Defections: Politicians taking Nigerians for a ride -Okotie-Eboh Mr. Emmanuel Okotie-Eboh is the son of First Republic politician and Finance Minister, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh. In this exclusive interview with our South-south Regional Editor, Shola O’Neil, the TV producer and founder of apolitical Progressive Alliance Movement (PAM) speaks on the performance of APC-led Federal Government, killings and Tuesday’s mass defection from the ruling party, among other issues. Excerpts ON problems of killings and national unrest Recently, I read a publication made in a national daily it was a communiqué, which touches on insecurity and killings in Nigeria. The communiqué, signed by some prominent Nigerians on behalf of PANDEF, Northern Elders Forum, Afenifere Socio-Cultural Group and Ohaneze Ndigbo, appraised the security challenges and poverty in the country. While I salute their courage in this regard, I differ on one of their resolves, which amongst others is “to insist on the emergence of a visionary and dynamic leadership which will effectively deal with our security and economic challenges, and ensure good governance in the country.” Before you ask why I differ, let me quickly explain – without any regret – that it is unfair to say that a government that has the likes of Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Vice President Osinbajo (SAN) among other young and vibrant Nigerians who have excelled in their various fields and politics, is a visionless government. This is more so when the people who are asserting this were around corridors of power at one time or the other and similar things happened during those era which they never spoke out against or addressed. None of these people cared enough to criticize the government of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan during his six-year reign at a time when Boko Haram was annexing parts of our Federal Republic, carrying our carnages and wanton destruction of lives and properties were on the increase on daily basis. Then, where were these people who are now making such statements? You cannot help but to read political tone to what they are saying. It is not every matter that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should be held responsible for. For instance, the killing of a PDP Chairman in Lagos and the alleged attack on the life of Senator Dino Melaye, should they be linked to President Muhammadu Buhari? Issues of Boko Haram and herdsmen killings are creations of some individuals in Nigeria who want to score cheap political points by using it as a campaign instrument. I don’t think I would have reacted if people like Generals Yakubu Gowon, David Ejoor, TY Danjuma, Abdusalami Abubakar and their likes were behind that statement; the reason being that they are not in the political arena but they are leaders who have managed to stay away from partisan politics. I also would not have reacted if they had done this during the past governments. I don’t believe that we have any bad tribe or religion. It is the individuals who are bad and politically tendered. Criticism that Nigerians are worse off under the present government The state of Nigerian roads prior to the emergence of this administration was nothing to compare to now. The East-West Road, Lokoja-Abuja, Ibadan-Oyo; Benin-Ore, Oshodi-Apapa, Lagos-Ibadan, etc., have been re-constructed to aid smooth travelling thereby creating security on the highways. There are some states which have been under the reign of governance by a political party from 1999 till date, people are still saying that the governor of the states have not done enough for the people, not to mention a party that just came on board in less than four years. There is no magic in governance; we all know that human beings are the most difficult to lead. Take for example the mass exodus of companies from Warri that has turned Warri to a ghost town; was it caused by Buhari? In fact it was during the era of President Olusegun Obasanjo, but the individuals in the political space of Delta State in collaboration with other supporters brought about the hunger and the rains of destructions that have driven Shell and their likes out of Warri. These were the handiwork of some political undertakers. Yar’Adua cannot be fully assessed, as his reign was short-lived. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, with the opportunities and goodwill he had, would have done better if he had not surrounded himself with sycophants, who would not tell him when he erred and advised him against future occurrence by telling him the truth when the need arose. It is my humble suggestion that if the elder statesmen see anything wrong with the way the country is being run, they should make arrangements to inform the President on the lapses and give him suggestions to correct them. Also, the President should open a line/desk office where such complaints can be received and attended to by qualified persons who should in turn brief the President. On the role of ‘elders/leaders’ in nation’s politics The elders/political leaders should also use merit in choosing and adopting persons they allow to represent them for elective/appointment positions. People of questionable characters should not be presented. It will help in shaping the future of the country if round pegs are put in round holes and not the other way round. The bane of Nigeria is greed, lies, desperation for power by individuals who are the followers including, aides who abuse their delegated duties. We have to change our dance steps for a better Nigeria. The blame goes to us all, to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done; if