DanNafada: My little contribution as a doctor who has worked in a teaching hospital in Naija and now working in the NHS:

1. It is an absolute shame for any doctor to go on total strike, for whatever reason. There is just no justification for causing so much suffering and death in a profession that is considered to be as noble as Medicine.
2. The Chief Executive of every major health organization or hospital in most of the West is NOT a doctor. In the NHS for example, there is a Medical Director and others below him who are doctors but the head honcho is the Chief Executive, who is usually not a doctor.
3. There are Nurse Consultants in the NHS but they are mainly based in tertiary academic units and hardly involved in daily clinical care.
4. The first and only time I remember the BMA agreeing to a Doctor's strike in England, emergency and other essential services were not affected. Hardly anybody noticed there was a strike going on and most of this was because doctors voluntarily decided it would have been unethical, even if the reason for considering the strike was justified.

Nigerians have enough on their hands as it is. That a group of very educated and essential professionals cannot see why it is necessary to get back to work simply for the sake of the common man is extremely sad.

But it is insane to compare their scope of study to that of Medicine, let alone the added training before a doctor is certified a Specialist or a Consultant. BTW, all that the Nurse know is what the Doctor thought him in school. The Nurse's entire scope of study and training is a fragment of what the Doctor was trained.

Those that missed their opportunity to become a Medical doctor can always retry going back to school.

Next time to go to the hospital ask to see the Nurse or the Cleaner (they are Hospital Workers).

egift: If not for the government hunting for votes, the request by Joint Health Sector Union (cleaners, nurses, pharmacies, lab technicians, gate men, etc) will not be an issue.

- How can you hand over management of the hospital and Nigerian health administration to people who have limited medical knowledge and experiences.
- By making them Consultants and Directors in our hospitals, their decisions over rule those of the Doctors. If a doctor say "Remove the bandage in 4 days", and the "Consultant" Nurse say "No leave it for 6 days". - Whose instruction is obeyed?
- If made a "Consultant Nurse", it means when a patient comes to the hospital, the Nurse will see the patient and make prescriptions. What training do she have to make that decision?
- If you want to be addressed as a Doctor, Consultant or made a Director - Go and study it and be trained.

No matter how long you serve Tea in an Aeroplane as a hostess, you will not be called a Pilot.

They do not have the same admission requirements like army, navy, air force, neither do they spend d same no of years. D right comparison would have been a non officer in d army lyk sergeant vs an officer say lieutenant cos though they both work in d same army, their qualification is different and admission requirement is different, and only the officers are allowed admin positions
