hey jac'

i tried working on the stuff again and came up with a solution for one of the questions. i left some comments in the code for you to examine as a part of it did not run as i have expected.

i have tried to attach it with this reply but i can't get it through cos of the .py extension, hope to hear from you soon. i would appreciate if i can get your mobile number, i can always send you a message if i have dropped any question for you. i hope it is ok with you.

here is the code:

#Write a Who's Your Daddy? program that lets the user enter the name of a male and
#produces the name of his father. (You can use celebrities, fictional characters,
#or even historical figures for fun.) Allow the user to add, replace,
#and delete son-father pairs. The program should also allow the user to get a list
#of all sons, or fathers, or son-father pairs.

choice = raw_input('What do you want to do?: ')

WIYF[(replace_name).lower()] = new_dad_name
print'Updated!'
else:

elif choice == '3':

if remove_name in WIYF:
del WIYF[(remove_name).lower()]

else:
print'\nSuch name does not exist here!'

elif choice == '5':

elif choice == '6':
for name in WIYF:
print name

elif chioce == '7':
for name in WIYF:
print WIYF[name.lower()]

raw_input('Press the enter key to exit.')

#i still have problems with when choice == '2' and the name entered is not in WIYF
# the else part does not run, what could be responsible for that?

thanks

@ Seun

i am still waiting for your response Sir.

ProgrammingRe: Python Programming by EDIPO(m): 1:09pm On Feb 10, 2009
hey people.

jacob05, seun, alexis how are you all guys doing?

thanks for your every note posted here. i am getting better with python.

i got the following problems, trust me, i have attempted some and i dont just understand some. i would appreciate if you can help me solutions.

i read all this stuff on my own, please do your bit in my career. here are the problems:

Challenges
1. Create a program that prints a list of words in random order. The program should print all the words and not repeat any.
2. Write a Character Creator program for a role-playing game. The player should be given a pool of 30 points to spend on four attributes: Strength, Health, Wisdom, and Dexterity. The player should be able to spend points from the pool on any attribute and should also be able to take points from an attribute and put them back into the pool.
3. Write a Who's Your Daddy? program that lets the user enter the name of a male and produces the name of his father. (You can use celebrities, fictional characters, or even historical figures for fun.) Allow the user to add, replace, and delete son-father pairs. The program should also allow the user to get a list of all sons, or fathers, or son-father pairs.
4. Improve the Who's Your Daddy program by adding a choice that lets the user enter a name and get back a grandfather. Your program should still only use one dictionary of son-father pairs. Make sure to include several generations in your dictionary so that a match can be found.
5. Create a game where the computer picks a random word and the player has to guess that word. The computer tells the player how many letters are in the word. Then the player gets five chances to ask if a letter is in the word. The computer can only respond with "yes" or "no". Then, the player must guess the word.

i currently use Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner by Michael Dawson. i have the e-copy, but there are some part of it that would require i have a CD that came with the book, if you have the cd or a copy of it, i would like to share with you please.

hope to read from you guys,thanks.

MAY THERE SOULS REST IN PEACE.

@Qoutasystem,

it is an understatement to say i am shocked at your submissions. we are talking of human lives, whether or not they are yorubas' hausaa or igbos. i dont even care of what background they belong. we are concerned about a sick nation being led by sick leaders and all you could do is come out this bold with so much insensitivity!
while i strongly do not agree with the caption, i think questioning what youth corpers are doing out there in Jos suggests that you never served or you did not school properly(no insult meant).

i am yoruba, currently in kano with two of my elder brothers who also work in Kano, if we get killed today, you'd blame us also for working in kano, so where is the place of cultural diversity and acceptance? think about it.

the mayhem is condemnable and most unfortunate. the big men who sponsored this unslaught are in the comforts of their houses enjoying the presence of armed security men.

so many people have died innocently, there is no point therefore making it look as if they were particularly targeted cos they were yoruba corpers.

we would do to ourselves great injustice if we fail to address issues devoid of ethnic chauvinism.

once again, my heart goes to all the families of the deceased.

lets think, talk and act like a people of one nation.

