Culture / Re: We Could Learn A Thing Or Two From Our Own History Anyway; King Jaja Of Opobo. by economia: 11:30am On Jul 10, 2016
bitchcrafts:
King Jaja of Opobo
(1821-1891)
Born in Igboland and sold as a slave to a Bonny trader at the age of twelve, he
was named Jubo Jubogha by his first master. He was later sold to Chief Alali,
the head of the Opubo Annie Pepple Royal House. Called Jaja by the British,
this gifted and enterprising individual eventually became one of the most
powerful men in the eastern Niger Delta.
The Niger Delta, where the Niger empties itself into the Gulf of Guinea in a
system of intricate waterways, was the site of unique settlements called city-
states.

From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Bonny, like the other city-states,
gained its wealth from the profits of the slave trade. Here, an individual could
attain prestige and power through success in business and, as in the case of
Jaja, a slave could work his way up to head of state. The House was a socio-
political institution and was the basic unit of the city-state.
In the nineteenth century—after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807—the
trade in slaves was supplanted by the trade in palm oil, which was so vibrant
that the region was named the Oil Rivers area.

The Houses in Bonny and other city-states controlled both the internal and
external palm oil trade because the producers in the hinterland were forbidden
to trade directly with the Europeans on the coast; the Europeans never left
the coast for fear of malaria.

Astute in business and politics, Jaja became the head of the Anna Pepple
House, extending its activities and influence by absorbing other houses,
increasing operations in the hinterland and augmenting the number of
European contacts. A power struggle ensued among rival factions in the
houses at Bonny leading to the breakaway of the faction led by Jaja. He
established a new settlement, which he named Opobo. He became King Jaja
of Opobo and declared himself independent of Bonny.

Strategically located between Bonny and the production areas of the
hinterland, King Jaja controlled trade and politics in the delta. In so doing, he
curtailed trade at Bonny and fourteen of the eighteen Bonny houses moved to
Opobo.

In a few years, he had become so wealthy that he was shipping palm oil
directly to Liverpool. The British consul could not tolerate this situation. Jaja
was offered a treaty of "protection", in return for which the chiefs usually
surrendered their sovereignty. After Jaja's initial opposition, he was reassured,
in vague terms, that neither his authority nor the sovereignty of Opobo would
be threatened.

Jaja continued to regulate trade and levy duties on British traders, to the point
where he ordered a cessation of trade on the river until one British firm agreed
to pay duties. Jaja refused to comply with the consul's order to terminate
these activities, despite British threats to bombard Opobo. Unknown to Jaja,
the Scramble for Africa had taken place and Opobo was part of the territories
allocated to Great Britain. This was the era of gunboat diplomacy, where Great
Britain used her naval power to negotiate conditions favorable to the British.
Lured into a meeting with the British consul aboard a warship, Jaja was
arrested and sent to Accra, where he was summarily tried and found guilty of
"treaty breaking" and "blocking the highways of trade".

He was deported to St. Vincent, West Indies and four years later, he died en
route to Nigeria after he was permitted to return.

Ironically, Jaja's dogged insistence on African independence and effective
resistance exposed British imperialism and made him the first victim of foreign
territorial intrusion in West Africa. The fate of Jaja reverberated through the
entire Niger delta. Amazed at this turn of events, the other delta chiefs quickly
capitulated.

In addition, the discovery of quinine as the cure for malaria enabled the British
traders to bypass the middlemen and deal directly with the palm oil producers,
thus precipitating the decline of the city-states.

King Jaja's downfall ensured a victory for British supremacy, paving the way
for the eventual imposition of the colonial system in this region by the end of
the century.

Food / Re: 20 Wonder-working Kitchen Tricks You Never Knew! by economia: 3:25am On Jul 05, 2016
There are so many kitchen tricks that many of us don’t know about and this list is an eye opener. You’re welcome!!

(1). Mistakenly added too much salt to your food? Just drop in one peeled potato or yam. The potato helps absorb the excess salt.

(2). Angry over cracked boiling eggs? Add a pinch of salt to keep the shells from cracking.

