THE WXYZ POLITICAL MOVEMENT BY ADAKA BORO (1938-1968): NIGERIA'S FIRST SECESSIONIST

...Boro was just 27 years old when he declared the Niger Delta Republic

Before Chukwuemeka Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra in May 1967, Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro had declared the Niger Delta Republic in February, 1966.

Boro had formed the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, an armed militia group with members consisting of mainly his fellow Ijaw ethnic group, declared the Niger Delta Republic in February 23, 1966, and fought the Nigeria's Federal Forces for 12 days but they were eventually defeated and then jailed by the Aguiyi-Ironsi led Federal Military Government for treason.

Before he declared the Niger Delta Republic, Isaac Adaka Boro's father, an educationist, had offered his son sponsorship abroad to further his education rather than take up arms against the government. The Senior Boro feared that would ruin the family, but the young Boro said to have rejected the offer.

However, Boro went on to fight for Nigeria against the Biafra during the Civil War but was killed under a mysterious circumstances in active service on May 9, 1968, at Ogu, near Okirika, in Rivers State. He was 29.

THE MAN ISAAC JASPA ADAKA BORO

Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro was born on September 10, 1938, to Ijaw parents in Oloibiri, Bayelsa state. Ironically, this is where crude oil was first discovered in 1956. The mega dollar which then came with the discovery were not impacted on the area where the crude oil was coming from.

His father, Pepple Boro, was a school headmaster in his autobiography; "The 12 Days Revolution" Isaac Adaka Boro described how he moved with his parents to different towns whenever his father was transfered to head a school.

The young Boro did not find any difficulty in obtaining the First School Leaving Certificate which examination he passed with distinction. He also passed the West African School Certificate Examination at Hussey College in Warri, in 1957. He reportedly produced the best school certificate result for the College in that year.

After completing his Secondary education in Warri, Delta state, he took up teaching job before he joined the Police. In 1961, he obtained a scholarship from the Eastern Regional Government to study Chemistry at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Isaac Adaka Boro later emerged as the President of the Students' Union Government for the 1964/1965 session after two failed attempts. This was his first major role in leadership post that made him very popular.

He was so radical and courageous that as a student, he dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria to court seeking the nullification of the 1964 general elections. He was also the pioneer for the campus transportation which was hitherto nonexistent in the University. The young Boro paid attention to the unending Political crisis in Nigeria and spent more time reading the thoughts of known Revolutionaries like Fidel Castro.

When he left UNN in 1965, he moved to Lagos and founded a Political movement called WXYZ with two like minds Samuel Owonaru and Nottingham Dick. The movement advocated greater control of the benefits of oil wealth for the Ijaws.

Boro who said to have strong admiration for for Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Belewa, condemned the coup that led to his assasination and said Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, emergence as Head Of State convinced him that revolution was the only way out for the Ijaw people and advocated a rejection of the new regime.

He questioned the legitimacy of such a violent change and needless show of disrespect to the Nigeria Constitution, describing it as a direct affront on the covenant of true Federalism agreed on by the founding fathers of the country.

Notebly,a few weeks after military coup, Boro declared the secession of the Niger Delta from the rest of Nigeria.

THE 12 DAYS REVOLUTION

On February 23, 1966, a few weeks after the January 1966 military coup, at the age of 27, Isaac Adaka Boro declared the secession of the Niger Delta from the rest of the country. He called the new country "Niger Delta Republic", but it would only last for 12 days.

He firmed the "Niger Delta Volunteer Force" made up of young men whom he had been training in a militia camp behind his father's compound in Kaiama, present day Bayelsa state. In his speech, Boro told his supporters that they are going to demonstrate to the world what and how they felt about oppression.

Interestingly, his career, comfort, young family, and even his own life were nothing compared to the common good and interest which he sought to pursue. Boro and his comrade in arms were determined, resolute and completely sacrificial to their cause. They envisioned aNiger Delta which would be the beacon of true civilization and progress.

