PoliticsDon’t Pass Tinubu’s Proposed 2025 Budget, It’s Anti-People – PDP Tells NASS by Edygrin(op): 8:59am On Dec 19, 2024
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged the National Assembly not to pass the proposed 2025 appropriation bill, describing it as anti-people.

The party said that if the proposed budget is implemented as presented it will plunge the nation deeper into the abyss of insecurity, poverty and hopelessness.

Debo Ologunagba, the spokesperson of the PDP, in a statement on Wednesday said the president’s budget address was like “campaign rhetoric laced with unsubstantiated economic statistics”.

DAILY POST reported that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday presented a national budget of N47.96 trillion for 2025 to the joint session of lawmakers in the National Assembly.

Tinubu said that the budget would trigger the prosperity of Nigerians in 2025 if implemented to the letter, adding that it would restore and consolidate on key policies of the government.

However, Ologunagba said that the budget “made no meaningful provisions” for “real drivers of the national economy”.

The PDP states that the budget address sounded more like a campaign rhetoric laced with unsubstantiated economic statistics, false promises and conjured performance claims without clear-cut operable steps and mechanisms to address insecurity, resuscitate the economy, revamp ailing industries, shore up food production, increase the value of the Naira, reduce overall cost of living, create jobs for our youths and guarantee better living standard for citizens.

President Tinubu dashed the hope of millions of suffering Nigerians who expected him to use the 2025 budget to make strategic provisions that will lead to the reduction in the cost of fuel, food items, electricity tariff and other essential goods and services that have direct bearing on the wellbeing of the people

The PDP therefore calls on the National Assembly not to pass the 2025 budget as presented but activate its legislative powers as guaranteed under Sections 80, 81 and 82 of the 1999 Constitution to rejig the budget and make provisions that are critical and pivotal to the growth of the economy and the welfare of Nigerians,” part of the statement read.

PoliticsJudges Weaken Fight Against Corruption In Nigeria, Africa - Francis Ben Kaifala by Edygrin(op): 7:47am On Dec 19, 2024
The Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Francis Ben Kaifala, has blamed judges in Nigeria and Africa for the difficulty anti-corruption agencies face in securing convictions in criminal cases.

Kaifala made this statement in Abuja on Tuesday during his address as the keynote speaker at the End of Year Engagement, marking one year in office for the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu.

According to him: “We all know that part of the reason why we are having difficulty succeeding in the fight against corruption is because the judges, who are supposed to be the teeth of the fight against corruption, are not providing enough bite. They give sentences that are minimal; they let go of criminals.”

He asserted: “We will continue to have complications in fighting corruption, and that is because corruption is not made expensive enough.

He added: “We have to support institutions that fight corruption in Africa. We have to support the leaders who fight corruption in Africa.

But most importantly, we have to be daring—very daring—to think outside the box and introduce policies and principles based on common sense, based on the corruption culture in our countries.

Because it works elsewhere does not necessarily mean it will work here, but if we consider the cultures and practices of our respective countries and introduce policies that work, I believe Africa will be ready to confront the 21st century better as a continent, winning in the final discussion.

PoliticsYahaya Bello To Sue Media Over Alleged Comment Against Tinubu by Edygrin(op): 2:12pm On Dec 16, 2024
Former Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has threatened to sue persons behind an online media outlet, Daily Excessive, over an alleged fake report targeted at causing a strained relationship between him and President Bola Tinubu.

The decision to sue the purveyors of the news was made known in a statement signed by Michael Ohiare, the Director, Yahaya Bello Media Office, and a copy made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday evening.

The online platform was alleged to have published a report quoting the former governor to have said, while in court, that he would reveal to the world how President Tinubu became Nigerian president.

Ohiare said the report was not only misleading, “but a confirmation of how unintelligent some unrelenting detractors of the former governor are.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a not only mischievous but absolutely senseless report published by a mushroom blog called Daily Excessive, which attributed fake quotes against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to our principal, the immediate-past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

Ordinarily, we would not have even bothered to give this any attention, considering the fact that no informed Nigerian would take such a ridiculous story seriously, especially since court records are public documents.

This clarification is, however, necessary for the record and for the benefit of social media users who circulate fake news without fact-checking the details.