(3). Burned a pot of rice? Place a slice of piece of white bread on top of the rice for 5-10 minutes to draw out the burned flavour. Be careful not to scrape the burned pieces off of the bottom of the pan when serving the rice.

(4). To clean iron cook-ware, avoid using detergents. Alternatively, scrub them with salt and a clean dry paper towel.

(5). When storing empty airtight containers, throw in a pinch of salt to avoid having that damp smell.

(6). When making gravy (stews) and accidentally burn it, turn your mixture it into a fresh pan and continue. Add a pinch of sugar, doing that takes out the burnt taste. P.S watch the quantity of sugar though.

(7). Never put citrus fruits (Oranges, Lemons, limes, etc) or tomatoes in the fridge. The low temperatures degrades the aroma and flavor of these fruits.

(cool. Before you chop fresh red peppers, rub a little bit of vegetable oil into your hands and your skin won’t absorb the spiciness.

(9). If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s past the fresh stage.

(10). To banish ants from the kitchen, find out where they are coming in and cover the hole with petroleum jelly(Vaseline). Ants won’t trek through the jelly. If they are coming under a door, draw a line on the floor with chalk. The little bugs also won’t cross a line of chalk.

(11). Don’t store your bananas in a bunch or in a fruit bowl with other fruits. Separate your bananas and place each in a different location. Bananas release gases which causes other fruits (including other bananas) to ripen quickly. Separating them will keep them fresh longer.

(12). To keep potatoes from budding in the bag, put an apple in with them.

(13). If you manage to have some leftover wine, cocktail drinks at the end of the evening, freeze it in ice cube trays for easy addition to sauces (white wine works wonders in sauces.)

(14). After boiling pasta or potatoes, cool the water and use it to water your house plants. The water contains nutrients that your plants will love.

(15). When defrosting meat from the freezer, pour some vinegar over it. Not only does it tenderize the meat; it will also bring down the freezing temperature of the meat and cause it to thaw quicker.

(16). Always keep an aloe vera plant in your kitchen. It’s invaluable when you scrape your arm or burn your finger. Just break off a leaf and rub the gel on the injury.

(17). Too much fat or greese in your stew? Drop in an ice cube. The ice attracts the fat, which you can then scoop out. This works wonders.

(18). To reuse cooking oil without tasting whatever was cooked in the oil previously, while heating the oil, drop a small piece of fresh ginger. It absorbs any flavors and odors.

(19). If your milk always goes bad before you can finish it, try adding a pinch of salt to the carton when you first open it. It stays fresh for a few more days.

(20). If two drinking glasses become stuck together after stacking, it’s not impossible to separate them. Just put ice in the inner glass and dunk the outer glass in warm water. The warm glass will expand and the cold glass will contract, making the glasses separate easily.

BY THE WAY WE ARE NOT JEWISH PEOPLE, IN CHRIST THERE IS NEITHER JEW NOR GREEK, IF YOU ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR LIFE THEN CELEBRATE AS UNTO THE LORD FOR THE SCRIPTURES SAYS THAT WE SHOULD DO ALL WE DO AS UNTO THE LORD WITHOUT MURMURING AND COMPLAINING, THEN IT ALSO SAYS WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE GOOD, PURE, PRAISE WORTHY, THINK ON THESE THINGS, SO TELL ME IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS BAD, CORRUPT AND CONDEMNATION WORTHY..... REMEMBER AS A MAN THINKS IN HIS HEART SO HE IS.

JESUS. AND THAT MY BROTHER IS HOW WE ARRIVED AT CHRISTMAS.

CELEBRATING OR NOT CELEBRATING IT DOESN'T REMOVE YOUR NAME FROM THE BOOK OF LIFE, IT IS NOT A SIN. ITS YOUR CHOICE SO DONT MAKE A DOCTRINAL LAW OUT OF IT.

EASTER TOO IS NOT BIBLICAL O COS ITS MEANT TO BE CALLED PASSOVER.

