http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/112846-transport-operators-provide-30-new-buses-in-lagos.html Lagos State government buys new buses for intra city transportation in Lagos city. The Lagos State Government on Thursday launched 30 new luxury buses for intra city transportation in Lagos. The government also launched 10 buses last week, in addition to the existing BRT and LAGBUS fleet of buses plying the metropolis. The latest buses were launched by the Lagos Integrated Transport Cooperative Society, LASITCOS, and TRANSMODAL Nigeria Limited. LASITCOS provided 10 Tata buses, while TRANSMODAL brought in 20. The LASITCOS buses would operate along Abesan-Idimu, Ikotun-Ejigbo, Cele-Express-Oshodi-Mile 2 axis, while TRANSMODAL would ply Agbara-Okokomaiko, Mile 2-Tin Can Island and Orile to TBS. Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, said that within the first quarter of 2013, more buses would be provided by other partners in the sector. Mr. Opeifa said that a major challenge facing the operators of the buses was the non-availability of qualified drivers to sustain and maintain the vehicles. “The process of engaging a driver is very long and tedious and we have to go through this process because we do not want to go into the problem of the past. “The franchises have been going through this process to get the best drivers that would deliver the best to the people of Lagos State,” he said. The partners were given a `franchise certificates` by the Managing Director, LAGBUS Asset Management Ltd, Babatunde Disu. Mr. Disu promised Lagos residents that under the franchise, they would enjoy better, reliable, comfortable and affordable transport services. He said that although there were other commercial buses as competitors, there would be collaborative efforts to manage a good transport service to alleviate previous commuters’ hardship. Mr. Disu said that the new buses would assist in creating jobs for some of the residents. He called on other private transport organisations to partner with the state government to improve the sector.

I laugh at the way the ibos on this forum display their claimed relevance in present Nigeria politics. One thing is certain, ibos have been relegated to the minimum when it comes to presidency. The ijaws have taken their position. It might sound bitter, it is just the undiluted truth. Wonder why ibos have not been able to get the presidency for like 3 decades. You can come to this forum to type things to make yourself happy, the fact is not gonna change. |

14 December 2012 , By Olasunkanmi Akoni, Monsoor Olowoopejo Fashola commends judgement as Aturu heads to Appeal court Justice Aishat Opesanwo of Ikeja High Court Thursday upheld the constitutionality of the Lagos traffic law, saying it did not violate anybody's rights. Some commercial motorcyclists, under the aegis of All Nigeria Auto Bike Commercial Owners and Workers Association, ANACOWA, had challenged the restriction of their operations to 475 routes by the traffic law, saying that it violated their right to freedom of movement. However, Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola said: "The court has restated clearly what is the law, the responsibility for municipal management of traffic in any state can only reside in the elected authorities of that state. "The legislative power, therefore, belongs to the parliament of that state; so if parliament sits down and passes a bill into law and it follows all of the processes, governor's assent and so on, what else? "I think people, in the name of freedom and access to justice, should not just do whatever they like; I think the action challenging the constitutionality of the law in the first place was an extremely frivolous and ill-conceived action". The governor said the fact that the law was passed by the people's representatives made it binding on everyone, and urged compliance by all residents. In his coments, Mr Ade Ipaye, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said the ordinary people of the state were the winners of the court's decision. "If there is any winner at all, it is the good people of Lagos who desire to commute in a safe and secure environment. "It is also a relief to have legal confirmation of the sensible fact a state House of Assembly has powers to make laws, regulating conduct on every road within the state's territory," he said. Okada Riders in operation... Mr Kayode Opeifa, Commissioner for Transportation, commended the decision of the motorcycle operators to challenge the law in the court. Opeifa said it was their constitutional right, adding that the operators should partner with the state government in putting an efficient and sustainable transportation system in the state. He encouraged the operators to take advantage of the various skill acquisition programmes put in place by the government for them to be productive. The Lagos Traffic Law was promulgated on Aug. 2. Apart from restricting operations of commercial motorcyclists, it also prohibits making phone calls while driving. Governor Babatunde Fashola has commended the court ruling upholding the constitutionality of the Lagos Traffic Law, saying the verdict was in the best interest of the residents. Speaking with newsmen after the judgment, Fashola said the decision of the court had justified the state government's stance that municipal traffic management was the sole responsibility of the state. He said the government explored the normal procedures in promulgating the law, adding that those who had challenged the constitutionality of the legislation had only embarked on a futile exercise. The lead Counsel to All Nigerians Autobike Commercial Owners and Workers Association, ANACOWA, parent body of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called "Okada Riders". Mr Bamidele Aturu, has vowed to appeal yesterday's judgment in favour of Lagos State government, saying he would be seeking redress on behalf of is clients at the Court of Appeal. A statement by Aturu read thus: "The High Court of Lagos State, yesterday, dismissed the suit filed by ANACOWA on behalf of commercial motorcyclists. While we respect the decision of the judge as a court of law, we disagree with the decision and we shall promptly seek redress on behalf of our clients at the Court of Appeal. "As we have relentlessly made clear we do not think it is right to argue that there are no federal trunk roads in Lagos State as this may encourage the Federal Government to abandon maintenance of roads that we all know to be federal roads. This is what we meant when we argued that Lagos State government was pursuing a pyrrhic victory by the argument. "We salute the doggedness of our clients and their respect for the rule of law. They have shown very remarkably that we will not build democracy if we fail to challenge or test policies and laws of governments at all levels. "We know that this is not the end of the matter. Citizens have many options at their disposal for challenging policies that they consider destructive of the ends of democracy and their existence. We shall leave our clients with the decision, while we pursue their appeal speedily." http://allafrica.com/stories/201212140251.html/ |

