Politics › Nigerians Eat Too Much Rice, That’s Why It Is Expensive – Audu Ogbeh by Ekakamba(op): 9:18am On Sep 17, 2016

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, on Wednesday in Abuja said Nigerian businessmen demanded 2.5 billion dollars (about N492 billion) a week for importation of goods and services into the country.

Ogbeh made this known in a meeting with officials of VICAMPRO, an indigenous Agro Company investing in production of Irish Potato on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that the ministry was willing to support local investors with capacity to produce goods and save the country’s foreign exchange.

He said that the consumption of rice in the country was rising and that a lot of people were not aware that the rice had some degree of arsenic.

The minister said that consuming rice in large quantity on a regular basis was a bit of health risk, adding that substituting it with potato would be welcomed development.

“The volume of importation of virtually everything into this country is too much.

“The demand for dollars in this country as at today is 2.5 billion a week; this is the quantum of dollars Nigerians are asking for to import things.

“Since 1986, we began this habit of importing everything and doing virtually nothing at home to sustain ourselves; now, we do not have the dollars and people are very hungry.

“This day was coming anyway, no matter who was in power; we have the most ridiculous method of devaluing our currency; every week, we auction the dollar and naira goes up.

“We sat and were hoping that by devaluation, we are going to arrive at Eldorado; if we continue like this, it will be a thousand naira to a dollar,’’ he said.

While commending the investor, Ogbeh said that any private sector effort that would develop local production of goods would be fully supported by the ministry.

“We should aggressively take the West African market; there is no reason why we should allow Irish potato from Ireland and France and Belgium into West Africa; it is the same story with onions.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of VICAMPRO, Mr Michael Agbogo, said that potato could bring value worth over one trillion naira annually if properly harnessed.

He said that potato was the fourth most important crop in the world and that a barrel of oil was an equivalent of 14 kilogrammes of potatoes.

According to Agbogo, while current price of crude oil will fetch the country about #16,000 per barrel, the equivalent in potato will fetch the country #39,000.

He said that in terms of value, potato had three times the value of crude oil, adding that it was a huge industry the country could get into.

Agbogo said that Egypt and Algeria were the leading potato producing countries in Africa, with Egypt producing four million tonnes annually from about 100,000 hectares of land.

He said that Nigeria, which had close to 500,000 hectares, was struggling to produce one million tonnes of potato per annum.

I don't appreciate this idea of the presidency apportioning blame for every error and taking the glory for every success. That's a very poor leadership quality.

1. Sleeping alone is better than sharing your BED with someone who shares a BED with
someone else when you are not around...!

2. Cheating does not mean you have to kiss,
meet or have sex with a third party. Once you
find yourself deleting texts and e-mails so
that your partner will not see them, you are already there.

3. If a man is crazy about you, pray he does not get well, if he is getting well, know that another woman is giving him some tablets.

4. First love may not die, but true love can
bury it.

5. If you still believe "LOVE IS BLIND" then I
know for sure MARRIAGE WILL OPEN IT FOR YOU.

6. A woman's beautiful face attracts a flirt; A
woman's beautiful heart attracts a lover; A
woman's beautiful character attracts a man.

7. Never you fall in love because you are lonely,
fall in love because you are ready.

8. A blessed water is better than a cursed
fried rice. A Godly poor man is far much better
than an angry rich man in marriage.

9. I will rather have you stay in your father's
house that you are sure of, than pack into a man's house you are not sure of.

10. Most men base their capacity of manhood
and their abilities to fertilize ovaries and
produce children. Any man can impregnate a
woman. The real deal is HOW MANY MEN
CAN BE THE FATHER TO THEIR CHILDREN, not promoters of ABORTION?

11. HOLY Wives do not just speak in tongues,
they MANAGE their homes, make SUPER
meals, raise GODLY kids, and finally they
bring out the KING in their man.

12. When you tend to your garden diligently
you will be the one to reap the fruit of the vine

13. You can say "sorry" a million times, say "I
love you" as much as you want, say whatever you want, but if you are not going to prove that
the things you say are true, then do not say
anything at all. Because if you cannot show it,
your words do not mean a thing.

14. Never you lie in order to satisfy somebody for
a moment, because the pain that you cause
them in the future can last them for a lifetime.

Nairaland General › South African Universities To Offer Bsc Witchcraft by Ekakamba(op): 11:25pm On Sep 16, 2016

The South African Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande has announced plans to have witchcraft included in the curriculum from 2018.

Speaking to representatives from student unions around the country, the minister announced the shocking move and urged future university entrees to consider taking Witchcraft. “There is a lot we can learn from witchcraft, like how they fly in that winnowing basket. Imagine if we learn that skill. It will eradicate traffic jams and everyone will just get in their basket and fly. It also means we will not be importing fuel anymore.” Blade said.

The announcement was met with boos and bottle throws from the packed auditorium who had gone to the meeting hoping the minister would announce a 0% fee increase for the coming year. The unperturbed minister also invited renowned witches to make an appointment with his office so they can have their skills tested and those outstanding would then be hired as lecturers.

He also invited witches from across the border, promising them permanent residents permits. “I spoke to Gibs (Minister of Home affairs Malusi Gigaba) and he agreed to issue witches from outside South Africa with permanent residence permits. I heard Malawi and Zimbabwe have an impressive collection of witches. We are hoping they will heed the call”, he added.

Applications is said to be closing on the 30th of September at midnight, after which an appointed panel with conduct interviews. There currently is an opening for 109 witches.

Crime › New Boko Haram Video Is Fake, Adulterated, Nigerian Military Says by Ekakamba(op): 10:51pm On Sep 15, 2016

The Nigeria military on Thursday said the recent video released by Boko Haram, in which thousands of the insurgents were shown celebrating Eidel Kabir, was manipulated and not a true representation of the current state of the group.
Boko Haram on Wednesday released a YouTube video in which they boasted of their membership strength and also threatened to get at the Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Defence Headquarters in a statement said the video was a ‘photoshop’ of an older video released by the group in 2014.
In the statement signed by the Acting Director Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, the military said “the video clip is a complete show of weakness and sign that the end is near for the insurgents, hence it does not in any way poses threat to us.”
Mr. Abubakar, a Brigadier General, said the Nigerian military is ready to sustain its hostility against the insurgents. He called on the insurgents to take the path of peace by surrendering.
“While our operation will continue as planned with many terrorists already surrendering and may captives rescued, we advise all the remaining surviving Boko Haram terrorists to surrender now for their own good”, he said.
Boko Haram seeks to rule Northern Nigeria by enforcing strict Sharia law. Its activities have caused the death of about 20,000 persons and displacement of about two million others, mostly women and children.
