Travel / Iran Plane Crash: All 66 People On Board Feared Dead by edward1984(m): 12:42pm On Feb 18, 2018
Sixty-six people are feared to have been killed in a passenger plane crash in the Zargos mountains in Iran.

The Aseman Airlines plane, en route from Tehran to the south-western city of Yasuj, came down near the city of Semirom in Isfahan province.

The Red Crescent deployed search and rescue teams to the site. The airline retracted a statement saying definitively that all aboard were dead.

Flight EP3704 left Tehran at 04:30 GMT, and crashed about an hour later.

The aircraft came down on Dena Mountain, 22km (14 miles) from Yasuj, news channel Irinn reported.

The plane was a French-Italian-made twin-engine turboprop ATR 72-500.

Sixty passengers, two security guards, two flight attendants and the pilot and co-pilot were on board.

The airline initially said everyone had been killed, but said later: "Given the special circumstances of the region, we still have no access to the spot of the crash and therefore we cannot accurately and definitely confirm the death of all passengers of this plane."

Bad weather had hampered rescue efforts. Emergency teams had to travel to the crash site by land rather than using a helicopter.

Ageing fleet
Iran has suffered several aviation accidents in recent years and has an ageing aircraft fleet.

The country has struggled to obtain spare parts to maintain its planes in the face of international sanctions imposed to curb its nuclear programme.

Those sanctions have been mostly lifted under a 2015 deal between Iran and the US alongside several other powers.

Aseman, Iran's third largest airline, signed a contract with Boeing last year to buy 30 of its latest medium-range 737s.

Travel / Passenger Drops Farts So Putrid Pilot Is Forced To Make Emergency Landing by edward1984(m): 10:20am On Feb 18, 2018
A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a row caused by a passenger who refused to stop farting.

The passenger apparently kept breaking wind on board a Transavia Airlines flight from Dubai to Amsterdam Schiphol last weekend.

The two Dutchmen sitting next to him didn’t take very well to his flatulence, but the unashamed man was apparently not put off and refused to hold back.

Members of the crew on the Dutch low-cost airline were apparently less than sympathetic and refused to do anything about it.

Despite a warning from the pilot, a fight between the men then broke out, causing the flight to be diverted to Vienna Airport .

Police boarded the plane with dogs and removed two sisters and the two men after the pilot made a report about ‘passengers on the rampage’.

The women are now taking the Dutch budget airline to court after being removed from the flight, and claim they have done nothing wrong.

Nora Lacchab, 25, a law student from Rotterdam, and her unnamed sister, say being removed was ‘humiliating’ are now seeking to legal action.

The two women, who are of Dutch and Moroccan descent, were returning to Amsterdam after a week holidaying in Dubai.

Nora told De Telegraaf: ‘We had nothing to do with the whole disturbance. We distance ourselves from that.

‘Do they sometimes think that all Moroccans cause problems? That’s why we do not let it sit.

‘We had no idea who these boys were, we just had the bad luck to be in the same row and we didn’t do anything. All I will say is that the crew were really provocative and stirred things up.’

All four passengers have since been released, and were not arrested as they had not broken an Austrian laws.

However, they have all been banned from Transavia Airlines, who say that the two girls were also involved in the fight.

In a statement they said: ‘Our crew must ensure a safe flight. When passengers pose risks, they immediately intervene. Our people are trained for that.

‘They know very well where the boundaries are. Transavia is therefore square behind the cabin crew and the pilots.’

Crime / Pakistan Court Sentences Man To Death For Rape And Murder Of Girl, 7 by edward1984(m): 7:10pm On Feb 17, 2018
Imran Ali, 24, convicted over death of Zainab Ansari, has also been linked to death of seven other girls

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced a suspected serial killer to death for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, a prosecutor said.

The girl’s murder ignited nationwide protests over allegations of government inaction, and a media campaign led to his arrest after years of him being on the loose.

Police found Zainab Ansari’s body on a rubbish dump in Kasur district near the eastern city of Lahore in mid-January, four days after she was reported missing.

Residents of the area have said the murder was the 12th such incident in a year. Police investigators said later that they had matched DNA from eight girls’ bodies, including Zainab’s, with the convicted killer, Imran Ali, 24.

“The court handed down death on four counts and life imprisonment to Imran Ali in the rape and murder of the little girl, Zainab,” government prosecutor Ehtisham Qadir Shah told Reuters.

