A final year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Chukwuemeka Akachi, has committed suicide after stating the reason for his action on Facebook. Akachi, a native of Eha-Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, was said to have battled dementia for over two months. PUNCH Metro learnt that following an earlier threat to take his own life, two lecturers had been asked by the university to monitor and counsel him. The English and Literary Studies student, however, carried out his threat by taking a poisonous substance. A lecturer, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent that it was the second time Akachi would be attempting suicide. He said the victim had a long battle with dementia before he took his life. PUNCH Metro observed that the deceased had gone on Facebookwhere he wrote a suicide note. The budding poet wrote, “Forgive me. In case you are the one who found the body. I am really sorry. It had to be someone, you know. I have chosen Jo Nketaih’s poem as my suicide note: ‘They said you came looking for me. I did not drown; I was the water.’ Where do atheists go to when they die? Lol. Amen.” In one of his previous posts, he said his mental health condition had affected his growth. “My mental health has been on life support for a while now. Thanks to those who call. Text. Visit. Speak to me. May we always remember. May we never forget. You may have added a few hours, months or days to my time here. But you know life support is expensive, right? Thanks for trying. Amen,” he stated. The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police, said the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/15/facebook-note-makes-unn-undergraduate-to-commit-suicide/

NLC will pay for ‘waking me up’ with petrol trucks – Ngige threatens. Chris Ngige has said said that members of the NLC will pay for waking him up in his residence during their protest – Ngige said he was woken up from his sleep around 5 am on Wednesday, May 8, by NLC members and their leaders – According to the minister, his family has been distraught from the action of the labour members The minister of labour and productivity, Chris Ngige, has threatened legal action against members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for ‘waking him up’ in the past week during their protest at his Abuja residence. Vanguard reports that Ngige said he was woken up from his sleep around 5 am on Wednesday, May 8, when members of the NLC led by their president Ayuba Wabba stormed his residence with petrol laden truck in protest. According to Ngige, his wife had informed him that their security guards were having issues with some strange fellows at the gate house. He also said his wife noted that some people who arrived the vicinity at about 4.30 am the same day were on the walls of his house. Ngige said: “When the security people accosted them, they discovered that it was the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress himself that came physically with two tankers; one laden with petroleum, the second half empty.” “One was put at the gate of my house and the second at the gate of my neighbour’s house. When I heard the story, it was very strange. “I looked from upstairs and I saw that the tankers were actually blocking the entrance to my house. I came down and asked for the chief detail who told me the whole story. And it emerged that they even had a scuffle with the President of the NLC when they were struggling for the keys of the tankers. “So I went back and made calls to the FCT Commissioner of Police, Director of SSS and the Federal Road Safety Commission to see if they could move the vehicles,” the minister lamented. He further alleged that following the NLC protest, his wife, children, children of his domestic staff and security personnel were trapped. The minister also said it was difficult for his neighbour to go out for his daily activity on that day. Noting the illegality of the action of the NLC leaders and their members, Ngige said unionism means dialogue and not obstruction. “It is obstruction; it is against the law of the country. Then putting a tanker with petrol is arson, the place could have caught fire, the entire street could have been on fire. I don’t know what to say,” he said. He also said that he later gathered that the NLC was focused on blocking the entrance to his residence till 10 am to prevent him from attending the Federal executive meeting on that day. “Those tankers were removed around 6 pm. Are you planning to take any action against the NLC? My neighbour says he is going to take legal action. I will also take legal action, illegal actions are actionable; nobody is above the law. Their grouse is the inauguration of the NSITF Board. So, I am very very distraught, my family is traumatised, the people in my house are traumatised, my domestic staff and their families are traumatised; even my neighbour and his wife couldn’t do their business for the day. Those tankers were removed around 6pm. Are you planning to take any action against the NLC? My neighbour says he is going to take legal action. I will also take legal action, illegal actions are actionable; nobody is above the law. Their grouse is the inauguration of the NSITF Board,” Ngige added. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/12/nlc-to-pay-ngige-for-waking-him-up-with-petrol-trucks/

