They had gone to bed that fateful night in Gboko, Benue State, not knowing they would not sleep to see the break of a new day – no thanks to the outage in public power supply which compelled the head of the family, Lawani Oye, to put on his power generating set. His intention was to avail his family members a good sleeping environment, but it all turned out a disaster that claimed the lives of no fewer than seven members of the family. They were all roasted in an inferno that engulfed the block of three flats at the early hours of Friday, at Ayankor, close to Young Secondary School, Gboko East, in Gboko local government area of Benue State. Sunday Vanguard gathered from an eyewitness that the inferno, which started at about 1am, engulfed the block of flats, killing the husband and wife, Mr. And Mrs. Lawani Oye, and their five children. Lawani Oye was said to be a popular automobile panel beater in Gboko while his wife was a business woman in the neighborhood. ‘Oye omo Yoruba,’ as he was popularly called at the mechanic village in Gboko, was said to have switched on his power generator but mistakenly left a lantern with flames not far from where the generator was positioned on the night of the incident. This fatal mistake led to the razing of his house and the death of his entire household. One of his colleagues, who simply gave his name as Ter, said the late Oye, before his untimely death, was one of the most trusted hands in the panel beating business in the area. “He was a man who knew his job and had no issues with anyone. We were all shocked to hear that he died after closing from work, alongside his entire family in the disaster,” Ter said. “Though we have declare a day of mourning for him and the family by closing our business for the day in respect and honour for the departed family, we will all miss him because he was a good man.” . Another eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said the fire which started when everyone had gone to bed, razed the entire block of flats, though other occupants of the building managed to escape. According to him, “we all sat outside after an outage in public power supply, to discuss contemporary issues that night, after which everyone retired to his house. “It was shortly after that, as usual, that they put on their generator and went to bed only for everybody in the neighborhood to be woken up by the shouts of fire and there was so much confusion as everyone ran for dear life. “I think the fire started at about 12 midnight in Oye’s flat when everyone in the neighbourhood, including the victims of the inferno, had gone to bed. “It was his wife and mother of the dead children, who we popularly called Mama Tunde, who also died in the disaster that raised the alarm that prompted other neighbours to rush out of their flats. “In the midst of the confusion, we all battled to put out the strange fire in order to rescue the family but it was all in vain. After failing, however, we all managed to escape with our families. “While this was going on, some people tried to reach the fire service but it was too late. “Our pain about this tragic and unfortunate incident is that the same woman who died with her family in the fire was the one who raised the alarm that saved others and her family could not be saved; they were burnt beyond recognition. “The whole thing is still a mystery to neighbors and no one can at this moment ascertain the cause of the inferno but the only clue we have is that their generator was on that night, and, by the time we went round after the fire, we saw that a lantern was positioned very close to the generating set. “Perhaps the fire was ignited by the petrol in the generator and the flame of the lantern, but no one can really say for sure”. The eyewitness, who said some relations of the deceased family were contacted after the incident, also ruled out the possibility of sabotage. “I believe that what happened here could be a case of negligence, but unfortunately it turned out a fatal one; it is just painful,” he added. Sunday Vanguard further gathered that the charred remains of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the Gboko General Hospital though unattended to because workers in the hospital were on strike while arrangements to bury them where on. When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Benue State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Matthew Oku, said he was yet to receive the full report of the unfortunate incident from the Gboko Division of the Command. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/man-wife-5-children-roasted-midnight-mystery-fire/ pix: 1. The huge human and vehicular traffic at the Onitsha Main Market through the New Market Road failed to hide the gloom that has enveloped the home of the Azubikes, a small house tucked behind one of the major buildings along the road. The family had had to swallow the hard reality of losing their promising 18-year-old son, Chukwuebuka, in mysterious circumstances. Chukwebuka, who was the Senior Prefect of Modebe Memorial Secondary School, Onitsha could not recover from a fatal punch he received from a junior he had tried to correct few weeks ago. He died few hours later after many attempts to revive him at a private hospital in Onitsha failed. Rumours had circulated in the area at the time that a year one student had used a mystery ring to punch Chukwuebuka even though no one could prove such claim. Saturday PUNCH gathered that Chukwuebuka was alerted by other SS1 students who had complained about how the boy was improperly dressed for school. They also complained that he was distracting them with pornography which he watched on a mobile phone in class. Responding, Chukwuebuka came in and asked the boy to leave the school premises immediately. In the confrontation that followed, the boy punched Chukwuebuka, sending him sprawling in a fit on the ground. He was rushed to the nearby New Hope Hospital, where medical officials worked on him till he died. During Saturday PUNCH’s visit to the deceased’s family home at New Market Road, Chukwuebuka’s younger brother directed our reporter to the sitting area, where their grandmother was receiving counselling from a young woman. The pain of the old woman was further magnified by the crutches lying beside her. It was clear the pain of losing her grandchild had taken a heavy toll on the woman’s appearance. Our correspondent was