The report, which is part of the desperate plot by irresponsible politicians to strain the relationship between our President and former Governor Yahaya Bello, is the most laughable twist in their failed bid to execute their bring-him-down-at-all-costs mirage.

Every Nigerian who has been following court proceedings since the former governor submitted himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission knows that trial has not commenced in any of the cases.
“Former Governor Bello has only taken his plea at both courts.

The court is an open place where proceedings are monitored by journalists and other stakeholders.

This is the reason no informed Nigerian would even consider opening this report by an “Excessive fake news purveyor” called Daily Excessive.”

He described the persons behind the news as “mischief makers.

We, however, wish to stress here that even those that the hatchet job executors are trying to confuse know that His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has great respect for the person and office of Mr President and would never make such ridiculous remarks attributed to him against the President.

Alhaji Yahaya Bello will continue to support the President and his party, the All Progressives Congress, despite the misleading picture his detractors are trying so hard to paint.

We have alerted security agencies to unveil the identities of those behind the website that was used in circulating this fake report.

We will ensure that the purveyors of the fake news face the legal consequences of their action,” Ohiare concluded.

PoliticsSupreme Court Imposes N5m On Ex-presidential Candidate For Harassing Tinubu by Edygrin(op): 1:41pm On Dec 16, 2024
The Supreme Court on Monday in Abuja imposed a N5 million fine on a former presidential candidate, Ambrose Albert Owuru, for harassing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a frivolous and vexatious suit.

Owuru, who contested the 2019 presidential election against former President Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP), was ordered to pay the N5 million to Tinubu.

Justice Uwani Musa Aba-Aji issued the order against the former presidential candidate while dismissing his fresh suit praying for the removal of Tinubu as Nigeria’s President.

Apart from the N5 million fine, the apex court ordered its Registry not to accept any frivolous originating summons from Owuru again.

At Monday’s proceedings, Owuru, who claimed to be a lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984, sought to argue his own case wearing his wig and gown.

He was ordered out of the Bar and directed to remove his wig and gown before he could be allowed to argue his case.

Upon complying with the orders, Owuru was asked why he came before the court again, having had his suits dismissed three times.

Although he tried to convince the Apex Court to grant him adequate audience, his explanations were rejected as unconvincing.

Justice Aba-Aji ruled that Owuru’s conduct was unbecoming of a lawyer of over 40 years, as he claimed to be.

In the end, the Court dismissed his suit and ordered him to pay Tinubu N5 million.

It will be recalled that the Court of Appeal had previously imposed a fine of N40 million on Owuru, to be paid to Tinubu, INEC, and others, for filing a suit against them.

The new suit, marked SC/CV/667/2023, prayed the Apex Court to sack Tinubu on two major grounds: alleged non-qualification to hold office as Nigeria’s President and alleged usurpation of the office in contravention of the law.

Defendants in the suit were former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Tinubu as 1st to 4th defendants, respectively.

Owuru, a British-trained lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984, insisted that he won the 2019 presidential election but alleged that his tenure was usurped by Buhari for eight years.

He claimed that his suit at the Supreme Court, which would have removed Buhari from office, was technically jettisoned by the Apex Court due to a mix-up in hearing dates.

He also prayed the Apex Court to disqualify Tinubu on account of the forfeiture of $460,000 to the United States of America over an alleged drug trafficking-related offense.

Besides the alleged forfeiture, Owuru accused Tinubu of being an active agent of the CIA, a position he claimed disqualified Tinubu from holding the office of President of Nigeria.

Specifically, Owuru prayed the Supreme Court to invoke Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution to remove Tinubu from office on the grounds of being under the control of foreign authorities.

He also asked the Supreme Court to declare him Nigeria’s President and order his immediate inauguration to reclaim his alleged usurped mandate.

PoliticsRe: 2027 Presidency: Not About Zones But Credible Candidate – Shekarau by Edygrin(op): 9:47am On Dec 16, 2024
If you tell the north to bring out a credible candidate, they'll bring out Buhari 2.0 but they'll be fighting for power tooth and nail.