God bless nigeria.
PoliticsRibadu Under Attack by EDIPO(op):
NUHU RIBADU’S GIFT FROM A TROUBLED NATION
Events that welcomed the emergence of President Yar’adua and his subsequent assumption to office vis-à-vis his implementation of the power to hire and fire has no doubt left so many heads dropped in outright disappointment.
It is important to state clear from the scratch that there is not attempt to blow a man’s trumpet beyond his score card. As a matter of fact, my concern is predicated on the creed of an injustice to one, being an injustice to all.
This is one philosophy that in my mind had strengthened the will and limits of comradeship.
From the onset, I’d like to emphasize my bitterness over the attack on Nuhu Ribadu. This does not in any way speak for Ribadu alone as an individual, but for the millions of voiceless Nigerians who are facing worse prosecution in the face of an overblown Respect for the rule of Law agenda of our hide and seek President.
Without need to run through the resume of Ribadu and/or his outstanding and rare display of courage in the execution of his duties while in office, I think it is important to commend the maturity with which he has handled the chains of events so far especially in the areas of utterances. May I also stress that much as I had problems with some of his approaches as the helmsman of the EFCC, I’d score him excellent on the overall rating.
Given the historical challenges of a country governed not only by corrupt leaders but also over-impoverished followership, one would have expected that the anti-corruption crusade of Ribadu would create a strong foundation for a better Nigeria. It seems to me at the moment that the efficacy, luster, zeal, courage and dedication that graced Nuhu’s modus operandi at the EFCC left with him. It therefore makes it look as if EFCC in itself was just a mere parastatal that enjoyed the occupation of a committed statesman.
As a matter of fact, (without intentions to be rude) to have brought in a Waziri after Ribadu was the first insult Ribadu and every other Nigerian who saw hope in the crusade suffered.
You may or not agree with me that President Yar’adua has in recent time shown his penchant for placing square pegs in round holes; one of such goofs was the appointment of Prof. Ajanachukwu as the Minister of Education, a man who could not clearly read Mr. President’s speech at the Convocation Ceremony of the University of Ibadan. So, moves like this would only come to reconfirm the weakness and judgmental flaws of our President.
That Barrack Obama, the President elect of the USA is taking far more critical steps while he has not been sworn in than our own serving president as argued by Chief Gani Fawehinmi is a statement of fact!
The mafia manner with which Ribadu was removed from office despite the warnings and advice of well meaning Nigerians and subsequent treatments meted out on him successfully painted a picture of a country with very little or no regards at all for Hard work and Patriotism. I can now understand the story of the neglect of Chief Taiwo Akinwunmi, who designed the Nigerian Green-White-Green flag.
Besides the fact that a very weak, unwilling and foot-dragging Waziri was arranged to take after Ribadu, the government had at no time acknowledged the good  work of Ribadu like many other hardworking Nigerians too. They had instead dashed out National honours to their associates, prostitutes and bootlickers.
As if that was not enough, Ribadu and some other hard working police officers, (Yinka Balogun for emphasis) were demoted unjustly to various ranks. May I ask for the sake of enlightenment, what has happened to the likes of Tafa Balogun despite his conviction?
While these went on, for a man who understood his rights within and outside the police profession, he maintained a very respectable level of public decorum and sought legal relief. I would have expected that such gesture be commended and equally acknowledged. Lo and behold, Ribadu was made to go through another round of embarrassment as to whether he was fit to continue with his course at the NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State. For emphasis, this is one course you only embark on based on recommendation unlike JAMB or WAEC where you have to duly register to signify your intentions to participate. The Kuru episode as to whether or not Ribadu was fit to continue with his course after his unlawful demotion also exposed the moribund administrative approach of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, Mike Okiro and the Nigeria Police Commission.
To heighten this series of hatred, administrative high handedness, witch-hunt and outright disregards for the rule of law, Ribadu and his family members were forcefully dragged out of the unity Conference Hall of the NIPSS on the day he was supposed to graduate with 64 other colleagues,
Where then lies the hope of those of us who fall under the Nigerian definition of a common man, who can not afford a SAN to stand in for us in a court of law or who are not likely to enjoy any press coverage when we are faced with similar challenges?
I do not share the argument that Ribadu is being punished by Bigwigs who felt he had stepped on their toes while in office, I would rather resolutely stand on the fact that President Yar’adua is not only weak but equally an accomplice in the abuse of established rules governing the existence of Nigeria.
Finally, I consider it appropriate for organization s and groups to lend their voices and identify with the truth at this time of another man’s trying time. It is no gainsaying that we are all susceptible to the current madness. Like it is commonly said during the bizarre period of the Nazis; “When they came for the Jews, you claimed to be a Christian, when they came for the Christians, you claimed to be a Jew. The day they come for you, you can be no other person but you.”
Nigeria should learn to honour and appreciate Ribadu, this prosecution is far becoming an embarrassment to our Civil Rule as we all jointly anticipate we grow into a full fledge Democracy.

ProgrammingRe: Python Programming by EDIPO(m): 3:32pm On Nov 17, 2008
hey guys, i am new at python and doing some personal readings.

here are some problems i can get to solve alone, can you just help out please?

