CrimeConflicting Reports Trail Joy Odama's Death by effoi(op): 9:35am On Jun 30, 2017
Source: http://www.freshpointnews.com/2017/06/30/conflicting-reports-trail-joy-odamas-death/

There are conflicting reports as to what caused the death of Joy Odama, a 200 level Mass Communication student of Cross River State University of Science and Technology (CRUTEC), Calabar, Cross River State.

Joy was found dead in Alhaji Adamu’s house where she had gone to spend a night.

The first autopsy conducted by Dr Paul Jubril of National Hospital Abuja, revealed the cause of death as acute cocaine poisoning. The police however ordered a second autopsy which listed the cause of death as generator fumes poisoning.

The family believes that the police is trying to cover up the crime, Alhaji Adamu being a wealthy and influential person and that the police is shielding the suspect, insisting that their daughter died of cocaine infusion as shown by the first autopsy report.

President, Basic Rights Enlightenment Foundation, BREF, Augustine Okechukwu, reacting on behalf of the family, said: “We are not aware if the suspect is in police custody. “We doubt the claim by the Police that Alhaji Adamu is in its custody. Why can’t the police for once parade him for people to see?” On the autopsy result, he said: “I was there when the police conducted the second autopsy, but they refused to give us the final results when it came out.”

The police have however come out to deny that it is attempting to cover up the truth. Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Jimoh Moshood, said: “We don’t have any contradictions with regard to what we have said. The issue of murder is a capital offence, which cannot be compromised at any level; it has to go to court.

“Anybody has the right to go to court to table any grievances that they might have observed or felt had happened in the course of the investigation into the matter. “I want to assure you that what the police have done is a very thorough job that can stand the test of trial in court against the accused person. As I speak, the accused person is still in Police custody and that is very important to everyone to ensure that justice is done.”

New report not exonerating suspect—FPPRO Moshood noted that the first autopsy report was not rejected by the police, but that it was inconclusive, noting that it was why the Inspector General of Police had to order for another autopsy to be done. He added that the report does not exonerate the suspect in question and the general public should dissociate themselves from the conflicting reports.

His words: “I want to say that we did not reject the first autopsy report. The first autopsy report was not conclusive. “In fact, Dr. Paul Jubril (doctor that conducted first autopsy) equally witnessed the second autopsy report examination. “Dr. Jubril was the person that did the first one that I showed you and he was present when the second one was conducted by Dr. Wilson Ayewu and we equally had Augustine Okechukwu of Basic Rights Enlightenment Foundation at the second round of the autopsy and it was done at the National Hospital, Abuja.

“The report of the second autopsy is not exonerating the suspect and that is what is important. The prosecution will still go ahead. We should disabuse our mind of any conflicting view as to whether Police is out to exonerate the principal suspect in this regard.”

My concern is why two autopsies done at the same hospital would produce disparate results. Maybe a third autopsy should be conducted at a different but also reputable hospital to ensure proper investigation and appropriate justice served.

A former Vice Principal of St.Mary’s Grammer School, Ikole- Ekiti has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 12 year of pupil.

The former VP, Taiwo Ajayi, who was the Vice Principal(Academics) at the time, lured the minor into his office, gagged and raped her on his table.

Ajayi was caught in the act by two teachers who forced themselves into his office.

Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde in delivering judgement relied on the Section 31(2) of the Child Rights Law of Ekiti State, 2012. He rejected the defense counsel’s plea for leniency on grounds that the accused is a first time offender, father and breadwinner of an aged mother.

The justice held that : “The cases of child defilement have been on the increase lately and to serve as a deterrent to others, my view is that the punishment stipulated by lawmakers was deliberate to deter the offence and protect the right to dignity of the child. “The defence counsel is pleading for leniency and praying for a fine instead of the due punishment. My question is who pays the victim for the lifetime scar of the trauma and torture of rape? “I am unable to deviate from the provisions of the law in this instant. The defendant is found guilty as charged and sentenced to life imprisonment.”

The Prosecution in pursuing its case lined up eight witnesses; a medical practitioner from the State University Teaching Hospital, police officers who investigated the case, two other pupils and a teacher in the school.

Ajayi had already being indicted by two panels set up by the ministry to investigate the matter, which led to his suspension from service after he was arrested and arraigned.

The possibility of rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather may become a reality if the Filipino boxer wins his next fight against Australian Jeff Horn this weekend, according to Pacquiao’s trainer.