He said Ali will be tried for rest of the cases later.

Hundreds of residents protested after Zainab’s body was found, and two were killed when police fired shots to disperse them.

Police identified Ali as one of Zainab’s neighbours, and CCTV footage on the day she was abducted showed her walking off calmly with a man.

In the same district, Kasur, there have been complaints of a number of missing children since 2015 when authorities uncovered what they said was a paedophile ring linked to a prominent local family.

At least two people have been convicted in connection with that case, in which authorities say hundreds of children in the district were abused.

Nearly 10 cases of child abuse a day are reported in Pakistan, according to Sahil, an organisation that works on child protection.

Zainab’s case has triggered a debate in Pakistan over whether to teach children how to guard against sex abuse, which otherwise is a taboo subject in the Muslim majority nation.

Crime / Woman Buried Alive For 11 Days Tried To Fight Her Way Out Of Her Coffin by edward1984(m): 11:08am On Feb 17, 2018
A woman was reportedly buried alive and left to lay conscious inside her coffin for eleven days.

Her family smashed open the stone tomb after locals heard screams coming from the grave, but it was sadly too late.

By the time they had prised open the wooden casket, which had been nailed shut, Rosangela Almeida dos Santos, 37, was dead. From the state of the coffin, it appears she had desperately tried to fight her way out. A video has emerged showing the commotion in the Senhora Santana cemetery in Riachao das Neves, northeast Brazil, as some men took out the heavy coffin and removed the lid.

People shout for an ambulance as others touch her and say how warm she feels. Ms Santos was declared dead by a hospital on January 28 and was buried the next day.

People living near to the cemetery alerted her family on February 9, 11 days after she had been laid to rest. She had suffered injuries on her hands and forehead where it appeared she had tried to fight her way out. The nails around the sides of the coffin lid had also been pushed upwards, and there were scratches and blood on the inside, reports claim.

Ms Santos, who was married but didn’t have children, had been in hospital for a week after being rushed there by her family with severe fatigue. She went into cardiac arrest before dying from ‘septic shock’, according to her death certificate.

Her family buried her in a concrete tomb at the municipal cemetery in her home town of Riachao das Neves, the following day. Local resident Natalina Silva told Brazil’s G1 website that many people heard muffled screams coming from the grave. She said: ‘When I got there right in front of the tomb, I heard banging from inside it.

‘I thought the kids who play around the cemetery were playing a joke on me. Then I heard her groan twice, and after those two groans she stopped.’ Ms Santos’ mother, Germana de Almeida, 66, said: ‘She had tried to open the lid, even the nails that had been hammered in were loose.

‘Her hands were injured, like she had been trying to get out.’ The family believe she was declared dead in error. Ms Santos’ sister, Isamara Almeida, said: ‘We don’t want to accuse any doctor, we don’t want to cause any problems.

‘But we witnessed that situation, there’s just no way a person can be buried for 11 days and still be warm.’ Police chief Arnaldo Monte, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘We have today started to take statements from family members and other people. ‘If need be we will exhume Ms Santos’ body again so we can get to the bottom of what really happened.’ A spokesman for the hospital that declared her dead said they ‘will provide all necessary information requested from them to the family and authorities’.

Romance / Tesco Manager Filmed In Sex Act With Teenage Employee by edward1984(m): 10:20am On Feb 17, 2018
A Tesco manager and teenage employee were forced to quit their jobs this week after being caught romping in a back office.

Fresh produce manager Neville Fox, 35, and Caitlyn Kirby, 19, were filmed engaging in a sex act through the window of a staff room.

A group of men outside recorded the incident, and posted it to social media.

This resulted in both Fox and Kirby being ‘escorted’ from the premises in Norwich on Saturday.

The teenager claims the 35-year-old told her he had split from his long-term partner – a 54-year-old manager at the same branch.

However this was later found to be untrue.

Speaking to The Sun, Mr Fox, who has now left the company, said: ‘I’m not going to say anything. I’m not going to comment.

Tesco’s will comment as they see fit and that’s where we stand on it. It’s not true I’ve been sacked. I’m not going to say anything else.’

Miss Kirby, however, spoke out about the incident – saying her family have dubbed her the ‘Kim Kardashian of Norwich’.

