Well I'm not surprised they're already doing an about-face on this matter, given the alarming escalation in positive results in the past few days. It just goes to show that the chickens of poor management of the crisis, coupled with our rank mediocre healthcare system & other long-running systemic failures in this our dysfunctional country, are finally coming home to roost. We're talking about reopening airports for domestic operations when interstate travel by road is still prohibited (and we're having a hard time enforcing it)?! As for international travel, I have only two words to say about that: FORGET IT! Tell me, what foreign airline will agree to resume flight operations into this country when they see & analyze the figures coming out from the NCDC ? More than 10% of the total positive tests since March have occurred in the last four days - FOUR DAYS! And we seem to be just hoping that the disease will just go away like a bout of malaria, or waiting for a more proactive country to come up with a vaccine {sorry, the Madagascar 'cure' doesn't count). Whatever the case, we'd better start doing the thing we do most: PRAY!!

My dear, I'm just as horrified as you are, but let's not jump to any conclusions here as to how that poor baby died - some critical thinking is needed here. Sure, the mother could have abandoned it - but it could also be the work of kidnappers or ritual killers.

The sad thing is, the exact cause of death, the motive for this crime, the culprits & even the parents of the baby - all these will most probably never be found, because there's neither DNA records nor any culture of forensic investigation in this country; but then, that's what you get in a non-progressive, education-averse country like ours.

The man bought thousands at N100 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their efforts. He further announced that he would now buy at N200. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to N250 but the supply of monkeys became so little that it took much effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch one.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at N500! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, his assistant told the villagers: ”Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that my OGA has bought from you, I will sell them to you at N350 and when my OGA returns from the city, you can sell it to him at N500”.

The villagers squeezed out all their HARD EARNED savings and bought all the monkeys. The most greedy ones among them even sold their lands to purchase many MONKEYS, hoping to make a huge profit without labor.

Then…

They never saw the man or his assistant. Only monkeys everywhere!

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) practically emptied its vaults apparently to finance the presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sources conversant with investigations into security spending in the last administration have informed TheCable.

TheCable had earlier reported the extra-budgetary disbursement of N40 billion to the office of the national security adviser and N20 billion to the Department of State Services (DSS) by the CBN, but fresh revelations indicate that the monies were released in dollar cash — contrary to all money laundering regulations. They were taken directly from the dollar reserve vaults of the central bank, TheCable understands.

Security sources disclosed that in August 2014, Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, called a board meeting and asked for an approval of N60 billion to support the security services under a “special security intervention fund” he intended to create. Emefiele, who is also chairman of the board, told the members that the money was needed to equip the military to fight the insurgency in the north-east following a series of onslaughts by Boko Haram.

Some board members reportedly cautioned him against such an audacious move, advising instead that the expenditure should be tied to procurement, but he was said to have rejected the advice. This was shortly after he had secured approval from President Goodluck Jonathan to disburse the funds. Sambo Dasuki, retired colonel and then NSA, had twice requested for N60 billion in documents seen by TheCable — and was only successful at third attempt following Jonathan’s intervention.

In the new documents seen by TheCable, the former NSA regularly wrote to Emefiele asking him to disburse the approved money in hard currency equivalent, usually in tranches of N10 billion.

PUBLICITY PAYMENTS

Investigators have now traced some of the monies collected by the office of the NSA to the PDP presidential campaign, with Raymond Dokpesi, chairman of AIT, revealing that he collected N2.1 billion from the office to undertake media publicity for Jonathan.

Dasuki has said not all the monies he received were for security, maintaining that some were for NGOs. However, questions have been raised on how CBN created the security fund overnight to meet NSA’s requests. “What the CBN did was to create an intervention fund, which it is empowered to do by the CBN Act. That is why we have aviation intervention fund, agriculture intervention fund, all sorts, which are now being abused to take money out of the system,” one of the sources said.

A former minister told TheCable that it is illegal for the CBN to pay raw dollars to any government agency. He said: “If the money was given to the NSA in naira, this would be a case of the CBN printing money for the government and adding to pressure on prices and exchange rates. I was told a lot of this happened in many instances and did a lot of damage to the economy.

“If, on the other hand, as it is being alleged in this case, the NSA was given this money in cash forex, then a strong case can be made for criminal activity by the CBN itself. In giving so much cash, the CBN is itself involved in money laundering. And by taking it from the central bank vaults, the management of the central bank has effectively taken foreign exchange from CBN reserves and given same to the NSA with no questions asked.”

The way it was done, according to CBN insiders, “was that the money was taken directly from CBN vaults without any account being credited. It effectively did not go through the due process. The accountant-general did not sign off as it is the practice.

“Money was just moved directly like it happened under Gen. Sani Abacha when large amounts were taken out of the CBN under the guise of financing ECOMOG, the West African peace-keeping force. We know where the bulk ended up.”

