Health / Nigerian Surgeon Removes Baby From Womb, Operates On Her Tumor, Returns Her Back by edimalo(m): 11:02am On Oct 26, 2016
www.nairaland.com/attachments/4401399_yink_jpeg162b92e906cd760ebb0386fb5b21580c

CNN)-
Margaret Boemer went for a routine ultrasound 16 weeks into her pregnancy with her third child. She quickly found out that things were far from routine.

"They saw something on the scan, and the doctor came in and told us that there was something seriously wrong with our baby and that she had a sacrococcygeal teratoma," the Plano, Texas, mom said in an interview shared by Texas Children's Hospital. "And it was very shocking and scary, because we didn't know what that long word meant or what diagnosis that would bring."

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a tumor that develops before birth and grows from a baby's coccyx, the tailbone.

"This is the most common tumor we see in a newborn," said Dr. Darrell Cass, co-director of Texas Children's Fetal Center and associate professor of surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College Medicine. "Even though it's the most common we see, it's still pretty rare."

Found more often in girls than boys, this tumor occurs in one out of every 35,000 births.

Unfortunately, this was not the first bad news of Boemer's pregnancy. Originally, she had been pregnant with twins, but lost one of the babies before her second trimester.

It was a shock at 16 weeks to learn of her daughter's rare birth defect.

"Some of these tumors can be very well-tolerated, so the fetus has it and can get born with it and we can take it out after the baby's born," said Cass. "But about half of the time, they cause problems for the fetus and it's usually causing problems because of a blood flow problem."

Cass explained that the tumor is trying to grow by sucking blood flow from the baby, yet the baby is also trying to grow, too "so it becomes a competition."

"And in some instances, the tumor wins and the heart just can't keep up and the heart goes into failure and the baby dies," said Cass.

With a large tumor stealing the blood supply, Boemer's fetus was becoming more ill each day, doctors explained to the expectant mother. Something had to be done.

Although other doctors had advised her to terminate the pregnancy, Cass and his team told her about another possibility: fetal surgery. This option, though, would not be an easy road. Even worse, her baby's chances of survival would be grim.

"LynLee didn't have much of a chance," Boemer said. "At 23 weeks, the tumor was shutting her heart down and causing her to go into cardiac failure, so it was a choice of allowing the tumor to take over her body or giving her a chance at life.

"It was an easy decision for us: We wanted to give her life."

'Kind of a miracle'

She was 23 weeks and 5 days pregnant, when Cass performed the emergency fetal surgery. By this time, the tumor was nearly larger than the fetus.

Cass and Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, his partner surgeon, operated for about five hours.

"The part on the fetus we do very, very quickly," said Cass. "It's only 20 minutes or so on the actual fetus." Most of the time is spent opening the uterus, which he described as "a big muscle lined with membranes."

"We don't want the mom's health to be jeopardized," said Cass, who explained they work carefully, both making the incision and sewing it up in order "to make that uterus be as sealed and as water tight as possible."

Still, Cass said, the tumor in this case was so large a "huge" incision was needed to get to it, so it ended up that the baby was "hanging out in the air... Essentially, the fetus is outside, like completely out, all the amniotic fluid falls out, it's actually fairly dramatic," said Cass.

During the surgery, LynLee's heart slowed down to an incredibly low rate. "It basically stopped," said Cass. He credits the heart specialist, a key member of the team, for giving the right medication and transfusing the right amount of fluid, allowing the surgeons to continue their work.

The surgical team removed the bulk of the tumor. When they finished their operation, the surgeons placed LynLee back inside the womb and sewed her mother's uterus shut.

"It's kind of a miracle you're able to open the uterus like that and seal it all back and the whole thing works," said Cass.

'Worth every pain'

Boemer was on bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy. Despite her pain, she marshaled her strength and made it another 12 weeks to nearly 36 weeks -- full term -- when Lynlee Hope was born for the second time via C-section on June 6.

The little fighter, named for both her grandmothers, weighed 5 pounds and 5 ounces.

Immediately, the hospital staff whisked the newborn away to the neonatal intensive care unit for an evaluation, but after this initial checkup, she was deemed healthy and transferred to the nursery.

There's a risk the fetus could be born immediately after the in utero surgery, or die.

