In a disturbing turn of events, the Federal Government of Nigeria has come under intense criticism for failing to fulfill its promise of paying the ₦140,000 wage award arrears to federal workers—a promise many civil servants had clung to as a lifeline amid rising economic hardship.

The Federal Workers Forum (FWF), one of the vocal platforms championing the cause of civil servants, has condemned what it describes as "a dangerous and authoritarian misuse of security forces to suppress lawful agitation." According to the Forum, those arrested were peacefully mobilizing workers and demanding transparency and fairness from the government—not committing any crime.

"This government has not only failed in its responsibilities but is now criminalizing those who dare to ask for justice," one union leader said under condition of anonymity. "Instead of paying the agreed ₦140k arrears, they’re sending armed men after us. This is not democracy—it’s intimidation."

The arrests have sparked outrage among labour unions, human rights advocates, and members of the public, with many accusing the government of attempting to silencing the voice of the armless workers.

*Nigerian Banks Resume International Transactions on Naira Cards After 3-Year Ban*


Three Nigerian commercial banks have reinstated international transactions on their naira-denominated debit cards, marking a return to cross-border card usage after a suspension that lasted nearly three years.

The pause, which began between mid-2022 and early 2023, had seen several financial institutions—including Standard Chartered, First Bank of Nigeria (FBN), Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), and Zenith Bank—halt foreign transactions on their naira Visa and Mastercard offerings. Fintech firms such as Flutterwave and Eversend also pulled back on international functionality, disabling their virtual cards for global payments.

Now, in a series of recent customer communications, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, and Wema Bank have all confirmed the return of international transaction capability on their naira cards.

UBA, in a notice to its customers, linked the decision to its commitment to improving user experience.

“In line with our continued commitment to providing you with seamless and enhanced banking experiences, we are pleased to inform you that all UBA Premium Naira Cards, including Gold, Platinum, and World variants are now enabled for international transactions,” the statement reads.

“This means you can now use your Premium Naira Card for everyday payments, online shopping, POS, and ATM transactions across the world, with more ease and flexibility.

“If you haven’t used your card recently, now’s a great time to rediscover the convenience and prestige that comes with being a UBA premium cardholder.”

Also announcing the development in a recent statement, Wema Bank said customers can now “pay in dollars” with their naira cards.

“Your Wema Naira Mastercard just went global! Now you can pay in dollars on all your favourite international platforms; Amazon, eBay, AliExpress? Netflix, Spotify, YouTube,” the bank said.

Confirming the update, Personal Assistant to the former President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, tweeted: “So, finally, Nigerian banks have now resumed international transactions on Naira cards. I received an email from @GTBank this afternoon confirming the development, stating that customers now have a quarterly limit of $4,000 on their Naira cards for international payments.”

Let’s get this straight.

A lot of people confuse these terms.
Some even think they all mean the same thing.

They don’t.

When you stand as a Guarantor, you are giving the lender a promise that you will pay if the borrower fails to pay after all steps have been taken to recover the debt from the borrower first.

The borrower must first default.

The lender must first exhaust all means to get the borrower to pay.

Only then can they come for you as the guarantor.

But when you stand as a Surety, it’s more serious.

A surety is like saying, “If this person doesn’t pay on the due date, come straight to me. No need to chase them first.”

In other words, as a surety, you’re equally and immediately liable once there’s default.

Now, let’s talk about Referees.

Some people think being a GUARANTOR is the same thing as being a REFEREE.
It’s not.

A Referee is simply someone who confirms that the person applying for a job, loan, or apartment is known to them and has good character.
That’s all.

A REFEREE is not taking on any financial responsibility. A referee is not liable to pay any debt.They are just vouching for the person’s behaviour, not their ability to repay loans.

So next time you’re asked to be a guarantor, surety, or referee understand exactly what you’re signing up for.

One carries serious financial risk.

One comes with immediate liability.

Police Inspector reportedly uses colleague’s riffle commits suicide

A police inspector on special assignment in Niger State has reportedly died by suicide in the early hours of Wednesday in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area.

The officer, identified as Inspector Bassey Asuquo of the 28 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Umuahia, Abia State, was deployed to the area for a special operation.

According to a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X, Asuquo had been displaying signs of unusual behavior prior to the incident.

In response, his Unit Commander had directed that his rifle be withdrawn and kept in the Sarkin-Pawa Police Division’s armoury as a precaution.

Despite this, the inspector reportedly gained access to another officer’s rifle while the officer was asleep and used it to take his own life around 1:50 a.m.

His body has been deposited at the General Hospital in Sarkin-Pawa.

Prof. Nasir Hassan-Wagini of Biology Department, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, who produces and sells vegetables, has advised students and youths to key into small businesses rather than wait for white-collar jobs.

Hassan-Wagini gave the advice on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at a weekly market in Batsari, Katsina state, where he sells the produce.

The professor said he was born by a farmer, grew up as a farmer, and went into produce businesses at an early stage of life.

He said that his story became popular after he was promoted to the rank of professor.

“My call to the NCE, Diploma and degree graduates is that they should feel free and start small businesses in their communities instead of staying idle.

