician and former presidential candidate of the Alliance for democracy and All Nigeria Peoples Party was reunited with his family on Thursday, 24 hours after president Muhammadu Buhari ordered the police and other security agencies to do everything possible to secure his release.
Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, who led the elder statesmen to his home, told journalists that his men had rescued Falae and that no ransom was paid to his abductors who had demanded N100 million.
The IGP who described kidnapping as a global phenomenon had said on Thursday:
“We are going to devise strategies to ensure that hoodlums cannot overwhelm a state. It is not possible. We will continue to disgrace them; we will continue to catch them. Right from Monday when he was kidnapped, policemen had been working underground. No ransom was paid. I will let you know if anybody was apprehended later”.
A member of Falae’s family who spoke to Nigerian Times on Friday said Arase statement was misleading as money was paid to release the former SGF.
The family member, who asked that his name not be disclosed as he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the family, said it was not possible today for kidnappers to release their victim without collecting ransom.
“Do you even think it is possible? The IG is not telling Nigerians the truth. Money was paid even though I cannot disclose the exact amount to you, the family source said.
“At any rate, Chief was not exactly loved by his abductors. He had had running battles with the herdsmen. Once, they asked him to fence in his farm, which is more than 30 hectares. I believe they had his abduction planned for sometime and that being the case, how do you expect them to release him without collecting something?”
The source said that contrary to what the Inspector General would have Nigerians believe, the Police did not go into the bush to rescue Falae.
“It is simply not true. Chief’s kidnappers released him after money had been given to him. He had to trek about 30 kilometres before the police eventually found him,” our source said.

I know of a place in the South/south that uses it to cover their private parts. Some women wear it to show that they are powerful because they lace it with charms. I personally don’t believe it is every woman that wears ordinary beads.
However, Pastor Elias Johnson stated that, “The Bible says that anything that will make your brother fall, avoid it. According to him, the Scripture says, ‘Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear, but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious’”. He said another part of the Holy Scripture also says, “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works”. This is to tell you that women, according to the Scripture, are urged to dress decently. To use the rosary in this way, the following things must be observed: The rosary must be grasped within the palms of both hands which are then rubbed together, then the Fatiha is solemnly repeated, after which the user breathes upon the rosary with his breath in order to put the magic-power of the chapter into the beads. Then he seizes a particular bead and counts toward the ‘pointer bead using the words, God, Mohammed, Abu Jahal. When the count terminates with the name of God, it means that his request is favorably received, if it terminates with Abu Jahal it is bad and if with Mohammed the reply is doubtful. But when women wear it on their waist, it is for their personal reason and has nothing to do with Islam. Islam encourages holiness and so, I don’t see any reason why women will use beads to tempt men.”

Our mothers wore waist beads to protect them during menstruation, courtship and childbirth. It is worn below the belly so that it will sit on the hips. You can wear them over your clothes to adorn a long skirt or dress or against your skin while wearing a cropped top or low -rise jeans. The waist beads remind you that the curve of your hips and belly are what make you a woman. Waist beads can be worn all the time, day and night, as long as you have no allergies. Make sure the findings made from base metal or pewter and the stones and gem chips cause no skin reactions.”
In some parts of Africa, beads are anointed with oils and the woman stands over a smoked pot and begins to ‘smoke herself’. Some beads are adorned with bells which is a signal to let the man know that the woman wants to engage in sexual intercourse. Some women wear the beads as a source of birth control, controlling obesity or to heal some diseases.

The military in Burkina Faso has announced the dissolution of the country’s transitional government, a day after presidential guards arrested the interim president and prime minister.
President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Yacouba Zida were detained by soldiers who stormed an afternoon Cabinet meeting, plunging the poor West African country into chaos and uncertainty.
The coup comes days before the country’s first election since last year’s ouster of long-serving ruler, Blaise Compaore.
Mr. Compoare was deposed in a popular uprising in 2014.
The interim leaders were due to hand power to a new government after elections on October 11.
Their arrest on Wednesday triggered fresh street protests outside the presidential palace.
Soldiers responded with gunfire and forced radio and television stations to stop broadcasting.
An unnamed military official said on Thursday that the interim president, Mr. Kafando, had been stripped of his functions and the government dissolved.
“We have put in place a national democracy council tasked with organising democratic and inclusive elections,” said the unidentified official in military uniform, according to Reuters.
Moumina Cheriff Sy, the speaker of the transitional parliament, called the coup “a blow to the republic and its institutions”.
“I call on all patriots to gather to defend the motherland,” he said.
The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed outrage over the coup, calling for the immediate release of the leaders.
In a statement, Mr. Ban’s press office said, “This incident is a flagrant violation of Burkina Faso’s Constitution and Transitional Charter”.
The United States also called for the immediate release of the interim president, prime minister.
“The United States strongly condemns any attempt to seize power through extra-constitutional means or resolve internal political disagreements using force,” State Department spokesperson, John Kirby, said in a statement.

