President Muhammadu Buhari is not opposed to restructuring of the country, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina said yesterday.
According to him, the President is opposed only to any restructuring that will strike at the core of Nigeria’s unity.
Sounds like double speak at play here. Obviously without restructuring the core of Nigeria's unity could be affected. This clamouring will only get worse over time. It's not one of those issues you sweep under the rug. It won't go away. The current system is not working. |

seguntijan: Last year, the 5 biggest US tech companies -- Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft -- spent a combined $49m on Washington lobbyists, while the 5 biggest US banks spent just $19.7m.
This illustrates the dramatic shift that’s taken place under the Obama administration, as “the revolving door with [tech] companies is spinning ever faster -- as it once did with Wall Street.”
The power and influence of tech firms during the Obama government is unprecedented so says The Hustle.
Throughout Obama two terms at The White House, 183 people that worked under him were hired by Google, while 58 Google employees left Google to work for him.
That’s a lot of overlap! And it’s not just the Google.
Former Attorney General, Eric Holder, works at Airbnb now, Obama’s former campaign manager took a job at Uber.
_______________________________________
NOW......
Can we breathe in for a moment and ask where Nigeria's former ministers and top government functionaries are working presently.
The dilemma of Nigeria is that in the last three decades, we have had a situation whereby men and women without a second address found themselves in the corridors of power. Once out of power, they are out of job, and out of meaningful work.
That is why a man who led a state as Governor for eight years will still lobby hard and mess himself up in the process just to be appointed a Senior Special Adviser to the President. Or even a junior minister.
Some will just take anything as long as it comes with an official car, a Police Orderly and a pilot vehicle with siren upfront.
After eight years as Governor?
Years ago, we had an interview with the late President of Zambia Levi Nwanawasa. From the Presidential Palace, he pointed out his Law Chambers at one of the prominent buildings in Lusaka, and told us that 48 hours after leaving office, he will dust up his wig and head to work at his chambers.
Nigeria's bane is the preponderance of professional politicians. Men and women who do not have a second address after political office. That is why we are paying 109 Senators, and 360 members of House of Representatives heavily to sit and make laws for us. Yet in 365 days a year, majority of them sit for less than 35 days.
Why shouldn't we have a part time legislature where we pay only sitting and transport allowances?
Why must we bring 414 men and women and their families to Abuja and pay them so dangerously and stupidly well that their living habits end up distorting the market of virtually every sector and every item in Abuja.
We have even created an industry out of the National Assembly. A humongous consumerist class that add nothing to the growth of this economy.
Can you point out up to 60 former Senators or members of the House of Reps from 1999 to 2015 that are gainfully employed in a value creating wealth creating venture?
Or even the governors, and their deputies ??
Leaders that can't even write a 50 page book to document their experience in leadership so that those coming after them may learn.
Leaders who can't write books.......that is the worst kind of leaders anywhere in the world because they were not even conscious of the decisions they took while in office, so how will they recollect.
Until majority of our politicians are drawn from among wealth creators. This country will not move forward." Top notch analysis there. |

Franco93: In government, two things are involved; its either you walk with the masses or you walk against them. If you walk with the masses you're safe, if you work against them, you're doomed.
The best way to solve the problems of this country is to agree with the masses. We said either restructuring or disintegration. No matter how lengthy they go, they can never beat the masses. You can't silence the masses. Wrestling with the masses is strengthening their nerves. Give us what we want and every body we live in peace, least you'll continue running even from your own shadow. Well said. This is very correct...arrogance won't let them listen to the voice of reason. |

Politics › Re: Akwa Ibom Awards Contract For 21 Storey Liaison Office In Lagos Despite Protest by eclecticbaron: 9:31pm On Aug 22, 2017 |
zoedew: It's some kinda saving for the rainy day! A property of that magnitude in Lagos should take in rent revenue for AKS and huge profits if sold later. I see your point of view. But due to the prevailing economic scenario on ground I would rather he invest that sum in building a seaport whose revenue generation would surpass the 21 storey building in the long run too. Akwa Ibom state would open up big time commercially because of the presence of a seaport.Think of the numerous jobs that would spring up as a result of a seaport. If at all the state needs a 21 storey building as a liaison office it could be in the far future after more important things have been kept in place. This is more like the case of putting the cart before the horse. The state doesn't need this fancy house at this point in time. The govt should focus on projects that will draw investors directly into the state as well as creating jobs for the unemployed in the process. When Udom came into power he's mantra was 'industrialization' as Akpabios' was 'transformation'. Building a liaison office of that magnitude in Lagos doesn't constitute that. It's clear to the blind to see that this govt is looking for a nice avenue to siphon money...maybe 2019 is already loading. |
Politics › Re: Akwa Ibom Awards Contract For 21 Storey Liaison Office In Lagos Despite Protest by eclecticbaron: 7:45pm On Aug 22, 2017 |
If this story is true then Udom wouldn't be doing well at all. So this is how they want to loot the N10 billion from the Paris Club refund?! A state where the ordinary guy in the street is complaining bitterly on how things are rough...jobless graduates everywhere and you want to justify spending N10 bill on a structure in Lag which is obviously has no economic value to the state. What happened to building industries? Even putting that sort of cheddar in building a seaport would have been more useful because of the scale of employment it would create for Akwa Ibomites in particular and Nigerians in general I won't even talk about the revenue it would generate for the state. This is a pure case of misplaced priorities...Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad...the voice of the people is the voice of reason. Govt should re-assess this decision if at all it is true. |

In my own opinion I don't see any value in this proposed project. It doesn't make any sense. How long does the governor spend in Lagos? I think he should use a hotel whenever he visits there. It would be cheaper for the state. It's better the state government sells off this asset use the funds to develop the state. Another strategy to siphon money for themselves. This just shows misplaced priorities by the governor and his handlers. There are better things that money could be used for. Tangible things that would benefit the people of Akwa Ibom state. It baffles me that someone could so confidently say the governor's successor in 2023 I thought that would be as a result of the people's votes plus the achievements of his administration. It's as if the aide can see tomorrow. Anyways all I know is I know nothing. |
