Billionaires are known for not keeping a lot of spending green in their wallets. But that’s not why Bill Gates hates cash. He hates it because of its effect on people at the opposite end of the wealth spectrum—the world’s poor and unbanked. The Better Than Cash Alliance, which was founded last September and is partially financed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, hosted a breakfast at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Speakers from the Philippines, Colombia, and the U.S., among other countries, made the case for why electronic transactions are better than cash payments. Top five reasons, according to the alliance: Transparency: Less corruption and theft when payments can be easily tracked. In Afghanistan, U.S. aid agencies use it so workers aren’t so vulnerable to robbery. Security: The money gets where it’s supposed to go. Financial inclusion: Electronic payment is a way for unbanked people to establish a record of on-time payment of their bills. This can be an “on-ramp” for them to get other services, such as loans, speakers said. Cost savings: Moving physical cash around is costlier than zipping electrons. Many poor people, however, still find it cheaper to use cash, because some cashless networks charge high fees. Access to new markets: This benefit is mainly for providers of financial services. Kenya is a role model for the developing world when it comes to cashless payment. Its M-Pesa network, launched in 2007, has agents “on every block,” says Neal Keny-Guyer, chief executive of Mercy Corps, a nonprofit that’s a member of the alliance. Mauricio Cárdenas, Colombia’s minister of finance and public credit, said in an interview that he hopes within the year the national legislature will pass a law allowing nonbanks to take in cash and issue electronic vouchers. The key is ensuring that the people who take in the cash are as well-supervised as bank tellers. “We see this as a first step,” Cárdenas said. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/bill-gates-hates-cash--here-s-why-185938362.html |
Back in 1996, Toyota was first into a then-novel automotive segment, the cross-over. Or was it the mini-ute? Oddball car monikers aside, the RAV4 added up to a hit, attracting buyers who liked the idea of having a capable car-based off-roader with ample cargo room without the growing gas penalty that came with owning a full-size SUV. Sales were swift out of the gate, around 50,000 annually for the first years then doubling and tripling in short order. Last year, 170,000 drivers bought RAV4s, and the Japanese automaker is hoping to hit the 200,000 mark soon. That lofty sales goal rests on the shoulders of the fourth generation of that Japanese trailblazer, whose re-design comes not a moment too soon. The small-ute market has mushroomed over the past decade, and now includes perennial favorites such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Ford Escape. Now add to that mix more upmarket options including Audi’s Q5 and BMW’s new X1, and soon enough Porsche’s mini-Cayenne, the Macan. So what’s Toyota got up its sleeve to stave off such formidable competition? For 2013, the RAV4 does a two-step, at once succumbing to the demographic reality of its consumer base while at the same time adding enough whiz-bang goodies so that its affordable package (from $23,300) attracts new buyers. In the new model year’s out-with-the-old category is the disappearance of the V6 engine option, which fewer than 10% of RAV4 buyers ordered. Now there’s only one engine choice, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder good for 176 hp and 24/31 mpg city/highway for the front-wheel-drive version (all-wheel-drive drops mileage by about 2 mpg, and adds $1,400 to your window sticker). The ute’s long-standing side-hinge rear door is being replace by a more traditional liftgate with a new power option (that move puts the car’s outboard spare tire beneath the rear cargo area). And lastly, a third-row seat is no longer available, though that’s not a tremendous loss (let’s be honest, third-row seating is practical in a Toyota Land Cruiser or GMC Denali, but in anything smaller you better be carting around Hobbitts). That’s it for deletions. Added to the mix are a six-speed transmission that replaces a tired four-speed slushbox. New Sport and Eco mode options toggle between snappy computer-controlled shifts and a more fuel-efficient operation. There’s also a standard back-up camera across the LE, XLE and Limited line-up. On the XLE and up, RAV4 comes with dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, navigation, heated mirrors and Toyota’s smartphone-savvy Entune entertainment system. The Limited adds the power liftgate, some leather and an uprated JBL 11-speaker, 576-watt stereo for those post-kid-drop-off rides home alone. It’s worth noting here that Toyota will soon unveil an all-electric RAV4 EV, made with help from Tesla. This version will reel off 100 miles on one electric charge, has a top speed of 100 mph, and will noiselessly hustle to 60 mph in 7 seconds in Sport mode. If it has even a shred of the impressive functionality of Tesla’s award-hogging Model S, this new EV SUV could prove a hit, although its $50,000 price tag will certainly be a barrier to many. Inside the far more affordable base RAV4, the look is pure entry-level Toyota, with a mix of plastic, cloth and leather surfaces that while uninspiring also won’t drive you to madness trying to keep them tidy. Ergonomics are thoughtful and intuitive. Outside, there’s not much to shout about, but that’s really the point. RAV4 buyers aren’t shopping for sheetmetal fashion statements or reliable people and cargo carriers that double as road rockets. If Toyota reaches the 200,000 sales mark this year with the redesigned RAV4, it will be because the venerable mini-ute’s sensible fans were once again taken with a very familiar, if pleasantly updated, automotive package. http://autos.yahoo.com/news/2013-toyota-rav4--a-familiar-and-pleasantly-updated-package-225320863.html