I’m a professor of plant resources at UMYU, I want youths and students to look at me, know my rank and position, and I still engage in small business of this nature.

“That may clear their minds because they feel shame and too big to go into such type of small businesses.

What matters is what you are contributing to the society. So, stop staying at home doing nothing when you did not get job, start with small businesses like this one.

“Our youths should stop going to other places looking for job, they should get into farming and other small businesses to become self-reliant.

Self-reliance is key to successful life. Try to merge your education with vocational skills for your own good,” he said.

One of his neighbours in the market, Malam Uzairu, said that they enjoy staying with the professor in the market.

He described the professor as trustworthy, humble and kind in his interaction with people.

“We respect him and he respect us. In fact, he is a nice person who knows how to relate with all categories of people,” he said.

NAN reports that the price of a 100 kg bag of onion in the market cost N65,000 and above depending on its quality.

A 100 kg bag of dried red pepper sells at N115,000 and above, 100 kg bag of dried tomatoes, N60,000 and above, while 50 kg bag of fresh hot pepper, N100,000 and above.

NAN was told that in the next few months, farmers would start harvesting fresh tomatoes, red pepper, onions, among others.

NAN also reports that security in the area has improved, and has allowed for business activities to thrive.(NAN)

THE OCASSION OF A CONDOLENCE VISIT BY MR. PRESIDENT, H.E.
SEN. BOLA AHMED TINUBU, GCFR TO BENUE STATE ON WEDNESDAY,
18TH JUNE 2025.

The Alago Ikweyi Gbayi Development Union (AIGDU) Abuja, as a corporate and responsible socio-cultural organisation that seeks the Development, Sustainable Peace
and Progress of the Alago land in Nasarawa State and beyond, wishes to sympathise with the people of Nasarawa State and Benue State, over the recent unfortunate deadly
attacks on the inhabitants of Yelwata near the Nasarawa-Benue boarder corridor, during which several lives were lost. We deeply commiserate with families of the deceased,
associates and other Nigerians that were caught in the sad incidence. In this regard, we wish to commiserate with Mr. President and sincerely appreciate his intervention and
the subsequent condolence visit to assess the agony of our communities. We pray that God will give us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses, and establish stability and peace in the areas.

However, our attention has been drawn to the social media video of the remarks by His Royal Majesty, the Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse at the event, in which he made some
claims that are frivolous and quite untrue.
To put the record straight and correct the misrepresentations, the AIGDU finds it pertinent to highlight the untrue claims and state the obvious truth for posterity as
follows:

1. He claimed that Yelwata is in Guma LGA of Benue State:
The fact is that, although it is currently majorly inhabited by Tiv people, Yelwata is historically an Alago (Alagon Omere) village within which there are Alago and
Gwandara tribes. The Tiv tribe later joined them, among others. Thus, the area is part and portion of Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Apart from colonial and other modern-day records, recent Google map also confirms that Yelwata is in Nasarawa State as originally demarcated.

While this claim is not controvertible, our position is not in support of crises and killings in our land that had peacefully welcomed all Nigerians and foreigners alike to settle peacefully and together with our people, and pursue their daily quests for livelihood in harmony. Therefore, claims and counter claims on the remote and immediate causes of all these skirmishes are unknown to us, hence, left for the authorities to decipher and find a fair and lasting solution to it.

2. On the Tor Tiv’s claim that the Tiv people were dispossessed of their ANCESTRAL LANDS in Keana, Obi, and Awe LGAs of Nasarawa State, we assert the age-old maxim that he who seeks equity must come with clean hands.
The fact is that the Tiv people do not have any ancestral land in Keana, Obi, and Awe. The Alago founders of Keana and Obi are the ancestors and owners of the lands, while their descendants are the inheritors and claimants of the ancestral titleship.
The same may be said of areas in Awe Local Government Area.
Historically, and for the avoidance of doubts, Keana was established in 1232 AD and had its territory stretched up to the North Bank of Makurdi. It was the colonial
administration that reduced Keana territory down to in-between Daudu and Yelwata.
The Tiv, by their own claims, confirmed to have met the Jukun, Alago, and Mighili, among others, as already existing founders and owners of the area. Ref. Terngu S.N

The Tiv people were only brought as artisanal workers into Keana from Abinsi area (in the present day Benue State) by the 25th Osana of Keana, HRH, Osana Eladoga
Onyatikpo, who ruled from 1852 to 1862. His progeny is in the present day Keana.
After the first arrivals of the Tiv people to Keana, other sets of the Tiv people subsequently crossed the river Benue and continued to join their Kinfolks and spread to other communities in the present day Nasarawa State for greener pastures.Hence, the ancestral land of Tiv people remains in the localities that their ancestors founded in the present day Benue State.

At this point, we would like to call on Mr. President to expeditiously direct the National Boundary Commission to carry out the physical demarcation of the already delineated Boundary between Nasarawa State and Benue State, based on the extant boundary
instruments, so that the authorities and inhabitants of the two states will clearly know the specific points and extent of their respective jurisdictions for administrative,
political, economic and allied roles in order to avert further infringement of the peace, security and safety of all the people in the area and the nation at large.