Nollywood actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim has revealed she won’t be able to have a child for the rest of her life because she has no womb (uterus). While speaking at an event tagged “Conversation With Nse” in Lekki, the actress told her audience that three- years ago she was diagnosed with Adenomyosis, a condition whereby the inner lining of the uterus breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus. She said, “I was told I couldn’t have kids. And so, I had to have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) to make me have a life again and to stop going through what I was going through. And I’m literarily telling women and men, it really doesn’t matter if you can’t bear children. What really matters is what you would do for the world, for the universe.” Recounting when she was first told by the doctor that she would have to remove her uterus to live a normal life, she said, “Tears dropped and then my husband squeezed my hand. It was reassuring there was someone there and it was telling me that this is reality, my reality.” Speaking further, she revealed the ordeal made her fall into depression. “I didn’t think there was any point anymore because my society taught me that I have to be a mother to be appreciated and every time I went online, I would have one troll or two say ‘you never born? But I’m thankful that that didn’t break me. I’m thankful for Nollywood.” https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/12/nse-ikpe-etim-tells-why-should-not-be-able-to-bear-a-child/

The Champions League final will be an affair between two English clubs, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur F.C in Madrid on June 1. On Tuesday, Liverpool made one the greatest comebacks as they thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the second-leg to complete a stunning 4-3 aggregate, despite the Spanish club initial 3 – 0 victory in the first leg of their semifinal clash. In Wednesday’s semifinal match between Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur F.C, Lucas Moura scored hattrick to seal the game 3-2 for Spurs at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The final scoreline was 3-3 on aggregate and this saw the visitors go through on the away goals rule. Ajax, went into the second leg with a 1-0 from the first leg courtesy of Donny van de Beek‘s goal in London. Five minutes into the game today when their teenage captain Matthijs de Ligt headed home from a corner kick. But the downfall of Ajax began after Brazilian Lucas Moura slotted home on 55 minutes and then slammed the ball in from close range on 59 minutes to equalize on the night. The biggest shocker of the night happened in the stoppage-time as Moura found the net again and scored his third goal in the 96th minuteto complete a second remarkable comeback for Premier League clubs in the Champions League. The rate at which people from African rural areas move to township us getting too large. Every year, thousands of school leavers rush to urban areas to seek employment. This results in overcrowded cities and unpopulated countrysides. Most of our youths nowadays wrongly regards agriculture as poor man’s business. They prefer white collar jobs to farming and forget that one can gain fame and wealth through agriculture. Most of these youths are greatly disappointed in the townships. Lack of jobs and lack of money make them become thieves and robbers. Country life with its fresh air, is forgotten. Only old people and children are left behind. Our are uncut. Valuable customs, craft and arts become things of the past. One way of checking this movement is by setting up factories in rural areas; other ways are good means of transport and communication. Libraries, medical services and post offices are equally important amenities necessary in rural areas. Africa government are the chief bodies that can check this unnecessary drift to urban areas. The villages must be made attractive and healthy before people will be interested in living there. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/06/drift-to-townships/

The Second Niger Bridge is very important for the economy of the South-East and the Nigerian economy as a whole. I had the privilege of visiting the bridge from the Asaba end. The fascinating thing as we were told by the engineers is how much work goes into just the piling. Each one of the piers is the equivalent of an 18 storey building in the ground and there are about 1,000 – 1,300 workers hard at work to bring the project to a reality. It is the firm commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari that this project be completed as quickly as it can. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/04/vice-president-yemi-osinbanjo-speaks-on-second-naija-bridgephotos/

