The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed happiness over the landmark N5 billion financial earning of Nigerian clubs from the transfer of players both from within the domestic fronts and the foreign leagues in the last 10 months.

The Manager, Trans- fer Matching System (TMS) of the football federation, Nasir Jubril, who spoke to journalists at the ongoing Domestic Transfer Matching System (DTMS) workshop in Abuja, explained that the figure represents what the various clubs have received from the movement of their players in the period under review.

“In the last 10 months that is between January and October this year, a cash inflow of about N5 billion has accrued into coffers
of the clubs in Nigeria from transfer of players. For instance, if a player is bought for say £2 or £3 million, when you convert that with the current exchange rate you can imagine what we are talking about. It is an attestation that Nigerian football is making serious progress,” he noted.

While explaining the importance of the workshop, Jubril said that it is aimed at fully educating the managers of the 20 Nigerian Premier League (NPL) clubs as well as the 32 others competing in the lower Nigerian National League (NNL).

He equally revealed that the world football governing body, FIFA has now made it mandatory for every football player in the world to be registered by their federations, adding

that such has made the transfer of players either from one country to another or one club to the other less stressful.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday fixed December 1 for ruling on the bail applications filed by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and three others with whom he was charged with offences including treasonable felony and an act preparatory to act of terrorism.

Justice Binta Nyako fixed the date for ruling after lawyers to the four defendants argued their separate bail applications which were opposed by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, on Thursday.

Others with whom Kanu was re-arraigned on November 8, were the National Coordinator of IPOB member, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.They were, in the 11 counts, including treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods.

Onwudiwe was specifically accused in one of the counts of an act preparatory to an act of terrorism.

All the counts were in connection with the accused persons’ alleged broadcasts on Radio Biafra and agitation for the secession from Nigeria, states in the South-East and South-South zones and other communities in Kogi and Benue states to constitute a Republic of Biafra.

The judge had on November 8, fixed Thursday for the hearing of the bail applications shortly after the accused pleaded not guilty to the amended 11 counts preferred against them by the Federal Government.

The four accused persons were represented by their separate lawyers, Ifeanyi Ejiofor (for Kanu); Mr. I. Adoga (for Onwudiwe); Mr. E. I Efeme (for Madubugwu) and Mr. Maxwell Okpara (for Nwaiwusi).

At the hearing on Thursday the lawyers urged the judge to dismiss the counter-affidavit filed in opposition to their clients’ applications.

They contended that the claim by the prosecution that their clients would constitute a threat to national security if released on bail pending the conclusion of their trial was false.
Efeme said, “The prosecution has the duties to give the particulars of how the defendants would constitute national security.

EDO State House of Assembly yesterday approved a pension benefit of a private residence valued at N200million anywhere in the state, for former governors of the state. The list includes Mr Adams Aliyu Eric Oshiomhole, Senator Oserheimhen Osunbor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Dr Sam Ogbemudia. The assembly also approved N100million worth of house for all former deputy governors. If the law is assented to all the former governors and their deputies stand to enjoy the pension benefit of residential buildings worth N200 million and N100 million. The bill titled, “A bill for a law to amend the 2007 Pension Rights of the Governor and Deputy Governor Law” was approved by the house at the committee of the whole. The only amendment to the pension rights of the governor and deputy was the inclusion of the value of the residential buildings in any location of their choice in Nigeria. According to the bill with the subhead titled, “provision of a house” read thus; a house in a location of choice in Nigeria of the Governor provided that the total cost of building the house shall not be in excess of 200 million naira while 100 million naira for the deputy governor. Other benefits to be enjoyed by the governor are, a pension for life at a rate equivalent to 100 percent of his last annual salary in addition to an officer not above salary grade level 12 as Special Assistant. A personal secretary not below grade level 10 who shall be selected by the former governor from the public service of Edo state. He is also entitled to have two cooks, two armed policemen as security, three vehicles to be bought by the State Government and liable to be replaced every five years. 3 drivers who shall be selected by the former governor and paid by the state
government as well as free medical treatment for the governor and his immediate family. On the other hand, the deputy governor was entitled to 100 percent of his last annual salary as pension, a personal staff not above salary grade level 12 as Special Assistant, a personal secretary not below grade level 09, a cook and two policemen as security. Also approved for the governor are 2 vehicles to be bought by the state government and liable to be replaced every five years, two drivers who shall be selected by the former deputy governor and paid by the state government and free medical treatment for him and his immediate family. In addition, the assembly has suspended the former speaker of the House, Victor Edoror (APC) representing Esan Central constituency for three months. It was gathered that the former speaker was suspended over alleged failure to appear before ad-hoc committee set up by the house to investigate the alleged financial impropriety levelled against him while in office as speaker. Recall that Edoror was May 3, 2016 impeached by the members of the house over alleged financial recklessness, highhandedness, dictatorial tendencies among other.

