CrimeLagos Hoodlums Break Graduate’s Skull Open With Hammer by Easy023(op): 3:33pm On Jun 15, 2015
Some hoodlums on Friday killed a 30-year-old university graduate, Sodiq Shittu, at the Lawani Street in the Mushin area of Lagos State.
Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the victim’s skull was broken open with a hammer before one of the gang members carried a big stone and crushed his head.
It was learnt that Shittu, whose wife was five months pregnant, graduated from a university in Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident was the third time in four months that hoodlums would kill a resident of the street.
In March, a truck loader, identified as Gbenga, was shot dead by some suspected cult members for reportedly supporting a political party.
On May 19, our correspondent reported that a tricycle driver, Debo Oturu, who was on a visit to his mother, was attacked and shot dead.
Our correspondent was told that the latest incident happened around 4pm on Friday.
When our correspondent visited the street on Saturday, three gun-wielding policemen were seen patrolling the deserted street.
When P UNCH Metro visited the family house of the victim, his relatives shunned our correspondent.
They also did not allow him into the apartment, saying reports on the spate of killings in the area had made no difference.
While at the door, a woman said, “It is barely 24 hours that he was killed and you are here; for what? We are in no mood to talk, please go.”
Another lady wondered what the family would gain from the publication.
She said, “In March, somebody was killed on the street. Less than three weeks ago, they also murdered another person. And now, they have killed him. What did the government do? Or are they waiting for them to kill all the people in the area before they act?”
PUNCH Metro, however, gathered that Shittu was the first of three children and his mother had died two years earlier.
A source said, “He also has a wife, who is five months pregnant.”
Many of the houses on Lawani Street were shut, while commercial activities were grounded, with few residents peeping from their homes.
A resident, who declined identification, told PUNCH Metro that Shittu had bought a sachet of pure water from a vendor and had gone out in company with two of his friends, Ibrahim and Owusu, when he was attacked.
She said, “Sodiq (Shittu) was a gentle young man; he did not make trouble with people. Around 4pm, he went out of the street with two of his friends when they were attacked.
“Actually, there were two guys, who were monitoring their movement. Immediately they came out, the two spies signalled to their colleagues, who were in a commercial vehicle.
“They were many and they waylaid the three boys on the road. Ibrahim ran and escaped. Owusu was stabbed, but he managed to run inside the street. They, however, got Sodiq and pinned him down.
“One of them brought out a hammer and broke his skull open. They also gouged out his eyes. Then, one of them brought a big stone and dropped it on his head.”
Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums attempted to set Shittu’s remains on fire, but his friends and neighbours chased them away.
Policemen from the Alakara Division were said to have taken the corpse and deposited it in a mortuary in the Morocco, Somolu area of the state.
Our correspondent saw blood marks on the spot his corpse was laid after he was killed.
Investigations by PUNCH Metro showed that the hoodlums came from Ereko Street, where a gang leader, identified as Toba, had his domain.
They were said to be embroiled in a supremacy clash with residents of Lawani Street over collection of some fees from traders on the street.
The Lawani residents were said to have resisted Toba’s attempts to dominate their area by taking fees from the traders.
Toba, who is facing murder charges together with another notorious warlord, Muda Adigun, was reportedly released on bail by the state high court.
Some residents, who were approached by our correspondent, declined to speak with our correspondent for safety reasons. They said the police and the government had been compromised.
A woman said, “All the kids here know the sounds of gunshots. Our old women are getting hypertensive and nobody seems to care.”
Another resident said, “Fashola (a former Governor of Lagos State) was here and nothing happened. These people have been invited to Alausa (the state secretariat) for peace to reign, yet nothing happened. For more than seven years, this place has been under siege and we are helpless. You better run if you value your life. They can start again any moment from now and we will not harbour you.”
Attempts by our correspondent on Sunday to reach out to Toba and his alleged gang members failed, as their lines were unreachable.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, when contacted, said he would get back to our correspondent. He had yet to do so.

