May God almighty forgive us all and including the dead. Sometimes when armed robbers kill this policemen I find it difficult to sympathize with them Cuz countless numbers of breadwinners had been brutally shot dead by this useless trigger happy policemen. Apart from the present day government, Nigerian police had been another source of shame to the federation. May God almighty deliver this nation and I am pretty sure they will go unpunished for this stupidity |

Fresh facts have emerged on how President Goodluck Jonathan met former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Yola, Adamawa State, on Monday night. It was learnt in Abuja on Tuesday that the President, in company with some of his security personnel and aides, paid an unscheduled visit to Abubakar’s private residence. The PUNCH learnt that the President arrived at the former VP’s residence a few minutes to midnight at a time his guest had already retired for the day. Abubakar’s security team, made up of policemen and private guards, were said to have been jolted into action when they saw the long convoy of vehicles from the presidential fleet. Abubakar’s aides were said to have recognised some of the people in the President’s team before sighting the vehicle conveying Jonathan. It was learnt that the President’s advance party merely confirmed that the former Vice President was at home and relayed their findings to the President before he set out for the meeting. Abubakar’s men were said to have been confused about how to wake up their principal. A close family member was said to have been contacted to undertake the task, which he did without an incident. A member of the ex-VP team, who was privy to the encounter, explained that after the exchange of pleasantries, the two men went into a closed session. He said, “The Turakin Adamawa was surprised by the visit largely due to the fact that, one, he was not expecting it. “Two, long before Vice President Atiku left the PDP finally, the President had asked for audience with him in his Asokoro residence, in Abuja, prompting him to cancel all engagements only for the President to stand him up without even the courtesy of an explanation or an apology. “This time around, the President chose to make it a surprise visit. Well, from what transpired it is glaring that Atiku is not buying any of Jonathan’s explanations or proposals.” www.punchng.com/news/how-jonathan-met-atiku-in-yola

According to Lorii Myers in her book, No Excuses, The Fit Mind-Fit Body Strategy Book, “True sportsmanship is knowing that you need your opponent because without him or her, there is no game; acknowledging that your opponent holds the same deep-rooted aspirations and expectations as you and knowing that, win or lose, you will walk off the course with pride.” Nothing is more apt to describe what Nigerian politicians truly need ahead of the fast-approaching March 28 and April 11 elections: the spirit of true sportsmanship. Our political leaders need to know and educate their followers that at end of the polls, just like in sports contests, a winner is bound to emerge. But that has not been the case mostly in Nigeria ahead of the elections, which were initially scheduled for February but had to be shifted due to several reasons ranging from insecurity to uneven distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards. Instead, the polity has been heated, with politicians throwing accusations and counter-accusations towards the opposite camps. In some cases, they have even had to resort to washing their dirty linen in public. However, for a country that would hopefully be celebrating 16 years of uninterrupted democracy on May 29, the onus lies also on the electorate to ensure the country does not return to the unpleasant days of the military era. The Independent National Electoral Commission, which is going to act as the referee of the contests (elections), must enforce the rules and ensure that the contestants and their supporters play by them. The desperation of politicians to win elections at all cost has been due to selfish reasons other than national interests. Some of them see election into government positions as an opportunity to loot the treasury. At last year’s governorship election in Ekiti State, where the incumbent and All Progressive Congress candidate, Kayode Fayemi, lost to the Peoples Democratic Party’s Ayodele Fayose, political observers were pleased, if not shocked by the reaction of Fayemi, who congratulated his opponent, on the announcement of the results by INEC. It was shocking because Nigerian politicians had mostly portrayed themselves as bad losers in recent times. Hardly would you find an election where the loser would not resort to the law court to contest the decision of INEC. Of course, Fayemi’s action not only went a long way in erasing the notion that all Nigerian politicians were bad losers, it also helped in quelling tempers in the South-West state. Indeed, according to INEC, the staging of a free, fair and credible election is not the responsibility of the electoral management body alone but the duty of every Nigerian. Both the leaders and the led should conduct themselves in ways that would make every Nigerian safe after the elections. Clashes between supporters of some of the political parties have necessitated the signing of a peace accord in Abuja by the presidential candidates of all the political parties before, during and after the polls. The candidates should thus ensure that that they keep to the terms of the agreement. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the International Olympic Committee founder and father of the modern Games, once said, “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” This should serve as food for thought for Nigerian politicians. Irrespective of who wins at the forthcoming elections, every Nigerian should see themselves as winners and this can only be done, when the winners at the polls run an all-inclusive government that would make good use of the opposition, rather than seeing them as enemies. In sports, just like in life, you win some and lose some. That is why great football archrivals like Real Madrid/Atletico Madrid and Manchester United/Manchester City players exchange jerseys and give themselves pats on the back at the end of highly-explosive games. Rather than exchange gunfire, politicians vying for elective posts should take a cue from sportsmen by exchanging hugs on judgment day, when the results of winners and losers alike, would be announced. www.punchng.com/news/politicians-need-spirit-of-sportsmanship