I noticed it has come a tradition to rent/borrow big cars for wedding. Yesterday around Ikeja, the owner of a rented/borrowed car landed at the wedding reception. When he got to where the car was packed, he asked who packed the car? The bridegroom answered "its my car". The owner looked at other people who followed him, then he moved back and called the police. In 5 minutes, the police stormed the place with 2 fully loaded keke Napep(lol). Sundenly, we saw The bridegroom, and others started begging. What happen was that owner of the car gave it to a dealer to sell, the foolish car dealer never knew car would be used at the owner's neigborhood. I am sure he would have collected atleast N20k from the bridegroom. They called the dealer several time, but he never pick it. The owner was such a nice person, he left the car with them and the police took picture and left. My advice, if you must borrow/rent "by-force"a car for your wedding never go to a car dealer. |
A Nigerian pharmaceutical researcher and winner of the 2012 African Pharmaceutical Researcher of the Year, Ben Amodu, has said the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently endorsed the use of herbal supplements for the treatment of terminal illnesses, notably HIV/AIDS. Amodu said this after he was honoured by the African Leadership Magazine at the Burj-Arab Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), adding that the WHO had also encouraged the use of indigenous herbs to manage various illnesses. He said at present, “about 80 per cent of world population use herbs,” adding that the honour would motivate him to go into research where orthodox drugs had failed. This is just as he informed that he had also found a cure for Hepatitis B and C. http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/3863-who-approved-herbal-supplements-for-hiv-aids-treatment-%E2%80%94researcher |
BANJUL (Reuters) - Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has decreed a four-day working week for public officials, making Friday a day of rest to allow residents in the small West African state more time for prayer and agriculture. Jammeh said in statement the decision was made in light of demand from the general public. The shorter working week will take effect from February 1. The new public sector working times in Gambia, a sliver of land stretching inland from the West African coast along the river Gambia, will be Mondays to Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. "This new arrangement will allow Gambians to devote more time to prayers, social activities and agriculture - going back to the land to grow what we eat and eat what we grow for a healthy and wealthy nation," the presidential statement said. Though it has a secular state, Gambia's population is overwhelmingly Muslim. Jammeh seized power in the popular European tourist destination in a bloodless military coup in 1994. He has since been accused by activists of human rights abuses during his rule. In August, his government drew international condemnation for executing nine death-row inmates by firing squad, prompting it to suspend 38 other planned executions. The government warned, however, that the executions would go ahead if the crime rate increases. One of Africa's more controversial rulers, Jammeh said in 2007 he had found a remedy of boiled herbs to cure AIDS, stirring anger among Western medical experts who claimed he was giving false hope to the sick. Flying was less deadly in 2012 than in any year since 1945, but that does not mean all airlines are equally safe. The Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC), which collects information about aviation accidents and safety, has published its annual Airline Safety Ranking. The ratings take into account the number and deadliness of the hull losses (destroyed airplanes) they have suffered in the past 30 years, how they have fared more recently, and how many flights they have flown without incident. The results do not take into account the cause of the hull losses, or whether the airline is at fault, so they are not a perfect measure of how safely an airline behaves. Of 60 ranked airlines, here are the 10 with the worst safety records, including the number of hull losses since 1983, and how many fatalities they caused: #10 SkyWest Airlines: 3 hull losses; 22 dead #9 South African Airways: 1 hull loss; 159 dead #8 Thai Airways International: 5 hull losses; 309 dead #7 Turkish Airlines: 6 hull losses, 188 dead #6 Saudia: 4 hull losses; 310 dead #5 Korean Air: 9 hull losses; 687 dead #4 GOL Transportes Aéreos: 1 hull loss; 154 dead #3 Air India: 3 hull losses; 329 dead #2 TAM Airlines: 6 hull losses; 336 dead #1 China Airlines: 8 hull losses; 755 dead Update: This post has been updated to clarify how JACDEC produces its safety rankings. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/worlds-10-most-dangerous-airlines-171800816.html |

