A-105-year-old grandmother, Mrs Felicia Fayomi, on Saturday said she was happy to be part of the 2022 governorship election in Ekiti State.

The aged woman, who was brought to the polling unit by one of her granddaughters at Unit 2, Ward 6, Ifaki Ekiti in Ido-osi Local Government Area of the state was full of life.

“I am happy to vote,” she said briefly before she was led back home.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who was with his wife, Betty Anyanwu, wept during his speech, saying they had failed to protect the victims of the terror attack.

He said that the forces on the other side are evil, assuring that they will not triumph forever.

“When I see the sea of heads that are here; it speaks volumes. What has happened to us in Owo in Ondo state is indescribable.

“A lot of words are used to qualify it: dastardly, horrendous. But I still believe there are words to use to describe it, but I am still short of those words.

“We have just 22 (deceased) in this hall. A few of them have been buried because the relatives couldn’t wait till today. But as at the last count, these animals came to the church and murdered 40 people.”

However, in a swift response, the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Dr. Jude Arogundade, declared that Governor Akeredolu had not failed in protecting his people.

Bishop Arogundade said: “You didn’t fail. You are a strong soldier. Your determination to protect those who voted you into power is unquestionable. This was done by cowards. You have tried your best.

He said he spoke to legislators and they made him realize that genocide is ongoing in Nigeria.

He added: “If this is not genocide, I don’t know what genocide is. I know they have promised us they will find the killers, all these are flimsy promises.

“What is this? Why do people have no shame? This country, you don’t have shame any more.

“They just talk but do not match talks with work. So, my brothers and sisters, you didn’t fail, your country failed you, and we know the leaders that failed us and we will continue to hold them accountable. This will not go away,” he said

He wondered why Nigerians need to beg for state police, despite the endless attack and killings.

The clergyman thanked the Governor for accepting to designate a memorial park in honour of the victims, stressing that those who created the situation that made the incident happened has bloods on their hands.

Recall that at least 40 people, including children were killed on Sunday, June 5 by yet to be identified gunmen during a mass service at the  St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo.

 The incident left about 80 others sustained different degrees of injuries during the attack.

Meanwhile, the venue was filled to the brim as families of the victims, people of Owo, and other sympathisers thronged the venue of the funeral mass.

Dignitaries at the funeral mass included: former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko; Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Engr. Ade Adetimehin; and Chieftain of the APC, Chief Olusola Oke.

The local government chairmen were also led by the chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALCON) Ondo State chapter, Augustine Oloruntogbe.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has announced Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

Atiku made the announcement at a meeting attended by PDP executives at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, said a 17-member committee had been set up by the party to pick a running mate.

He said the committee had submitted three names to Atiku to choose from.

The final decision however, Ayu said, was Atiku’s.

Speaking at the announcement event, Atiku said making a choice between the three names had been a difficult decision.

He also noted that some of the qualities he looked out for include someone who understands the enormity of the challenges facing the country and one who has demonstrated, from experience, that he can proffer some solutions.

He said he looked out for one who has the qualities of a president, who can stand in for him when he’s not around.

According to him, while all the three names submitted were qualified, he had to settle for just one: Okowa.

Okowa had arrived the PDP headquarters in a celebratory mood.

Prof Jachimike Adiele, the co-host of The Forum, a public affair programme on Boss FM Radio located inside the All Seasons Hotel in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has been abducted by unidentified gunmen.

Miss Ijeoma Harriet, the co-host of the programme, who posted about the incident on Facebook, reported that Adiele was taken as soon as he stepped out of the premises.

“Some unidentified armed men stormed the premises of Boss Radio, Owerri, and abducted the co-host of The Forum, Prof Jachimike Adiele, to an undisclosed location,” Harriet stated.

“We can not confirm his whereabouts or his present state. We implore the law enforcement agencies to please come to our rescue.”

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has given reason for the resurfacing fuel queues in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and parts of the country.