AMIDST growing public concern over the apparent avalanche of plastic rice into Nigerian market and with the Federal Government’s announcement of imminent famine next year coupled with Nigeria’s craze for imported goods, experts have raised alarm of possible flooding of the Nigerian market with harmful “plastic rice.” The world was alerted of the industrial manufacture of rice by Chinese firms since 2011. In a report by the Korean Times on the growing menace, the newspaper said, “China famous for having all, making all, has now been reported to have made rice out of plastic and has distributed it. “The Korean-language Weekly Hong Kong in Hong Kong quoted Singapore media that “Fake rice made out of plastic is massively sold on the Chinese market. According to the report, some
distributors are selling fake rice in Taiyuan, Shaanxi Province, and this rice is a mixture of potatoes, sweet potatoes and plastic. “This ‘plastic rice’ is made by forming potatoes and sweet potatoes into rice-like shape, then adding industrial synthetic resins,” said a food expert. “Since the rice is different from normal rice, it is hard like stone even when cooked. Moreover, the synthetic resin in it is very harmful to the human body.” One Chinese restaurant association official warns that eating three bowls of ‘plastic rice’ is the same as eating one vinyl bag. He added that since the rice is very dangerous, there would be strict investigation on the rice factory. But Nigerians can determine if the rice they have is genuine or not by following any of the simple tests: Water test: Pour a tablespoon of raw rice into a glass filled with cold water and mix vigorously. If the rice falls to the bottom of the glass, everything is fine; if on the contrary it floats on the surface, be vigilant because it surely contains plastic! Fire test: Using a lighter and a match, burn a handful of rice; if it catches fire and smells of burnt plastic, you know what to do! Do not eat it! Mortar and pestle test: When molding a few grains of rice with a mortar and pestle, the powder should be quite white. For artificial rice, you will notice a yellow discoloration instead. Mold test: If you want to be sure that you do not risk anything with your cooked rice, put a small amount into a tupperware and leave it in a warm place. In a few days, mold will have to appear; otherwise it is that your rice is artificial.

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has switched camp to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kalu was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from where he moved to found the Progressives People Alliance (PPA).

His new bride, APC, rolled out the red carpet for Kalu as he teamed up with the governing party, Wednesday.

The Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee of the party received Kalu at its National Secretariat.



In joining the APC, Kalu said he is only yielding to pressure from friends and well wishers.

He also added that he’ll help the APC gain some acceptance in the South-East region of the country.

This may well be a coup for the APC, especially because voters in the South East region still thumb their noses at the APC as a ‘Muslim’ political party.

Kalu is street smart. He is also a seasoned political campaigner who is however short on matching his rhetoric with action.

The former Governor is a hardened, if duplicitous, noisome and willy-nilly character.

He has picked fights with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his successor Theodore Orji--a man he helped enthrone Governor.

He called Obasanjo a "super thief".

Kalu also has a history of corrupt enrichment.



In October 2016, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dragged Kalu before a Federal High Court in Lagos for money laundering.

Kalu was charged alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Ltd., and his former Commissioner for Finance, Jones Ude, on 34 counts bordering on money laundering.According to the charge sheet, the accused persons were alleged to have retained about N3.2 billion in different accounts. The sum belongs to the Abia State Government, the prosecution tendered.

In joining the governing APC, is Kalu looking for a soft landing from his corruption case with the anti-graft agency?

The opposition PDP considers the President Muhammadu Buhari anti-corruption war, a witch-hunt.

According to the PDP, only its members have been hauled before the courts for acts bordering on alleged corruption and larceny.

