Inner Galaxy Steel Company Nigeria Limited, a Chinese-owned company based in Abia State, has refuted allegations of foul play reported in the media on the death of Miss Vivian Ocheze Munachim, a crane operator with the company, who reportedly fell to her death from the crane she was operating on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked controversy and protests.

A statement by the company’s Public Affairs Manager, Mr Ceng Jing, said the unfortunate incident happened when Miss Ocheze fell asleep while operating the crane, causing her to lose control and fall.

The statement said other Nigerian staff who witnessed the accident had corroborated this account.

The company also denied rumours of a romantic relationship between a Chinese staff member and the deceased, stating that “there is no evidence whatsoever that a Chinese staff was having a relationship with the late Miss Vivian Ocheze Munachim.”

According to the statement, the tragic incident has led to an outbreak of violence, with reports of looting and the vandalization of the company’s property, including its warehouse, production line, oxygen station, vehicles, and other facilities and equipment.

“Unfortunately, instead of telling the truth, some people chose to take advantage of the tragedy to spread false information. Some people with sinister motives quickly gathered together and stormed the company, looting and burning, leading to the escalation of the crisis,” the statement reads.

The company assured the public that it is cooperating fully with the police investigation and is ready to provide support and compensation to the deceased’s family. They also urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated rumours.

The Kaduna State Government has opted not to engage with the recent criticisms leveled by Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, against Governor Uba Sani.

Governor Sani’s spokesman told The PUNCH that the governor would not reply El-Rufai’s son, who took to social media to attack the governor over the state’s debt profile.

El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, on his social media handle, accused his father’s successor Sani, of shying away from his responsibility by always staying away from the state and hibernating in Abuja.

The young El-Rufai accused the governor of surrounding himself with a retinue of incompetent aides appointed for political patronage.

However, when asked to react to Bashir’s claim, the governor’s spokesman maintained that his principal had stated the obvious on the financial status of the state.

“The task ahead of us is enormous and we won’t trade that for trivialities. His Excellency Senator Uba Sani has categorically stated the true financial status of the state,” Shehu said.

A 33-year-old man, Dominic Kenneth, who allegedly caused grievous harm to his neighbour by removing his scrotum, on Wednesday, appeared in an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

Mr Kenneth, whose address is not provided, is facing a count charge of causing grievous harm.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Prosecutor, Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on 1 March, at about 12:20 p.m. at No 1, Abdul Rasaq Street, Balogun area of Ikorodu.

Mr Okonofua said that Mr Kenneth unlawfully caused grievous harm to his neighbour (co-shop owner in the market), Pascal Uche, by allegedly removing one scrotum from his private part during a fracas.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 245 stipulates seven years in prison if the accused is found guilty.

The Magistrate, A.O. Onalaja, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties.

Mr Onalaja adjourned the case until 14 March for mention.

Two humpback whales were photographed having sex for the first time in their species' history — and both partners happened to be male.

The British news agency SWNS Media Group shared the news of the surprising encounter, which was first reported in a new study by a researcher at the Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) on Tuesday. National Geographic, Live Science and The Guardian also reported on the study's findings.

The whales were seen copulating by photographers Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano on January 19, 2022. The pair documented the encounter from a safe distance while in a boat off the Hawaiian island of Maui.

As the two males approached their boat, the photographers saw that one of them "was visibly thin and covered in whale lice," which drew their attention because it was a sign of poor health, the SWNS report said.

A second, healthier whale kept approaching the first whale and "using its pectoral fins to hold the injured whale in place, and initiating shallow, brief penetrations," the report said.

The animals slowly circled the boat a few times, which allowed the photographs to be taken while Krannichfeld and Romano remained within a legal distance of the whales. It's illegal in Hawaii to swim with or approach humpback whales within 100 yards.

The photographers recalled their encounter to Stephanie Stack, a whale researcher and the lead author on Tuesday's paper in Marine Animal Science.

"What they stumbled upon was an unprecedented observation. The groundbreaking photographs captured by Krannichfeld and Romano provide an unparalleled glimpse into the private lives of these majestic marine mammals," the PWF said in a statement about Krannichfeld and Romano's photographs.

The organization continued: "The health disparity between the two whales adds a layer of complexity to this unique observation. One whale’s poor condition, possibly caused by a ship strike, may have contributed to the observed behaviour," noting that this is the first time homosexual behavior has been documented in humpback whales, though it is common among cetaceans.