After she was born, LynLee faced one more ordeal: removing the bits of tumor that surgeons could not reach, which had begun to grow again.

"At eight days old, she had more surgery, and they were able to remove the rest of the tumor," explained Boemer.

LynLee recovered in the NICU and weeks later, arrived in her family home.

"Baby Boemer is still an infant but is doing beautiful," said Cass, remarking that she is perfectly healthy. His one previous surgery of this kind was also a success. "I think she's about 7 now, and she sings karaoke to Taylor swift -- she's completely normal," said Cass.

While babies facing surgery undoubtedly struggle, mothers' emotional journeys might be most difficult and dramatic. As Cass describes it, first their obstetrician tells them there's something wrong and then they're told there's nothing that can be done and their babies will die and then a surgeon tells them there's something that can be done. Amazingly, some end with a healthy baby.

"It was very difficult," Boemer said.

But seeing her toddler smiling with her sisters, she added: "It was worth every pain."

Politics / This Oyibo Woman Came To Nigeria To Meet The Young Boy Who Scammed Her Of €1000 by edimalo(m): 12:51pm On Oct 20, 2016

When Maria Grette first discovered that the 58-year-old Danish man with whom she had fallen in love was actually a 24-year-old Nigerian "419" internet scammer, the 62-year-old Swede was distraught. But, soon, her feelings changed.

"The most terrible thing was not that he had cheated me, but that he had lost his innocence," she said.

She became consumed with what she describes as "a profound need to make a difference to the people of Nigeria".

Ms Grette's relationship with Johnny (not his real name) began after an evening of fun and games with her girlfriends, during which they playfully created a profile for her on an online dating website. A few years before, she had gone through a traumatic divorce, and her friends teased her about finally starting a new relationship.

After three months of communicating, the man agreed to come over and visit her in Sweden. But before that, he and his son needed to make a quick trip to Nigeria for a job interview, he said.

Johnny called to let her know that he was at Heathrow Airport. And to say that he had landed in Nigeria. He also got her to speak with Nick. The next phone call was to tell her that he was in a Lagos hospital.

They had been mugged, his son shot in the head, and they were without money and papers.

Unfortunately, his bank did not have a branch in Africa, he added, so it would take time to transfer money from his UK account. Meanwhile, the hospital management was requesting €1000 to proceed with treatment.
"Honey, I am happy to hear from you and I am still at the hospital. The doctor said we where lucky we where not kidnapped. The bank does not have a location in Africa, so it will take time to get money and the management are requesting 1000 euros to proceed with treatment. Nick is all I have got and I will not forgive myself if anything happens to him. I am confused, and I do not know where to turn at the moment......"

"I will never forget how I rushed to the Western Union office, trembling while I did the transfer," Ms Grette said.

"All I could think of was to get the two persons in Nigeria out of danger."

The plot developed after that initial transfer. Medical complications called for more money. The doctors demanded more advance fees.

Several thousands of euro later, in what she describes as "coming to her senses", Maria realised that something was amiss.

She stopped responding to his messages.

Politics / Obanikoro Sings From DSS: I Gave Fayose $5.37m Cash For Ekiti Poll by edimalo(m): 12:28pm On Oct 19, 2016

Obanikoro Sings From DSS: I gave Fayose $5.37m cash for Ekiti poll

DETAINED former Minister of State (Defence) Musiliu Obanikoro has implicated Governor Ayodele Fayose in the probe of the N4.745billion wired to a company by the Office of the National Security Adviser(ONSA).

The cash was wired to Sylva Mcnamara, which has been linked to Obanikoro within seven months in 2014.

Sen. Obanikoro said of the cash, N2.23billion was transferred to Fayose.

He handed Fayose $5,377,000 in cash and N1.3billion was received by the governor’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele.

Obanikoro admitted that the N1.3billion was flown to Akure airport in two chartered flights for delivery to Agbele.

The money was sourced from the $2.1billion meant for arms purchase at the ONSA.

Obanikoro told Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) detectives that he is not the owner of Sylva Mcnamara that was used to transfer the funds to Fayose.

But he defended why the money was remitted to Mcnamara. Part of the reason is the warding off of a plot by Boko Haram to attack Lagos, he claimed.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Mr. James Onoja(SAN), the ex-minister was confronted with a petition from ONSA which was dated November 28, 2015.

