In 2014 Thomas Piketty, a little known French academic economist, published his global bestseller Capital in the Twenty First Century. This book, all of 900 pages long, captured the spirit of the age. Piketty’s book reflected a growing concern about the enormous inequality that has blighted western societies at the beginning of the 21st century.Piketty famously stated that returns on capital grew faster than the incomes of the poor, leading to even greater inequality. Piketty’s arguments were welcomed by a world ever conscious of growing inequality. The success of the so called ‘1%’ – bankers, financial speculators and entrepreneurs who control so much of modern wealth – is clearly visible. But what should the response of politicians be to growing inequality? How can we reconcile the obvious need to grow the economy while ensuring the weakest and most vulnerable in society do not get left behind?A number of measures have been introduced to make sure that the rich pay their fair share in taxation. In Britain alone we have had increases in stamp duty and, in the last six years, increases in capital gains tax. Socialist France, under the leadership of Francois Hollande, introduced a 75% income tax for incomes over 1 million euros a year. Hollande’s government increased this tax before Piketty’s bestselling book was published. A “soak the rich” atmosphere has been prevalent in many developed countries since the financial collapse of 2008.The danger with this increased taxation is that it discourages people from creative enterprise. Many natural entrepreneurs will think if they are going to be taxed at more than 50% why should they bother? The point at which someone works more for the government than he or she does for themselves can often be a point of no return, utterly demoralising wealth creators who, in turn, simply do not invest. This creates a situation in which business contracts, there are no incentives, and the wealth generated by a society or a country simply diminishes. This whole process is self-defeating, leading to entrepreneurs being discouraged and unwilling to invest in their ideas. This has an adverse effect on jobs and the economy. The challenge for politicians is the same as it has always been. How can a society create wealth, while at the same time ensuring a sense of community, and a “safety net” for the most vulnerable and the least privileged? More radical solutions, such as aggressive taxation of income, or wealth taxes, have been tried in the past. Famously, during the 1970s, the United Kingdom had a top tax rate on earned income of 83%. Top taxation rates on unearned income were even higher. This high taxation regime did not lead to better economic outcomes for the community as a whole. On the contrary, people left the country as tax exiles and Britain, for a number of other reasons, was widely derided as the “sick man of Europe”. More can be done to prevent corporations from giving exorbitant pay and bonuses to corporate leaders. Indeed, shareholder revolts, where institutional shareholders vote down large pay awards, have recently occurred. What is often overlooked in the discussion of equality is that global inequality is being reduced all the time. Millions of people across the world are becoming more affluent and leaving behind the daily struggle for subsistence, which has dogged human beings for thousands of years. Nigeria will play for pride in the game against Tanzania and will also use the opportunity to prepare for the Fifa World Cup qualifying game against Zambia in October. Following a disappointing Afcon 2017 qualifying campaign, the Super Eagles have a new gaffer who will look to steer Nigeria to a third successive World Cup appearance. The journey will begin on Saturday when new German coach Gernot Rohr makes his bow as the coach of the most populous black nation in the world.Olympic bronze medal aside, it has been more gloom than bright lights for Nigerian football in 2016. The road to redemption starts with the game against Tanzania. Both teams are out of the running for Gabon 2017 as Egypt’s Pharaohs will have the honour of eating at the exalted table for Group G when hostilities kick off at the Africa Cup of Nations next year. Nigeria sits in the second position in Group G with two points from three games while Tanzania have just a single point after three matches while Chad has no points having withdrawn from the qualifiers at the half way stage. Group G standings Egypt P4 W3 D1 LO GF7 GA1 GD +6 PTS10 Nigeria P3 W0 D2 L1 GF1 GA2 GD -1 PTS 2 Tanzania P3 W0 D1 L2 GF0 GA5 GD -5 PTS 1 Chad *All matches and results involving Chad are cancelled. Players to watch Mikel Obi Nigeria captain Mikel Obi has blossomed in recent times and will be the man to lead out the Super Eagles against Tanzania. Fresh from leading Nigeria to Olympic bronze, Mikel looks like a man reborn since he was handed the armband. Many players in the squad have gushed over his leadership qualities but the Chelsea man has more than that in his arsenal. It is expected that he will play a free role in the team under Rohr. Mbwana Samatta Poster boy of Tanzanian football and skipper of the Taifa Stars. Samatta’s move to Belgian side RC Genk has seen him improve on all fronts. A direct and pacy striker, he will be the man the Eagles have to watch out for. Aside from an eye for goal, Samatta is also a penalty box predator who also possess clinical finishing abilities. The Eagles defence will do well to keep an eye on him. Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/09/nigeria-vs-tanzania.html?m=1