**A certain CS professorgives5-pointquizzesthat are graded on the scale 5-A,4-B, 3-C, 2-D,1-E, 0-F. Write a program that accepts a quiz score as an input and prints out the corresponding grade.

**A certain CS professor gives 100-point exams that are graded on the scale 90–100:A, 80–89:B, 70–79: C, 60–69: D, 60:F. Write a program that accepts an exam score as input and prints out the corresponding grade.

**An acronym is a word formed by taking the first letters of the words in a phrase and making a word from them. For example, RAM is an acronym for “random access memory.” Write a program that allows the user to type in a phrase and outputs the acronym for that phrase. Note: the acronym should be all uppercase, even if the words in the phrase are not capitalized.

**Numerologists claim to be able to determine a persons character traits based on the “numeric value” of a name. The value of a name is determined by summing up the values of the letters of the name where a is 1, b is 2, c is 3 etc., up to z being 26. For example, the name “Zelle” would have the 26+5+ 12+ 12+ 5= 60 (which happens to be a very auspicious number, by the way). Write a program that calculates the numeric value of a single name provided as an input.26

** Expand your solution to the previous problem to allow the calculation of a complete name such as “John Marvin Zelle” or “John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith.” The total value is just the sum of the numeric value for each name

** A Caesar cipher is a simple substitution cipher based on the idea of shifting each letter of the plain text message a fixed number (called the key) of positions in the alphabet. For example, if the key value is 2, the word “Sourpuss ”would be encoded as “Uqwtrwuu.” The original message can be recovered by “reencoding” it using the negative of the key. Write a program that can encode and decode Caesar ciphers. The input to the program will be a string of plaintext and the value of the key. The output will be an encoded message where each character in the original message is replaced by shifting it key characters in the ASCII character set. For example, if ch is a character in the string and key is the amount to shift, then the character that replaces ch can be calculated as: chr (ord(ch) + key).

** One problem with the previous exercise is that it does not deal with the case when we “drop off the end” of the alphabet (or ASCII encodings). A true Caesar cipher does the shifting in a circular fashion where the next character after “z” is “a”. Modify your solution to the previous problem to make it circular. You may assume that the input consists only of letters and spaces.

** Write a program that counts the number of words in a sentence entered by the user.

** Write a program that calculates the average word length in a sentence entered by the user.

** Word count. A common utility on Unix/Linux systems is a small program called “wc.” This program analyzes a file to determine the number of lines, words, and characters contained therein. Write your own version of wc. The program should accept a file name as input and then print three numbers showing the count of lines, words, and characters in the file.

thanks as i look out for your responses.