CrimeCleric Nabbed For Sleeping With Vigilante’s Wife At Madalla by Easy023(op): 7:08am On Jun 12, 2015
A middle-aged cleric has been arrested by members of the vigilante group for allegedly sleeping with the wife of one of the vigilante leaders in Madalla, Niger State.
The cleric, City News learnt, was picked by the vigilantes at Area 1, Garki in the Federal Capital Territory.
A vigilant source told City News that the cleric allegedly used charm to whisk the woman away from her matrimonial home after the husband had travelled out.
In another incident, two men were on Saturday morning arrested by members of the vigilante group for allegedly raping a six year-old girl at Ugnuwar T-junction at Zuba, an Abuja suburb.
A witness, who gave the names of the two suspects as Ismaila and Mahdi, said the incident happened around 8:12 p.m. after the suspects lured the girl into a room and defiled her.
He said the girl, a hawker, was invited by the suspects into a room, saying they detained her after buying the Soya beans, she was hawking till around 8p.m. before they raped her.
According to him, members of her family went in search of her when she failed to return home not until 9:13 p.m.
“The following day, her mother noticed the way she was walking with blood coming out from her body and she became suspicious. She later confessed that the suspects raped her. Members of the vigilante group in the area were immediately invited,” he said.
He said the vigilante group immediately swung into action to arrest the two suspects.
The witness further disclosed that the victim was later taken to a private hospital for treatment, while the two suspects were handed over to the police outpost opposite Zuba Motor Park.
Efforts to get reaction of the Zuba Divisional Police Officer (DPO) were not successful, but a police officer confirmed the arrest of two persons in Zuba for defiling a girl.
“Actually, two men were arrested in connection with raping of a six-year-old girl as they confessed to the crime and were charged to court, while they have been sentenced to two years imprisonment each,” he said.
It would also be recalled that early last month; two men were arrested by vigilante members for allegedly defiling an underrated girl in the area.

BusinessDangote To Supply 24-hour Power To Lagos. by Easy023(op): 10:02am On Jun 11, 2015
Lagos—President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote yesterday said plans have been concluded to construct a gas pipeline to address power supply challenges in Lagos State.
He disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the office of the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.
He said; “We also assured him that we are going to do a Gas Pipeline from Bonny (River State) to pass under the sea (to Lagos.) When it is completed, Lagos state will never ever experience blackout. There will be electricity 24 hours a day.”
Addressing newsmen after the meeting with Ambode, Dangote said they also discussed the ongoing construction of the largest fertilizer plant of two to three million tonnes of Uranium and Amonia in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Ibeju-Lekki.
VISIT: Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode (right) and President Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (left)and during Dangote’s courtesy visit to Ambode at the Lagos House, Ikeja, yesterday.
He noted that the company is also building ”the largest ever single refinery of 650,000 barrels per day, which is by far more than the consumption of Nigeria and that would satisfy our consumption at least for the next seven to 10 years by the time we finish.”
All these projects Dangote said are no small projects.
‘’We will have challenge in getting people to work there, because at the height of it, there will be close to 38,000 people working at the same location, this is something that we have to partner with the state government.
‘’Having 38,000 people on one site, not every one of them will be from the community, others will be from other states, there would be cultural issues and all that, we need to integrate everybody to ensure that the whole thing works out fine.”
He stressed that the visit afforded him the opportunity to assure the governor of his commitment to complete these ongoing projects already embarked upon by the company.
The business mogul promised to continue to support the state government initiatives geared towards securing lives and properties, adding “I have assured him that we really love doing business here, it’s a friendly state for doing business.”
According to him, “There are quite a lot of things that will come along with creating so many jobs. I think Lagos will be one of the fastest growing cities in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
‘’ I can assure you that we would do our own bit in terms of your efforts in policing Lagos, for security and whatever the need is, feel free to call us, we would partner with you and whatever you want us to do to make Lagos a better place”.
Responding, Ambode vowed to embark on strategies that would open the state for new investors, aimed at reducing the rate of unemployment in the state.
He said “I will just call on other investors that wherever it is that we can assist we are willing and ready to make sure that investors have comfortable life and comfortable business profile in Lagos State.”
The governor promised that his administration would open up the state to attract new investors and growth of existing business in the state, adding that the bottom line “is to create jobs for our youths.”

FamilyEmir Sanusi Takes 17-year-old As Fourth Wife. by Easy023(op): 8:47pm On Jun 08, 2015
The Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (Muhammadu Sanusi II), as the American Writer, Henry Miller, said, is an example a philosophical postulation that “the only thing we never get enough is love”. If the information reaching us is anything to go by, the Emir is set to take his fourth wife, come July 2015.
The bridal candidate is the 17-year-old beautiful daughter of the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa. Sanusi, an accomplished banker, who became the 14th Emir of Kano last June, is a respected Islamic Scholar, and his decision to take a new wife is in line with Islamic injunction, which prescribes a maximum of four wives for those who can treat all of them equally.
Already, Sanusi has three beautiful wives – Sadiya, Maryam and Rakiya.
Like in ancient times when bonds between empires were deepened by marriages among royals and nobles across boundaries, the betrothal of the Adamawa princess to Emir Sanusi II may also be a move to deepen royal bond between Adamawa and Kano.
Historically, both emirates have similar origins in the 19th century Usman dan Fodio’s jihad.
Our dependable source hinted us that all is set for the marriage rites and the invitation card is already in circulation as at the time we are compiling this report.
The event has been slated to happen inside the Emirs Palace.
Many dignitaries have been penciled to honour the invitation from the former banker turned Emir.