Babatunde Raji Fashola, Lagos state governor, center, rolls a dice during the presentation of a Lagos-themed Monopoly board game in Lagos, Nigeria, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012.

http://bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-20681168 The first African city edition of the famous board game Monopoly has been launched in Lagos. The Nigerian metropolis is one of the fast-growing cities in the world. The board's layout was unveiled at an event in Lagos City Hall, with the manmade Banana Island named as the upmarket equivalent of Mayfair in the London edition. Makoko, the slum on stilts over the city's lagoon, is the cheapest property for sale on the Lagos board. Bribes Nimi Akinkugbe, the head of Bestman Games which is producing the Lagos edition, told Nigeria's Guardian newspaper ahead of the launch that suggestions for the Mayfair spot were "a hot topic". The BBC's Tomi Oladipo in Lagos says Banana Island, which got the coveted position, is an artificially created island where the very wealthy reside. Some properties on the island sell for about $8m (£4.9m) - and it would cost about $150,000 a year to rent a flat there, he says. The Nigerian Stock Exchange, Murtala Muhammed International Airport and several hotels are other properties on the board. Many of the squares are sponsored by banks and shopping centres and even the Lagos state government appears, while some major landmarks like Tinubu Square, the New Afrika Shrine nightclub, Third Mainland Bridge and the National Theatre have been left out, our correspondent says. Other aspects of the game have been tailored for Lagos, like the "Go To Jail" cards, which read: "Go to jail. Go directly to Kirikiri jail," referring to the city's maximum security prison. Our reporters says one of the Chance cards issuing a fine quotes a phrase regularly used by police officers: "Park! Park! For reckless driving pay a fine... and register for retraining." Another reads: "For attempting to bribe a law enforcement agent, pay a fine." Some of the new traffic laws introduced by the Lagos state government, and the punishments for various offences, have also been included in the game, our reporter says. "You've been caught driving against traffic. Report for psychiatric evaluation," one card reads. The Monopoly game was developed in the US, originally based on streets in Atlantic City. A London version of the game was produced in 1935. "Lagos is the first African city to have its Monopoly. Two countries in Africa have theirs, Morocco and South Africa. But there's no city that has its own customised edition," Ms Akinkugbe told the Guardian.
