Hi yall,

Insanity has been insanely intense, but I stuck with it regardless. I have completed 8 days thus far. Unfortunately, I have a terrible case of shin splints, I have tried to continue with it, but the pain is too much to bear. My doctor advised me to take a two week break from any strenuous exercises, else I'll hurt myself more and I might require surgery. Two weekshuh? that's a terribly long time oooo sad I was already loving the way insanity made me feel. The isht is MAD ---- sweat dripping all over my living room floor when I'm done. I will take the Doctor's advice and take it easy -- wont be doing any exercises that exert stress on my legs.

This is not the kind of update I would have loved to give sad

@ Genbuhari, so sorry for your loss I know there is no right words to say to make you or DW feel better, pls know that our prayers are with you at this time and I know my God will surprise you before the year runs out. He is still in the business of blessing his children.

@ all our preggers sis congratulations and know that God will preserve you and LO in the tummy in Jesus Name. (Amen)

My other sis in Gods waiting room it is well with us all, I know in this month of perfection there wil be a whole lot more BFP IJN, this is the month of perfection and I believe God is set to do a new thing in this forum, there was a post of someone asking what are the things people say to us sometimes that day I laughed my head off as I felt in this my short journey of 3 yrs TTC I have seen it all grin. But in it all I give God glory because I know we will all come out victorious, one important thing I want us all to do is rid our minds of all bitterness no matter the form, or who it is the bitterness is channeled at, God can't work in that kind of environment, and lastly never give up as God never fails it doesn't matter the situation.

Sprinkling everyone with truck loads of baby dust love you all. kiss

Hello All,

It's been a while, I hope everyone's doing okay and still working towards healthy living. Personally.

Tomorrow I am starting the 60 days intense INSANITY workout, I wrote about this workout program a few months ago, but I have been putting off starting the program because of how suicidal it looks. I recently bought the DVD set. So starting tomorrow morning and for the next 60 days, I am going to be sweating it out with Shaun T and his team. I will try as much as possible to log my daily activity during the 60 days.

I have taken some before pictures tonight and weighed myself. After 60 days I will post my before and after pictures and weight measurements.

Wish me luck as I embark on this all important journey.

7 exercise myths:

1. If women lift weights, they'll become bulky and masculine looking.

The truth is that women have far too much estrogen to build excessive muscle bulk. Men build big muscles faster due to large amounts of testosterone -- which women don't have. So don't be afraid to weight train. It's vital to decrease body fat, increase lean muscle mass and efficiently burn calories around the clock.

2. Spot reducing will correct those problem areas.

This is absolutely false. There is no such thing as spot reducing. Very often people will ask me for exercises to reduce fat on specific parts of the body such as the waist, abdominal area or triceps. According to Alice Burton, spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise, "By exercising a specific body part, you are building muscle mass in that area that will look lean and mean only after burning the fat over the muscle." This is done through a combination of cardiovascular exercise and overall total body strength training to create metabolically active (calorie burning) lean mass. It's much smarter to focus on the total body than on one body part at a time.

3. Body weight is the best indicator of the effectiveness of your exercise program.

Getting on the scale is the last thing you should be doing to check for change. I hide the scale in my studio so that my clients don't get obsessed with their weight! I only have one because it's needed when measuring body fat and body mass index. Body weight is not a good indicator of change. You should be focusing more on body fat and how your clothes are fitting, because muscle mass is denser and heavier than fat, and it is more compact than fat. Chances are that you will see your waist size decreasing and your body shape improving before you see much change in your weight -- not to mention all the other health benefits you will enjoy. So get off the scale and have your baseline body fat measured... then periodically recheck it to see how you're progressing.

4. No pain, no gain.

This goes totally against my philosophy and how I work with clients. Being in pain is not a good indicator of a sound exercise program. If you're working with a trainer who inflicts pain on you, find another trainer! Exercise must be sustainable in order to be successful, and pain will surely bring your exercise plan to an end due to injury or burnout. Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak states that "it's also important to note that pain can be a warning sign of an exhausted muscle or torn ligament. Be smart -- you know the difference between feeling discomfort and being in pain. Discomfort is acceptable in a challenging workout -- pain is not.