If the South were united, the north will only smell power only at the mercy of the south because if you can't even make ur region better how then can you make Nigeria better?
Politics2027 Presidency: Not About Zones But Credible Candidate – Shekarau by Edygrin(op): 9:39am On Dec 16, 2024
A former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that Nigerians should not be bothered about zones but should place priority on credibility ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The debates about power returning to the northern part of the country in 2027 have been going on for a while now.

Just this weekend, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso met with former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

However, there is an argument that the southern region, which produced President Bola Tinubu, is yet to exhaust eight years in office.

Shekarau is, however, of the opinion that the region should not be the focus at this point but credibility.

All the parties should come up with their planning in a situation whereby they make the best of choices.

But for Nigerians now to decide, our concern is ‘Let’s look at the candidates produced by the parties’,” Shekarau said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Our challenge is that all the parties should give Nigerians correct candidates so we have the best to choose from.

But if you give us all evils, we will choose the best from the evils,” the former governor added.

PoliticsWinners’ Chapel Airstrip License Won’t Be Withdrawn – Keyamo by Edygrin(op): 8:00am On Dec 16, 2024
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, says the license given to Living Faith Church, otherwise known as Winners’ Chapel, will not be revoked.

Keyamo made this statement on Sunday on Arise Television’s programme, ‘This Morning’.

DAILY POST recalls that in October, the House of Representatives demanded the withdrawal of licenses granted to the church, other private individuals and organisations to safeguard national security.

According to him, the church had not violated any rules, stressing that it adhered to all legal processes before the airstrip was approved.

You can’t single out an individual in a country like this when you have given the same right to so many people and say withdraw that particular one. On what basis?

The people have not breached any terms upon which we gave them the license. If you single them out, the constitution says you should not discriminate against any Nigerian. They are following the rules.

It took me one year to approve that airstrip because we went through so many processes. By law, I said the minister would approve. That is what the law says. And it came to me. I looked at all the processes. I approved.

You cannot take off from any private airstrip in Nigeria and fly outside the country. This is not possible. You must first land at an international airport.

You will be well-processed and checked before you fly out. If you are flying in, you must first land at an international airport. You will be processed before you fly to your private airstrip,” Keyamo said.

PoliticsLagos, Rivers, FCT, Oyo Earn ₦‎4.18 Trillion VAT In 11 Months by Edygrin(op): 7:45am On Dec 16, 2024
Out of the N5.718 trillion distributable Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue shared by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) between January and November 2024, three states and the FCT earned N4.183 trillion as their share, leaving the remaining 33 states to share the remaining N1.534 trillion.

Based on the current VAT revenue sharing formula, Lagos State gets 42 per cent, meaning that the state alone takes home N2.401 trillion as its share during the period; Rivers State, which takes 16 per cent, got N914.88 billion during the same period, FCT with 10 per cent got N571.8 billion; while Oyo state that takes 5.2 per cent got N297.336 N285.9 billion.

The VAT sharing formula has become a contentious issue in recent times following the introduction of a new tax reform bill, which proposes radical changes to the current sharing formula.

According to the current formula, the Federal Government receives 15 per cent of VAT, states and the FCT take 50 per cent, while local governments take 35 per cent.

Of the 50 per cent meant for the states, each state retains 20 per cent of the VAT collected within its borders as derivation, 30 per cent is distributed based on the states’ population, while the remaining 50 per cent is shared equally among all the states.

According to the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, this sharing formula does not take into account the fact that over 70 per cent of goods and services are consumed outside the head offices of the firms rendering those services or producing those goods but only recognises where VAT is remitted.

The new formula, which it proposes, gives Federal Government 10 per cent of VAT revenue, states and FCT, 55 per cent and local governments 35 per cent.

MEANWHILE, the Independent Media and Policy Initiatives (IMPI) has thrown its weight behind the tax reform bills currently awaiting approval by the National Assembly, hailing it as a bold move to revamp Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking during the organisation’s press conference in Abuja, yesterday, Chairman of IMPI, Omoniyi Akinsiju, emphasised the significance of the proposed legislation, stating that it was crucial for generating revenue, fostering enterprise growth, and enhancing citizens’ purchasing power.