PRIDE IN OUR PAINS

I have seen and heard, like many of you had too, the tales of core discrimination against people because of the colour of their skin. I am aware that at one time, blacks could not gain entrance into pubs and bars, could not share swimming pools, worst of all, we had a voice that was not supposed to be heard.
This hatred transcended the face of the earth, even in what was predominantly a black region; we were traded like merchandise, transported in the most inhuman manner across the length and depth of the Atlantic to the white shores to work as slaves on sugarcane farms with the lips of out fore fathers held together with padlocks.
Then was that time when, men chose between their pride and existence, when men equated survival to equity, when nobility was measured by your stance to liberate your people, re-write your history and ensure your people were heard. It was that time that dreams were conceived, ideas were put forth, opinions designed, a time when resilience and perseverance was the watch word.
It was a battle that needed to not be won immediately, a selfless pursuit that was predicated on the principles of possibilities of victory as much as we have decided to fight. It was a battle powered by commitment, held with passion, pursued with undying spirit and as well met with ferocious attacks, maltreatment and wickedness by the threatened superior.
Lives were lost and properties destroyed all around, yet the blood that flowed in the black vein continuously fertilized the tree of freedom whose shade we hope to one day enjoy. Words of encouragement were our most vital weapons and our will to survive was our most trusted comrade in the face of betrayal from enemies within.
Our only options were what we were offered and nothing. Our choices were not only limited but pitifully few. We were reduced to victims of natural deeds and biological gifts. Despite all these, we grew a breed of gladiators, conscience fighters who believed, wished and hoped not only for a better today, but the best future for generations yet unborn. They waged battles to secure a future they would never be part of.
My black brothers and sisters, of whatever descent, the future is here. We have before today broken many grounds, displayed dexterity and ingenuity. We have shown love to those who hated us, fed those who starved us, freed those who imprisoned us, treated those who injured us and above all, accommodated those who rejected us. We truly have brought to life the future our forefathers hoped for. A tomorrow they so much believe and invested in. today we have stood tall in the face of all challenges. We have defied colour limitations and rewritten history.
It is truly a man’s victory; a victory we all know was predicated on belief, perseverance and will. A victory that was in the characteristic black style, dedicated to the people of the world, black or white, short or tall, old or young; a victory that seeks to break all barriers and bring man together to work as an entity to make the world a better place. A victory relished by all, irrespective of colour or background. A victory that would truly rewrite the history of the black race.
It all does not end with America and Americans, neither does it end with President-elect of the United States of America, Barrack Hussein Obama and his outstanding campaign team; that’s just a baseline. This is meant to fire us to move on and make the best of every odd. Let’s embrace with out heart, the true creed: YES WE CAN.
Yes we believed shall overcome, now we have and the process is continuous. Nothing big and good comes easy. It takes consistency, perseverance, persistent patience, will and belief to move on. Disregard the blocks and hitches, climb on them to grow taller, and don’t be carried away by the side attraction, its ephemeral. The ultimate destination is where you set to get to and when you are not there, you are just not there!
I congratulate my black brothers and sisters across the face of the planet, I congratulate our fellow white brothers and sisters as well, it is my belief that this singular landmark would reunite us as it has been demonstrated by the American voters who have seen and resolved to reach for solutions to the world problem that would never be submerged by the bitter taste of colour discrimination. I believe that we all can take a step from here to show love and kindness to our fellow beings irrespective of colour, religion, sex and economic status.
My pains are truly obvious, just as yours is, but today, I believe that we would all have reasons to pride our background and colour. That we would show love and teach others how to love and respect. That we would be humble in victory and responsible to the betterment of mankind. That above all, we would believe in the unity of humanity and that even when we fight, we would be friends at battle for at the end of the day, we would be seen to have jointly waged a war aimed at improving the lots of our fellow people.
If today, one of our own has conquered hatred, discrimination and ethnic bigotry and emerged as the President of the most powerful Nation in the world, if today, the feat had come to life because people chose to pay more attention to abilities, if today, the black and white blend of the piano keyboards has rendered another joyful melody, I URGE YOU ALL TO CELEBRATE OUR PRIDE DESPITE OUR PAINS.
Once again if we all choose to act and think right, heavens would dance around our achievements.
GOD BLESS THE WORLD.

i also fall for this whole thingy about genotype and marriage and i feel its taking its turns on lots of relationships.

this is my question for discussion.

despite the importance attached to genotype, would you stay with a morally stable lady that is AS like you choosing to take the risk of SS offspring or a wayward lady that is AA? in earnest, can you prioritise your lady's background over her genotype or not?

thank you.

@ codebase

sallam alaekum, i appreciate your correction and i feel olabowale has seen reasons with you.

may Allah strenghten you and make us all better muslims.

@ olabowale

sallam alaekum my brother, let me first start by saying that your comments were very harsh and thats not the way to address this issue.

the guy asking tis question is not a muslm and so there is a need to be careful the way you attend to his query.

dont make matters worse by passing fatwa with that tone.

dont forget that as bad as we think george bush is, the day he becomes a muslim, he becomes our brother! so steve49ja could be our brother one day.

@ steve49ja

how are you? its interesting to note from your tone that you guys already do sex and other things before now.

so if she finally chooses to stay away from the sinful ways in order to show respect for Allah, i think you should respect her decisions.

to have come this far to ask and open your relationship to public scrutiny shows your urge to continue having sex with her and that you don't trust her.

it also shows that she has made you get used so much to having sex and doing all the illicit things you listed by yourself.

well, the damage has been done, there is no point crying over spilt milk.

first, it is very wrong, emphasis on very wrong, to touch, talkless of having sex with a woman you are not married to. so whether ramadhan is here or not, you have been incurring the wrath of Allah over time. the solution here is, BEG FOR FORGIVENESS.

second, your girlfriend should have known she wasnot supposed to date you talkless of thinking of marriage. she is supposed to have known all these details and not put herslf in this mess.
don't mistake it here, even if she had chosen a muslim guy as her boyfriend (which is equally wrong), such activities are forbidden.

now, coming out to public to talk about this kind of stuff is in itself forbidden and incorrect, so desist from it.

above all, i pray to Allah to forgive you and make you see the truth and bring you onto the right path.

if i may ask, how would she feel if she finds out that you placed this on a thread.

think about all this, the real salvation is Islam. Allah would not look at whatever good deeds you must have done while leaving except you are a muslim.

i invoke Allah's forgiveness and mercy upon you and our sister currently under you.

best regards,