The petition is titled “Payment to companies with no contract awards or approval”.

He said having gone through the petition, he discovered that Sylva Mcnamara was No. 78 on the list of firms being investigated, having “collected the aggregate sum of N4,685,000,000 between April 4, 2014 and November 13, 2014.

A source quoted Obanikoro as saying that “N2.2billion was transferred to Sylva Mcnamara for onward transfer to Mr. Ayodele Fayose on the instruction of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

“The sum of N1.3billion cash was brought in a bullion van by Diamond Bank on the instruction of the NSA.

“In addition, the sum of N60million was converted to dollars at the rate of N168 per dollar and altogether the sum of $5,377,000 was handed over in cash by me to Mr. Fayose while the N1.3billion was received by Mr. Fayose’s associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, in the presence of my Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Lt. Adewale, who also accompanied them to the bank along with the bank officials.

“I didn’t interact with the bank officials. I called Fayose before the funds were handed over to Mr. Abiodun Agbele. I spoke to Fayose with my phone at Akure airport.”

Politics / Breaking:Chibok Girls Release: 100 Chibok Girls Unwilling To Leave Boko Haram by edimalo(m): 12:11pm On Oct 19, 2016

Nigeria’s government is negotiating the release of another 83 of the Chibok schoolgirls taken in a mass abduction two-and-a-half years ago, but more than 100 others appear unwilling to leave their Boko Haram Islamic extremist captors, a community leader said Tuesday.

The unwilling girls may have been radicalized by Boko Haram or are ashamed to return home because they were forced to marry extremists and have babies, chairman Pogu Bitrus of the Chibok Development Association told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Bitrus said the 21 Chibok girls freed last week in the first negotiated release between Nigeria’s government and Boko Haram should be educated abroad, because they will probably face stigma in Nigeria.

Some 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped from a school in northeastern Chibok in April 2014. Dozens escaped early on and at least half a dozen have died in captivity, according to the newly freed girls, Bitrus said.

All those who escaped on their own have left Chibok because, even though they were held only a few hours, they were labelled “Boko Haram wives” and taunted, he said. At least 20 of the girls are being educated in the United States.

The 21 released girls and their parents were reunited Sunday and are expected to meet with Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday or Wednesday, Bitrus said. Buhari flew to Germany on an official visit the day of the girls’ release.

Politics / EXCLUSIVE AUDIO ; Aisha Buhari Criticises Nigeria's President Buhari, NO 2019 by edimalo(m): 11:24am On Oct 14, 2016

I won’t campaign for Buhari in 2019 if things continue like this, says wife

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government.

Mrs Buhari said: "The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don't know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years."

In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president "does not know" most of the top officials he has appointed.
She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a "few people" were behind presidential appointments.
Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government.
His wife's decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it reflects the level of discontent with the president's leadership,

She said people who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were now appointed to top posts because of the influence a "few people" wield.
"Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position."
Asked to name those who had hijacked the government, she refused, saying: "You will know them if you watch television."
On whether the president was in charge, she said: "That is left for the people to decide."

Photos: Shi'ite members hold procession in Kaduna despite state government's ban on their activities

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria popularly known as Shi'ites, embarked on their Ashura procession in Kaduna state this morning despite the state government's ban on their activities.
Yesterday, Nigerian troops have surrounded a gathering of Shi’a Muslims in Kaduna, with worshippers trapped inside, days after the state government proscribed the group.

Worshippers gathered to commemorate historical events associated with the Islamic month of Muharram that are particularly significant in the Shia calendar, UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, said in a statement Tuesday.

“Shortly before the Kaduna Markaz mosque on Zango Road was encircled by armoured military vehicles carrying heavily armed soldiers and also an ambulance were among a convoy of 18 military vehicles seen nearby,” the group said.
This comes after 5 people have been reported dead in a clash between Shi'ites group and security agents in Funtua town, Katsina state. According to reports, the clash started when the Islamic group members this morning embarked on Ashura procession marked by Shi'ite worldwide.

The Katsina state police command had previously warned against unlawful processions in the state and attempted to stop them from the one they organized today when the clash started.