She said she was ‘so embarrassed’ and wanted to flee to Brazil to escape the video, which has since gone viral.

She said: ‘It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, a moment of total madness. He’s quite a bit older than me so maybe he should have known better but so should I. The person I feel really awful for is Neville’s partner. She must be mortified about it all.’

Tesco said: ‘We are taking this issue very seriously and launched an immediate investigation.’

Entertainment / Lunar New Year: Chinese TV Gala Includes 'racist Blackface' Sketch by edward1984(m): 2:10pm On Feb 16, 2018
A skit on China's biggest Lunar New Year TV show has sparked widespread criticism and accusations of racism.

In a comedy routine celebrating Chinese-African ties an Asian actress appears in blackface and with exaggerated buttocks.
Using make-up to lampoon black people - a practice known as blackface - is seen by many as deeply offensive.
The annual state media variety show is hugely popular, and has up to 800 million viewers.
Some observers have pointed out that this sketch would not have been intended as offensive to Africans.
However, this is not the first time Chinese entertainment shows have caused controversy with their portrayals of other ethnicities.

The controversial sketch was part of the four-hour CCTV New Year Gala - also known as the Spring Festival Gala - which aired on Thursday night. By some estimates, the show is the most watched entertainment programme on earth.
The skit begins with a routine by a group of African dancers in "tribal" attire and people dressed up as zebras, giraffes, lions and antelopes. This is followed by a comedy skit where a young black woman asks a Chinese man to pose as her husband when meeting her mother.
While the young woman is played by a black actor, her mother appears to be an Asian actor in blackface make-up, donning a traditional outfit complete with huge fake buttocks.
She walks on stage carrying a fruit plate on her head and is accompanied by what is thought to be have been a black actor in a monkey suit, carrying a basket on his back

The skit praises Chinese-African cooperation, showing how much Africans benefit from Chinese investment and how grateful they are to Beijing. At one stage, the character of the African mother exclaims how much she loves China.
China has over the past years stepped up investment into many African countries. The sketch was set around people working on the Nairobi-Mombasa railway project.

Europe's racist history

The notion of blackface being racist is linked to the history of minstrel shows in the US and Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries where white actors would paint their skin black for condescending portrayals of black people.
In China, the vast majority of people have no experience of interacting with black people and are less aware of Europe's and the US' history of slavery and racism.

Nonetheless, Chinese users on the country's biggest social media website Weibo have condemned the programme.
Comments included "it's full of racism," that "it makes me feel like I'm living in the last century," and that "we are going to lose face internationally".
Putting it into a larger context beyond the specific history of blackface, one user asks "if an American white person painted yellow, says I love the USA and recites some Trump quotes while pulling his eyes, how would you feel?"
Some Chinese articles criticising the annual gala on the eve of Lunar New Year, China's biggest holiday, have been blocked overnight, as have some critical comments on Chinese social media sites.
In 2016, a TV advertisement for a laundry detergent had caused widespread outrage for being racist.
The ad featured a black man with paint stains on his face who gets put into a washing machine by a young Chinese woman to later re-emerge as a fair-skinned Chinese man.

Crime / Police Officer Fired For Not Shooting Black Suspect Wins $175,000 by edward1984(m): 3:11pm On Feb 13, 2018
A former police officer who alleged he was fired for not shooting a black suspect during a standoff has settled a wrongful termination suit with his former department for $175,000.

“At the end of the day, I’m happy to put this chapter of my life to bed,” said Stephen Mader, a former officer in Weirton, West Virginia, who was also granted a pledge that his former employer would not prevent him from obtaining a new job in law enforcement elsewhere.

Mader was the first responding officer to a 2016 call involving RJ Williams, a 23-year-old black man believed to be suicidal. Mader, who is white, made the determination that Williams did not pose an immediate threat to him or fellow officers, even though he was holding a gun. Mader began trying to talk Williams down.

“He wasn’t angry,” Mader previously told the Guardian. “He wasn’t aggressive, he didn’t seem in position to want to use a gun against anybody. He never pointed it at me. I didn’t perceive him as an imminent threat.”

But amid Mader’s attempts to convince Williams to drop the weapon, two veteran officers arrived on the scene and, almost immediately, shot and killed Williams.

Mader, an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran, received a termination letter 10 days later, which claimed that he failed to respond to the threat. “The unfortunate reality of police work is that making any decision is better than making no decision at all,” it read.