Despite the superiority and sophistication of the Nigerian Army, Boro and his close associates including Captain Sam Owonaru, Captain Nottingham Dick, George Amangala, and so on, didn't see a possibility of failure.

Aptly penned down in his autobiography, Boro avowed his commitment to truth and justice. He was sure of victory even after faced with death. His proclamation was the first time the unity of Nigeria would be put to test. Boro argued that the Niger Delta region where the nation's wealth comes from had suffered years of neglect and underdevelopment.

The protest which lasted for 12 days was forcefully restricted by the Federal Government under Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and the Governor of the Eastern Region, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, who ironically, would make the same move by declaring the Republic of Biafra, a year later in May, 1967.

Boro and his comrades were tried for treason and sentenced to death. During his trial, he remarked that there was nothing wrong with Nigeria but lack of mercy in her activities. However, the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon who succeeded the murdered Ironsi in the July Northern counter coup against the Eastern earlier coup against Tafawa Belewa and other Northerners granted Boro Amnesty on the Eve of the Nigerian Civil War in May, 1967. He was then enlisted into the Nigerian Army and was commisioned as a Major.

FIGHTING IN THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR

Boro recruited some men who then volunteered to serve under him and he briefly trained them at escravos. His group was then attached to the 3rd Marine Commando Division (then 3rd marine) under the command of Colonel Benjamin Adekule. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his book "My Watch" describes the training of Boro's 1,000 rivers men as "hurriedly and poorly done with little or nothing in the way of training facilities and resources."

Be however acknowledged their contributions to the army despite the poor training. Major Boro and his men recorded a lot of victories during the war. Their Knowledge of the creeks of the Niger Delta, their understanding of the local languages, their ability to leave off the land and their swift, though tactically less accomplished movement accounted for their huge success in areas around Opobo, Obodo, Opolom, Andoni, Oranga and Buguma.

They fought gallantly to liberate the most critical oil and gas belt of Nigeria from the Biafra troops although, Colonel Adekunle received received all the credits or their successes.

ISAAC ADAKA BORO'S DEATH

Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro died during the Nigeria Civil War near Okirika, in 1968. He was 29. A lot of theories came up concerning his death, with some pointing at Colonel Benjamin Adekunle claiming he saw Boro as a threat to his ambition while others point at the Igbos, who felt Boro betrayed them by joining the Nigerian state to fight against the Biafra.

Speaking about this, Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro's younger brother, David Boro, who was still a teenager at the time his brother died, described his brother as one who did not see himself as a soldier. David stated that his elder brother, Isaac Boro was an Aggrieved freedom fighter who wanted quick result and was only in the army to win the war and would leave when that happened.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also wrote in his book that Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro was killed by a fleeing rebel soldiers whom e encountered during a private visit. The suspicions surrounding his death led to a weakening of the soldiers morales and their fortunes bagan to dwindled.

Major Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro was buried at the Ikoyi cemetery in Lagos, but his remains were later exhumed in 2013 and reburied in the Heroes park in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state capital.

BORO'S LEGACY

Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro's re12 days revolution was the first rebellion of many to come against Nigeria state. He's quoted as an inspiration for both violence and nonviolent Niger Delta Activist like Ken Saro Wiwa and others.

Boro's struggle for equity awakened the consciousness of the Ijaw nation like never before, to the deplorable conditions of their communities despite been home to major oil Wells. They can be described as the proverbial "people who were bathing in an ocean but couldn't get water to wash the soap in their eyes."

Evey year in Bayelsa state, May 16th is set aside to celebrate his impact on Ijaw land and his he fought for the Niger Delta region.

Captain Sam Owonaru was Boro's second in command and was the last surviving member of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, speaking before his death on June 16, 2020, Owonaru said that inability to control and manage their resources was the reason for their agitation.

Isaac Jaspa Adaka Boro's revolution may have failed but it opens the doors for others agitating resource control and drew attention to what is happening in the Niger Delta region. But still yet, the region is still far from being the region of her dreams. Cries of marginalization, Political intolerance and rapid degradation of the region have all fallen on deaf ears.