He expressed dismay over what he called ‘unwarranted controversy’ about the reforms, particularly the VAT-sharing formula, calling it a distraction from the transformative benefits of the bills.

PoliticsUK Police Was Once As Flawed As Nigeria’s Force, ASP Tells Kemi Badenoch by Edygrin(op): 1:36pm On Dec 15, 2024
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Zyad Ibn Isah, says the UK Metropolitan Police is far from being perfect despite rising from its messy state in the ’80s.

Isah’s comments came on the heels of recent derogatory comments aimed at the Nigerian Police by UK Conservative Party member Kemi Badenoch, who accused the force of corruption and harassment.

Speaking on his social media account on Sunday, Isah maintained that the UK police had its fair share of a bad image in the ’80s before the introduction of David Rose’s reforms.

I would recommend David Rose’s ‘In the Name of the Law’ to Kemi Badenoch. The truth is the London Metropolitan Police was a mess in the 1960s, 1970s, and even the 1980s.

It was through various reforms and even a change of name that they became what they are today. If the questioner had asked a British citizen in the 1960s or 1970s whether they trusted the British police, I doubt they would have said yes.

The situation was that bad. Nigeria and its police force are not perfect—we know that. But we will rise from the ashes, just like the UK and its police force. Aunty Kemi should enjoy her new pastime of denigrating her fatherland while it lasts,” said the Abuja-based Police officer.

The Guardian reports that Badenoch, in an interview with US media outlet, The Free Press, had lambasted the Nigerian Police and accused them of robbing citizens they were supposed to protect.

The police in Nigeria would rob us. The police stole my brother’s shoes and his watch. It’s a very poor country, so people do all sorts of things,” began Badenoch.

They took his shoes and his watch? It’s a very poor country. People do all sorts of things. So, giving people a gun is just a license to intimidate. But that’s not just the problem. That is not the bar we should use for the British police. When I was burgled, for example, the police were there. They were helpful before they eventually caught the person. This was in 2004, that was 20 years ago.

PoliticsShehu Sani Warns Against Misuse Of Social Media by Edygrin(op): 1:21pm On Dec 15, 2024
A former senator representing Kaduna Central has warned against the misuse of social media.

He cautioned individuals using derogatory language on social media to always be prepared to defend their actions in a court of law.

On Sunday, Senator Sani wrote on his verified Facebook page:

If you are using social media these days, just keep a lawyer close to you or make sure that you have evidence for anything you post or comment on.

If you have to call someone a bastard or call a lady a prostitute, just make sure you have the evidence to prove your claim.

“The number of people taken to court for libel or defamation is growing nowadays. And the lawyers will charge you so high before making an appearance in your defense. A stitch in time saves nine.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have been dragged before a Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged unlawful removal of Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

The president and 10 others were sued by two civil groups – Community Rescue Initiative, Toro Concerned Citizens of a Relief Foundation – and an Abuja based lawyer, Comrade Nasir Bala.

The three plaintiffs are praying the court to restrain the Clerk of the National Assembly from transmitting to President Tinubu the concurrent resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives, which purportedly removed Umar as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

They are also praying the court to stop the president from giving effect to the resolution of the two chambers of the National Assembly on the grounds that clear provisions of the law, especially the 1999 Constitution, were not followed in the purported removal of the CCT boss.

Among others, the plaintiffs are seeking seven declarative reliefs against the president and 10 other defendants. The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1796/2024, was instituted on their behalf by Mahmoud M. Maidoki Esq., A.G Salisu Esq., Jibrin S. Jibrin Baq., and Abubakar S. Idris Bag.

In faulting the action of the National Assembly, the plaintiffs asked the Federal High Court to determine: Whether by virtue of the provisions of Sections 1(1) and (3) , 6(5), 153 (1) (e) & (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) as well as Paragraph 13 (a) (vii) and (b) of the Third Schedule thereof, the purported removal of the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal by the 4th Defendant is illegal, void, unconstitutional and of no effect whatsoever same having been made pursuant to the provisions of section 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution or any other law for that matter.

