The Lagos State government on Friday began crushing commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, seized in the state.

The chairman of the Lagos taskforce in Alausa, Ikeja, Shola Jejeloye, told journalists that the ban has been in existence since February 2020 and has been effective.

He had, on Thursday, in a statement, said that 2,228 seized motorcycles will be crushed.

In May, Mr Sanwo-Olu imposed a fresh ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as ‘okada’ from operating in six local government areas – Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Apapa, and Surulere.

“It is not something that came into place February 1, 2020. And since then we have been on it. It is just that people believe in violating the law,” Mr Jejeloye said.

“Which I don’t think is good enough, in a cosmopolitan city like this. But since June 1, there have been more than 85 per cent compliance in the sense that we don’t see them on the road, on the express any longer. The numbers have drastically reduced.”

Mr Jejeloye noted that security operatives will sustain the enforcement of the ban.

“They (motorcyclists) are watching us and I know that they might believe that the first week of the ban will be thorough and after one week we are going to relax,” Mr Jejeloye said.

He said that another phase of the ban enforcement will start on Monday to check the compliance level.

He added that the latest ban is a new dimension and which will apply to every road user.

The Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 36-year-old Nigerian based in Italy, Nwakanma Michael Uche, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja for ingesting 95 pellets of heroin.
Spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that the suspect was thereafter kept under observation during which he excreted 95 pellets of heroin.
Uche claimed he came to see his parents in Nigeria after 12 years in Italy and to complete his father’s traditional marriage rites.
He also said that he was to be paid N1.5m after the successful delivery of the drugs in Milan.

A federal high court in Abuja has refused to grant bail to Rochas Okorocha, former Imo state governor.

Okorocha had filed an ex-parte application praying the court to release him on bail on the ground that he is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and that his political ambition would be jeopardised if not granted bail.

The presidential primary of the ruling party has been fixed for Sunday, May 29 and Monday, May 30.

Ruling on the bail application on Friday, Inyang Ekwo, the presiding judge, refused to compel the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release him.

Instead, the judge ordered Okorocha to put the federal government on notice to appear in court to defend his detention.

The senator representing Imo West was forcefully arrested on Tuesday when operatives of the EFCC broke into his Abuja home after a seven-hour siege.

The commission had said the arrest was necessitated by Okorocha’s refusal to attend his trial.
The EFCC had, on January 31, filed a 17-count charge against the former Imo governor before a federal high court in Abuja.

According to the EFCC, Okorocha allegedly conspired with others, including a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and five companies to steal N2.9 billion in public funds.

Aside from Okorocha, other defendants listed are Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited.

“SDP cannot be a clone of PDP or APC, in that case why are we offering ourselves as alternatives.

The chairman admitted that there are aspirants with high integrity in APC and PDP and they are the ones the party will welcome.

He said, “We won’t welcome people who have been convicted even if they say they are appealing against the conviction, we won’t welcome people with pending cases even if the case has not been determined.

“If, prima facie, we look at their matter and we see that there are allegations against them that are waiting, because we have a committee consisting of lawyers, if they look at the allegations, particularly when the charge has been proffered, and the person has not been convicted, we will not wish to push people like that as our flag bearers in the face of indictment.”

The chairman said the chances of the party are extremely high in the coming elections based on the poor performance of both APC and PDP in their over 20 years of leadership.

Shonibare also alleged that there are forces that have infiltrated SDP because of the stance it has while trying to hijack it from the founding fathers.

He stated that the party is relying on pending court cases to help it overcome that challenge.

BREAKING: One dead as building collapses in Lagos again

Lagos State has recorded three incidents of building collapse across the Yaba, Ebute-Metta and Okota areas, with 15 lives lost in recent months.

The PUNCH had reported that a 21-storey building on Gerard Road, Ikoyi collapsed on November 1, 2021. About 50 persons perished in the building collapse.

Also, on May 1, 2022, a three-storey building collapsed in the Ebute Metta area of the state leaving at least 10 persons dead.
After the collapse, the Lagos State Government ordered the immediate stoppage of approval for structures above three floors in Ebute-Metta East and West.

“The soil and topography, the low water level and effects, as well as the inability of structures in this area to bear loads above three floors, were considered in arriving at this decision,” Salako said.

“The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority has been directed to henceforth stop taking applications for approval above three floors in the area.

“To guarantee the safety of lives and property by ensuring that we put a halt to lives being cut short by incidents of building collapse, the government has been compelled to invoke the relevant sections of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2019, as amended, to address the crisis,” Lagos Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, had said in a statement on Wednesday, May 11.

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has been promoted to the level of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.