Mr Ogbonnaya Nta, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Abia, has confirmed the death of Mr Chinweoda Ndubuisi, a pastor with Foursquare Gospel Church in Umuahia, the Abia capital. Nta told newsmen in Umuahia on Thursday that Ndubuisi, who was in his early 40s, died in an explosion from a faulty generator in his residence. He said that Ndubuisi was trapped in the fire resulting from the explosion which occurred in the presence of a generator repairer while trying to fix the generator. Nta said that the incident occurred at Plot 100, Nkwerre Street, Umuahia, on Wednesday evening. He said that the deceased engaged the repairer to work on the generating set and that it suddenly caught fire while they were still trying to kick-start it.According to the PPRO, fire and smoke engulfed the corner under a staircase, where the generator was securely chained to an iron protector. He said that while the repairer, who reportedly stood close to the exit door managed to escape, the deceased could not.A friend of the deceased told pressmen on the condition of anonymity on phone that although his neighbours rallied round to put out the fire, it was difficult to rescue the deceased. He said that efforts made to drag the burning generator from under the staircase by the rescue team were unsuccessful because it was chained. By the time the fire was put out completely, the man was already dead,” Nta said, Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/09/man-dies-trying-to-fix-faulty-generator.html?m=1

It was a gory sight as the body of a 50-year-old man, identified as Chief Ekanem Edet, dangled from a rope tied to the roof of his room at Mbiabong Itam in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Ekanem Edet, former Secretary of the Mbiabong Village Council, popularly called Jolly Boy, waited until his wife and two sons went out before taking his life, allegedly leaving a suicide note in which he blamed his action on harsh economic condition.According to a close family source, the deceased, in the suicide note, blamed government for inflicting unbearable pains and hardship on Nigerians.A close associate of the deceased, Mr. Okon Effiong, told newsmen that Ekanem Edet was discovered dead by his friend, who went to visit him.He added that Edet was immediately buried after some traditional rites of passage were performed. He said: “He was a very sociable man and always shared his thoughts on issues. I do not know why he should consider suicide as the last option to escape from these hard times.” the deceased complained bitterly about the current economic crunch. According to a family source, “Edet took his life, blaming his action on the prevailing hardship.” The source added that the deceased, who deals on Ogogoro, cigarettes and other stimulants, decided to take his life when it appeared that he could no longer run his small family with the meagre earnings from his trade.A pastor at the local church recalled: “He used to complain that his petty business was no longer fetching him and his family basic needs such as food, clothing and fees for the children’s education.“He was always blaming government for the economic policies that do not allow him afford basic commodities such as gari, bread, yam, rice, beans, oil, kerosene and other essential goods.” Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/09/50-year-old-man-kill-himself-and-blame.html?m=1

A legend of martial arts cinema, a film editor with 60 years of experience, a celebrated documentarian and the casting director for films like “Tootsie” and “Fiddler on the Roof” will receive honorary Oscars from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the organization’s Governors Awards on Nov. 12.The academy announced its selections — Jackie Chan, Anne V. Coates, Frederick Wiseman and Lynn Stalmaster — Thursday morning. The group’s 54-member board, which represents about 7,000 members, picked the recipients in a vote Tuesday night. Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the academy’s president, called the four honorees “true pioneers.” Last year, the academy used its Governors Awards, one of which went to Spike Lee, to emphasize a need for greater diversity in the movie business. The new selections continue that theme, but are also notable for spreading the recognition among an array of cinematic specialties. Casting directors, in particular, have long felt overlooked, largely because no competitive Oscar is awarded for their craft. Mr. Chan, 62, has starred in (and sometimes written, directed and produced) more than 30 martial arts films, most of them made in his native Hong Kong. He received crossover success in the 1990s with “Rumble in the Bronx” and “Rush Hour.” Lately, he has contributed voice-over work to the “Kung Fu Panda” animated series. He has never been nominated for an Oscar. The academy has been stung this year by criticism about a lack of diversity among nominees and for jokes during the last Oscars ceremony that some Asian members found offensive.Ms. Coates, 90, was nominated for five film editing Oscars and won once, in 1963, for her work on “Lawrence of Arabia.” Over her six-decade career, she has worked on films as varied as “The Elephant Man,” directed by David Lynch in 1980, and the 2015 erotic thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey. Mr Chugbo Enwezor, the Anambra Assembly House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, has denied the speculation that a plot is being hatched to impeach the Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu.Enwezor said this on Thursday in Awka while speaking to newsmen on the matter shortly after the House plenary. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that since the House reconvened after its break, the Speaker and her deputy, Mr Harsford Oseke, have been conspicuously absent, with the Majority Leader, Mr Victor Okoye, to presiding as Speaker Pro Tempore. Enwezor described the insinuation as false, baseless, unfounded and mischievous. He said that the House Rule 16 and section 19(2) of the constitution was clear on such matter. The House was empowered to elect a member to act as Speaker or deputy in a situation like this, to ensure that the House continued with its legislative functions. There should not be a vacuum because of the absence of any principal officer of the House. That is exactly what we have done and l make bold to tell you that there is no gang up against the Speaker to impeach her.If she is to be impeached, she won’t be Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/09/mrs-rita-maduagwu-can-not-be-impeach-as.html?m=1