Whether by virtue of the provisions of Paragraph 17 (1) of the 5th Schedule to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), Section 20 (1) and (4) of the Code of Conduct Bureau & Tribunal Act and the subsistence of the occupation of the office of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal by Hon. Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar, the purported appointment and subsequent confirmation of the 10th or 11th Defendants into the same office by the 1st and 4th Defendants, respectively, is illegal, void, unconstitutional and of no effect same having been done in clear breach of the applicable provisions of the 1999 Constitution (Supra) and the Code of Conduct and Tribunal Act (Supra).

Whether the purported removal of the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal in the person of Hon. Justice Danladi Yakubu Umar as done by the 4th Defendant based on the motion and submission founded by distinguished Senator Opeyemi Bamidele during its plenary of 20th November 2024 and the subsequent concurrence by the 6th Defendant on 26th November, 2024 at its plenary has occasioned/amounted to a breach of Section 36(1) and Section 6 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) as the allegations of misconduct among others which formed the basis of the resolution/decision in issue has not been proved/established in the manner prescribed by law.

The plaintiff urged that if the above questions are answered in the affirmative the court should declare that by virtue of the provisions of Sections 1(1) and (3), 6(6), 153 (1) (e) & (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) as well as Paragraph 13 (a) (vii) and (b) of the Third Schedule thereof, the purported removal of the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal by the 4th Defendant is illegal, void, unconstitutional and of no effect. The Court further adjourned the suit to January 14, 2025 for hearing.

PoliticsRe: Labour Party Asks Court To Declare Defectors’ Seats Vacant by Edygrin(op):
Labour Party is a very shameless party, you're talking of betrayal when your party is betrayal personified, your party was nowhere when Peter Obi brought it back to life, due to his influence, you got over 6 million votes in the presidential elections, won a governorship seat, a senate seat and various HoR seats.

Instead of consolidating on that you decide to fight the man who brought all this to you and you think your ship won't sink?

The only governor you have, just gave all the chairmanship and councilorship seats to ZLP.

Your court case won't achieve anything, 2025 and 2026 will see your demise as a party.
PoliticsLabour Party Asks Court To Declare Defectors’ Seats Vacant by Edygrin(op): 7:17am On Dec 14, 2024
The Labour Party, LP, says it has asked the court to declare the seats of its lawmakers who defected to other political parties vacant.

LP was reacting to the defection of a lawmaker from Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, Alfred Ajang Illiya, which it described as shameful.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, Illiya blamed the leadership crisis within the LP for his defection to APC.

Two days ago, another LP member, Daniel Chollom, defected to the APC.

Chollom, in a letter read during plenary by the Speaker, cited the Labour Party’s leadership crisis and his desire to support the President in national development as reasons for his decision.

Four other members of the House of Representatives from the LP had earlier defected to the APC.

Reacting to the development, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said Iliya brought dishonour to himself by defecting to APC.

In a statement, Ifoh said: “The leadership of the Labour Party again received with dismay news of the betrayal of the people of Jos South/Jos East by Mr. Akangbe Illiya, a man whom the Labour Party and the people of Plateau State entrusted with their collective hopes and aspirations for a just and equitable society through legislation.

Hon. Illiya who just engraved his name on the Labour Party ‘Hall of Shame’ Register has brought dishonour to himself through this action.

While it is true that the constitution guarantees citizens the right to freedom of association, the constitution qualifies such rights regarding the membership of political parties.

Ifoh added that the law does not protect an individual who steals the mandate of a political party only to run to another party without “first surrendering the mandate he deceitfully acquired”.

He added: “This, defection like similar ones before it is quite unfortunate and condemnable.

Section 68(g) of the 1999 constitution is emphatic on when to defect and what happens when a lawmaker sponsored by a political party decides to jump ship.

It is unnecessary probing why most of the defectors chose the All Progressives Congress (APC) as their destination point and why the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tajudeen Abass has refused to respect the provisions of the constitution by declaring their seats vacant.

However, those politicians who have chosen to abandon the people at this crucial time in their lives are the ones who deserve pity because they have exposed themselves as unworthy of our collective trust going forward.

Meanwhile, the Party has since filled actions in the court to compel the National Assembly leadership to declare the seats of the defected Labour Party lawmakers vacant. The suit also seeks that every salary, emolument or privileges received, from the date of defection, be returned.