The coup was reportedly organized by Godefroid Niyombareh, a former military intelligence officer who was removed from office by President Nkurunziza in February.
There have been widespread protests in Burundi for weeks after the ousted President moved to go for a third term in office against the laws of the country.
The coup was announced in a radio broadcast by Mr. Niyombareh and it was made while Mr. Nkurunziza is reportedly out of the country to neighboring Tanzania for a regional meeting of East African Community, EAC. The EAC meeting was called to discuss the protests in Burundi which was becoming violent.
“Forces Vives de the Nation have decided to take charge of the nation,” Mr. Niyombareh said.
Burundi is a landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of Southeast Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Much of the southwestern border is adjacent Lake Tanganyika.
Burundi is considered one of the five poorest countries, with one of the lowest per capita GDPs of any nation in the world.
The country has suffered from warfare, corruption and poor access to education. Burundi is densely populated and has had substantial emigration as young people seek opportunities everywhere. Source{

Satellite TV TechnologyTime To Break Dstv's Monopoly by Easy023(op): 6:34am On Apr 21, 2015
Controversy has continued to trail the latest
increase in subscription fees by satellite
television service provider, MultiChoice Nigeria,
operator of DSTv. But what has perhaps irked
many Nigerians is the blatant refusal by
MultiChoice to comply with a court order. Justice
Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in
Lagos had on April 2 restrained the company
from implementing the new subscription regime
pending the determination of a class-action suit
filed by two subscribers who have now filed a
contempt proceeding against the company. They
are also seeking an order mandating MultiChoice
to render account of all excess tariffs with the
particulars of such subscribers and crediting
their account against the next renewal and/or
remitting such excesses back to the customers.
We consider it the height of recklessness that a
foreign company operating in Nigeria would
disobey an order from our court which is the
only explanation to give for the fact that DSTv's
bouquets are currently being sold to subscribers
at the new rates. The decision seems to be in
line with the arrogant manner with which
MultiChoice treats its Nigerian subscribers who
practically have no other choice.
In developed climes, the mere fact that a suit
has been filed against a business concern and
the company has received notice of the pending
suit, is enough for such enterprise to refrain
from carrying out the act that is the subject of
litigation. But in Nigeria, many people and
companies act above the law because they know
they can get away with such impunity.
However, the fault is not entirely that of
MultiChoice. The Nigerian Broadcasting
Commission (NBC) authorities should be held
responsible for the exploitation of Nigerian
subscribers. First, DSTv does not have a
competitor and being a monopoly, it dictates
whatever price that suits it as long as the
customers desire its services. Two, with the
regulator either looking the other way or just
simply incompetent, MultiChoice has for years
been employing marketing strategies that kill off
other companies trying to provide similar
services to Nigerians. For instance, a product like
GO Tv was aimed at snuffing life out Startimes.
The reality today is that DSTv lacks competition
in the Nigerian market.
This brings to memory the monopoly which MTN
Communications enjoyed before the emergence
of GLOBACOM in the GSM arena. The impression
given by MTN then was that per-second billing
was impracticable. But GLO proved otherwise
and the rest is history. The lesson here is that
except the sleeping regulator which feigned
ignorance while some television channels were in
breach of broadcasting codes during the last
presidential election campaign wakes up from its
slumber, DSTv will continue to exploit its
monopoly status in Nigeria.
Indeed, to confirm NBC's seeming incompetence,
the commission admitted receiving several
complaints from DSTv's subscribers while
expressing displeasure at the increase in
subscriptions. But it did not provide any solution
to the challenge at hand. What should not be
lost here is the fact that world over, private
companies are not known to be nice to the
people they render services to no matter how
they pretend: their motivation is profit.
The companies have higher incentives to exploit
customers when they have market power and
there are no strong antitrust laws. However, it is
the duty of regulators such as the NBC to
provide checks and balances, including providing
incentives to deepen competition and
investigating and punishing abuse if market
power in markets prone to natural monopolies.
Unfortunately, our regulators most often look the
other way or lack the disposition and capacity
for smart regulation while the citizens they are
paid to protect get a raw deal.
Subscribers can protest or hire lawyers to file as
many class-action suits as they like but there
will be no real respite until the NBC wakes up to
break the monopoly of DSTv. Source - http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/time-to-break-dstvs-monopoly/207308/