The spyware firm tied to an iPhone hack that prompted an emergency patch this week by Apple keeps a very low profile. But the NSO Group has strong ties here as well as in Israel, where it's staffed by specialists from Israel's military cyber division. One of its recent owners, U.S. private equity firm Francisco Partners, operates from an office complex in San Francisco's leafy Presidio district that's also home to Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic. In Herzelia, an area of near Tel Aviv with a thriving tech culture, NSO was founded by Shalev Hulio and Omri Lavie in 2009, according to HulioandLavie's LinkedIn pages. Several of its employees previously worked for United 8200, the Israeli Army's cyber division, which is known to produce spying software. The tech company's background, pieced together from industry reports, reflects the growing boom in cybersecurity firms that operate in a nebulous area: creating software and processes that break into encrypted devices for government entities. NSO is described itself as "a leader in the field of Cyber warfare," according to an apparent company brochure posted online by Privacy International. The company uses "a powerful and unique monitoring tool, called Pegasus, which allows remote and stealth monitoring and full data extraction from remote target devices via untraceable commands," says the brochure. While these hacks can be legal under the laws of the country buying the product, they raise severe privacy worries from consumer groups. They also highlight concerns that increasingly rigorous encryption from Apple and other consumer tech companies is vulnerable to attacks funded by deep-pocked entities. “What most people don’t understand about espionage these days is just how dramatically sophisticated the technologies to conduct this kind of intelligence gathering have become," said Michael McFaul, director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Cybersecurity firms that can thwart encryption shot into the spotlight earlier this year when the FBI hired an unnamed private contractor to help it hack into the contents of the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. The successful hack allowed the U.S. government to shelve a contentious fight with Apple, which did not want to provide a software override to its mobile operating system. The NSO Group is rare “because it’s one company that’s gotten caught,” said Eva Galperin, a global policy analyst with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group in San Francisco. "There’s still a lot of light to be shed on this world,” she said. Suspicious text Its involvement, according to researchers who published findings on the spyware and notified Apple, was traced to the software's coding. Ahmed Mansoor, a prominent human rights activist in the United Arab Emirates, told University of Toronto's Citizen Lab he was sent a suspicious SMS link. Working with mobile security firm Lookout, Citizen Lab said the link carried a powerful, rare form of spyware that could have cost as much as $1 million. If Mansoor had clicked on it, it would have given the sender the ability to control his phone's camera and microphone, track his movements and rifle through all his apps, files and contacts, they said. NSO Group spokesman Zamir Dahbash, reached by email, would not confirm or deny involvement in the Mansoor spyware. He said: “NSO’s mission is to help make the world a safer place, by providing authorized governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime." Apple said it immediately fixed the vulnerability upon learning of it. On Thursday it advised customers to download the latest version of its iOS, version 9.3.5, for security protection. A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Soludo, has said that the current slide in oil price was an opportunity for the nation to explore other vital sectors of the economy. He said, “every disappointment is a blessing and I see the drop in the price of oil as a great opportunity for the country to discover and harness its rich potential.’’Soludo stated this at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the creation of Delta on Friday in Asaba. He said that though Nigeria was under excruciating pains, there was hope for the citizenry.Soludo, who is currently the President of African Heritage Institution, Enugu, warned that “the country cannot have competitive economy when there are political and security challenges.’According to him, the rate of poverty is high, militancy and kidnapping is on the increase while the current recession faced by the country is self-inflicting.While commending the Federal Government for fixing the exchange rate, he noted that the parallel market rate was over-shooting the market. The former apex governor warned that if the exchange rate continued to overshoot, it would scare investors from coming to invest in the country. He advised the Read full details at http://www.akelicious.com/2016/08/charles-soludoevery-disappointment-is.html?m=1