Mader disagreed and filed a suit alleging wrongful termination. “No police officer should ever lose their job – or have their name dragged through the mud – for choosing to talk to, rather than shoot a fellow citizen,” Mader’s attorney Timothy O’Brien said after the settlement.

After the suit was filed, the city argued that Mader was actually terminated for two other prior incidents, and not for holding fire against Williams. This claim did not square with termination letter, however, which directly and repeatedly chastised Mader for not shooting.

The city said in a statement that the decision to settle was a call made by its insurance provider, and that it stood by its decision to fire Mader.

Foreign Affairs / Russian Fighter Jet Shot Down In Syria's Idlib Province by edward1984(m): 6:53pm On Feb 03, 2018
A Russian Sukhoi-25 fighter jet has been shot down in a rebel-held area in Syria's north-western province of Idlib.

The Russian defence ministry said the pilot had ejected but was killed in a ground fight.

Video posted on social media appeared to show the plane being hit, while other video showed burning wreckage on the ground, with a red star on a wing.

Russia has acted alongside its Syrian allies targeting rebels in the area.

Syrian government troops launched a major offensive around Idlib in late December, backed by Russian jets. The UN says some 100,000 civilians have been displaced .

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said there had been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours.

Russia's defence ministry said the pilot had survived the crash but was killed by "terrorists" on the ground. It said it was making all possible efforts to retrieve the body.

There are several reports that Russia has now fired cruise missiles into Idlib province from navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

It is not yet known which group shot the plane down. One social media video posting showed a body said to be that of the pilot.

However, the Russian defence ministry said the plane had come down in an area controlled by the al-Qaeda linked jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.

Foreign Affairs / Israel Will Pay Civilians $9,000 To Capture African Migrants by edward1984(m): 9:40am On Jan 28, 2018
Israel is hiring civilian “immigration inspectors” to crack down on “illegal aliens and their employers,” marking a turning point in the Middle Eastern nation’s relationship with migrants and refugees.

In an advertisement this month, the Population and Immigration Authority said it would pay up to 30,000 Israeli shekels ($8,845) for civilians to carry out an “enterprise of national importance.” That included undertaking “enforcement tasks” against migrants that involved detecting, investigating, and arresting them. Candidates are expected to start in March 2018, a month before the country starts its designated “voluntary” process to return migrants to their country of origin or a third one.

The move comes a few weeks after Israel said it would help purchase tickets, obtain travel documents, and give $3,500 to African illegal migrants to leave—threatening them with arrest if they are caught after the end of March.

The United Nations refugee agency estimates that there are 27,000 Eritreans and 7,700 Sudanese in Israel, with the vast majority of them saying
they fled war, persecution, and conscription. However, Israeli officials have called them “infiltrators” and a “cancer” who are in search of economic opportunities, and who constitute a threat to Israel’s social fabric and Jewish identity. As such, only 10 Eritreans and one Sudanese have been recognized as refugees in the country since 2009, according to UNHCR. Another 200 Sudanese from Darfur have also been granted humanitarian status.

The government’s plan to return the refugees has drawn criticism from human rights advocates both in and outside the country. Nearly 500 academics and 35 prominent Israeli writers have called on prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to deport the asylum seekers, saying the country has “no refugee problem and has no economic difficulty taking them in, settling them and directing them to jobs.” Hundreds of rabbis have also promised to hide refugees, campaigning under the name of Anne Frank, the Holocaust victim who hid in an attic apartment in Amsterdam with her family before she was captured and killed.

The UN has also warned that people who were returned could risk their lives by taking dangerous onward journeys to Europe. Israel was accused of making deals with African countries including Rwanda and Uganda as a place to deport the refugees—but both countries recently denied there was any deal. Rwanda’s government said that its policy towards Africans “wherever they may originate from” was to have “open doors.”

Travel / Dead Woman 'gives Birth' To Stillborn Baby 10 Days After She Died by edward1984(m): 7:24pm On Jan 19, 2018
Staff at the funeral parlour discovered the baby in the 33-year-old mother's coffin on the eve of her funeral

A woman who was nine months pregnant when she died suddenly reportedly 'gave birth' to the baby ten days later.

Staff at the funeral parlour discovered the stillborn child in the 33-year-old mother's coffin.