5. Your cardio machine is accurately counting the calories you're burning.

This one comes up all the time and causes clients great distress! These numbers don't mean a thing! I wish these calorie counters would be completely eliminated. It is not possible for a machine to accurately calculate how many calories you are burning without asking for your weight, gender, and body composition. The lower your body fat, the more calories you will burn. So someone with a higher body fat percentage is going to burn less calories than someone with less body fat -- on the same machine. How will the machine be able to differentiate between those two people? So don't fret if you've been on the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes and it's telling you that you've burned a disappointing number of calories. It's just not that smart. Besides, if you're doing interval training as we discussed in previous articles, you're continuing to burn calories long after you get off that machine.

6. Wearing leg and hand weights while walking or running will boost exercise benefit.

Please don't do this. Wearing weights while walking or running puts you at great risk of injuring yourself because it alters your normal gait and movement patterns and is detrimental to joints, nerves, and muscles. There are safe ways to increase aerobic capacity, strength, and caloric expenditure. According to a study done in 2002 in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, this isn't one of them! If you really want to add weight to your walk or run, try wearing a weight vest. This will more evenly distribute the weight and will avoid injury.

7. Muscle soreness after exercise is caused by lactic acid.

This is another false belief. Lactic acid is a byproduct of weight training, but it clears shortly after you finish training -- long before muscle soreness sets in. Muscle soreness is actually caused by microscopic tears that result as you exercise. As bad as this sounds, it's actually a good thing. This is what needs to happen before your muscles can hypertrophy and get stronger as a result of the healing of these tears. It's all part of the process -- but is unrelated to lactic acid.

Though there are many other exercise myths circulating out there, these are the ones that are often brought to my attention. My hope is that understanding the truth about these myths will be helpful to you as you continue to exercise in your quest to live a long, healthy life. Until next month, easy does it... but do it!

Hello everyone! After over seven months of living a healthier lifestyle, I seem to have hit a plateau, no weight loss in quite a while. I know that this is quite normal in weightx loss. Perhaps it could be because as I am losing the remaining flabs, I am gaining muscle mass at the same time. Whatever the case might be, I decided to kick up my workouts by a couple of notches. I did some research about a workout program put together by Men's health magazine --- it is called the 'Spartacus' workout. The spartacus workout program is a series of ten different exercises, each one done for 60 seconds and 15 seconds rest in between each exercise. The entire circuit is supposed to be done three times with 2 minutes rest after completion of the 10 sets of exercises.

Before, wednesday (when I started the spartacus), I thought I was moderately fit, but BOY did the spartacus workout prove me wrong. I was unable to complete one full round of the 10 exercises. My entire body is still in pains from doing the spartacus. Nevertheless, I will not let the initial setback deter me. Starting next week, I plan on doing thespartacus workout 3 days a week and my usual aerobics 2 days a week. It is really an effective workout and a true test of fitness.

Wish me luck as I face this spartacus thing HEAD ON from next week. I wish everyone a good weekend.

Very often you hear people say that exercise without proper control of what passes through the mouth is futile. It all kind of makes sense. But then I always think to myself that if two individuals both consume 3,500 calories per day, one of them works out for alteast one hour per day and the other does absolutely no physical activity.

I find it rather hard to believe that the two individuals described above will be on the same fitness level. My personal belief is that not watching what one eats has a great impact on the effect of their exercise efforts, in the same vein I think an individual is far better off working out than not at all, even if they haven't been able to gain control over their eating habit.

I had to get that off my chest smiley

Interesting article for the ladies......

Women: Why Weights?

"I don't want to bulk up!"

How many times have you heard this? How many times have you said it? Full disclosure: I've uttered these words myself. Then I met someone who taught me the error of my ways and it transformed my health, my physique, and my life.

Lifting weights, also known as strength training or resistance training, is not just about building big muscles. However, as a coach for women trying to lose weight and improve their general health, I run into this misconception all the time. Women with whom I work often approach me with the assumption that I will prescribe a strict diet and a healthy dose of cardio to help them meet their weight loss goals. They're right about the diet, but when I tell them they'll have to spend more time in the weight room than on the treadmill, they're incredulous. "But I don't want to bulk up, I want to lose fat!"

Exactly.

As a fitness competitor and coach, my personal and professional philosophy of training and health is centered on efficiency and effectiveness. I don't believe in wasting time, money, or energy -- my clients' or my own -- and the most effective and efficient way to lose fat and to improve and maintain one's general health is to combine the right diet with a workout program that focuses on strength training.