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has moved to improve the nutrition and combat diseases in the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in the North-east. The UN agency, in a programme supported by the Government of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation yesterday distributed nine fresh foods and protein rich foods to about 2,000 households in Borno State, the epicentre of Boko Haram crisis. A statement by FAO said: “Beneficiaries were registered electronically and received voucher cards that they later redeemed for fresh foods.” The statement noted that: “Through these distributions, FAO provides a market for smallholders, especially for producers of fresh foods that typically face high perishability and unstable prices. Some of the food items were purchased directly from locations like the vast Gamboru produce market in Maiduguri, with a state food safety team monitoring the quality of the purchases at point of sale and during the distributions.” The statement quoted Ahmed Mohammed who sells produce in Gamboru Market, saying: “I am very happy my cabbage is going towards the nutrition of the IDPs,” revealing that he sourced his cabbage from FAO-assisted dry season farmers in Konduga, a Borno State Local Government Area. The statement also quoted Suffyan Koroma, FAO Representative in Nigeria, as saying: “FAO is using the fresh food voucher approach to boost access to nutritious and diversified food items to IDPs, while providing a platform for our dry season supported farmers to sell their harvests.” He said: “Our fresh food distribution is also promoting smallholder market participation as we have focused on crops traditionally farmed within local communities.” Koroma disclosed that during the dry season, FAO supported farmers received fertiliser and vegetable seed including okra, amaranthus, cabbage, tomato, carrot and onion. He added that in areas suitable for production, farmers also received rice and maize seed. He said: “In total, about 62,000 dry season beneficiary households, translating to close to 430,000 people, had their incomes or food and nutrition security supported. Dry season harvests are expected to be continue to June, 2019 in some communities.” He revealed that in the forthcoming rainy season, FAO aimed to assist about 92,000 households with crop seed and fertiliser delivered through direct distributions, as well as seed fairs where farmers could make their ‘seed of choice’ from FAO-supported vendors. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/04/fao-set-move-on-combating-disease-at-idps-camp/

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Tijani Muhammad-Bande, has formally declared his intention to vie for the presidency of the 74th UN General Assembly (UNGA). Muhammad-Bande made the declaration at a cocktail party attended by world diplomats and delegates in New York on Friday evening. This came barely eight days after the current UNGA president, Ms Maria Espinosa, announced him as the first candidate for the position. Mike Ene who is the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), says violence in the North-East is morphing into another Boko Haram insurgency in the region and is creating a wide gap in education between the North and the South. In a statement issued on Friday, the Secretary-General commented on the attack by bandits on the Government Girls Secondary School in Moriki area of Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The union also decried the security challenges facing the North-West and demanded action. The union lamented that the violence in the region was gaining ground like the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, which it said had led to the killing of 600 teachers in Borno State. He said the activities of the bandits in the North-West, if unchecked, would affect education adversely. He said: “It is regrettable that robbery is becoming so rampant in the North-West and the people cannot sleep with their two eyes closed. What do students have to give to kidnappers? It is beyond human imagination that gunmen struck and found their way into schools. This is an occurrence that this country should rise and fix squarely. The activities of the robbers in the region are creating a wide gap in education between the North and South. Violence has claimed the lives of many teachers. “In Borno State alone, we have lost over 600 teachers through Boko Haram activities. Beyond losing them, Boko Haram fighters and robbers are now heading for the North-West and this will affect education adversely.” https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/04/wide-gap-created-in-education-between-the-northern-state-and-southern-state-by-violence/

The Saudi Arabian government has released Ibrahim Abubakar, the Nigerian arrested alongside Zainab Aliyu, to the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah. Abubakar, who was arrested for the same offence as Zainab, was released to Garba Satomi Grema, the acting Consul-General, Nigerian Consulate, on Thursday in line with the previous promise of Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the Nigerian government secured the release of Zainab, the student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, who was arrested and had been in detention since December when a banned drug, tramadol, was found in her bag on arrival in Saudi Arabia. Her continued detention sparked widespread sympathy all over the country, on the back of claims that she was innocent and only fell victim to a drug cartel at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, that specialises in keeping hard drugs in travellers’ bags. Ambassador Mustapha Suleiman, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Nigerian government had succeeded in establishing Zainab’s innocence. It also confirmed that Abubakar, the second Nigerian involved in the case, would be released to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/02/ibrahim-abubakar-who-was-arrested-alongside-zainab-aliyu-released/