Akin Oyebode is a Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence and the Chairman of the Office of International Relations, Partnerships and Prospects, University of Lagos.
In this interview with PREMIUM TIMES’ Ben Ezeamalu, he spoke about the raids on the homes of some senior judges by the State Security Service, SSS (also called DSS), the implications of ECOWAS Court’s decision against the Nigerian government, and the state of Nigeria’s foreign policy.
The don spoke after the raids on the judges homes and several days before any of them was charged to court.
PT: What are your thoughts on the SSS invasion of the homes of some judges over the weekend?
Oyebode: I think it’s a sad day for Nigeria, because you don’t break the law in order to implement the law. Which is what the DSS seem to be saying, that because of the inaction or lack of cooperation by the NJC they had to resort to self-help.
In fact, my gut reaction is that this might be the handiwork of a fifth columnist, those that want to do in the government of Buhari. I’m not sure a Buhari who has touted himself as a born-again democrat, welded to the notion of rule of law will authorize the outrageous act by the DSS.
I don’t believe breaking into homes at the dead of the night and arresting judges accused of corruption is part and parcel of the mandate of the DSS. The DSS is a security police to arrest attempts to overthrow the government of the day, treason, sedition, all those anti-government acts. Whereas corrupt practice is under the jurisdiction, in my view, of the ICPC or EFCC. By no stretch of the imagination can the DSS be said to have it within its jurisdiction.So either some people…misguided…who wants to impress the powers that be by their work decided to go for broke in that respect. And I think it should be deprecated because there are so many rules of law that have been breached. And their subsequent comment, almost trying to try the accused in newspapers and what have you, because the accused have presumption of innocence and the onus of proof is on the state, and the onus is proved beyond reasonable doubt.So you are giving impressions that you have basis and reasons for what you did and you have not ensured that the public hears the side of the arrested persons, which is unfair.
PT: The SSS said it was due to the failure of the NJC to cooperate with their investigations that led to the raid. What do you think should have been the best way to have handled the situation?
Oyebode: Under the Abdulsalam constitution, the NJC is charged with the task of discipline of the judiciary. So if any judicial officer is accused of acts of malfeasance, then that falls squarely within the province of the NJC who could take the matter up, investigate and separate such a person from the judiciary. Now having separated the judge who had been found wanting in terms of his calling and judicial oath – you know there’s a judicial oath that judges swear when they are appointed, to do justice to all manner of persons without fear, affection or ill-will to be very neutral, non-partisan, fair to everybody, and not bend the scales of justice in favour of any accused person. That’s the judicial oath.
So if any of them is found to have violated that oath, definitely he should be removed from the judiciary. The removal from the judiciary will lay the foundations for trial for any acts that are of a criminal act, say bribery and corruption and what have you.
But the way things turned out, the DSS is the accuser, the jury, and almost the executioner. It’s not done. Because in Ghana, last year when they had the problem with some judicial officers, there was no histrionics, there was no brouhaha, razzmatazz. They separated those judges from the judiciary without fanfare. But we seem in Nigeria to always put out foot in our mouth. And even if they had altruistic motives and patriotic feelings they should be reminded of the saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. So it’s not for them to say we are acting in defence of Nigeria’s national interest and breaking down all the rules of engagement. The police are the proper province not the DSS, because the judges were not accused of treason, sedition, or attempts to overthrow the government of the day.PT: The presidency had said they were fighting corruption, and not the judges. Some have even argued that the end justifies the means when it comes to strategies to combat corruption and that focus should be on the result, not the method. Do you support that? Oyebode: I’ve just said it. That you don’t adopt a Machiavellian approach in the face of due process of law. This end justifies the means is untenable in a democracy. I mean, if we were living in Idi Amin’s Uganda, that’s acceptable. But in a country that is sworn to democratic praxis and respect for the law, due process, presumption of innocence, right to fair hearing… all sorts of things in terms of human rights, it’s indefensible. It’s a cheap alibi. I think the presidency was hiding behind a finger, because that would be unacceptable not only to me but to the generality of Nigerians.
There are a few Nigerians, of course, who will hail any action whether it complies with the rule of law, who will say whatever government does is right. Father knows best. In this sense, we have to wash with cynical acid any claims that national interest overrides the rule of law because if you don’t have the law, you have chaos, anarchy. So I’m sorry, you either have the rule of law or arbitrariness. There’s nothing like a slightly pregnant woman. You just accept what the law prescribes or you don’t do it.
That’s why I cited the proverb: the road to hell is paved with good intentions. That’s what the presidency is saying. And for the life of me, I would never think I would live to hear a government cough out such a cheap indefensible alibi.