Pacquiao and Mayweather fought in the “Fight of the Century” two years ago with Mayweather carrying the day in the highly entertaining and financially rewarding fight.

The Filipino boxer is clearly the favorite in Saturday’s fight as he defends his world title against his unbeaten opponent in Brisbane.

This weekend fight is a must is a must win for Pacquiao if he must secure a rematch with Mayweather, according to Freddi Roach.

“He (Horn) can derail us really badly. Manny is, I think, in a must-win situation. He wants a rematch with Mayweather,” Roach said

“And I mean to get Mayweather you have to look good against Jeff Horn, he has to look good, he has to be impressive. “I think there is a lot riding on this fight and I feel Manny has to look really good in this fight and the way the training camp went, I think he will.”

Pacquiao was coy about a possible rematch, reiterating that his focus was on the fight at hand, World Boxing Organisation Welterweight title fight, against 29 year old Horn at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

“If there’s a chance, why not. I’m willing, but let’s focus first for this fight,” the 38-year-old eight-weight world champion responded to reporters when asked about a rematch with Mayweather.

“We don’t want to underestimate Horn thinking about another fight, this fight is not done yet.”

Pacquiao, 38, who is now a Senator in the Philippines retired last year from boxing, before staging a successful comeback against Vargas in November, and is juggling both duties at the moment.

Boxing legend Mayweather, 40, is coming out of retirement to fight mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor in August.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are the best fighters of their time in the Welterweight Category.

In Tunisia, young women are expected to be virgins when they marry, leading to a growing trade in hymen reconstruction surgery.

Yasmine (not her real name) looks nervous. She’s biting her nails and checks her mobile phone constantly.

“I consider this to be deception and I’m really worried,” she says.

We’re on the fourth floor of a private clinic in Tunis – the gynaecology service. Around us in the pink waiting room, other women wait patiently to be seen.

Yasmine confides in me that she is having a hymenoplasty, a short procedure that promises to reconstruct her virginity surgically.

We claim to live in a modern society… but there’s not much modernity when it comes to women’s sexuality and freedom

Samia Elloumi, Sociologist

Her wedding is due to take place in two months’ time and the 28-year-old is worried that her husband will find out she is not a virgin.

She has come here to turn back the clock but is concerned that at some point in the future the truth may come out.

“I might one day inadvertently betray myself in a conversation with my husband,” she says. “Or my husband may have… suspicions.”

Pressure

There have been some reports of young women here being divorced shortly after marrying because their husbands suspected they were not virgins.

Yasmine was born into a liberal family and spent many years living abroad. She fears her fiancé will cancel their wedding if he knows the truth about her sexual history.

“I had an affair once with a man,” she says. “At that time, I couldn’t imagine how huge the pressure was in my society and what the consequences could be.

“So now I am afraid. If I reveal this to my fiancé, I’m quite sure our wedding will be cancelled.”

Yasmine will now have to pay almost $400 (£310) for the procedure, which will take about 30 minutes. She has been saving up the money for several months, keeping it secret from her family and her fiancé.

The doctor who will carry out the procedure for Yasmine is a gynaecologist, whom we will call Rachid. He does two hymenoplasties a week, on average.

Rachid says 99% of his patients are motivated by the fear that they might otherwise bring shame to their family and relatives.

Many, like Yasmine, are seeking to disguise the fact that they are not virgins.

But hymens can tear for other reasons too, such as tampon use, leaving women worried that they may be accused, falsely, of having had sex before marriage.

“Gynaecologists do hymen repair. This is nothing exceptional,” Rachid says. “But here some doctors refuse to do it. I personally do it because I disagree with those who make virginity a sort of sacred thing.

“It really annoys me. This is a manifestation of a male-dominated society covered up in some religious principles. I mean it when I say it’s male dominance and I’ll continue to wage an all-out war against it.”

‘Hypocritical’

Tunisia is regarded as a leader in women’s rights in North Africa but religion and tradition here dictate that young women have to remain virgins until they are married.

There is also provision in Tunisian law for divorce in cases where women are discovered not to be virgins.

Sociologist Samia Elloumi says: “In this Tunisian society, which is an open society, we are becoming hypocritical.

“There is a sort of predominant social conservatism which is hard to justify because we claim to live in a modern society. But there’s not much modernity when it comes to women’s sexuality and freedom.”

