But you think it is ok for Dangote to build a Refinery solving all our collective petroleum imports problems, and then, allow PENGASSAN to dictate to him and shut down his Refinery whenever they feel like.

I think any Refinery worker that is not happy at Dangote Refinery and needs the Union to help him, should seek employment somewhere else, or take Dangote to court.

New Law: Nigerians Must Obtain Tax ID to Operate Bank Accounts, Businesses by 2026

Beginning January 1, 2026, Nigerians will no longer be able to open or operate bank accounts, run businesses, or access financial services without a Taxpayer Identification Number (Tax ID or TIN).

This landmark reform, contained in the newly signed Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, is being described as the most significant change in Nigeria’s financial and tax system in decades.

WHAT THE LAW SAYS

Signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August, the Act makes it compulsory for:

Individuals: No bank account can be opened or operated without a Tax ID.

Businesses: From roadside traders to multinationals, all must register for a Tax ID.

Government Agencies (MDAs): Required to obtain Tax IDs before entering contracts.

Foreign Suppliers: Must register with the new Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) before doing business in Nigeria.

👉 Under Section 8(2) of the Act, banks, insurers, and stockbrokers will be barred from providing services to anyone without a valid Tax ID.

WHY THE REFORM MATTERS

Nigeria has long struggled with weak tax compliance:

Nigeria – 10% tax-to-GDP ratio

Ghana – 13%

Kenya – 16%

South Africa – 27%+

Global Average – 34%

Out of 200 million+ citizens, only 10 million are registered taxpayers, while more than 60 million Nigerians hold bank accounts.

This gap explains why revenue remains poor despite Nigeria’s economic size. Past reforms like the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and the National Identification Number (NIN) improved identity management. Now, the Tax ID mandate is seen as the next bold step to widen the tax net and cut reliance on oil.

The Act also abolishes the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), replacing it with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) — a major institutional shake-up.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CITIZENS & BUSINESSES

Bank Customers: No deposits, withdrawals, or transfers without a Tax ID.

Small Businesses: Informal traders must register, creating new compliance obligations.

Corporate Nigeria: Stricter oversight will reduce tax loopholes.

Foreign Firms: Non-resident suppliers must comply before doing business in Nigeria.

PUBLIC REACTIONS

A civil servant in Abuja expressed concern:

The Imperative of Unity: Why Idoma Elites and Political Leaders Must Put Aside Differences.

As I sit to pen this article, my heart is filled with a mix of emotions - sadness, frustration, and hope. The Idoma people, like many other minority tribes across the globe, have been subjected to marginalization, oppression, and neglect for far too long. We've been crying out for freedom, for equality, and for justice. But the question remains: can we truly achieve these ideals without putting aside our individual differences, political affiliations, and regional loyalties?

The answer, in my humble opinion, is a resounding *NO.* Unless we unite and keep our differences outside, we'll continue to be ruled and ridden by others, both major and minor tribes, who prioritize their personal interests over the collective good of our people. The story of many minority tribes across the globe is a testament to this harsh reality.

From the Native Americans in the United States to the Aboriginals in Australia, and from the Dalits in India to the Kurds in the Middle East, minority groups have struggled for centuries to assert their rights and freedoms. But one thing is common among these groups: their struggles are often exacerbated by internal divisions and lack of unity.

The Idoma people are no exception. We've got talented elites and political leaders who are passionate about the development and progress of our land. However, our individual differences and political affiliations often blind us to the bigger picture. We prioritize our personal interests over the collective good, and this has hindered our progress and development.

But why must we put aside our differences? The answer is simple: freedom can only be actualized in terms of marginalization if we accept ourselves as one and think as one. When we unite, we become a formidable force that cannot be ignored. We can pool our resources, expertise, and experiences to tackle the monumental issues that affect our people. We can empower our communities, promote our culture, and develop our economy.

On the other hand, when we're divided, we're easy prey for exploitation and manipulation. Our differences become a wedge that others can use to drive us further apart. We're unable to present a united front, and our voices are drowned out by the more powerful and influential.

So, what can we do? First, we must recognize that our individual differences are not as important as our collective good. We must put aside our political affiliations and regional loyalties and work together as a team. We must prioritize human empowerment and monumental issues that need attention, rather than condemning each other for our differences.

Second, we must learn from the successes and failures of other minority tribes across the globe. We can learn from their experiences, adapt their strategies, and innovate new solutions to our problems. We can build alliances and partnerships with other groups who share our values and goals.

Finally, we must hold our leaders accountable. We must demand that they prioritize the collective good over their personal interests. We must support leaders who are committed to our development and progress, and we must reject those who seek to divide us for their own gain.

In conclusion, the need for unity among Idoma elites and political leaders cannot be overstated. We must put aside our differences and work together as a team if we hope to achieve freedom, equality, and justice for our people. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our communities to get it right this time. Let us unite, let us empower ourselves, and let us build a brighter future for the Idoma people.

As I end this article, I ask: what will be the legacy we leave for future generations? Will we be remembered as a people who were divided and powerless, or will we be remembered as a people who united and rose to the challenge? The choice is ours, and the time to act is now.

According to a report by Vanguard News on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, has suggested that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, may be reinstated on September 18, signaling an end to the state of emergency declared in the oil-rich state.

Wike disclosed this shortly after casting his ballot at about 11:00 a.m. in Unit 007, Ward 9, Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, during the Local Government elections organized by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The elections, which were held across 319 wards and 23 local government areas, were overshadowed by widespread reports of irregularities and low voter participation. In several urban centres, polling stations recorded very poor turnout, with many residents choosing to stay away from the process. Conversely, some rural communities witnessed relatively better participation.

Observers noted logistical challenges, including the late arrival of electoral materials and allegations that original result sheets were missing in some polling units. Critics also faulted the conduct of the polls without the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), raising questions about the credibility of the exercise.

Despite these challenges, Wike maintained that the political crisis rocking the state was gradually being resolved and that the way was now clear for stability to return. He expressed optimism that by September 18, the suspended governor would be reinstated and governance would return to normalcy.

Political analysts, however, warn that the deep-seated divisions within the state’s political structure may continue to pose challenges, even after Fubara’s reinstatement. The outcome of the local government polls and the broader handling of the Rivers political crisis are expected to play a significant role in shaping the state’s trajectory ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Soldier shot dead by police inspector in Bauchi over illegal mining truck

A soldier of the Nigerian Army has been shot dead by a mobile police inspector while intercepting a truck suspected to be conveying solid minerals from an illegal mining site in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Zagazola Makama learnt that the incident occurred on Aug. 25 at about 7:50 p.m. when troops of 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, stopped a truck with registration number Gombe 676 BLG at a checkpoint in Futuk village.

The truck driver was said to have refused to halt at the checkpoint, forcing the Guard Commander, Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Ali Haruna, to pursue the vehicle with his men on motorbikes until they intercepted it.

However, on halting the truck, a mobile police officer identified as Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim allegedly disembarked and opened fire on the Guard Commander, hitting him in the stomach.

The soldiers immediately overpowered the policeman and disarmed him, while the injured officer was rushed to the Gombe Specialist Hospital for urgent medical treatment. He later died from the gunshot wound.

Sources further disclosed that the truck driver escaped from the scene in the chaos that followed the shooting.

Preliminary findings revealed that the truck was conveying solid minerals suspected to have been extracted illegally from Yalo community, also in Alkaleri LGA. The police inspector was believed to have been on illegal escort duty for the truck.

“The reasons behind the refusal of the vehicle to stop at the checkpoint, the decision of a trained police officer to open fire on soldiers after interception, and the escape of the driver remain highly suspicious.