The baby was found next to mum-of-five Nomveliso Nomasonto Mdoyi‚ from Mthayisi village in South Africa, on the eve of her funeral.

Lindokuhle Funeral parlour owner Fundile Makalana told Times Live : "We were so shocked and frightened that we did not even have time to look at the sex of the baby.

"I have been in the business for more than 20 years and I have never heard of a dead woman giving birth."

Both the infant and the mother were buried in one big coffin on Saturday, the paper reported.

The family say the grim discovery was devastating and shocking.

Nomveliso's mum, Mandzala Mdoyi said her daughter died suddenly after having 'breathing problems'.

"I was devastated by the untimely death of my daughter and now I got the shock of my life to learn that she has given birth while she had been dead for 10 days," she said.

Medical experts told local media that it was possible that the foetus was expelled from the mum's body by a build of gases.

The deterioration of muscles after death may also have contributed, a doctor said.

Travel / Cape Town Could Become First Major City In World To Run Out Of Water After 90-da by edward1984(m): 10:47am On Jan 18, 2018
Cape Town may become the first large city in the world to run out of water, as officials warn there are fewer than 90 days left before the supply runs dry.

The city’s mayor Patricia De Lille said residents had until 22 April until “day zero”, when authorities have estimated the water supply will be finished if residents do not scale back their usage.

As a result, officials have introduced strict measures to limit the consumption of available water, including capping usage at 87 litres per person per day.

The crisis is the result of three years of low rainfall and drought, coupled with a growing population and an increase in water consumption.

Storage levels in dams serving the coastal South African city dropped to below 30 per cent, but once the dams reach 13.5 per cent capacity the municipal water supply will be turned off for all but essential services, such as supplies to hospitals.

If the taps are turned off, residents will be required to travel to one of the 200 municipal water points across the city to collect a maximum ration of 25 litres per day.

In response to the dwindling water supplies, authorities have imposed severe restrictions.

Cape Town’s four million residents have been told to keep their showers under two minutes and have been banned from watering gardens, washing cars and filling swimming pools.

People have also been told to recycle bathwater and limit their usage of washing machines.

Speaking to South Africa’s Times, the head of Cape Town’s water and sanitation department Peter Flower said the prospect of the water supply running out was “terrifying”.

“Residential customers remain the largest portion of water users. If we can bring consumption down to 500 million litres per day‚ we will be able to avoid day zero‚” he said.

Cape Town authorities are trying to top up water levels in the city’s surrounding dams using techniques such as drilling into aquifers, recycling wastewater and the desalination of seawater.

Education / Apps For Learning Foreign Languages by edward1984(m): 4:42pm On Jan 14, 2018
For those who are planning to study in EU, There are countless apps out there designed to help you learn a new language, which makes it tricky to pick the right one. You may want to widen your vocabulary, get some conversation practice in, revise your grammar, or all of the above. Whatever your goal, there’s likely an Android or iOS app for you. Below are a few of our current favorites, so you can pick up the foreign tongue.

1) Duolingo There are plenty of reasons why Duolingo is one of the most popular language apps around — it’s free, well-designed, and accessible. Lesson are broken down into bite-sized chunks and it feels like you’re playing a game.

The app divides languages into different topics, such as clothing or business, but also into adverbs, pronouns, and other grammatical subjects. You must interpret the text and audio, but you can slow down the audio if you’re having trouble understanding it. The app’s answering structure encompasses a wide range of activities, too, meaning you’ll often have to type answers, speak them aloud, and chose from a set of multiple choice answers.

Duolingo is a great introduction, but it can feel like you’re learning a random mix of information, often through repetition. Obviously, the more you do, the more robust your vocabulary will be. It’s great for comprehension purposes, yes, but it may not be the best when it comes to developing your conversational skills. The offline mode is limited, too, so you really need a Wi-Fi or data connection to make the most of Duolingo.

Supported languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Irish, Danish, Swedish, Russian, Ukrainian, Esperanto, Polish and Turkish.

Link.....https://www.duolingo.com

2) Babbel This app is broken down into lessons that last between 10 and 15 minutes apiece. There are packs of lessons that cover different abilities, including those tailored toward both beginners and advanced learners. The app teaches you various words and phrases, and challenges you to spell them out, speak them aloud, and fit them into sentences.