IPMAN blamed the inadequate supply of petrol from the depots in Lagos for the scarcity.

Mr Chinedu Okoronkwo, IPMAN President, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday was reacting to the resurfacing fuel queues in some parts of the country, especially in Abuja.

Okoronkwo explained that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine had disrupted the smooth distribution of petrol and marketers and transporters are finding it difficult to bridge products to other parts of the country from the depots.

He said: “The huge amount spent in running the diesel trucks to transport fuel is very discouraging because we are running at a loss.

“The current N165 per litre pump price for PMS cannot fit in into the present realities without the pricing template being reviewed.”

He, therefore, appealed to the Buhari-led government to look into the situation by providing palliatives to all marketers to restore normalcy to distribution or review the freight rate.

“The palliative can be making diesel accessible for marketers at discounted rates so that we can easily transport products across the country,” he said.
Fuel queues persisted in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday as motorists waited for hours at filling stations to get the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS.

Several filling stations were closed while some of those selling the PMS stopped mid-day on the excuse that the product had been exhausted.

At Kubwa, an NNPC station sold for three hours, before telling desperate motorists that its PMS had been exhausted.

There was a long queue at the NNPC depot at the Central Business Area, with motorists complaining of spending several productive hours just to buy fuel.

“I have spent three hours here. I left the office at 11.10 am but I am still here at past 2.18pm. It is a waste of manpower,” a businessman, Kayode Ishola, told The Punch.

Several motorists who waited at Oando Filling Station, opposite NNPC depot at the Central Area, were not so lucky, as they were told at 3.40pm that fuel had been exhausted.

Some of the motorists were forced to buy at N300/litre from black marketers who stood in front of the filling station, waiting for disappointed motorists to patronize them.

A sad Mariam Okereke, who identified herself as a civil servant, said she had sought PMS in several filling stations but could not get.

It was, however, gathered that some filling stations such as A.A Rano and Shafa filling stations were selling PMS as at 5.10pm on Monday.

Generally on Monday, motorists moved from one filling station to another, hoping that their next move would yield positive results.

Similarly, motorists accused marketers of adjusting their pumps in order to take advantage of the ongoing scarcity.

A Christian Pastor, Samuel Igbinedion, who said he bought PMS at a filling station in Gudu on Sunday, said he spent nearly N15,000 to fill his tank, rather than the usual 12,500-N13,000.

“Before the fuel scarcity, I would use 12,500 or N13,000 to fill my fuel tank, but I spent almost N15,000 to achieve the same purpose on Sunday,” he said, wondering why people were making money off the situation.

Protesting staff of the National Assembly and National Assembly Service Commission have said they were tired of discussions and conversations on the issue of salary review.

They insisted that all they wanted was credit alerts on their phones. 

The workers under, the auspices of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, said they wouldn’t call off the strike or engage in any conversation with the management of the national assembly until they received payment of the arrears of their unpaid salaries and allowances.

The workers, who blocked the gate of the National Assembly complex refused to listen to the Secretary,  Human Resources and Staff Development of the National Assembly, Suraj Oladoyin, who came to address them on behalf of the National Assembly clerk, Amos Ojo. 

Oladoyin tried to persuade the angry protesters about the need to sit at a table and discuss but they replied him with an uproar chanting, ” All we want are credit alerts,  we are tired of talking.”

The chairman of PASSAN,  Sunday Sabiyi, who tried to bring some calm to the situation, said the executives were also tired of the back and forth over the issue. However, it was expedient that they listened to the voice of reasoning. 

Sabiyi said, “We are all in this together and even the management would benefit from it. In fact, when the money is paid, they would get more money than us. 

“You cannot be more tired than the executives of the association. We have been on this issue for over three years. And this time, our request must be granted but we have to listen to them and have a dialogue. 

It was observed that no member of staff was allowed into the building and those who were not aware or interested in the planned protest, were turned back at the gate. 

It was gathered that the water and the electricity at the NASS complex have also been disconnected.