THERE ARE MANY OTHERS. ITS NOT TODAY YOU CAN NOW CHANGE IT, BUT YOU CAN CHOOSE NOT TO CELEBRATE ANYMORE.
Sports / Re: Never Give Up! Read Argentine Teacher Inspirational Letter To Messi- Goal.com by economia: 10:46pm On Jun 28, 2016
alexistaiwo:
Teacher Yohana bleeps' letter made waves across Argentina, as she called on Barcelona star Lionel Messi to reconsider his decision to retire
Lionel Messi's retirement from the Argentina national team has turned the country upside down in the past few days, with an entire nation stunned by the news after Chile beat them in the Copa America final.
Argentina president Mauricio Macri, Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta and football god Diego Maradona have begged for the Barcelona forward to change his mind, but perhaps the most moving message of all has come via Entre Rios teacher Yohana bleeps.
Her passionate plea quickly went viral among the millions of Argentina supporters desperate for Messi to reconsider his international retirement.
The letter in full:
"Lionel Messi,
"You will probably never read this letter. But I will write it all the same, not as a football fan but as an Argentine teacher, in this profession that I chose and love as you love your own.
"I could write to you about your marvelous talents in the most popular sport in our country, the pleasure it gives me to be one of the generations lucky enough to see you show off the magic in your boots, or about the admiration you awake in every country in the world. But that would only serve to repeat cliches. Instead I will write for your help in a much tougher challenge than you have ever faced, I want you to help me in the difficult mission of moulding the behaviour of those kids who see you as a football hero and an example to follow.
"No matter how much love and dedication I put into my work, I will never receive from my students that incredible fascination they feel for you. Now they will see their biggest idol give up. I beg you not to give the satisfaction to mediocre people; those who, frustrated by the thousands of dreams they didn't achieve aim their resentment at a football player, those who speak about the rest because it is free and easy to do so. You are hearing this from a teacher who, despite the distance between us, deals with that nasty Argentine habit of thinking somebody else's job is simple, that scoring goals is as easy as building a house or a future for a person. It is that sick compulsion to bring someone down, or turn into idiotic judges that slam with contempt and arrogance the performance of others, only valuing victories and writing off mistakes as failures, those same errors that make us human and keep us learning.
"Please do not quit, don't let my students think that this country only cares about winning and coming first. Do not show them that no matter how successful you are in life, you will never manage to keep the rest happy and, worse still, do not make them feel they must live to make others happy. Do not send them this mistaken message that, despite overcoming so many adversities, fighting from a young age to become the triumphant man you are today, all that is tainted by the critics of those envious people who deep down would kill to be like you.
"If something like you, who had your family at your side, who has a hefty personal wealth and the support of so many people, cannot do it, how can they believe they are capable of carrying on having to face so many battles, day-in, day-out?
"I do not talk to them about how wonderfully Messi plays football, but of the thousands of free kicks he practised to manage to put the ball in the angle beyond the reach of any goalkeeper. I tell them of the Messi who put up with countless painful injections to keep chasing his dream; the Messi who with all the money he has earned helps other kids like him with their own difficult situations; I tell them of the adult Messi, the man who raised a family and deals with the most important job in the world, being a good parent; the Messi who stops a fan who mobs him in the middle of a match from being harmed; the Messi who can even miss a penalty because our faults make us humans, and that shows them even the greatest of all time is imperfect as well.
"Do not give up, do not put the shirt with our country's colours away, because when you pull the shirt on you become an Argentine that represents us all. Not all of us await medals and cups to feel wonderfully proud you are one of us. Please do not make my students feel that coming second is a defeat, and that the value of a person depends on how full his trophy cabinet is, or that losing a game is to lose glory.
"My students need to understand that the noblest heroes, be they doctors, soldiers, teachers or football players, are those who give the best of themselves for the good of others, even knowing that nobody will value them more for that, knowing that if they do manage a triumph it will belong to everyone while if they fail it will be their failure alone. Even so they keep trying. But above all, they have heroism and courage, when they fight and overcome losses with bravery and integrity, even with the whole universe saying we will never make it.
"And one day they will enjoy the greatest victory: they will feel happy being themselves, with the demons they had to face in order to make it no longer an issue.
"Everybody talks about balls, I believe in the strength of your heart."