China’s super-rich suffer because of the pressures brought about by their fortunes and are less happy than ordinary millionaires, according to a survey by a leading wealth magazine. “The richer you are, the less happy you are,” concluded the poll of more than 500 Chinese millionaires by the Hurun Report, which compiles an annual list of China’s richest people. The survey defined “millionaires” as those with personal wealth of 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) or more, and the super-rich as those with 10 times as much, 69 of whom were included. “Money also brings you problems,” said Hurun Report founder Rupert Hoogewerf. “These problems could be pressure to perform, pressure to satisfy your customers, pressure from all these different aspects that come about when you have a big business,” he told AFP on Wednesday. Nearly 30 percent of all those surveyed said they could not balance work and life, the survey showed. More than half were unhappy about spending so little time with their families. On well-being, more than a quarter were unhappy with their health while more than a third believed they did not exercise enough. Chinese millionaires only sleep an average of 6.6 hours a night during the working week, the report found, with some 27 percent sleeping for less than six hours. Male and female millionaires were split on some issues. Men considered setting up their own companies as the happiest moment of their lives, while women put falling in love as number one, the survey said. Self-made female millionaires were more likely to be divorced with 35 percent of them divorced or unmarried — twice the statistic for male millionaires. The figures come after the daughter of China’s richest man, beverage magnate Zong Qinghou, lamented in an interview that she was over 30 and had never had a boyfriend. Chinese media said Zong Fuli, who helps her father run the Wahaha company, was still single because she could not tell whether potential suitors were chasing her for love or money. In September, the Hurun Report estimated Zong Qinghou to be worth $12.6 billion. http://.mobi/output.php?id=5530 |

Identical twin sisters got married to identical twin brothers and the two couples are still very much in love. Darlene and Diane Nettemeier went to a twins’ festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, where they met another set of twins but first, they met one, Mark Sanders who caught their eye. Sanders called his identical brother, Craig, down from their hotel room to meet the ‘neat’ blondes and that is how the whole love story unfolds. Craig and Diane got married and Mark and Darlene too got married. Today, they live in houses next door to each other in Texas, and have five children between them. Craig, 44, said that he felt an ‘instant attraction’ to just one of the blonde twins, Darlene, despite them looking the same. “When I went downstairs I was instantly attracted to the one on the right. Diane was standing on the right and Darlene was standing on the left and I was instantly attracted to Diane,’ he said while appearing on the Jeff Probst show. After meeting in 1998, the boys went to visit the girls at their home in St. Louis, Missouri, and took them on a double date to a baseball game. They hit it off that day, got engaged on the same day, and decided to share a wedding. “We had a double wedding and Darlene and I decided that we wanted to wear the same dress and then our dad walked us both down the aisle at the same time,” Diane said. Diane and Craig went ahead and produced identical twin sons, 12-year-olds Colby and Brady in 2001 beating a million-to-one odds to do so. Craig Sanders said they see themselves as “Just two normal families who happen to be close to one another.” Mark Sanders admitted identical twins marrying identical twins was ‘pretty unusual.’ “There aren’t that many of them that we are aware of in the United States, and when you throw in a third set of identical GUYS, WHAT DO YOU THINK? BAMAKO/PARIS (Reuters) - French aircraft pounded Islamist rebels in Mali for a second day on Saturday and neighboring West African states sped up their plans to deploy troops in an international campaign to prevent groups linked to al Qaeda expanding their power base. France, warning that the control of northern Mali by the militants posed a security threat to Europe, intervened dramatically on Friday as heavily armed Islamist fighters swept southwards towards Mali's capital Bamako. Under cover from French fighter planes and attack helicopters, Malian troops routed a rebel convoy and drove the Islamists out of the strategic central town of Konna, which they had seized on Thursday. A senior army officer in the capital Bamako said more than 100 rebel fighters had been killed. A French pilot died on Friday when rebels shot down his helicopter near the town of Mopti. Hours after opening one front against al Qaeda-linked Islamists, France mounted a commando raid to try to rescue a French hostage held by al Shabaab militants in Somalia, also allied to al Qaeda, but failed to prevent the hostage being killed. French President Francois Hollande made clear that France's aim in Mali was to support the West African troop deployment, which is also endorsed by the United Nations, the European Union and the United States. Western countries in particular fear that Islamists could use Mali as a base for attacks on the West and expand the influence of al Qaeda-linked militants based in Yemen, Somalia and North