not, restructuring alone cannot bring peace. First, we have to restructure our ways of doing things. Charity must begin at home. On Tuesday’s cross-carpeting at the NASS I have said it severally, the problem of this great country, Nigeria, is not APC or PDP; it is the problem of lack of political ideology and integrity by the current crop of politicians. That is the big difference from the days of the First Republic, NPN, UPN and others. It is a shame that people now see political parties as a vehicle to their selfish gains. Yesterday, it was the APC that they were jumping into in droves, today it is the same party that they are leaving and returning to the PDP that they jumped from on the eve of the 2015 elections. They castigated the PDP, insulted the leaders that are now receiving them all because of their quest for power. This is very shameful, considering that our children are seeing all these things on television and they are reading about it in the papers. This is no longer politics; this is opportunism and a few people taking the Nigerian nation and the larger percentage of the people for a ride. What we are seeing now is, if you don’t get what you want today, you jump to another party. The defectors have been there from the beginning; most of them were with Goodluck Jonathan and now they have gone back to the same PDP they derided and castigated. They are dogs eating their own vomits. If they have any modicum of shame, they would know that this is shameful. Sadly, Nigerians are gullible; the villains of yesterday are today’s saints. We must know that the President cannot solve all the problems in three years. The people, who cannot get what they want from the present dispensation, are deceiving Nigerians, encouraging the killings and destabilisation of the country. They have all jumped somewhere and destroyed were they are leaving behind in their attempt to destroy the President, not minding if they destroy the country in the process. How do this and other political events affect the peace and security of Nigeria? This do-or-die politics is heating up the polity. With what they are doing now, they are encouraging the killings and insecurity in the country. The action is not encouraging; if we are looking for peace, how do we achieve that when all the attention is diverted to the drama of these men and women who should be setting the pace. In the past, politics was for the wise and cunny, but today, it is for the wicked and the greedy. http://thenationonlineng.net/defections-politicians-taking-nigerians-for-a-ride-okotie-eboh/ |
maestroferddi:...yet in Kano, the speaker who is in Kwakwanso camp has just been removed while u are making empty noise here...read below to know Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said on Monday that he had no knowledge of what happened at the state’s assembly not until he was informed via telephone calls by top members of his party that the speaker of the house, Rt Honorable Ata has been removed by members of the house. Ganduje who described the episode as an internal democracy said that, such development is good for any progressive democracy. The Governor made the assertion at the kano state government House when the new speaker, Honorable Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and his principal officers paid a courtesy visit during which they pledged their loyalty to him. They further reaffirmed their unflinching support for his administration and reelection bid. According Ganduje, “I was not aware of what was going on at the state assembly; I was informed by top members of our great party that the speaker of the house has been impeached by the members of the house. “As you know, there has been, and they would be different interpretations to what has happened, but one thing is certain, that is, we in Kano believe in internal democracy” “I urge you to embrace all those whom have lost their seats and ensure that there are no factions within the assembly members. “I welcome you to the state government House, your house, and I want to reassure you that there shall be synergy between the state government and the assembly for the greater development of the state” “For eight years I was the deputy governor, and we have been together with virtually all of you for the past sixteen years, so am familiar with the antics of the assembly and issues of internal democracy” “I’m happy to hear that you are solidly behind the party in the state, National level and the president particularly at this moment of trial” In his remarks, the Speaker, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum expressed their loyalty to the Ganduje’s administration and reaffirmed that, the assembly members would continue to work with the Governor for the peace and progress of the state. Rurum assures the Governor that, there shall be no defection by members of the house as efforts are been made to win over the six Kwankwansiyya loyalists to their fold. He further reiterated their loyalty and support for the Ganduje’s second term ambition as well as that of the president Muhammadu Buhari and also pledge their loyalty to APC and its National Chairman, Adam Oshiomhole. Johnnyessence:Kano State Governor Abdullàhi Ganduje has dismissed his predecessor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, as a spent force. He said the Senator of Kano Central has lost political relevance with his recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 13 other senators and 36 House of Representatives members. The governor said the defection of Kwankwaso and others would not affect the chances and fortunes of APC in any way. Addressing