PoliticsNo One In Their Right Senses Would Sustain Quarrel With Wike – Akpabio by Edygrin(op): 7:00am On Dec 14, 2024
President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has declared that only those who are not in their right senses could sustain a fight with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Akpabio, who spoke on Friday during the public lecture and book launch organized to celebrate Wike’s birthday in Port Harcourt, was apparently reacting to the face-off between Wike and his successor as governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

The Senate President, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, used the opportunity to critique Governor Fubara’s management of the ongoing political crisis in the state, particularly regarding his relationship with the legislature.

Akpabio emphasized the importance of maintaining quality relationships with legislative leadership, narrating the lessons he learned from his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.

For those who may not understand politics, we were taught that the parliament can turn a woman into a man and a man into a woman

As a governor, my greatest fear was my House of Assembly. That’s why I always worked closely with my Speaker”, Akpabio said.

He acknowledged Wike’s ability to reconcile quickly after any disagreements, stating that “No one in their right senses would sustain a quarrel with Wike”.

Addressing Wike directly, Akpabio said, “Your contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, both as governor and now as minister, are indelible. The bridges you’ve built stand as a testament to your commitment to progress and unity.

She won't, you know why?
The Yorubas are not the founders of Boko Haram neither do they have any Islamic terrorist faction.

This will be used against her someday, I think she's fooling herself by saying she's more of a Yoruba than being a Nigerian, she will forever be seen as a UK citizen of Nigerian descent
Disrespectful as how?
Isn't that the truth?

You think she'll come back to contest election so that you'll vote an illiterate Muslim over her?

Is Northern Nigeria not the head quarters of Boko Haram and other Islamic terrorist?

Or is the truth too painful to hear?

UFOs and what have you is only for people in a working economy who don't worry about where their next meal will come from.

How do you expect people who are hustling and bustling to sit and be monitoring moving objects in the sky.

Nigeria isn't a living thing, you're the "Nigeria" she's talking about, that's how the world sees you.

Saying the world should come and take over Nigeria is like saying you want to be enslaved again.

PoliticsBlame Buhari For ‘Yorubanisation’ Of Tinubu’s Govt, Ozekhome Tells Nigerians by Edygrin(op): 11:10am On Dec 12, 2024
Rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome, insists that former President Muhammadu Buhari should be blamed for the preference by his successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to appoint persons from his ethnic Yoruba language group into key positions of government.

Ozekhome, who delivered an address at a symposium on human rights organised by the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) held in Abuja on Wednesday, claimed that the Buhari-led administration polarised Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines.

The rights activist noted that it was not surprising that such a trajectory is being followed by President Tinubu, since it was tolerated by gullible Nigerians when Buhari was at the helm.

When I hear today the northerners complain that Tinubu has ‘Yorubanised’ Nigeria, with so many Yorubas in the highest places in Nigeria, it’s true they are making a point. But the question I would ask is: where were you when Buhari, for eight years, literally ‘northernised’ every position in Nigeria? You were either a northerner or a Muslim,” he said.

I cried, I cried, I wrote and wrote. I wrote tons of articles. One of the 50 books which I presented on my 67th birthday was titled: ‘How Buhari Mismanaged Nigeria.’ Some people called it ‘na we we,’ this is our man, and even if he is riding roughshod over all of us, it doesn’t matter.

Hear no evil, see no evil because he is our man. Even if it is not benefitting us, the fact that he is our man is sufficient. Once it is no longer our man, we must also take up arms. No country grows like that.

At the event, themed “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equality, and Dignity for All,” he warned those in positions of authority against compromising the unity of Nigerians for granted on the altar of the pursuit of tribalism, ethnicity, and sectionalism.

He described the 1999 constitution as amended as flawed, adding that there is a need for a new constitution with inputs from Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic and religious differences, on the way forward for the country.

We need to redefine ourselves, not the present system where thieves are rewarded with doctorate degrees,” he said.

The Commission’s Ambassador-at-Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, emphasized that this year’s theme presents a significant opportunity, drawing attention to the complexity of human rights linked to the multicultural and multi-ethnic composition of over 250 ethnic groups and more than 500 languages spoken in Nigeria.

