Politics › Jega Faults IGP, Says No Law Bars Waiting After Voting by efilefun(op): 8:48pm On Mar 21, 2015
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, and the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Friday clashed over the police chief’s “vote and go home order.”

While the IGP had warned voters to go back to their homes after casting their votes on election days, Jega said the electoral law did not state that voters could not or should not wait to watch and ensure that their votes count.

The IGP, who addressed accredited observers for the forthcoming general elections in Abuja, said the possibility of committing electoral offence was very high if voters stayed back at the polling booths for votes to be counted.

He said that each polling unit would have at least two or three policemen to protect votes cast by the electorate.

“We will go on to protect the electorate. Every eligible voter should feel safe enough to cast his votes. We will be there to protect the votes and make sure no one disrupts the process,” Abba said

But Jega disagreed with the police chief.

The INEC chairman, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, said there is no part of the Electoral Act that forbids voters from waiting at the polling booths, adding that the law was only against loitering.

Also, Jega’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kayode Idowu, stressed the position of the commission’s boss, adding that no law bars voters from staying around polling centres.

He said, “Jega did not contradict the IGP; he did not contradict anything that is in the law and what the IGP said. What the IGP said was that this regulation of INEC that says people can stay back in polling units, that he is uncomfortable about it because the Electoral Act provides that anybody who loiters around the polling units or commits an electoral offence can be prosecuted.

“He said if you stay at the polling unit, there is a very high chance that you will commit an electoral offense. People who loiter within the polling units do not have legitimate business.

“That was exactly what Jega said, that if you want to stay, you must stay on the condition that your conduct will not constitute an electoral offense. You will not abuse people, you will not be aggressive towards people, you will be calm and you will not be unruly. As such, the security agents will not apprehend you.”

However, the All Progressives Congress tackled the IGP over the “unlawful order.”

In a statement in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party asked voters to rather listen to Jega and stayed behind to protect their votes after casting their ballots.

The statement read, “According to Jega, who appeared on Channels TV on Friday morning, the electoral law says anyone that has no business with the electoral process at the polling booths but desires to monitor events should stay at least some metres away from the polling agents and completely away from the ballot box after casting their votes.

“‘The INEC Chairman further clarified that all registered voters have businesses with the process and can therefore not be classified as people that don’t have businesses at polling units.

“Therefore, the IGP has no constitutional right or powers under the constitution or Police Act to rewrite the electoral law. The role of the police is to maintain law and order or such other assistance as may be sought from the police by INEC.”

Politics › Video: PDP members in Akpabio's LGA (Essien Udim) in Akwa Ibom defects to APC by efilefun(op):
Essien Udim (Akpabio's LGA): APC rally and its significance

By Effiong Essien

In early February intelligence filtered through that Essien Udim was waiting with bated breath to host APC campaign stop in Afaha Ikot Ebok. It sounded quite improbable. A few checks pointed to a confirmation of the upbeat prospect. That made it even more unlikely.

Essien Udim is the home of the state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, who has dismissed the APC as unwanted and unloved and applied unimaginable pressure to squash the party in the state. He has also gone to any length imaginable to boast that Akwa Ibom is a PDP state where he would deliver 100% of votes cast in March and April to the party.

By midweek, Mr Umana Okon Umana, APC governorship candidate for the state, had gone on a consultation visit to the local council area. What happened was effervescent in terms of emotional support and overflow of goodwill for APC from the people of Essien Udim. It appeared too good to be true.

If nearly everyone wanted APC in Essien Udim, what happened to the much vaunted love of the people for their uncommon son who has uncommonly transformed their land and lives? Questions and more questions!

Then APC campaign council gave notice that its campaign train would stop over at Essien Udim during the weekend. By Friday, the tabloids in Uyo and a national newspaper were replete with details of a blood-churning plot by officials of the state government, all members of the PDP, to attack the APC rally in Essien Udim and use it as excuse to foment trouble and throw the state into a crisis. That would offer the PDP and its government a perfect condition to arrest leaders of the party, including its governorship candidate, Mr Umana Okon Umana. Tension began to mount in the state. No one was certain what would happen in Essien Udim as party faithful huddled up to say prayers of thanksgiving and protection before setting out, first to Obot Akara and thence to Essien Udim in the morning of Saturday, 14 March.

As it turned out it was a hugely successful tour. At Obot Akara, the king of the area, HRM Okuku Uwaumoh Adiaka JP III blessed the APC governorship candidate, and said he as the monarch of Obot Akara was leading his people to support Umana because he was the person Governor Akpabio introduced to him as the next governor of the state after Akpabio’s tenure. He assured his guests that the party train was safe.

The rally that followed the visit to the monarch was eye-popping. Even cripples made their way to the arena and gyrated with able-bodied people till the end.

At Essien Udim the incredible happened. The local government headquarters was taken over by APC supporters. They thronged the rally venue in their thousands. They sang and danced and declared Essien Udim an APC enclave. They staged a mock funeral of the PDP and interred its despicable remains.

In both Obot Akara and Essien Udim, about 10,000 decamped from the PDP to the APC, among them the leading lights of politics in the area, Abom Tony Esu and Chief Isong isonguyo.

It was truly surreal, Essien Udim, home to the Akpabio family, standing still for Umana and APC!

This must be the biggest proof of the saying that the dancer does not know how well he is twirling and twisting. Only the onlookers do. Those were the people who told Governor Akpabio yesterday in Essien Udim that he’s not been twirling and twisting well for them these past eight years.

PDP members in Akpabio's LGA (Essien Udim) in Akwa Ibom buried PDP themselves and embraced APC. RIP PDP. ...!!!

For those who want to travel out to look for greener pasture, the exchange rate will guide you. For instance, if you carry 2,000,000,000 cedis from Ghana to Nigeria, don't be surprised when you are given just N30,000 as exchanged value.

But try South Africa, it is more of living in UK. The exchange rate is favourable.