2027: Pitobi, Atiku and President Tinubu

Pitobi is trying to walk his way back to PDP to run for President if Alhaji Abubarkar Atiku, the former Vice President for eight years and a serial runner for President will step aside in 2027.

The question is if he Peter Obi can transfer all the trust or goodwill he had with the Labour Party to PDP if running as PDP will get him enough votes to kick President Tinubu out of the eight years slot for the South.

Pitobi made it clearer to the North and indeed PDP members including Sule Lamido with EFCC track record cases, that he is not ready to be VP to Atiku even if it is just for one term if President Tinubu is defeated in 2027.

The above was the outcome of their meeting during the week unfortunately, Alhaji Atiku did not commit himself to anything, since he too cannot run as VP to Pitobi, he did what most politicians mischievously do, he shook Pitobi's hand with a dry smile on his thin lips he looked at the man whose actions or inactions in 2023 made his ambition since Jos convention of 1993 to be President of Nigeria almost impossible even now or in future.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu and his team are also developing strategies to neutralize Pitobi's ambition to split the eight years of the South Ticket in 2027, the Oracle says President Tinubu and his strategists will assure the North that PDP or Pitobi cannot be trusted unless they want to be out of Aso Rock for twelve years instead of eight.

For second term ambition, unfortunately President Tinubu may selfishly not show interest in the infrastructural development of the South West, his zone neglected by past Presidents. He will not show interest in any restructures to please Afenifere or his SW on regional government, it is even likely or sadly to say President Tinubu will abandon his life ambition for State and City Police he fought for as Governor of Lagos all because of second term ambition. He is not likely to grant Lagos States more local government he dragged the Federal Government under Obasanjo to Court.

More Also, the independent candidate for elective offices in the amended constitution currently on his table may not receive the signature of President Tinubu until the end of his second term in 2031 that is still not assured in 2027.

The above analysis is how selfish and petty the politicians could be, they leave what to be done today for tomorrow because of their interest in winning future elections is more important than what should be done today.

The losers in this ugly game are the people of the South West that had been denied infrastructural development by YarAdua, Jonathan and Buhari hoping their son will understand but a selfish son who thinks SW is only Lagos State alone while all the Federal roads in all the other five SW states are horrible.

What are the questions the people of SW will ask the next President in 2027 if Tinubu doesn't win re-election about the neglected Federal roads in the SW?

And they should be ready to be told they had Obasanjo as President and Ogunleye as Works Minister, under Buhari they had a SW Vice President Osinbajo and for eight years a SW Minister of Works Hon Fashola if those roads in the South West were not important to them to be fixed why should a non SW President fix them?

The above was a similar statement made by President Jonathan to Former President Obasanjo after he left office Obasanjo requested President Jonathan to fix Sango Ota Idiroko Road , Jonathan asked if the road was not important when Obasanjo was President why should it be to his own administration?

If you want to win an election in Nigeria, you can't jump from party to party. Nobody who has done that has ever won an election at the centre in Nigeria from our amalgamation by the British in 1914 to now. Nobody! You can do so at the regional and state level, especially where your region has ethnic homogeneity. But in a pluralistic federation, you are toast if you do that.

Only those who have remained loyal to their parties have ever won elections as Presidents or Prime Ministers in Nigeria. Your party can go into coalition and merger with another party, or it can change its name and your reputation will remain intact. But when you leave your party to join another party, the people also leave you. 

No matter what happens within your party, stay there and resolve the situation. Assert yourself there. Go from battleground to common ground. If you cannot lead your party out of a crisis, you will not be able to convince non-tribal critical thinking voters that you can lead the country out of crisis. 

Tafawa Balewa was a member of the Northern Peoples Congress. He never changed parties. Shagari was a member of the National Party of Nigeria, which was an offshoot of the Northern Peoples Congress. He never changed parties. 