Strength Training for Fat Loss
The goal of strength training is to increase the amount of lean muscle tissue you have in your body. This isn't just to give you a muscular or toned look, it is to boost your metabolism and maximize your body's ability to burn calories and lose fat. Lean muscle is an active tissue that requires calories for energy beyond the moments you are actually exercising the muscle. The more lean muscle tissue you have on your body, the more calories you burn on an ongoing basis, which means more fat loss. With cardio, the calorie burn stops when you stop exercising. Not only that, while cardio burns fat, it simultaneously diminishes muscle tissue, which works against us in the game of efficient fat loss.

Strength Training for General Health
The benefits of strength training go far beyond just weight loss and weight management. Following a regular strength training program helps to prevent bone loss due to osteoporosis by causing muscles and tendons to pull on the bones, which in turn stimulates bone cells to produce more bone. It can also slow the effect of sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass. To top it off, strength training helps reduce the effect of many other chronic conditions associated with aging, such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.

The Myth of Bulk
Despite the common belief that lifting weights will make you too big, the truth is that your size is in your control. If you want to get bigger you can, but it's very difficult and time-consuming to do so, particularly once you are in your 30s and 40s. The default is that you aren't going to put on a lot of muscle size unless you intentionally try to do so with diet and special training. With a standard strength training program and regular, healthy diet, you will increase your lean muscle mass and your muscles will become more defined as you lose fat, but you will not "bulk up."

Hour_Glass: Hi all, its good to see everyone doing really good.

The previous week was not really bad but it was not good either. I put in just two days outta five last week, no excuse but I had reasons.

1. TOM took over everything from cravings to pains and moodiness, and I allowed her to take over for 1 to 2 days.

2. There were lots of arguments with my friend on my next challenge of running, he is not just cut out for my running in our surrounding. Nice place with good terrain but the guy is afraid of the inhabitants. I was so apprehensive last week I almost cried. We eventually agreed on gym membership, "settled".

3. I got so excited about this challenge that I felt like abandoning everything and starting immediately. I loved the gym (not far from my workplace, fully stocked nice treadmills too), I loved the staff as they were very accomodating and ready to help anyhow. Of course almost immediately 30 day shred became a bore.

But today I am awake from my slumber and trying to finish up the shred if not I lose my rewards (a step or an exercise ball or a large mirror).

So, in someone's words "this is a no nonsense week". I have to double my efforts with 2 workouts per day so I can meet up to start Level 3. I believe it will be easier to finish up now because I am on my annual leave starting today.

My non scale victories:
When I suck my guts in now I see this definition in my abs, that ave not noticed in years.
You go girl, do your thang.

I trust that everyone's doing alright. Well I am still on my grind. In the past two weeks I have increased my workout schedule from at least 3 days a week to at least 5 days a week. This past week I actually did 6 days.....combination of aerobics, weight lifting and skipped a 1,500 today. I have been consistent with my 'healthy living' since August of 2011. So far, I have lost 25lbs and two inches in my waist line. I think I'll be happy to lose another 10lbs, but I am not in a hurry. My philosophy is to keep doing what's right and other things will fall in line - no pressure.

I need to go shopping, none of my belts fit my waist any more. The suits I wear to work are starting to look oversized. I am back to wearing clothes I almost gave away a few months ago, because they couldn't fit back then.

I just saw a picture of Lenny Kravitz looking really fit at 48, and BOY was I inspired.

I wish everyone a productive week ahead.

Hello everyone. HG, slow down ke? I have made a promise to myself that this is going to be very long term ooo. I workout three days a week at the gym, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I feel I should be doing more, but mehn it costs N1,500 to use the gym each time.

I am seriously thinking about buying the insanity workout DVD set. Insanity is a 60 days intensive workout program by fitness expert Shaun T. My only problem is that I don't think I am disciplined enough to wake up an hour earlier than I currently do, to do the workout. Evenings are out of th question because after sitting in traffic for a while I don't think I will have the energy to start working out, that's why I workout at a gym behind my office building and head home afterwards.

Still on insanity --- what do you guys think? I was just thinking last night that if one can get a big enough empty space somewhere in victoria Island and together with other willing participants, do the insanity workout DVD program together for the entire 60 days. I think it will so much fun, it's the logistics around it that I am not so sure about. Well, if others are interested, we might be able to put heads together to make it happen.