At a public university, I meet Hichem. The 29-year-old student is getting married next year. I ask him if he cares whether his fiancée is a virgin.

“For me it’s very, very important,” he says.

“If I find out that she’s not a virgin after the wedding, I’ll never trust her again. I’ll consider it a betrayal. And I don’t believe in hymenoplasty operations. I don’t think it works.”

Sitting next to him is Radhouam, another student. He says that Tunisian tradition is too harsh on women.

“For me, this is pure hypocrisy,” he says. “Young men can freely have sex before marriage, so why do we blame young girls when they do so?”

Good write-up...
I actually had a student in my class (years ago) who was the result of "fetal alcohol syndrome".....
He literally looked like an alien (not to be rude) & kids made fun of him all of the time. I had to constantly reprimand the kids.
I loved that little boy....and he was adorable...well-mannered....sweet.
But he was developmentally delayed....verbally, and cognitively.
He could not even write his own name and had to be placed in special education classes.
So it's very real.....people need to truly be cognizant of that.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can subtly influence the way a baby’s face is formed, researchers have found.

The finding includes even drinking at low levels such as the occasional drink.

Using a 3D facial analysis, features observed were subtle and not visible to the naked eye, being less than 2mm.

However, the researchers did observe small changes to the mid-face – the nose, lips and eyes – of babies who were exposed to any alcohol from the first trimester of pregnancy.

According to Mirror, the findings which researchers said also raises questions about brain development – come out of a study of 415 babies who had 3D photographs taken of their faces at the age of one.

Researchers at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute asked the mums of the babies about their drinking habits before and during their pregnancies.

The differences between children exposed or not to alcohol were analysed with the Medical Imaging Research Centre at the University of Leuven in Belgium.

A co-lead author, Harry Matthews, said: “We used a sophisticated 3D facial analysis technique, mapping something like 7,000 individual dot points on the face.”

One of the study’s lead authors, Evi Muggli, said: “We know that alcohol use in pregnancy contributes to how the face is formed in the womb.

“We found when analysing the detailed images in our study, that any alcohol in pregnancy, even low amounts can subtly influence facial development.”

Advice for mums-to-be

The safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all if you are trying to conceive, could conceive or are already pregnant.

If you did consume alcohol before you knew it was best to avoid it, the risk of your baby being harmed is very low.

Talk to your GP, obstetrician or midwife about any concerns you may have.

Source: http://www.freshpointnews.com/2017/06/10/inspiring-story-of-a-man-who-toiled-to-educate-his-daughters/

This story got me teary eyed. Its an inspiring story of a man who gave his all, so his daughters could live with dignity, something he never had. Story is told by photojournalist GMB Akash on his Facebook wall and its touching hearts all over the world.

“I never told my children what my job was. I never wanted them to feel ashamed because of me. When my youngest daughter asked me what I did, I used to tell her hesitantly that I was a labourer. Before I went back home every day, I used to take bath in public toilets so they did not get any hint of the work I was doing. I wanted to send my daughters to school, to educate them. I wanted them to stand in front of people with dignity. I never wanted anyone to look down upon them like how everyone did to me. People always humiliated me. I invested every penny of my earnings for my daughters’ education. I never bought a new shirt, instead used the money for buying books for them. Respect, which is all I wanted them to earn for me. I was a cleaner.

The day before the last date of my daughter’s college admission, I could not manage to get her admission fees. I could not work that day. I was sitting beside the rubbish, trying hard to hide my tears. All my coworkers were looking at me but no one came to speak to me. I had failed and felt heartbroken. I had no idea how to face my daughter who would ask me about the admission fees once I got back home. I am born poor. I believed nothing good can happen to a poor person.

After work all the cleaners came to me, sat beside and asked if I considered them as brothers. Before I could answer, they handed me their one day’s income. When I tried to refuse everyone; they confronted by saying, ‘We will starve today if needed but our daughter has to go to college.’ I couldn’t reply them. That day I did not take a shower, I went back to my house like a cleaner.

My daughter is going to finish her University very soon. Three of them do not let me go to work anymore. She has a part time job and three of them do tuition. But often she takes me to my working place. Feed all my coworkers along with me. They laugh and ask her why she feeds them so often. My daughter told them, ‘All of you starved for me that day so I can become what I am today, pray for me that I can feed you all, every day.’