Obasanjo, Yar'adua and Jonathan were members of the Peoples Democratic Party. They never changed parties. 

Buhari was a member of the All Peoples Party, which later changed its name to the All Nigeria Peoples Party. The party eventually split, and Buhari went with the Congress for Progressive Change, which, in 2013, merged with other parties to form the All Progressives Congress. 

Tinubu was a member of the Social Democratic Party, which was dissolved by Abacha in 1993. Following this, he helped found the Alliance for Democracy, which merged with other parties to form the Action Congress of Nigeria in 2006. The ACN merged with other parties to form the APC in 2013. 

Nigerian Politicians should learn from history. The best predictor of the future is the past. Between now and 2027, any politician who leaves his party for another party, except where there is a merger, is just wasting his time and money if he contests for the Presidency.

A country struggling with political stability cannot afford a leader who also struggles with his own mental and political stability.

Sadly, in Nigeria, to leave your party in Presidential politics is to live in pity as a perennial candidate!

FG to flush out workers with fake certificates in public, private organisations

The ministry is determined to take steps to sanitise the system,” he said.

The minister of education, Tahir Mamman, has pledged to flush out persons in public and private organisations working with fake certificates.

Mr Mamman made this known while speaking in Abuja on Friday when he received the report of an inter-ministerial I

Investigative committee on degree certificate milling from the chairman of the committee, Prof. Jubrila Amin.

The minister of education on Jan. 9, inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to examine the veracity of allegations of degrees racketeering within both foreign and local private universities.

The committee was mandated to review the role of any MDAs or its officials in facilitation of the recognition and procurement of fake certificates.

Are The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Demolitions Targeted At a Particular Ethnic Nationality?

We trivialize the demolition of properties for development when we tribalize them. It is sad for some people to say the demolitions to make way for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project are targeted at them. Are they saying others outside their ethnic group who are affected are not important or are subhuman?

Let us not be indifferent to the feelings of others and ultra-sensitive to ours.

And it is regrettable that the wife of Kingsley Moghalu, a former Central Bank Deputy Governor and Presidential candidate, is spreading these conspiracy theories.

When Moghalu was Deputy Governor at the CBN, he and Emir Sanusi Lamido seized several banks from their rightful owners. The vast majority of those whose banks were seized were Southern Nigerians. They were accused of an anti-South agenda. But reasonable people saw reason with them. Today, I wish Mr. Moghalu could also ask those close to him to restrain themselves.

Please fact-check this: When the Third Mainland Bridge was conceptualized by President Shehu Shagari, over 500 homes were marked for demolition. For the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge, 800 homes are to be demolished.

It is a standard procedure all over the world. Please research it. In 2018, 2000 homes were destroyed in Kibera, Kenya, to make way for a highway. In the US, hundreds of homes are destroyed yearly to make way for urban renewal.

As long as you compensate those with legal titles, this is entirely procedural and quotidian. Stop making it about ethnicity.

To now make it about hatred for a particular ethnic nationality, when other ethnicities were more affected, does Nigeria no good.

And for prominent Nigerians from that ethnicity to spread messages on social media and on WhatsApp fora asking people not to invest in Lagos is to show double standards, because this is a federal project, not a Lagos State Government project. And both Lagos and the Federal Government are known for paying compensation when they demolish, unlike other states.

The Minister of Works has announced that just today only, almost ₦3 billion has been paid in compensation.

And finally, it is IMPOSSIBLE for any individual, business, or entity to own beaches by Nigerian law.

Please fact-check me: Not a single person now accusing the Federal Government of being against a particular ethnicity as they demolish structures in the Right of Way of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project said anything when 250 properties were demolished by the Federal Government in Asaba, Delta State, to make way for the Second Niger Bridge project.

Some prominent personalities celebrated that incident.

So, why are they now attacking the Lagos State Government today? And funny enough, it is the same Federal Government, not the Lagos State Government, that is demolishing properties to make way for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

*President Tinubu Pledges to consider national living wage over minimum wage.*

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the Organised Labour that their understanding, patience, commitment, and support in the course of implementing his administration's policies and programs are not taken for granted.