Politics / DSS ARRESTS; Wike And Police Role In Aborted Arrest Of Judge In Rivers Exposed by edimalo(m): 1:37pm On Oct 11, 2016

Exclusive details of the role played by the police in Rivers State during the aborted arrest of a judge of the Federal High court in Port Harcourt, in the early hours of Saturday emerged yesterday, after sources disclosed that the Directorate of State Services, DSS, in the state informed the Commissioner of Police about the operation before it started.

It was gathered that the DSS in the state had earlier called to inform the Commissioner of Police, Francis Odesanya, that his men were going to effect the arrest. The police boss reportedly complied accordingly by directing his men to cooperate and give them all necessary support.

According to police sources, it was in the early hours of the morning and nobody would have been expected to open his doors freely to visitors, so, the judge refused to open his doors to DSS officials.

The source said: “The DSS office shares the same fence with that of the judge. If they had wanted to accomplish the arrest successfully without much fuss, there are many options left for them.

‘’They should have either scaled the fence to enter the compound or gone with the necessary instruments for the operation.

‘’The governor arrived there with a retinue of members of his cabinet and members of the House of Assembly. While the DSS operatives were dilly-dallying, the governor and his team started obstructing them.

“When the situation was getting intolerable around 1am, the Commissioner of Police arrived the scene. He spoke with the DSS boss and later went to persuade the governor to allow them do their work advising that if there was any breach, it should follow due process later.

‘’The commissioner of police reportedly insisted that the governor should not obstruct justice. When the governor refused to give way, the police boss ordered his ADC to move away from the scene and he complied.

‘’The DSS attempted to move in but the governor, again without his ADC and other policemen that accompanied him who were obeying the Cp’s order, started obstructing them.”

Politics / HOT: Chief Justic Of Nigeria Berates Buhari In Face-to-face Meeting At Aso Rock by edimalo(m): 11:36am On Oct 11, 2016
This sounds Crazy! No wonder the judges were released unconditionally.

Mahmud Mohammed, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, has confronted President Muhammadu Buhari in a face-to-face meeting in the Presidential Villa following the weekend crackdown on federal judges and two Supreme Court justices by the country’s secret police, The Trent can exclusively report.

The meeting, which held in the morning of Monday, October 10, 2016, was at the instance of the Honourable Justice Mohammed, multiple sources reveal.

Present at the meeting were Lawal Daura, the director-general of the Department of State Security Services, DSS, which serves as the country’s secret police and the president of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Babatunde Adejumo.

Our findings are that the meeting was very tense and the chief justice did not mince words when addressing the president on the matter. The visibly infuriated CJN tongue-lashed the president for violating the democratic principles of separation of powers and assuming the unconstitutional status of “supervisor” of the judiciary, an independent arm of government.

Justice Mohammed accused President Buhari of victimizing the judges targeted in the midnight crackdown by the DSS for refusing to be intimidated by the secret police over the matters of the election petitions of Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.

According to one of our top inside sources, the CJN exposed a series of scare and intimidation tactics carried out by the DSS director general, a kinsman to President Buhari, to make the bench bow to its wishes and overturn the judgement against the current governors of two oil-rich states.

Mohammed expressly accused the DSS DG of using the name of President Buhari in carrying out what he called an “unprecedented attempt to influence the bench and pervert justice” in the country. The president was visibly upset by the revelations and repeatedly denied knowledge of such harassment of of judges by the DSS.

Mr. Daura attempted to deny knowledge of such subterranean moves and claimed that the judges that were arrested, in what the secret police wrongly termed as “sting operation”, were corrupt. A claim which saw the CJN shout him down telling him to shut up and sit down.

After lambasting the secret police boss, Justice Mohammed proceeded to unreel instances in which Daura contacted judges handling the election petition cases claiming that ruling in favour of the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidates was “what President Buhari wanted”. Again, the president denies issuing such instructions.

The CJN also revealed that the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi offered the judges millions of dollars to overturn their ruling on the two election petitions. He said the honourable justices rebuffed Amaechi because they were hellbent on delivering a sound judgment on the cases which had been unduly sensationalised by politicians.

Justice Mohammed revealed that Amaechi also said that he was acting on the orders of the president and that in actual fact, the judges arrested over the weekend were those who refused to be corrupted by the DSS and Amaechi and insisted on preserving the independence and integrity of the bench.