He remarked that recurring ethnic and religious conflicts have threatened Nigeria’s national unity and stability, noting that the diversity of Nigeria’s population offers both challenges and opportunities for cultural exchange and understanding, which can promote national unity and cooperation.

According to him, the one-day symposium, held on Wednesday, 11th December 2024, consequently offers a singular opportunity to acquire knowledge and reinforce ties with other stakeholders to promote “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equality, and Dignity for All.”

Additionally, he mentioned that the occasion signifies the official swearing-in of IHRC’s new officials: H.E. Ambassador Dr. Malami Shehu Ma’Aji MFR, who was appointed IHRC Special Advisor on Intergovernmental Affairs for the Africa Region, with Chief John Paul Ochemba serving as IHRC Advisor on Special Monitoring Mission Nigeria, and Dr. Kingsley Nwokoma as IHRC Commissioner in Nigeria, all of whose appointments were duly approved by the IHRC Secretary-General, Prof. h.c. Rafał Marcin Wasik.

Server error or INEC switching it off wouldn't change a single thing right now, the only thing is that Tinubu's victory will always be debatable and Mahmood Yakubu will go down as the worst INEC Chairman in history, man had years to prepare and billions were spent only for everything to go down the drain on election day.

He prepared for years, tested it in state elections, came out to tell Nigerians that everything was fine and that they were ready for the elections only for the server to stop working for the presidential elections and to save face, the winner was declared by midnight when most Nigerians were sleeping and guess what, Mahmood Yakubu never resigned, Buhari didn't sack him for his incompetency, the president elect haven't sacked him either instead he continues using him to bastardize our electoral process, then tell me why most Nigerians won't question the election results.
PoliticsImo State Govt Replies PDP Over Low Rating On VAT Collection by Edygrin(op): 9:48am On Dec 11, 2024
The All Progressives Congress-led administration of Hope Uzodinma in Imo State has replied to the People Democratic Party (PDP) on the issue of low collection of Value Added Tax (VAT) in the State, maintaining that PDP is ignorant of simple economics.

In a press statement, the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelunba berated the PDP for its ignorance in what he described as dynamics of Value Added Tax in the economy of the State.

Emelunba stated that contrary to what he regards as mischievous and ignorant submission of the PDP, that VAT is a consumption tax collected by the Federal Government which has no correlation with the economic growth or productivity of any State.

The PDP had earlier accused Uzodinma of not doing enough to stir up the economy of the State, blaming him for lack of roads, non-payment of minimum wage, and insecurity in the State.

The Commissioner for Information, while reacting on the issue, dismissed the allegations, maintaining that the State Chapter of the PDP goofed again with the aim of deceiving the public with what he termed as false and misleading information.

He described PDP’s claims as the height of economic illiteracy, noting that if a State’s economy was measured by VAT earnings, then Imo State’s GDP, according to him, could not have been the fourth highest out of the 36 States of the Federation.

"Apart from displaying its crass ignorance in the economic dynamics of Value Added Tax, which is a consumptive, Federal tax not based on production, PDP flew off the handle to whip up sentiments based on absolute falsehood,” the Commissioner stated.

Emelumba, noted that the low rate of VAT Collection in the State is as a result of factors independent of the economic and infrastructural policies of the State.

He further noted that while the Government has no control over businesses and their operational capability, including how much they remit as VAT, the State Government has created the enabling environment to attract them to the State, adding that it was why the State economy was growing faster than that of many States.

We have an automated civil service which has received the applause of the World Bank because it has perfected the ease of doing business.

"The State recently won the World Bank’s trophy under the States Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) and was rewarded with Four Million United States Dollars,” he maintained.

Do you think Abia businessmen travel around the world for contacts and businesses go with bicycles?
You're ignorant if you believe Abia state needs a passenger airport when it has airport all around it. What Abia state needs is a Cargo Airport or a River Port as being speculated.

As a Nigerian you don't even know whether to celebrate news like this or just sigh.

Bello may actually not spend a night in Kuje prison, if he does he'll be given the Bobrisky treatment meaning he might actually stay in the VIP section of Kuje, or worst still he will just be in his house till then.

The Nigerian justice system is at an all time low.