A Senior Magistrate ’s Court in Benin , Edo state Wednesday ordered the remand of Prince Rich Arisco -Osemwingie , in prison custody , for unlawfully coronating himself as His Royal Majesty , Ogiamen of Utantan in Benin nation.
Arisco -Osemwingie , a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) , who was arraigned along with his brother , Patrick Osabuohien , on a six -count charge of felony and misdemeanour before Chief Magistrate M .C . Ojobo , ( Mrs . ) , in Charge No. MOR / 148 c / 2015 .
The accused persons were alleged to have conspired together on the 9 th day of September 2015 at No. 97 Sakponba Road in Benin City to commit the unlawful coronation , an offence punishable under Section 517 of the criminal code , Cap 48 Vol 11 laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 now applicable in Edo State.
According to the charge sheet , the 1 st accused person ( Rich Arisco Osemwengie ) was said to have allowed himself to be installed as a Traditional Ruler , His Royal Majesty , The Ogiamen of Utantan Benin Nation , as well as assumed the Chieftaincy title when he is not a chief , without the approval of the Executive Council of Edo State , an offence punishable under Section 20( 2 ) ( b ) and 26 ( 1 ) ( a) ( 11) of the Traditional Ruler Chiefs Law of Bendel State .
The 2 nd accused person ( Patrick Osabuohien ) and others now at large , were alleged to have carried out the said coronation without the approval of the Executive Council and thereby committed an offence punishable under Sections 20 ( 2) ( a) ( b ) , 26( 2 ) ( a ) and 249 ( d ) of the criminal code.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them .
Citing Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure , as well as Section 36( 5 ) of the Nigeria Constitution where bail was at the discretion of the court , Counsel for the accused , Godwin Oiakhena who led four other lawyers, prayed the court to grant his clients bail , saying that as gentlemen they would not jump bail .
The Prosecution Counsel while objecting the bail application , described the 1 st accused person as a man of considerable means who has the capacity to interfere in the investigation of the trial as others were still at large .
Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice , Henry Idahagbon, who led a retinue of Senior Counsel of the Justice Ministry in prosecution, told the court that the offence was tantamount to a traditional coup de tat capable of causing breach of peace, unrest and civil disorder in the society .
He therefore urged the court to refuse the bail application .
In her ruling , Magistrate Ojobo ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned hearing of case to 29 September 2015.

Popular musician, King Sunny Ade, has approached a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State to award him N3 billion damages in an alleged copyright infringement case against some marketers and record labels.
The seven defendants in the suit, filed in 2007, included musical records and cassettes marketers and a cassette jacket printer in Nigeria.
Sunny Ade instituted the suit against the defendants for alleged copyright infringement on 43 works categorised as singles, extended, series and others.
He is also seeking a court order directing the defendants to deliver to him the master tapes of the said musical works.
He also wants the court to bar the defendants from printing his photographs or his likeness on any musical works.
The defendants in the suit are African Songs Limited, Take Your Choice Records Store Limited, Lati Alagbada Nigeria Limited and Records Manufacturer of Nigeria Limited.
Others are Ibukunolu Printers Nigeria Ltd, Alhaja Awawu Ade Amodu and Sons and M.O. Alagbada Nigeria Company.
In his 41-paragraph statement of claim, the musician claimed to have, in 1970, entered into a five-year agreement with the first defendant to reproduce the said works and sell under its record label.
He, however, claimed that upon the expiration of the agreement period in 1975, the first defendant refused to return to him the master tapes of the songs despite repeated demands from its then Chief Executive Officer, who is now dead, Chief Bolarinwa Abioro.
He claimed that a suit instituted on the subject matter in 1974 was resolved in his favour by Justice L.J. Dosunmu in 1975.
He, however, claimed that in spite of the judgment, the defendants had continued to reproduce and distribute his works without his authorisation, causing him both social and financial losses.
Sunny Ade claimed that his monthly revenue from live shows, which used to be N5 million, had reduced to N500,000.
He also claimed that his monthly income from sales of compact discs and cassettes had reduced from N3.5 million to N150,000.
But the first and second defendants asked the court to not only dismiss Sunny Ade’s case, but to award N500 million against the musician for the damages that they had suffered from 1997 when Sunny Ade obtained a restraining order against them.
Contrary to Sunny Ade’s claims, the defendants claimed that their relationship with the musician dated back to 1966 when they received and negotiated musical performance bookings for him, in addition to sponsoring his musical tour of the United Kingdom.
According to them, Clause 9 of the 1970 agreement vested the sole right of production, reproduction, sale, use and performance of the works throughout the world in the first defendant.

Anxiety and confusion enveloped the rustic Inuosegba community in Abeokuta as residents discovered items suspected to be severed human wrist, school pupils’ bags and uniforms in a locked building while searching for a missing 18 months old baby.

The 18 months baby identified as Hezekiah Opeyemi Ogundele was taken to a naming ceremony at Inuosegba community around 4pm on Sunday by his brother but while the ceremony was to commence, the baby was discovered to have disappeared mysteriously.

The Nation gathered that the naming ceremony was put on hold indefinitely while apprehensive guests and residents began to comb surrounding bushes and home, searching for the baby.

The mother of the baby, 26 years old Fashion designer, Elizabeth Ogundele, said her elder sister gave birth and was preparing to the naming when it was discovered that her son had disappeared.

In the course of the search, they discovered that a building near the venue of naming, severed wrist and school children’s items were found in a suspicious building within the neighbourhood, forcing the residents to place the property under surveilance as there was no one inside at the time.

The Nation gathered that later in the day, a commercial motorcycle operator visited the building in the wee hour and was arrested and handed over to the Police at the Lafenwa Divisional Police Headquarters, Abeokuta.

The Nation visited the building believed to be owned by one Chief Olasile Ifayemi, about 26 years old young man, and witnessed vandalising the over seven room bungalow and desecrated his shrine inside and over a dozen pots of fetish objects.
