Details of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group lost his left in a shootout with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday Sept. 17 emerged yesterday with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops.Vanguard gathered that when the first attack on Konduga whereby hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting and several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have routed the troops.Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their cooperation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle hence they felt reassured.Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front.When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the all clear to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, a set of his men captured were told to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message is authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with Anti-Aircraft weapons, General Purpose Machine Guns, several AK 47 rifles and other IEDS’.However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers. Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all direction.This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both Infantry and Artillery weaponry was overpowering that of his men, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.But eagle-eyed Nigerian Soldiers spotted him and opened fire in him, shattering his legs in the process. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body leading to his bleeding to death.Recall that Military sources had on Sunday night disclosed that Nigerian troops scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17.The sources noted that during a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos was feared to have been finally killed.The sources said, “It is getting more certain that the terrorists’Commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014.”Affirming the development, PRNigeria sources said the suspected demise of the Boko Haram leader is responsible forthe scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in the neighbouring countries, especially in Cameroon noticed in recent days.The security sources noted further that “the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing” adding “He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. FORMER head of state General Muhammadu Buhari is facing an uphill task in his quest to get approved as the All Progressive Congress' (APC) presidential candidate for next year's elections after party members objected to him being selected automatically.General Buhari, 71, is one of the founders of the APC after his Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) joined forces with theAction Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigerian Peoples Party to form the party. Along with ACN leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, General Buhari is the joint godfather of the ACN and apparently had been expected to be automatically selected as its presidential candidate.However, over recent weeks, several other presidential candidates have emerged including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. They have subsequently made it clear to party leaders that adoptingGeneral Buhari as their presidential candidate is unacceptable and are insisting the party hold primary elections.In 2003, 2007 and 2011, General Buhari ran for president as the ANPP and CPC candidate but on each occasion, he was selected automatically, with rival candidates standing down for him. This time around though, due to the pressure from the likes of Alhaji Atiku, Governor Kwankwaso and Senator Bukola Saraki’s groups within the party, the APC's national publicity secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said there will be no automatic ticket handed out.Alhaji Mohammed said: “We won’t give automatic ticket to anyone, including Buhari. It is not in our constitution and all the candidates will undergo primaries.”APC leaders fear that an attempt to foist General Buhari's candidature on the party without following democratic process was likely to tear it apart. So strong is the desire for primaries, that even the Buhari camp is now resigned to the fact that their man must stand and his campaign managers are trying to pressurise other candidates to stand down for him.General Buhari himself was said to have expressed open disagreement with the modified open direct primary adopted by the APC. Osita Okechukwu, the spokesman for the Buhari Organisation, said, “Given all the indices, the APC already has ade factopresidential candidate in the person of General Muhammadu Buhari.“If you go through the constitution of the APC, under Article 20, it says for nomination of candidate either for party offices or presidential election, you first explore consensus. If an agreement is reached through consensus, it has to be affirmed."Other party members, however, insist that disregarding the democratic process in the choice of party presidential flagbearer could drag the APC into deep and possibly irreparable political damage. One APC senior figure warned that party members should not be reduced to slaves and sheepishly expected to sign the dotted lines if confronted withthe nauseating idea of automatic ticket.However, Mr Okechukwu added: "If we go through that method, though we have a lot of good quality people in the APC, I do not know of any person who the leadership of the APC would tell Buhari to step down for.”According to Rotimi Fashakin a former CPC spokesman, however, only General Buhari had the clout to defeat PresidentGoodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election. He also said that since the APC was likely going to anchor its camping on the fight against corruption, adding that General Buhari was the only candidate that the APC could use for the purpose.Mr Fashakin said: “Buhari is the face against corruption in the country. He is going to serve for only four years if he wins and we know he is not a corrupt person and Nigerians and the opposition know that it is only Buhari who can fight corruption in the country."He added that the APC does not want to go into the presidential election with a divided house. According to Mr Fashakin, General Buhari is already talking with other aspirants with the aim of convincing them to step down for him.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan got a big boost to his 2015 re-election campaign over the weekend after his People's Democratic Party (PDP) governors decided to push for a consensus presidential candidate.Over recent months, political jostling has intensified within thePDP as the 2015 elections approach and the party plans to pick its presidential candidate at a special convention next month. President Jonathan's campaigners have been touring the country seeking an automatic ticket for him but so far, Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido has signified that he will stand in the primaries.If Governor Lamido refuses to back down, it will mean there will be elections at the PDP primaries next month and President Jonathan will not get the unanimous endorsement he had been hoping for. However, if he can get the PDP governors to adopt him as a consensus candidate, it would make the elections a mere formality.State governors are the ones who select delegates to PDP conferences and conventions and if all of the party's governors adopt President Goodluck as their candidate, other contestants have little chance of getting votes. Governor Lamido for instance, would then only get the votes of Jigawa State delegates.Apparently, Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio, who is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, has been trying to persuade his colleagues and party leaders towards adopting a consensus candidate. He added that the plan is to keep the PDP united to confront the opposition in 2015.Although President Goodluck is yet to formally declare his candidacy, zonal rallies in his support are being held up and down the country by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria. Party sources say that the Governor's Forum is using the rallies to gauge how much support there is for President Jonathan.One PDP source said: “With the exception of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, all the PDP governors are really working towards automatic adoption of the president for second term as PDP’s consensus candidate. They want to make the presidential primaries a mere formality at the national convention of the party.“In fact, the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Chief Godswill Akpabio, is the main driver of the consensus option. If you look at the trend, most PDP governors have stayed awayfrom presidential ambitions and instead, some of them are only having aspirations for the office of vice president.”One PDP governor said that he and his colleagues have almost agreed that President Jonathan should continue in 2015.