Africa. "We've already held back the progress of our adversaries and inflicted heavy losses on them," Hollande said. "Our mission is not over yet." A resident in the northern city of Gao, one of the Islamists' strongholds, reported scores of rebel fighters were retreating northward in pickup trucks on Saturday. "The hospital here is overwhelmed with injured and dead," he said, asking not to be identified for fear of reprisals. In Konna, a shopkeeper reported seeing scores of dead Islamist fighters piled in the streets, as well as the bodies of dozens of uniformed soldiers. A senior official with Mali's presidency announced on state television that 11 Malian soldiers had been killed in the battle for Konna, with around 60 others injured. Human Rights Watch said around 10 civilians had died in the violence, including three children who drowned trying to cross a river to safety. It said other children recruited to fight for the Islamists had been injured. With Paris urging West African nations to send in their troops quickly, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, chairman of the regional bloc ECOWAS, kick-started a U.N.-mandated operation to deploy some 3,300 African soldiers. TROOPS BY MONDAY The mission had not been expected to start until September. "By Monday at the latest, the troops will be there or will have started to arrive," said Ali Coulibaly, Ivory Coast's African Integration Minister. "Things are accelerating ... The reconquest of the north has already begun." The multinational force is expected to be led by Nigerian Major-General Shehu Abdulkadir and draw heavily on troops from West Africa's most populous state. Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal each announced they would send 500 soldiers. French army chief Edouard Guillaud said France had no plan to chase the Islamists into the north with land troops, and was waiting for ECOWAS forces. France has deployed some special forces units to the central town of Mopti and sent hundreds of soldiers to Bamako in "Operation Serval" - named after an African wildcat. Concerned about reprisals on French soil, Hollande announced he had instructed Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault to tighten security in public buildings and on public transport in France. Hollande's intervention in Mali could endanger eight French nationals being held by Islamists in the Sahara. A spokesman for one of Mali's rebel groups, Ansar Dine, said there would be repercussions. "There are consequences, not only for French hostages, but also for all French citizens, wherever they find themselves in the Muslim world," Sanda Ould Boumama told Reuters. "The hostages are facing death." The French Defense Ministry said its failed bid on Friday night to rescue a French intelligence officer held hostage in Somalia since 2009 was unrelated to events in Mali. The ministry said it believed the officer had been killed by his captors along with at least one French commando. But the Harakat Al-Shabaab Al-Mujahideen insurgent group that was holding Denis Allex said he was alive and being held at a location far from the raid. RED ALERT The French Foreign Ministry stepped up its security alert on Mali and parts of neighboring Mauritania and Niger on Friday, extending its red alert - the highest level - to include Bamako. France advised its 6,000 citizens in Mali to leave. Thousands more French live across West Africa, particularly in Senegal and Ivory Coast. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Friday urged an "accelerated international engagement" and said the bloc would speed up plans to deploy 200 troops to train Malian forces. A U.S. official said the Pentagon was weighing options such as intelligence-sharing with France and logistics support. French officials suggest U.S. surveillance capacity, including unmanned drones, would prove valuable in vast northern Mali. In Britain, a spokesman said Prime Minister David Cameron had spoken to Hollande to express support for France's intervention and to offer two C-17 transport planes to assist the mission. He said both men discussed "the need to work with the Malian government, regional neighbors and international partners to prevent a new terrorist haven developing on Europe's doorstep and to reinvigorate the U.N.-led political process once the rebel advance has been halted". Military analysts voiced doubt, however, about whether Friday's action was the start of a swift operation to retake northern Mali - a harsh, sparsely populated terrain the size of France - as neither equipment nor ground troops were ready. "We're not yet at the big intervention," said Mark Schroeder, of the risk and security consultancy Stratfor. More than two decades of peaceful elections had earned Mali a reputation as a bulwark of democracy - but that image unraveled in a matter of weeks after a military coup last March that paved the way for the Islamist rebellion. Interim President Dioncounda Traore, under pressure for bolder action from Mali's military, declared a state of emergency on Friday. Traore cancelled a long-planned official trip to Paris on Wednesday because of the violence. "Every Malian must henceforth consider themselves a soldier," he said on state TV. On the streets of Bamako, some cars were driving around with French flags draped from the windows to celebrate Paris's intervention. "It's thanks to France that Mali will emerge from this crisis," said student Mohamed Camera. "This war must end now."