The nice thing with Babbel is that it focuses on conversational learning and it explains grammar rules as you progress. Filling in the gaps in mock conversations is fun and the lessons progress in a logical, traditional manner, starting with basic conversational phrases that you’ll want to master. You can also download lessons to work through them while you’re offline.

The app design is a bit rough around the edges, however, and we found that the software’s voice recognition doesn’t always work the way it’s intended to. Also, though you get one lesson for free with Babbel, you have to pay between $5 and $10 a month if you want get full access to the learning materials for a single language.

Supported languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.

Link.... https://www.babbel.com

3) Tandem Everyone knows that the only way to become fluent in a new language is to speak it. Thankfully, Tandem is geared toward conversations with native speakers. The idea is that you can help one another learn new languages via text, audio, and video chat. The app vets you and then helps you to find a partner who shares your interests. They teach you and you teach them.

Once you agree on a time to chat, you can pick specific topics that serve as conversation prompts, which helps ease the initial awkwardness of talking to a stranger. It’s free if you can find a suitable exchange partner, which is easy for popular languages. You can also pay for a lesson with a professional tutor, if need be.

To sign up, you’ll need to use your Facebook or Google account. There are also moderator checks to ensure that you’re serious about learning, and to weed out those who are abusing the service. This means you might have to wait for your profile to be approved. If you’re ready to move onto the next level with your language and want to speak to a native, then Tandem is worth checking out.

Supported languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and nearly 150 other languages.

4) Memrise If you want to practice and expand your vocabulary, then Memrise is a fun way to do it. The app is set up like a game, one in which you travel to a foreign planet as a spy and you score points for correct answers. It’s a unique way to frame language lessons, and the bulk of the courses consist of memorizing specific words and phrases using mems, which are strange sentences or images.

You can also listen to audio recordings of various words and phrases, and occasionally see video footage of native speakers saying them. The general idea is to learn words and then review them at predetermined intervals, which grow longer as you memorize the words. There’s some science behind the algorithm, but it ultimately amounts to a sophisticated flashcard system. Still, it seems to be very effective for some people.

Memrise primarily functions as a vocabulary builder, so you’ll want to combine it with conversation and grammar lessons, if possible. Some of the mems are odd, too, but bizarre associations and images can be a very effective way to memorize things. You can sign up for the app via email, or use your Google or Facebook account, which grants you access to the wealth of community-created content.

The app’s basic functionality is free, but a subscription ($9 a month) will grant you access to additional games and an offline mode.

Supported languages: French, Spanish, German, English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, and more than 100 other languages.

Business / Mark Zuckerberg Loses $3.3bn From His Personal Fortune After Facebook Newsfeed C by edward1984(m): 11:42am On Jan 14, 2018
Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to change the way Facebook operates people’s news feeds has cost him $3.3bn, with his personal net worth dropping by 4.4 per cent, it is believed.

After Facebook went public with the news feed change on Thursday, the website’s share value dropped by nearly four per cent before US markets opened on Friday.

By close of business on Friday Facebook shares were trading at $179.37, down more than 4.4 per cent on Thursday’s price of $187.77.

And Forbes has calculated that for Mr Zuckerberg, the co-founder, chairman and chief executive of Facebook, this translated into a personal hit of 3.3bn – a 4.4 per cent fall in his personal fortune.

Mr Zuckerberg, 33, who started Facebook in 2004 aged 19, still owns a 17 per stake in the company, which went public in 2012.

He explained his reasons for changing the news feed algorithm in a Facebook post on Thursday, saying he wanted the website to prioritise posts from friends and family over businesses and brands.

“We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us,” he said. “But recently we've gotten feedback that public content – posts from businesses, brands and media – is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.”

“Based on this,” he added, “I'm changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.”

Some, however, have suggested that the change might also have been influenced by Facebook’s alleged desire to counteract what the company is believed to refer to as “context collapse”.

This is the phenomenon where people stop sharing as much information about their personal lives on Facebook, yielding less useful data for the advertisers on whom Facebook relies to make its money.

Tweaking the news feed to encourage people to talk about their personal lives might, therefore, be seen as a means of increasing Facebook’s commercial value.

The markets, though, appear to have reacted badly to the news feed change, at least in the short term.

Some analysts, however, think the tweak will work well for the company in the long term.

Mark Mahaney, an analyst at RBC, told Bloomberg: “Making the feed more relevant should boost user and engagement growth over time.

“We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term.”