reporters yesterday in his office, Ganduje stated he was not personally bothered by the exit of his political rival. He said: “We are not scared by their exit. Their defection doesn’t constitute any havoc to our great party, the APC, at all levels. People should keep eyes (open) to what will happen during election. “Our dear President has been doing the needful in terms of developing the nation, coupled with his efforts in efficient service delivery. Good governance is at its peak. The war against corruption is successfully being waged.” He added Kwankwaso’s exit will not be felt in the state: “I want you to go and study the situation on ground in Kano. “His (Kwankwaso) defection does not change the political mood in the state. Nobody cares to be disturbed by their actions.” The governor said when his predecessor was in the APC “his intention was to vie for presidency. But when it appeared to him, in black and white, that there is no vacancy in the Villa, he now decided to leave on his own.” He said Kwankwaso should be ready to battle it out at the polls next year. “When he secures a presidential ticket from the party he cross carpets to, then he should wait and see how we can slug it out with him. He will fully understand how popular and loveable our President Muhammadu Buhari is. “Kano will give more votes to our President, than what he got in 2015 election. “From the 2015 election to date, those who could not vote because of age limit, are now grown up, meaning they will now be eligible to vote. “Hence, Buhari stands the chance to get five million votes from Kano,” Ganduje boasted THE NATION |

WHAT KIND OF SUMMER SCHOOL DID YOUR CHILD ATTEND LAST YEAR? TWO-A-PENNY SUMMER SCHOOLS A-PLENTY! Recent investigations have revealed that parents who registered their children at many so-called summer schools in Lagos at dirty cheap prices did get themselves taken to the cleaners after all. We have found that many of these emergency schools are not worth a kobo of fees parents pay. They only play on the anxiety of parents to get their children doing something constructive while they are at work. During our investigations, we discovered that many of the proprietors/proprietresses of these schools had no genuine plans for vocational programs, which should be the focus of a holiday school. Emphasis is not placed on intelligence – developing games, life skills or obvious self- actualization programs. There were no plans for tutorials on academic related needs such as how to make appropriate use of libraries, study skills and examination techniques. Some of them even closed as early as 11.00 am each day which makes us wonder why they made students leave their homes in the first place. We have classified some of these schools from the comical to the wacky and from the patently absurd to the ‘Bubble Trouble, Double Rubble’! BUT WHAT SHOULD A SUMMER SCHOOL PROVIDE ITS STUDENTS? 1. The goal of a holiday school should be to challenge, amuse and provoke students into seeing, thinking and acting in many usual and unusual recreational ways. 2. It should stimulate and refresh students during the period by combining academic and co-curricular activities in a unique environment capable of creating and bonding friendship by students from all parts of Nigeria. To do this we hereby submit a check list of programs a summer school might provide apart from taking students on trips to London, Paris, Nairobi or Johannesburg! ACADEMIC-RELATED 1.Few subject lectures Including English Language, Maths and science subjects such as Integrated Science, Intro Tech ,Chemistry, Physics. This should be backed up with practicals and at least a test at the end of the holiday school whose results should be submitted to parents in the last week of the holiday school. 2. Students needing remedial work in Maths and English should be made to spend two extra periods (1hr 20 mins) each day from Monday to Thursday with approval from parents after discussion with holiday school management. 3. Specific tutorials on Microsoft Office packages especially WORD. This should be combined with internet/e-mail training, social networks and the need to be very careful while browsing. 4. Oral English/Oral French 5. Lectures on “Moral Instructions”, Famous Peoples, Quotations and Places. Also they should be guided on how to speak confidently in the public. CO-CURRICULAR-RELATED 1. Ball Games such as basketball, football, volleyball, lawn and table tennis etc. 2. Indoor Games such as chess, scrabble, monopoly, ayo, snake and ladder, ludo, etc. 3. Educational or brain games from video or the computer. 4. Educational Film shows on Shakespeare, People and Places etc. Nollywood and Hollywood movies should not be excluded if they have themes related to moral instructions for students or their tutors. 5. Playing of musical instruments, voice training by Karaoke . 6. First-aid training/”Handling emergencies at home” sessions 7. Drama/Choral singing/Pop singing/Local and international dances. 8. Quiz/Debating competitions. 9. Horticultural & Gardening/Poultry Keeping lessons 10. Cooking and Baking competitions 11. Arts, Crafts, Beads-making, Carpentry works tutorials 12. Body Exercises and “Man o War” sessions 13. Lessons /Games/Drama on Savings and Personal finance 14. Lessons on Community spirit and work 15. External-based activities such as excursions to the National Stadium and National Museum, National Arts Theatre, visits to Badagry beach or beaches along the Victoria Island/Lekki axis, French Course at French Village in Badagry with a short visit to Cotonou, Leadership Training at the Sea School, Swimming sessions at an international hotel nearby .