later directed to Chukwuebuka’s mother, Ifeanyi, a young woman, holding a rosary which she said had been her constant companion and solace as she grieved over the death of her son. Holding back tears, Ifeanyi reluctantly agreed to an interview. She had, with the support of her mother, brought up Chukwuebuka and her younger brother, it was learnt. Chukwuebuka, according to her, was in high spirits when he left home that fateful morning in November. “Because he was the senior prefect of the school, he had to leave very early. I asked what he would want me to prepare for him as lunch. And he said I should prepare ora (a special leafy Igbo sauce),” she recalled. “I was at the market when an anonymous caller informed me that Ebuka had fainted in school and had been taken to New Hope (hospital). When I got there, they had placed him on oxygen. Then I called a reverend father to come over and pray for him,” she added. The distraught mother said they all fought hard to revive her son until about 9pm when he began to struggle for breath. “I held him down and we continued to pray. But he eventually gave up. I fainted. I was told it took a long time before I came around,” Ifeanyi said. Ifeanyi also believed that her son was hit with a fetish ring. She said while the efforts to revive Ebuka were ongoing, she pleaded with the boy who punched Chukwuebuka to undo the action that sent her son into a coma. Speaking amid sobs, Ifeanyi wondered why Chukwuebuka, who had no problem with anyone would become such a tragic victim. “He was my only hope. I don’t know what to do now. Though I am leaving everything to God, I feel very pained and sad. All my efforts these past 18 years have just gone like that. Well, God knows best,” she lamented. Weeks after the incident, the situation at Modebe Memorial Secondary School had returned to normal when Saturday PUNCH visited. The school seemed to have overcome the initial shock that followed Chukwuebuka’s death and the events leading to it. The principal of the school, Mr. Ralph Machi, was appreciative of the fact that Saturday PUNCH had visited to find out what actually happened. He complained that a lot of what had gone into the media was speculative and hearsay. Machi said the incident was started by an SS1 student named Chukwunweike Chukwuma, who had come to the school not properly dressed and wearing bathroom slippers. The principal said, “He was not properly dressed. He was using his phone to terrorise his classmates. He was watching pornographic video on it. So they wanted him to go away. He refused. Then they had to beckon on Chukwuebuka as the senior prefect to come and do something about it. In a bid to drive the boy away from the class, Chukwuma gave Chukwuebuka a punch, and he collapsed.” On the likely cause of death, the principal said an autopsy was not conducted on the boy because the family had collected his corpse before that could be done. “The day following his death, his family took away his body and deposited it at the general hospital,” he said. Machi described the deceased as a level-headed boy, who was committed to his studies and duties as senior prefect. “He was very handsome, very intelligent. He was not the troublesome type,” the principal said. The police told Saturday PUNCH that Chukwuma, the prime suspect, was still in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department pending when its investigation would be completed. http://www.punchng.com/feature/super-saturday-crime/my-son-was-my-hope-of-a-great-future-mother-of-onitsha-boy-punched-to-death-by-classmate/

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has slammed the All Progressives Congress for refusing to congratulate him since he emerged as the winner of the PDP primary in Lagos, last Monday. The APC spokesperson in Lagos, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, had said that the APC would not congratulate the PDP because of the controversy and allegations of rigging which greeted the primary. In the PDP primary, 806 accredited delegates voted but the number of ballots cast turned out to be 863 and the runner up in the primary, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has openly rejected the outcome of the primary, describing it as a sham. However, the APC said it will not congratulate Agbaje because doing such “implies that we are supporting an illegality.” Agbaje, in a statement by his director, media and publicity, Mr. Felix Oboagwina, said the APC were a bunch of hypocrites. The statement read in part, “We had wondered why neither the APC candidate nor the party had deemed it fit to congratulate Agbaje in line with the finest tenets of democracy. But it is now clear that they were in shock at the emergence of a credible and powerful candidate for the PDP in Lagos State. “The APC lacks the moral standing to point fingers because its own primaries had glaring flaws. For example, the APC only released the delegates’ list on the day of the primary, while the PDP released its delegates’ list a week before the first primary and two weeks before the governorship primary. Also, the APC candidate came through imposition, the method it has always used from time immemorial.” “The APC has hinged its history on the imposition of candidates. And, in keeping with this undemocratic tradition, the APC ensured its governorship candidate emerged strictly through imposition.” source: http://www.punchng.com/politics/agbaje-slams-apc-for-refusing-to-congratulate-him/

Parents please be careful with the kind of people you bring around your children. It is your responsibility to protect them. I know with work and other engagements it is almost impossible not to have someone to help with the kids but make sure it's someone you can trust with the lives of your children. Last month, we all watched in horror as a Ugandan maid battered a 2 year old girl. This week we heard about the maid who took two young boys from their home in Lagos after just a few weeks of working with the family. And I just heard about a maid in Abuja who strangled a 3 year old girl recently just because the girl's mum told her she couldn't travel to her village for Christmas. The disappointed maid was said to have killed the little girl in anger because the girl's mother had insisted she had to stay in Abuja to look after the child. Please mothers, be more careful. http://lindaikeji..in/2014/12/parents-pleases-be-careful-abuja-maid.html?m=1 |