Now a days I don’t feel like I am a poor man. Whoever has such children, how can he be poor!” – Idris

Health7 Ways Sleep Can Help You Lose Weight by effoi(op): 7:31am On Jun 11, 2017
Source: http://www.freshpointnews.com/2017/06/10/7-ways-sleep-can-help-you-lose-weight/

If you’re trying to lose weight, the amount of sleep you get may be just as importantas your diet and exercise.

Unfortunately, many people aren’t getting enough sleep. In fact, about 30% of adults are sleeping fewer than six hours most nights, according to a study of US adults.

Interestingly, mounting evidence shows that sleep may be the missing factor for many people who are struggling to lose weight.

Here are seven reasons why getting enough sleep may help you lose weight.

1. Poor Sleep Is a Major Risk Factor for Weight Gain and Obesity
Poor sleep has repeatedly been linked to a higher body mass index (BMI) and weight gain .

People’s sleep requirements vary, but, generally speaking, research has observed changes in weight when people get fewer than seven hours of sleep a night.

A major review found that short sleep duration increased the likelihood of obesity by 89% in children and 55% in adults.

Another study followed about 60,000 non-obese nurses for 16 years. At the end of the study, the nurses who slept five or fewer hours per night were 15% more likely to be obese than those who slept at least seven hours a night .

While these studies were all observational, weight gain has also been seen in experimental sleep deprivation studies.

One study allowed 16 adults just five hours of sleep per night for five nights. They gained an average of 1.8 pounds (0.82 kg) over the short course of this study.

Additionally, many sleep disorders, like sleep apnea, are worsened by weight gain.

It’s a vicious cycle that can be hard to escape. Poor sleep can cause weight gain, which can cause sleep quality to decrease even further.

2. Poor Sleep Can Increase Your Appetite
Many studies have found that people who are sleep-deprived report increased appetites.

This is likely caused by the impact of sleep on two important hunger hormones, ghrelin and leptin.

Ghrelin is a hormone released in the stomach that signals hunger in the brain. Levels are high before you eat, which is when the stomach is empty, and low after you eat.

Leptin is a hormone released from fat cells. It suppresses hunger and signals fullness in the brain.

When you do not get adequate sleep, the body makes more ghrelin and less leptin, leaving you hungry and increasing your appetite.

A study of over 1,000 people found that those who slept for short durations had 14.9% higher ghrelin levels and 15.5% lower leptin levels than those who got adequate sleep.

The short sleepers also had higher BMIs.

In addition, the hormone cortisol is higher when you do not get adequate sleep. Cortisol is a stress hormone that may also increase appetite.

3. Sleep Helps You Fight Cravings and Make Healthy Choices
Lack of sleep actually alters the way your brain works. This may make it harder to make healthy choices and resist tempting foods.

Sleep deprivation will actually dull activity in the frontal lobe of the brain. The frontal lobe is in charge of decision-making and self-control.

In addition, it appears that the reward centers of the brain are more stimulated by food when you are sleep deprived.

Therefore, after a night of poor sleep, not only is that bowl of ice cream more rewarding, but you’ll likely have a harder time practicing self-control.

Furthermore, research has found that lack of sleep can increase your affinity for foods that are high in calories, carbs and Fat.

A study of 12 men observed the effects of sleep deprivation on food intake.

When participants were only allowed four hours of sleep, their calorie intake increased by 22%, and their fat intake almost doubled, compared to when they were allowed eight hours of sleep.

4. Poor Sleep Can Increase Your Calorie Intake
People who get poor sleep tend to consume more calories.

A study of 12 men found that when participants were allowed only four hours of sleep, they ate an average of 559 more calories the following day, compared to when they were allowed eight hours.

This increase in calories may be due to increased appetite and poor food choices, as mentioned above.

However, it may also simply be from an increase in the time spent awake and available to eat. This is especially true when the time awake is spent being inactive, like watching television.

Furthermore, some studies on sleep deprivation have found that a large portion of the excess calories were consumed as snacks after dinner.

Poor sleep can also increase your calorie intake by affecting your ability to control your portion sizes.

This was demonstrated in a study on 16 men. Participants were either allowed to sleep for eight hours, or kept awake all night. In the morning, they completed a computer-based task where they had to select portion sizes of different foods.

The ones who stayed awake all night selected bigger portion sizes, reported they had increased hunger and had higher levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin.