He applauded the Nigerian workers for their contributions to ongoing efforts by the government to save the nation's economy, describing them as "an indispensable component of the nation’s engine," in the bid to build a just and progressive society.

The President who gave the assurance on Wednesday during a colorful ceremony to mark the 2024 May Day celebration at the Eagle Square, Abuja, said it is a fundamental truth that the workers are Nigeria's backbone, even as he acknowledged and appreciated their hard work, sacrifices, and contributions to the nation's stability and prosperity.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima who represented him at the event, President Tinubu commended the choice of the theme for this year’s May Day celebration, "People First," saying it did not only resonate with his administration’s agenda but also demonstrates that "the working class holds a central position in the affairs of this nation."

Delivering the President's address titled, "Solidarity in Action: Collaborative Governance, Empowered Workers", VP Shettima stated: "Great Nigerian workers, your role as an indispensable component of the nation’s engine cannot be overstated by any government if the quest for a just and progressive society is to be realized. Therefore, I extend my most heartfelt congratulations to you on this very important celebration.

"I do not take for granted the understanding, patience, commitment, and support you have shown throughout the implementation of this government’s policies and programs aimed at positively transforming our great nation. Your contributions have played a significant role in our efforts to rescue the economy since we came on board".

The 2024 Workers Day was marked with high hopes, as President Tinubu told the workers that their days of worrying were over, just as he hinted at his administration’s readiness to consider a national living wage that will address their living conditions, instead of a minimum wage, if suggested by the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage set up on January 30, 2024, by the federal government.

He said, "The committee's mandate was to provide counsel and suggest a national minimum wage that aligns with our current economic conditions. Since then, the committee, in collaboration with labor leaders, has been diligently working towards proposing a new National Minimum Wage.

"Unfortunately, despite concerted efforts, the committee was unable to reach a consensus at its last meeting. This shall be resolved soon and I assure you that your days of worrying are over. Indeed, this government is open to the committee’s suggestion of not just a minimum wage but a living wage."

Noting that he assumed office at a time when Nigeria, like many other nations, was grappling with what he described as “daunting socio-political and developmental challenges”, President Tinubu maintained that his government has been "resolute in confronting these obstacles head-on.

"The scourge of criminality, from banditry to kidnapping and the farmer-herder crises, alongside terrorism, continues to afflict our nation despite the tireless efforts of our armed forces. We are aware of the toll this takes on our economy. I assure you: we are fully committed to tackling these security challenges," he added.

The President however observed that it would be impossible to "achieve a just and equitable society that caters to the needs of every member, including the strong and the weak, without fostering peace and unity."

A little Drama in Kaduna.
During the just concluded 2-Day Summit on "Rethinking the Security and Development Agenda for Northern Nigeria" organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation, a mild drama occurred during one of the technical sessions chaired by the former governor of Adamawa State, HE, Murtala Nyako.
After beautiful presentations and contributions by the discussants, it was time to take contributions from the members of the audience.
The microphone got to the hand of one Rtd Brigd Gen. Galadanci. Without mincing words he declared; "we are here deceiving ourselves. We Northerners like to lie to ourselves. All the beautiful papers presented and applauded woefully failed to address the real issues. Yet we all clapped for them. Let me ask; where is the the Chairman of BoT of this Foundation? Don't tell me, he is in jail for stealing money of his people while he reigned as their governor. Even on this high table (points at the high table), there are people who have stolen the futures of their people yet, we are all here lying to ourselves! Our leaders in Northern Nigeria are thieves! They compete in out- stealing each other at any given chance. We must not continue to hide them...." His voice got lost in a thunderous applause.
When the mic returned to the high table, the chairman of the session didn't find the bold outburst of Gen. Galadanci funny at all and he didn't waste words in addressing the matter. He started by saying "Let me tell you...where is the young man who spoke?" (Galadanci was still receiving handshakes and exchanging contacts with those who felt impressed by his boldness). Sure he's gotten Galadanci's attention, Governor Nyako continued... "Let me tell you, don't believe everything you read in the papers. Wallahi Tallahi, I do not have any Kobo anywhere outside Nigeria. I do not own a square meter of land anywhere outside Nigeria. The total money that came to Adamawa at that time was about 45Billion Naira. But they wrote in the papers that I stole over 150Billion Naira. How is that possible? How can one person steal more than what the state earned?" Galadanci made to say something but the former governor was louder on the speakers as he repeatedly say(with his hand pointing towards Galadanci) "A sailor is talking to you! A sailor is talking to you!! A sailor is talking to you..." until the entire hall went agog with laughter and applause.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, BoT of SABMF Gen. Galadanci said was in prison is Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger State.
It was on the day the embattled governor made his first appearance in court in Minna that this drama happened in Kaduna. Talba was billed to give a speech that day during the opening ceremonies but his message had to be delivered by the secretary of the board, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor, Kano State and former Minister for Education.