Members of the notorious kidnapping syndicate that specialise in abducting travelers along major expressways in Rivers state, have given reasons they carry out such criminal acivities. Recall that in recent times, reports of travelers being abducted along major roads in Rivers state have made major news headlines. One of the victims of such abductions, Mr Happy, who was kidnapped alongside nine other passengers in a commercial bus on Thursday, April 25th while traveling from Warri to Rivers state, has told newsmen what the kidnappers told them whilst in their hideout. According to Mr Happy, the kidnappers informed them that they resorted to kidnapping because the Federal government and state governments have stopped their amnesty programme. The programme which was introduced by late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, ensured that militants who surrendered their arms are placed on a monthly stipend of N65, 000. The militants however complained that this has been stopped and in other to survive and make ends meet, they resorted to the criminal act of kidnapping. They came out of the bush and intercepted the bus. They were fully armed and directed every one of us into the bush and kept us there. While they were beating us, they said they kidnapped us because the federal and state government had stopped giving them the amnesty stipends that they received monthly. They said that is why they are kidnapping people and they said they would continue to kidnap people.” Mr Happy said Mr Happy added that the kidnappers stated that no security agent in Nigeria can stop them from kidnapping. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/05/01/amnesty-kidnaps-travelers-because-government-didnt-pay-them-allowances/

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, has reacted to report of him planning to defect back to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Akpabio, who was a former Governor of Akwa Ibom, had last year announced his resignation as Minority Leader of the Red Chamber and defected to the ruling APC. However, there have been speculations that the lawmaker was planning to return to the PDP. Reacting to the report, the lawmaker insisted that he was comfortable in the fold of the ruling party. Speaking with the Nation, Akpabio also said he bears no grudge or bitterness against those who have betrayed him politically. People don’t understand that life is full of ups and downs. Life is not a straight line. If it is a straight line, it means you are dead. Even if you have a temporary setback, that shouldn’t make you exude bitterness or hate anybody. I can’t go back to the PDP. Why are you people listening to rumour? Why will I go back to the PDP when I am already getting entrenched in the APC? I am excited that the President won the election all over the country,” Akpabio said. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/30/akpabio-returns-to-pdp/

A 34-year-old Nigerian, Samuel Nkennaya, has been killed while another Nigerian, Chinonso Nwudo is in critical condition in South Africa following mob attack. According to a statement released by the Secretary of Mpumalanga Province branch of the Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA), Victor Ayanfe-Oyebanjo, Nkennaya and Nwudo were attacked following accusations that both men kidnapped Chinonye, a six-year-old girl, who unknown to their attackers was Nwudo’s daughter. Ayanfe-Oyebanjo said trouble started when Nwudo took his six-year-old daughter, Chinonye, to visit Nkennaya at White River town in the evening of April 27. Later, Nwudo and Nkennaya proceeded to buy food for Nwudo’s daughter, Chinonye, at KFC restaurant in the area. Shortly after buying the food, some bystanders raised false alarm alleging that both men kidnapped the six-year-old girl. The community members immediately descended on them, beating them with different kinds of weapons. Nwudo began to shout that the girl was his daughter and pleaded that they speak to his South African wife to confirm his claim – which actually saved his life. The statement added that the police later intervened and called for backup to rescue the victims. Nkennaya died at the hospital on Sunday April 28th while Nwudo is in critical health condition. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/30/nigerian-man-killed-in-south-africa-by-mob-following-a-kidnapping-case-alongside-other-nigerians/

Despite allegedly collecting N1.4 m ransom last week, the two kidnapped policemen attached to the National Assembly have still not been released by their abductors. The two policemen were kidnapped in Shere community, Abuja, over two weeks ago on their way home from a funeral. The gunmen were said to have actually kidnapped three policemen, one of whom managed to escape. Their abductors later demanded N10m as ransom to secure their freedom. However, not ready to pay the ransom the Federal Capital Territory Police Command deployed 20 policemen to Gwalluyi community, where the abduction occurred, and its neighbouring communities in search of the missing cops. But when efforts to track down the criminals turned vain, the family members of the abducted policemen were said to have met with the leadership of the Police, which allegedly provided N1m. The worried relations also raised additional N400,000, amounting to N1.4m, which was delivered to the kidnappers by a police officer attached to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department identified as Danladi. “When the families observed that the police were unable to track down the kidnappers, they cried to the authorities in the FCT Police Command which gave them N1m,” A source who spoke to punch stated. “They rallied round to raise additional N400,000 which was given to a pastor who is also a policeman to deliver to the kidnappers for the release of the captives.” A family member expressed apprehension over the safety of the cops whose names he declined to disclose for security reasons. He stated: “Days after receiving the ransom, the kidnappers have failed to release the policemen and we are afraid that something might have happened to them “When they were contacted on the phone, the kidnappers said they had travelled, promising to release the men when they returned, but we don’t understand what they meant by that.” Gajere Danjuma, the acting FCT Police spokesman, said efforts to rescue the men were ongoing. He, however, denied that a ransom was paid to the kidnappers. “Our men are still combing the bush for their rescue but no ransom was paid to anyone,” he said. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/29/abducted-abuja-based-policemen-denied-release-by-kidnappers-despite-collecting-n1-4m/