Just how much Mr Zuckerberg will worry about the short term drop in his wealth is also unclear.

Given that Facebook shares were trading at around $127 (£92) a this time last year, the company’s value is still up by more than 40 per cent year-on-year, even after this week’s fall.

Despite losing $3.3bn, Mr Zuckerberg is still worth $72.4bn (£52.7bn).

In December 2015 Mr Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan said they were planning to give away 99 per cent of their Facebook shares down the line.
Politics / Donald Trump Must Apologise For Comments - African Union by edward1984(m): 9:14am On Jan 13, 2018
The organisation representing African countries has demanded that US President Donald Trump apologise after he reportedly called nations on the continent "shitholes".

The group's mission in Washington DC expressed its "shock, dismay and outrage" and said the Trump administration misunderstood Africans.

The US leader made the alleged remark in a Thursday meeting on immigration.

But Mr Trump has denied using the language reported.

He has been backed by two Republicans who were at the White House meeting, but Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said Mr Trump called African countries "shitholes" several times and used "racist" language.

On Friday, Mr Trump on Friday tweeted that his language he used at the private meeting with lawmakers to discuss immigration legislation had been "tough".

But he added that the words attributed to him were "not the language used".

What did the African Union say?

It said the "remarks dishonour the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity".

It added: "While expressing our shock, dismay and outrage, the African Union strongly believes that there is a huge misunderstanding of the African continent and its people by the current Administration.

"There is a serious need for dialogue between the US Administration and the African countries."

The pan-African grouping represents 55 member states throughout the continent. It succeeded the Organisation of African Unity - which originated in the decolonisation struggles of the early 1960s - in 2002.

What exactly did Trump say?

The remarks were allegedly made when lawmakers visited him on Thursday to discuss a bipartisan proposal that would impose new restrictions on immigration but protect the so-called "Dreamers" - hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the US illegally as children - from deportation.

Mr Trump was said to have told them that instead of granting temporary residency to citizens of countries hit by natural disasters, war or epidemics, the US should instead be taking in migrants from countries like Norway.

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" the Washington Post quoted him as saying.

Mr Durbin said that when Mr Trump was told that the largest groups of immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) were from El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti, the president responded: "Haitians? Do we need more Haitians?"

But in another tweet on Friday the president denied that he insulted Haitians.

Many US media outlets reported the comments on Thursday, quoting witnesses or people briefed on the meeting. The White House did not deny them.

Business / A 20 Year Old In Florida Won $451M Jackpot by edward1984(m): 7:54am On Jan 13, 2018
A 20-year-old from Florida says he plans to "have some fun" after being named sole winner of a $451m (£330m) lottery jackpot.

Shane Missler matched five numbers and a bonus ball to scoop the fourth largest win in the US game's history.

He opted to receive a one-time payment of $282m, instead of the full amount over a longer period of time.

Mr Missler said he had a feeling he could win on the night of the Mega Millions draw, says a press release.
Minutes after the draw a week ago he posted on Facebook: "Oh. My. God."

Mr Missler presented his winning ticket at the state lottery headquarters in Tallahassee on Friday, accompanied by his father and a lawyer.

He said he has big plans for his winnings.

"I'm only 20, but I hope to use it to pursue a variety of passions, help my family and do some good for humanity," said Mr Missler, according to the statement.

He told the Tampa Bay Times : "I intend to take care of my family, have some fun along the way and cement a path for financial success so that I can leave a legacy far into the future."

His lawyer said his client had "retired" from his job at a company that carried out employment background checks.

Mr Missler bought the winning ticket at a 7-Eleven in his hometown of Port Richey, 40 miles (64km) north of Tampa, using a "Quick Pick" option that selects the numbers randomly.

The winning numbers were 28, 30, 39, 59, and 70 with a "Mega Ball" of 10.

"If there is one thing I have learned thus far in my short time on this earth it is that those who maintain a positive mindset and stay true to themselves get rewarded," Mr Missler said.

"I look forward to the future."

The west are just crazy. Makes absolutely no sense to give all what a man worked all his life to his wife following a divorce. There is no logic in that.

This is exactly what the feminists want. Superiority over men. A system that favors them in ramifications.

They are not crazy, there is always a solution to every problem, In this case it's called PRENUP

If you believe in true love then marry without a prenuptial agreement, then face the consequence later