Businessman and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil and Gas, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, has flooded the capital city of Awka with posters of his governorship ambition in 2017.

The posters which were seen in strategic places in Awka, bore the inscription: Restoration 2017, Ifeanyi Ubah for Governor Anambra State, however did not state the party he was intending to actualise his ambition.Meanwhile, Ubah has distanced self from the campaign posters saying they did not emanate from him or his office.

The disclaimer which was issued by Ubah’s media aide, Ikechukwu Onyia reads, “My attention has been drawn to posters tagged “Restoration 2017” with my picture and the inscription “Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah for Governor 2017” powered by Concerned Anambra Professionals.
“Let it be well noted that persons doing this do not have the consent of Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah and Ubah has distanced himself from such posters even as he urges the general public to discountenance everything connected thereof.”

He said Ubah is focusing on finding answers to the disheartening youth unemployment crisis bedeviling the society and which has eaten deep into the fabrics of the system.

Onyia said Ubah plans to curb this through his numerous employment platforms and windows for now and would not be distracted by the politics of 2017 Anambra Governorship election, and the posters.

Onyia added that while democracy allows for people to take positions on political matters, he frowns at using his name and pictures for politics without his approval as that could be called suspicious behaviour on the part of those behind it.

He also noted that pasting of 2017 Governorship election posters now by anybody, amounts to distraction to Gov Obiano and capable of overheating the polity.

Resident doctors attached to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State last week protested over unpaid four months salaries owed them by the Federal Government, threatening to withdraw medical services to patients on November 15.

The protesting doctors, under the Association of Resident Doctors said though they have met the management of the Federal Medical Centre over the issue, the responses were not encouraging.

The aggrieved resident doctors led by their Chairman, Dr. NonsoOkoye, and armed with placards some of which reads “Our Families are hungry”, FG pay our salaries” and “we are hungry, MMM is becoming an option”‎, called on Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to pay up salaries owed them.

The protesting doctors in Bayelsa recently. According to the protesters, they ‎were paid 52 per cent salary from February to May, 2016 and owed September and October.

“We want the Federal Government to pay us our monies. We have not withdrawn services. All we are saying is for the government to pay us for work done.

“Nigerians should prevail on the Federal Government to pay us. As much as we don’t want to withdraw our services, we have resolved to withdraw the services by 15th of November if nothing is done. “We have met with the management but all they did was pay us a month salary.

They told us that the budget available cannot pay salary,” the protesters said. ‎Contacted, the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Dennis Alagoa said the blame is not from the management, but added “with Tuesday statement by the President, we are assured that the issue will be resolved soon.”

Edo Agog As Obaseki Takes Over
Several towns and local government headquarters, including Benin City, the Edo State capital, have been agog since yesterday as Governor Adams Oshiomhole formally hands over to Godwin Obaseki today.

Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won the governorship election September, would be sworn in today.

Sokoto State Governors Aminu Tambuwal; his Bauchi counterpart, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar; former Ogun State governor, Chief Segun Osoba; and business mogul, Aliko Dangote, were among the early dignitaries already in Benin for Obaseki’s inauguration.And at a thanksgiving service at the St Paul’s Catholic Church last night, Oshiomhole, in what was his valedictory speech, commuted the death sentence on four condemned prisoners to life imprisonment.
He also pardoned two persons, a male and a female, who were serving seven years jail-term for impersonating him and a personal assistant to his wife, promising to assist them in their education.

Apparently referring to the deposition of the traditional ruler of Uromi, Anselm Aidenojie, over alleged attack on a woman, Oshiomhole said even as a Christian, he believes that God will only forgive those who beg for forgiveness.