FINAL PUSH

Sources further told TheCable that it was common for the CBN to dole out hundreds of millions of dollars in cash to various agencies in government in the run-up to the general election. For instance, in February 2015 — after the presidential elections were controversially postponed ostensibly to fight Boko Haram — the CBN took almost $300 million on the instructions of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) and passed it to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

NAPIMS is a corporate services unit in the exploration and production directorate of the NNPC charged with managing government’s investment in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. NIA is Nigeria’s equivalent of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which deals with foreign intelligence. Investigators are working with the theory that the money was used to finance PDP’s “final push” in the presidential election which it eventually lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“After meeting NAPIMS’ request, the CBN did not have any more dollars in its vaults. Even for estacode, CBN staff had to wait for dollars from the branches,” a CBN source said.

The economy has been on a spiral in the last one year as the fall in oil prices has further worsened the problems caused by the excessive drawing down on dollars in the last one year of Jonathan’s administration. The naira has since been devalued and the forex market is virtually paralysed, with the CBN effectively outlawing the operation of domiciliary accounts and banning forex supply for the import of dozens of items.

Ibrahim Muazu, the CBN director of corporate communications, did not respond to messages.

A CBN official told TheCable: “The central bank does not engage in public controversy.”

I've always known personally that there's nothing wrong with Alcohol, as it's even used as a form of food preservative. However, how you drink it and where you drink it is the main thing. If you drink it with sinners, they'll take you as one of them, and they can never listen to you when you preach Jesus to them. In a nutshell, if you have to sacrifice drinking Alcohol in order to make sinners listen to you with an open heart while you preach, I think it's worth it. As a Christian, we have to live a life that won't make people go a stray. Personally, I don't drink it. But I don't see anything wrong with it either.

And by your same reasoning Peter, who went to Cornelius' house & ate & drank with him, was compromising his testimony(they accused him of doing so too!) - even after God told him by a vision not to call unclean what God had declared clean?

And besides, saying that one shouldn't touch alcohol to avoid drunkenness is just like saying a married person should swear off sex with their spouse so that they won't commit adultery. Or don't you know that there are unbelievers who are moderate drinkers, never going to excess? What good is their self-discipline to the souls of others - or their own souls, for that matter? Sometimes I just marvel at how we Christians just keep majoring on the minors.

I have to say, the op who created this thread is a true student of the Word - someone who has taken time to find out the mind of Christ concerning this unnecessarily controversial topic. It's a thread that has exposed the skewed, unbalanced, unscriptural (even, dare I say, heretical) mindset of most self-acclaimed Christian abstainers.

This issue of alcohol consumption is a real bitter point of misunderstanding in the Church. Because with all the scriptural references he gave on why the drinking of wine is not necessarily sinful, there are still some narrow-minded, sanctimonious holier-than-thous who'll insist otherwise - according to their own misguided, man-made, unscriptural doctrines.

For the record, I will say this as a born-again Christian with a confident, even if imperfect, understanding of Scripture: Anyone in Christendom advocating total abstinence from alcohol as the only right approach for a Christian is doing nothing but preaching HERESY!

To start with: Jesus' miracle at Cana. For anyone to advocate that it was nothing more than non-alcoholic fruit juice shows how deluded they must be to be propagating this error. The Bible made it clear from the statement of the head steward at the wedding - no doubt an experienced wine taster himself - that the wine that Jesus provided was of superior quality to the vintage that had run out. Tell me, could that possibly have been said about 'ordinary fruit juice'? Or are you implying that those of us who believe otherwise are saying that by providing the wine, Jesus was giving His approval to drunkenness? If you really think so, then sorry to sound harsh, but there's more hope for foolish drunkards than there is for you.

Then there's Jesus himself, who describes himself as "the Son of man who came eating and drinking", as opposed to John the Baptist who did neither - surely that's enough evidence to show that he too was a partaker of the fruit of the vine. They called him, the Lamb without blemish, a drunkard & a glutton - would you call him that as well cos he too drank alcohol? Or are you saying that self-discipline in the use of alcohol is impossible, so it's better not to touch the stuff? Like the apostle Paul said in 1 Cor. 6:12, " 'All things are lawful unto me' - but I will not be held under the power of any".

To me, those who are offended by others exercising their God-given right to partake of alcohol & its benefits, are afflicted by a mental malaise; not one of sincere concern for the welfare of their fellow man, but that of self righteousness - the pride that deceives them into thinking their own personal choices apply to everyone, along with the un-Christian hostility towards those who don't agree with them. Those are the same people who called Jesus drunkard & glutton, & doubtless theyll call those of us who adhere to this truth the same words. Well, personally my attitude is, if that's the case with me (& btw I'm also a moderate drinker who knows better than to take alcohol to excess for any reason) then I sure am glad & humbled to be in the company of my Lord.

Well, IMO, I don't see much wrong in that; in fact, I think it's cool from the pastor.

Shows he's in tune with modern trends, & not a typical Christian leader with a closed 'church mind', that he's got some swag & some street credibility. I won't be surprised if he's also popular with the youth in that church - & that can only be a good thing, provided he's mentoring them on the true Word of God.

The only advice I'd give him is that he shouldn't make it a regular habit, otherwise he'll soon be dismissed as a showman.

I see this contraption around every few weeks at Ikeja on my way to work; whenever I see it, I usually have a good chuckle within myself at the 'inventor' & his so called creativity - this in our day & age, & in our country where we can't even manufacture bicycles . I keep wondering why this always seems to make it to the front page.