5. Poor Sleep May Decrease Your Resting Metabolism
Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns when you’re completely at rest. It’s affected by age, weight, height, sex and muscle mass.

Research indicates that sleep deprivation may lower your RMR.

In one study, 15 men were kept awake for 24 hours. Afterward, their RMR was 5% lower than after a normal night’s rest, and their metabolic rate after eating was 20% lower.

On the contrary, some studies have found no changes in metabolism with sleep loss. Therefore, more research is needed to determine if and how sleep loss slows metabolism.

It also seems that poor sleep can cause muscle loss. Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does, so when muscle is lost, resting metabolic rates decrease.

One study put 10 overweight adults on a 14-day diet of moderate calorie restriction. Participants were allowed either 8.5 or 5.5 hours to sleep.

Both groups lost weight from both fat and muscle, but the ones who were given only 5.5 hours to sleep lost less weight from fat and more from muscle.

A 22-pound (10-kg) loss of muscle mass could lower your RMR by an estimated 100 calories per day .

6. Sleep Can Enhance Physical Activity
A Pair of Grey Running Shoes

A lack of sleep can cause daytime fatigue, making you less likely and less motivated to exercise.

In addition, you’re more likely to get tired earlier during physical activity.

A study done on 15 men found that when participants were sleep-deprived, the amount and intensity of their physical activity decreased.

The good news is that getting more sleep may help improve your athletic performance.

In one study, college basketball players were asked to spend 10 hours in bed each night for five to seven weeks. They became faster, their reaction times decreased, their accuracy increased and their fatigue levels decreased.

7. It Helps Prevent Insulin Resistance
Poor sleep can cause cells to become insulin resistant.

Insulin is a hormone that moves sugar from the bloodstream into your body’s cells to be used as energy.

When cells become insulin resistant, more sugar remains in the bloodstream and the body produces more insulin to compensate.

The excess insulin makes you hungrier and tells the body to store more calories as fat. Insulin resistance is a precursor for both type 2 diabetes and weight gain.

In one study, 11 men were allowed only four hours of sleep for six nights. After this, their bodies’ ability to break down sugar lowered by 40%.

This suggests that only a few nights of poor sleep can cause cells to become insulin resistant.

Along with eating right and exercising, getting quality sleep is an important part of weight maintenance.

Poor sleep dramatically alters the way the body responds to food.

The hormones that control appetite are not as effective and you are less likely to resist temptations and control portions.

To make matters worse, it can become a vicious cycle. The less you sleep, the more weight you gain, and the more weight you gain, the harder it is to sleep.

On the flip side, establishing healthy sleep habits can help your body maintain a healthy weight.

HealthDrinking Red Wine Comes With Health Benefits by effoi(op): 12:14pm On Jun 02, 2017
Source: http://www.freshpointnews.com/2017/06/02/drinking-red-wine-comes-with-health-benefits/

Red wine can improve health and increase longevity research has shown.Researchers have found that red wines rich in flavonoids are very good for our health. Flavonoids are best known for their antioxidant qualities and assists the body in resisting allergens, viruses and carcinogens.

Red wines also contain anxioxidants which is helps the body resist cancer and cardiovascular disease. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir contain the highest concentrations of antioxidants and flavonoids.

White wines also contain flavonoids but not as much as red wines. We should stick to dryer red wines as they are most beneficial to health.

Paracelsus, the noted 16th-century Swiss physician wrote, “Wine is a food, a medicine and a poison – it’s just a question of dose.” It is really important that we don’t over indulge in it as too much alcohol is harmful to the body, a glass of red wine to our daily diet is enough.Too much wine can be detrimental to health.

Cardiovascular expert, Professor Roger Corder, has spent years studying the evidence of health benefits from red wine. In his new book, “The Wine Diet,” he says he is convinced that most of us should include red wine in our every day lifestyle.

Corder discovered what he eventually labeled the “French Paradox.” Specifically, he wondered why the French have a lower rate of heart disease despite the fact that their diet was extremely rich in fats.

He concentrated his research on the southwest portion of France, where life expectancy seemed to be highest. He discovered that the region produces very tannic local wines, which contain the highest procyanidin (antioxidant) content of any wines, worldwide. This led him to further research on the amazing medical benefits of red wine.

While wine may not be man’s ultimate elixir or fountain of youth, it certainly behooves us to consider adding a glass of wine or two to our daily diet – and raise a “toast” to our continued good health.