He also cited his altercation with a widow a few years ago, where he used derogatory statements on her, but on realising that he was wrong, invited her to his office and “assisted her to open a shop, so that she won’t be tempted to trade on the streets again and then gave her a job to support her family.”

Apparently making reference to the deposed monarch, he said the Bible also confirms that anybody who offends, “be you a traditional ruler, a chief to your subject and to anybody for that matter, nobody is above the law and even with what the Bible preaches, you can only forgive those who ask for forgiveness.”

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says daily consumption of foodstuffs in the state is worth over N3bn.

He added that investors in the agricultural sector had a ready market and returns on their investments.

The governor spoke at the maiden edition of the Lagos Food Security and Exhibition Summit with the theme, ‘Actualising Sustainable Food Security in Lagos State: A New Comprehensive Agenda,’ adding that his administration would maximise Lagos comparative advantage to achieve food security.He said, “Nigeria has no business importing foodstuffs to feed its citizens. We must cultivate the land and improve efficiency in the agricultural value chain.

“Our core policy thrust towards achieving food security is to maximise the comparative advantage of the state in agriculture and partner other states.”

Ambode said his administration had partnered the Kebbi State Government for the development of agricultural commodities such as rice, wheat, groundnut and onion, expressing optimism that the partnership would result in the supply of 70 per cent of the total national rice consumption.

“We have also acquired agricultural land in Ogun, Osun and Oyo states, as well as Abuja for rice cultivation and oil palm processing, among others,” the governor said.

He said the summit was organised to bring together stakeholders in the agricultural sector to proffer solutions to the challenges militating against the achievement of food security.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Food Security, Mr. Sanni Okanlawon, said the summit would realign emerging realities with new global trends on food safety, processing and funding for agr0business.

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, granted bail to a former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, in the sum of N50m after he was arraigned on five counts of N26m fraud.

Fani-Kayode, the Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election, pleaded not guilty to all the five counts preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC accused the defendant of diverting N26m, allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the headship Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).The EFCC also accused him of handling the said N26m without going through a financial institution as required under the Money Laundering Act.

Fani-Kayode is equally standing trial along with others in the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in connection with over N800m allegedly received from the N4.7bn allegedly collected by the Director of Finance of the campaign organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman, from the ONSA.

In the fresh charges, Fani-Kayode is the sole defendant in the fresh charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/140/2016, filed before the Abuja Division of the court.

Shortly after the arraignment on Thursday, Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), moved his client’s bail application, which was opposed by EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Johnson Ojogbane.

But the trial judge, Justice John Tsoho, dismissed the EFCC’s objection to the bail application, holding that the defendant was presumed innocent.

The judge granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N50m with one surety.

As part of the bail conditions, the court also ordered the accused person to deposit his passport with the court registrar pending the conclusion of his trial.

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has congratulated FC Ifeanyi Ubah for clinching this year's Federation Cup after a gruelling penalty shootout with Nasarawa United on Saturday, describing the victory as a "gift to Anambra State."

The highly elated governor praised the players and the coaching crew for demonstrating what he referred to as the "Spirit of Anambra" on the field of play by showing so much resilience, focus and determination to clinch victory and of course the trophy from their hard-fighting opponents.

Speaking through James Eze, his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Governor Obiano observed that though the club was a new entrant into Nigerian football, the players had approached the game with a tactical depth that was far ahead of their relative experience at this stage of competitive football.Said he, "The lads showed the kind of resolve and concentration that you do not easily associate with new comers to this level of the game. They had everything going for them - focus, determination, tactical discipline and a hunger for victory. Chelsea cruised to the top of the Premier League with an emphatic victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge thanks to two goals from Eden Hazard with Marcos Alonso, Diego Costa and Pedro also on target.
Not since winning the 2014-15 title have Chelsea led the top flight, but they took advantage of Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough earlier on Saturday to do so, though Arsenal or Liverpool could displace them by winning their respective matches on Sunday.