Actress and wife of Nigerian singer, 2face Idibia, Annie, has stated that she doesn’t like being reffered to as Tubaba’s wife and instead prefers to be addressed and identified on the basis of her own achievements as a successful actress. In a fresh interview with Punch, the mother of two said ”Being addressed as Tubaba’s wife instead of Annie the actress has been a problem that I have been trying to work on for a long time. I want to believe that I have successfully been able to identify and differentiate my brand as Annie Idibia the actress/career woman and Annie Idibia the wife/mother. I prefer being addressed as Annie and not Tubaba’s wife. I hate this because I am my own person and have worked hard to build my career and brand. I should be identified and respected on that basis”. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/27/annie-idibia-i-hate-been-called-tubabas-wife/

Mr Festus Keyamo early hours this morning brought to his twitter handle the case of INEC Electronic Transmission. He said; Without referring to any particular pending Election Petition, there’s a need to generally guide Nigerians not to gullibly fall for the fantasy created by any video circulating where INEC official(s) spoke of INEC’s plan to electronically transmit results before the elections. The video(s) of some INEC official(s) expressing intention to electronically transmit results are only circulated for entertainment. That procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines. Courts are only guided by these documents and not such videos. Also, what you plan to do may be different from what you ACTUALLY DID. Assuming INEC planned to transmit electronically, the moment it said after the election that it did not do so, the matter ends there especially as the Electoral Act & the Guidelines do not allow it to do so. In anticipation of the electronic transmission, some crooks concocted fictitious results and perhaps in connivance with certain INEC insiders (or by hacking) tried to upload those results into the server. The fact that electronic transmission didn’t happen destroyed their plan. The irony is that the real cheats are the ones struggling to create a narrative that they were cheated; the real crooks are the ones struggling to convince everyone that the system is crooked; those who actually planned to steal the people’s mandate are the ones crying foul. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/25/festus-keyamo-speaks-on-inec-electronic-transmission/

These killings must end or Nigeria will lose desperately needed friends, partners and investors. Not only do I condemn this recent killing, but I make an urgent call for the federal and state authorities to track down the culprits and make them pay for their crimes. The time for empty rhetoric is long gone. Now is the time for urgent national action to stem insecurity. Nigeria must once again become synonymous with peace, progress and prosperity. This can only happen when crime and punishment are a natural cause and effect. As long as there is impunity, our nation will lack unity and security. Impunity must end and must end in earnest. These crimes continue to reoccur because previous killings have not been met with justice. When the punishment for crimes are not forthcoming, criminals are emboldened to commit even worse crimes. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/22/atiku-tweets-talks-about-crime/

At least 207 to nearly 450 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a series of 8 blasts shook Sri Lanka on April 21st Easter Sunday. A wave of near-simultaneous explosions rocked three churches and three luxury hotels, officials said, leaving nearly 500 people hospitalized from injuries. Police later reported two further explosions. Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardena said seven suspects had been arrested and that the death toll included at least 27 foreign nationals. He described the attacks as a terrorist incident, and blamed religious extremists. Police conducted a search operation on the outskirts of Colombo, where the latest of eight blasts took place. After police moved in, at least two more blasts occurred, with the occupants of a safehouse apparently blasting explosives to prevent arrest.Three officers were killed. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he feared the violence could trigger instability in the country and its economy. He said his government would “vest all necessary powers with the defense forces” to take action against those responsible for the attacks, “regardless of their stature.” A security official told The Associated Press that two of the blasts were suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak with reporters. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks. 7 suspects have been arrested, defense minister says, after blasts in Sri Lanka that killed over 200 people and injured hundreds more. https://efefemisblog.com.ng/2019/04/21/suspect-arrested-following-the-hit-blast-at-sri-lanka-easter-sunday-photos/