“The N1, 219, 490,000 was in two consignments but flown in the same aircraft twice in the morning and in the evening. From FAAN records, the first cash of N724, 500,000 arrived at Akure Airport at an estimated time of 9.38am and the second was at 17.57hours.
“A bullion van was brought by Zenith Bank to the tarmac at the airport in Akure to evacuate the cash to Zenith Bank at Plot 13, Alagbaka Estate, Akure.

“Obanikoro handed over the funds to Fayose’s associate, Abiodun Agbele (alias Abbey). This Abiodun in company with the bank officials moved the money to Zenith Bank in Akure.” The EFCC gave details of how the N1, 219, 490,000 was shared to Fayose and others by Agbele.”
The document said: “The N1, 219, 490,000 was not deposited in any account but it was kept in a vault in the bank. It took the bank officials about 10 days to count. The bankers refused to make entry until it was counted, “Shortly after confirming the figure, Abiodun was used to coordinate the disbursement of the funds. On June 26, 2014, the wanted associate (Abiodun Agbele) paid N137million into Ayodele Fayose’s account 10003126654 with Zenith Bank through Teller-0556814.

Fayose’s BVN on the teller is 22338867502. On August 22, 2014, he paid N50million into the same account. By the records from the bank, Abiodun paid another N118, 760,000 into Fayose’s account on 27/8/14. “Based on the transfers, Fayose moved N300million to a Fixed Deposit Account No 9013074033 with Zenith Bank at 15, Olusola Abiona Street, Olorunda Estate, Alapere Ketu. He has the same BVN-22338867502.
“After that, Abiodun deposited another N100million from the N1, 219, 490,000 into Spotless Hotel Account run by Fayose and Helen Olayemi Fayose with Account No. 1010170969, Fayose’s BVN is 223338867502 and Helen’s BVN in the account is 22298990256.

“The governor and Helen are the two directors and signatories of Spotless Hotel account.” In the course of the investigation, the EFCC team dug up how De Privateer Limited (a company owned by Abiodun Agbele) with Account No. 1013835889 received N219, 490,000 on June 18, 2014.
“On June 19, 2014, the same account received N300million and another N200million on June 23, 2014. The BVN of the account is 22235692890.
A top official of the EFCC said: “Fayose benefited from the ONSA slush funds when he was yet to be a governor. So, the fact that he has immunity now as a governor does not mean we should not investigate him.

“The EFCC also has the right to interact with all those connected with the illegal withdrawal of public funds and the diversion of the cash.”
Regarding the fate of Fayose’s associate, the source added: “We will invite him for interrogation; we have already initiated the process.”

Gone are the days when men remove their cap to greet an elder, these days all they do is just remove one of their earpiece...
Religion / Let's Pull Down The Walls by economia: 4:45pm On Jun 03, 2016
I have just been wondering....
Okay let me allow you into my thoughts....
Dear Christian brother/sister, If the Redeemed Christian Church of God decides to change its name, pastor , church logo & doctrine, would that affect you in anyway? I mean would that affect your Christianity? Your faith?
If Winners' chapel decides to do same, and The Christ Embassy, and The mountain of Fire and
Miracles, and the Deeper Life Church and the Assemblies of God Church and all of these churches decide to do the same. What becomes of your faith?
Would that affect the Jesus you claim you believe in and serve?
If it would, Then you have been serving the church system and the church building and the church as in the church as an organisation. You have not been serving Christ.
But if even in the face of changes in a church system your faith is still intact, your Jesus not affected, then you have been a true Christian.
With this understanding, I can walk into any church building where the name of Jesus is called upon in Spirit and in Truth and it is home for me.
And the young man or young woman sitting next to me is my brother and my sister. Because really, our unifying factor, our rallying point is not the church building or the pastor but Christ, The Head of The Church