The State Government has presented a Certificate of Recognition to the newly elected traditional ruler of Awka Etiti community in Idemili South Council Area, Igwe Micheal Ezeudenma.
Governor Willie Obiano made the presentation at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia during a brief ceremony that attracted the people and friends of the community.
Presenting the certificate, Governor Obiano who described leadership as an avenue to touch lives, said that what is mostly required is a genuine intention to lead the people aright and consistently carry them along in the leadership process.
Governor Obiano charged the new traditional ruler to avoid engaging in acts that can smear the image of the traditional institution but to strive at all times, to work closely with the government so as to ensure that the community is integrated in the development process.
He further assured that his government will avail him the necessary support he requires to succeed on the throne and urged Awka Etiti people to do same.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, Mr Greg Obi who recalled how the community had been ravaged by crisis associated with electing traditional rulers, however pointed out that in their quest for peace, the people had decided to make the Igweship rotational, adding that the election of the new traditional ruler was done in line with the laid down processes.
In an admonition, the traditional ruler of Mbaukwu, Igwe Peter Anukwu while commending Governor Obiano for his transformation agenda and efforts at entrenching peace in communities, charged the newly elected traditional ruler to always uphold the tradition of Igbos and to respect constituted authorities, especially the present administration of governor Obiano.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he contemplated running away from office shortly after he was inaugurated as Nigeria's president on May 29, 2015.
Mr. Buhari said the ongoing economic crisis has made him feel as though he is suffering the consequences of someone else's transgressions.
The lamentations were part of the president's address to members of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies who visited him in the State House Thursday afternoon."Actually, I felt like absconding," Mr. Buhari said. "Because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries."Mr. Buhari said when he assumed office, he asked officials if there was enough money in the federal coffers for him to spend and he got a negative response.
"I asked if there was any savings and I was told there was no savings. I asked what they did on agriculture, power, rails and roads. There was nothing," Mr. Buhari said.
Mr. Buhari said he also discovered that Nigeria had no strategic highways and the available ones were in a terrible state.
"You know more than I do because you move around. I have not been moving around since after elections but you do. How many of the Trunk A roads are still good enough?"
Mr. Buhari also said even though cases of sabotage are frequently recorded in the power distribution, that still failed to explain why Nigerians are still grappling with poor electricity supply.
"How much power do we have although there are some elements of sabotage?" Mr. Buhari said.
Mr. Buhari said his government has been rendered largely helpless in the face of the economic crisis because crude oil no longer sells at high prices as he had hoped.
"Between 1999 and 2015, the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel. When we came it fell to less $30 per barrel and is now hovering between $40 and $50," the president said.
The president said officials also told him that the government was spending heavily to import fuel and food items, an excuse he said he found ridiculous since Nigerians hardly consume imported staple.
"I was told the money was used to import food and fuel. I didn't believe the answer and I still do not believe it."Up till now, a substantial number of people in the East eat garri and groundnut; in the West they eat pounded yam, cassava, vegetables; in the North, they eat tuwo which is made from any of the grains: millet, sorghum.
"They eat it in the night and warm it in the morning and eat it and take fura in the afternoon. How many of those people can afford foreign food?"
Mr. Buhari also condemned the fuel subsidy regime of his predecessors, saying it served as a conduit which the Nigerian elite exploited to swindle the poor masses.
"Then they said I should check out the petroleum sector. The legislature dedicated 445,000 barrels per day for internal consumption and that is just 60 per cent of our requirements. I said 'okay, what of the 40 per cent?'
"The marketers that are bringing it just present documents, papers are just stamped and monies are taken away.
"This is the type of things that the Nigerian elites are doing for our own country. When you go back, look at your colleagues and encourage them to be truly Nigerians."
The president, however, vowed to do all in his capacity to resolve the economic crisis.
Mr. Buhari defeated incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in a keently-contested election in March 2015.He has repeatedly blamed the former government for his administration's woes.