(2) Offering credit guarantees and wholesale lending to financial institutions dedicated to broadening consumer credit access today.

(3) Promoting responsible consumer credit as a pathway to an improved quality of life, fostering a cultural shift towards growth and financial responsibility.

In line with the President's directive to expand consumer credit access to Nigerians, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) has launched a portal for Nigerians to express interest in receiving consumer credit.

This initiative, in collaboration with financial institutions and cooperatives nationwide, aims to broaden consumer credit availability.

Working Nigerians interested in receiving consumer credit can visit credicorp.ng to express interest. The deadline is May 15, 2024.

The scheme will be rolled out in phases, starting with members of the civil service and cascading to members of the public.

*Man Viciously Beat Wife Removes Her Four Teeth Over DNA Text Results Showing That Their 3-Children Is Not From Him*

A Nigerian man from Edo State, Benin, who lives in Ekewan trade fair ogbebuay merciless beat his wife over infidelity leading to the woman loosing four teeth.
*According to report sighted by our news media on Wed - Feb 19 2024 the man was arranging to relocate his family from Benin to Canada. Hence, the Embassy requested DNA. The trouble started when the result of the test was said to have revealed that all the three (3) children his wife claimed to have born for him are not his biological children*

Therefore, the man returned to demand explanation from his wife; as she couldn't quickly say anything convincing to the man, he pounced on her and beat her black and blue.
And the friends of the wife started circulating the battered pictures of the woman on social media with the caption, "See how a man beat his wife and removed her 4 teeth!" *But they didn't include the reason for the beating*

TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 2024

Dear Residents of the Federal Capital Territory,

1. As we bid farewell to the holy month of Ramadan, on behalf of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, I extend my warmest greetings to you on the occasion of Eid el-Fitr.



2. I also most heartily congratulate the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of this religious obligation and pray that the supplications made to Almighty Allah will be answered.



3. This auspicious festival not only marks the end of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection, it also serves as a profound reminder of the values of compassion, generosity, and unity that lie at the heart of Islam.



4. During Ramadan, we witnessed the spirit of self-discipline, compassion, and unity that defines this sacred month. It is a time when we come together in solidarity, sharing meals, breaking fasts, and supporting one another in acts of charity and kindness.



5. I urge us, however, not to limit these acts of charity, love, and tolerance to only the holy month but should inculcate this culture into our everyday lives.



6. The end of Ramadan should also not signal an end to our prayers. I hereby enjoin us all to continue to offer supplications to the Almighty for our dear country Nigeria and her leaders for divine wisdom and guidance, especially as they work ceaselessly to overcome our current challenges.



7. Fellow residents of the FCT, this spirit of unity and togetherness that characterizes the nation’s capital is not only integral to the observance of Ramadan but also resonates deeply with the values of harmony and cohesion that the Federal Capital Territory stands for.