On this revelation, Buhari presented a disturbed contenance, our sources say. The president requested that the CJN puts down his position which we are reliably informed has been done.

Insiders revealed to The Trent that the climate in Aso Rock is unusually tense following the posture and damning revelations by the CJN.

There are whispers in the corridors that based on the gravity of the allegations against the DSS director and Amaechi, Buhari may let go of the duo to “clear his name from the embarrassing episode’, a top security source told our reporter.

Justice Mohammed went on to describe the DSS action as “very saddening”, “deeply regrettable” and a “distressing and unfortunate” incident when he later addressed the valedictory court session held in honour of a retiring Justice of the Supreme Court, Suleiman Galadima. The attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami was conspicuously absent at the event on Monday.

In the early hours of Saturday, October 8, 2016, operatives of the county’s secret police invaded the homes of a number of senior judges and abducted some of them from the homes under the guise of an anti-corruption battle.

“My lords, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen, not to detract from this occasion, it is indeed very saddening and deeply regrettable, the distressing and unfortunate incident which occurred on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8, 2016,” Mohammed said at the valedictory court session held in honour of a retiring Justice of the Supreme Court, Suleiman Galadima

President Buhari appointed Lawal Daura, his kinsman from his hometown in Katsina on July 2, as head of the DSS after firing Ita Ekpeyong. Daura was recalled from retirement as he had retired from the service of the DSS when he reached the mandatory age of 60 according to the Civil Service rules of Nigeria. He is also a member of Buhari’s political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and served on the security committee for Buhari’s presidential campaign.

While the election petitions were being heard at the courts, the INEC resident electoral commissioners (RECs) for Akwa Ibom, Austin Okojie, was detained and tortured for 13 days and his Rivers State counterpart, Gesila Khan , was also detained for two weeks by Nigeria’s secret police. The harassment, detention, and torture of electoral officials of the two oil rich states was reportedly connected with the interest of President Buhari in reclaiming electoral victory from main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in those states.

None of the INEC officials detained by the DSS have been charged with any crime and the election petitions were eventually ruled in favour of the PDP by the Supreme Court.

Politics / Re: Buhari Live In Lagos (pictures) by edimalo(m): 3:43pm On Apr 06, 2011
Justcash:

So, you guys really think this guy can win? Hahahahahahahahaha! All along, I thought you guys were joking. Lemme tell you guys the truth;

1. Ribadu and Shekarau got more chance to defeat GEJ than Buhari
2. The crooks that are in control of power now will never allow a man that is threatening to arrest and jail them all to ever rule.
3. Buhari does not have the capacity to win in the SS, SE, 10% SW and 50% of the whole north.
4. Buhari is honest, but without a visible plan for Nigeria. The last thing we need now is someone that will come and take us back to the 1970s.
5. Buhari will lose alot of votes due to his past religious rants. He is truly not seen as being capable of being fair religiously.

Then, I have a question to ask;

Why is it Buhari that all of you are looking to vote for and not a candidate like Ribadu? If you are talking of change, then Ribadu looks like more of a change than Buhari. My reason is that Ribadu is from another party, and is of the younger generation.

You guys should not get me wrong o. I don't hate Buhari. I am only stating facts. What we need is not someone that will keep shouting "I will jail them," without a visible plan to show what he will do while he is jailing them. I know exactly what Buhari will do if he wins. He will stop every contract, freeze all of Nigeria's accounts, suspend on going plans and start arresting people. Nigeria will stay on a spot until he completes his arrests, and then start afresh to do everything. From square one! Is that what Nigeria needs? Instead of that I prefer Gej to continue with his little strides until better people like Fashola, Amaechi, Lamido etc comes out to contest.

May God mend your hearts that Buhari's loss will break very soon.

Personally, Ribadu's blank. it's obvious. the only thing He keeps saying is dat He's young,50 and from a younger generation not as articulate as a quarter of Shekarau. He has no ideas on rucing government.

I'm beginning to get irritated by GEJ's statements. everywhere He goes it's always stupid statements not practicable in order to win votes.
Someone needs to tell him He's becoming to look like a clown. Imagine Him having interviews with D'Banj.