The same abuse of women by Nigerian soldiers happened in Liberia many years ago during the Liberian Civil War. When it happened, the Nigerian authorities did not take the soldiers’ actions seriously. There was a cover-up. Nigerian soldiers went to that country and populated it with children from war-ravaged women who were seeking refuge.
Today, these children are grown up and back in Nigeria, looking for their fathers. But this time around, we all must rise up to say no to the sexual abuse by our soldiers. A few things the Federal Government should do include; one, it must immediately set up a special court martial to try those erring soldiers.Secondly, so as to encourage the victims to talk, there must be women rights groups who will go to the IDP camps and interact with the abused women. If the authorities go in during the investigations, they are likely not to get the facts as the victims would not talk.
Sexual abuse is a situation whereby even if the women say they consented to the act, it does not free the soldiers from the crime. These soldiers are in a position of authority and in a position where the women could hardly resist them. So, they had no right to touch any woman. We should not accept testimonies from any woman saying that she consented to the act. Any soldier said to have been raped any IDPs must be prosecuted and jailed like a civilian.
Abubakar Tsav (A former Commissioner of Police, Lagos State)This case of sexual abuse is a serious disloyalty on the part of the soldiers and a failure of the system. The Federal Government asked the soldiers to protect the women and instead of carrying out that responsibility, they resorted to sexually abusing them.

It is very bad. It is morally wrong and professionally unethical. In addition, if these soldiers are identified, they should be dealt with.
If the women can also identify the people who raped and impregnated them, the culprits should be compelled to marry them.
We must also not forget that in a case of rape, it requires immediate medical report to prove the act in court. I advise the government to take the welfare of our women in the Internally Displaced Persons camps very seriously.
The condition of the IDPs is not commendable at the moment. If the condition is not disorganised as it were, there would not be opportunities for soldiers to take advantage of the women.
The responsibility of the government is to look after the women and that was why the soldiers were brought in, in the first place. I also subscribe to the idea of deploying female soldiers to the female section of the IDPs. This will go a long way in guarding against sexual harassment against the female IDPs.

For serving soldiers to be caught abusing the women under their care, this is unacceptable.
Such soldiers should be arraigned for rape. Apart from violating their professional code, such soldiers can also be arraigned for rape and tried in a court of law. What the soldiers have done is a violation of the Armed Forces law.
On the IDPs, the government should ensure that military women are posted to our female IDP camps. As a government which is concerned with the protection and welfare of its citizens, the way to guard against this abuse is to let female soldiers be around our female IDP camps.

It is a very painful scenario. The suspected soldiers should be apprehended and if found culpable, dismissed. If some of them are punished, it would serve an example to others.
The women are already in a tragic situation and then, you have some soldiers, who are again trying to manipulate them. The soldiers are not making things easy for these women. If the soldiers rape our women, who then can we trust to protect them?
The solutions to this are; one, the government should consider deploying female soldiers to the female section of the camp. Let the female soldiers attend to the women. The women should be empowered; they must be taught how to stand for their rights and how to say no to abuses.
For the pregnant women, the government should rise up to its responsibility and take adequate care of them by ensuring proper antenatal care.

The President has actually set up an investigative panel to look into the allegation. For now, the sexual harassment by the soldiers is still at the level of allegation. But without preempting the outcome of the investigation, we know that such harassment cannot be ruled out.
And if this is true, there are procedures of handling offenders, especially in the military. Some of these officers have been tried before for cases of corruption and diversion of allowances. If a soldier is found culpable, he should be tried appropriately.
The victims are vulnerable women, whose rights are being abused. The Federal Government should carry out its own investigations and get to the root of the matter.
On the welfare of the women already put in the family way, we should remember that the camp is made up of male and female occupants. Therefore, there is the possibility of some male inmates being responsible for the sexual assaults on the female inmates.
Generally, the IDPs are more or less a society of people and whatever is the outcome of government’s investigation, the authorities should do the proper thing.
The government also owes a responsibility to get the women, especially the young girls, rehabilitated. The government should look into the funds raised for the camps and ensure that the funds were disbursed appropriately. This goes beyond the Borno State Government.
We need the Federal Government and even international donors to come to the aid of these vulnerable women. This is a matter that should be handled with urgent attention.

Nigeria needs a mechanism to do data gathering on these issues and not rely on foreign reports, which are sometimes said to be tilted.
Having said that, I also believe the government needs to respond to this allegation swiftly. A quick fact-finding should be done to determine those soldiers who are culpable.
Of course, sanctions should be meted out to those found guilty of such an ugly and nasty behaviour. It is a pity that having been delivered from the ugly grip of the Boko Haram, these women again fall into a second tragedy.

Michael Legge, a factory worker from Britain has been growing his beard for six whole years and now the facial hair measures over 2ft.
