(1) a student is told to draw the graph of y=x^2+4x-6. He is then told to draw a linear graph on the same axis such that the intersection of the two graphs will give the solution to the equation x^2 + 4x - 7=0.what is the equation of the linear graph he needs to draw?
(2)find the product xy if x,3/2,6/7,y, are in a GP

doubleDx: Yea bro, you are right but it seems the values of y will come out in complex numbers which came from the other two complex values of x; substituting x in that form back into the equations gives the values of y in complex numbers too. So, In terms of real numbers, x = ±7.9 & y = ±2.53 checks out.

xy = 20.........................Equation (2)

From equation (2), y = (20/x) ................Equation 3
Substituting equation (3) in (1) yields=>>
x^2 - (20/x)^2 = 56
x^2 - 400/x^2 = 56
x^4 - 400 = 56x^2
x^4 - 56x^2 - 400 = 0

Now lets put p = x^2, so that
x^4 - 56x^2 - 400 = 0
can be rewritten as=>
p^2 - 56p - 400 = 0
Solving the quadratic equation, a = 1, b = (-56) c = (-400)
p = -b±√(b^2 - 4ac)/2a
p = 56±√{(-56)^2 - 4(1)(-400)}/2(1)
p = 56±√{4736)/2
p = 56±68.82/2
p = 62.41 approx. or -6.41 approx.

Remember that p = x^2
:. x^2 = 62.41 or x^2 = -6.41
x = ±√62.41 or x = ±√-6.41
x = ±7.9 and the other value would be a complex number (2.53i).
:. The real values of x are = 7.9 approx., (-7.9) approx.

Substituting each value of x in equation (3) gives you the corresponding value(s) of y.
When x = 7.9
y = 20/x
= 20/7.9
= 2.53 approx.

When x = - 7.9
y = 20/x
= - 2.53 approx.
Note: *** xy = 20 is not linear but hyperbola!
