Politics / PDP Elders Claim Jonathan Traded Bayelsa To Free Himself, Wife From Prosecution by Elibrainz(m): 7:59am On Nov 25, 2019
A group, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Elders Forum has expressed deep worry over the conduct of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the November 16 Bayelsa governorship election.

David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared winner of the election which the PDP had insisted was rigged in favour APC backed by the Federal Government.

The PDP Elders Forum in a statement issued by its Chairman Chief Benson Odoko in Yenagoa criticized the former president for openly fraternizing with the APC, the party’s main opponent in the election, noting that the former president, by his recent actions, did not leave anybody in doubt that he was supporting the APC against the very party that made him Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President and President of the country.

He said that the former president who visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja for an undisclosed mission just before the election kept his distance from the PDP and its members throughout the period of the campaigns leading to the election.

Odoko who recalled that Jonathan also refused to congratulate the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Douye Diri who served him as Commissioner for Sports when he was governor, stated that the Forum was shocked when Jonathan and his wife donated the Aridolf Hotel to the APC as the operational contact point for visiting dignitaries of the party and as the venue for the party’s controversial primaries.

The Forum’s chairman said that what was even more stupefying was the visit to President Jonathan by APC leaders shortly after the charade called election and another visit by the leader of the APC in the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the APC in the election, Chief David Lyon, and others to the Jonathans.

According to him¸he said that these actions of Jonathan clearly portrayed him as having betrayed the PDP which gave him the platform to occupy the highest positions in the country, Bayelsa State, and millions of PDP members just to protect his selfish interest.

He argued that the argument that Jonathan worked against the PDP because his preferred candidate, Chief Timi Alaibe, lost in the primaries was a pathetic perfidy meant to cover up the real reasons for this betrayal against Bayelsans and Nigerians.

Odoko called on the national leadership of the PDP to invoke disciplinary action against Jonathan for working against his party and openly celebrating an opposition victory against the party which made him president.

Business / Access Bank Breaks Record, Appoints Yet Another Female Chairman by Elibrainz(m): 7:10am On Nov 23, 2019
History was again made on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, when Access Bank Plc announced the appointment of yet another woman, Dr. (Mrs) Ajoritsedere Awosika, MFR, as its new Chairman.
To begin with, having a woman chair a bank isn’t common with Nigeria where womenfolk are conspicuously under-represented in corporate leadership, both in the private and public sectors. For example, since 1984 when the United Bank for Africa, UBA, Plc, broke a longstanding jinx in Sub-Saharan Africa by appointing as its Chairman the late Bola Kuforiji Olubi, only a scantily few banks have had the heart to try their hands on women at that level.
This includes Standard Chartered Bank Group which appointed Bola Adesola its CEO in 2013 and then its Senior Vice Chairman in 2019; Access Bank with its appointment of its outgoing Chairman in July 2015; First Bank with the appointment of its current Chairman Ibukun Awosika in September 2015; and Standard Bank Group with its appointment of Sola David-Borha as CEO African Regions in 2017.

While the rationale behind maintaining a female Chairman may not have been openly stated by the bank, this certainly would never have seen the light of day if the bank under-performed since 2015. While fielding questions from theafricareport.com earlier in June for instance on the bank’s proactive strategy towards the promotion of the advancement of women within its ranks, Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan, Director of Sustainable Development at Access Bank, said: “…there is one reason. “Women bring a good balance. In reality, they are more risk sensitive, able to concentrate better… In management, they get better results.”
True to this, theafricareport.com stated in the same report that under the leadership of Belo-Olusoga, the bank made 95 billion naira (€227m) after-tax in 2018 with a total balance sheet of 11.8bn. In addition to that, it boasts of a total of 350 branches in seven sub-Saharan countries and recently won the Africa CEO Forum’s Gender Leader Award in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
“We have established principles of sustainability, nine in all, and the fifth is dedicated to the empowerment of women. …we also need to involve men, hence the establishment of the Male Champions for Women, a group of men dedicated to these issues. We want to create an environment that is conducive to women’s participation at the highest level.
“Our philosophy, which focuses on the advancement of women, also applies to the services we offers: since July 2014, the W initiative, (“W” as in “woman”) has included products or programmes specifically designed for women, such as the W Power Loan, which addresses specific needs in three key areas: career, entrepreneurship, and family life, with, for example, loans, training courses, medical coverage, etc.,” Victor-Laniyan told theafricareport.com.

Awosika’s appointment which takes effect from January 8th, 2020, when the current Chairman, Mrs. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, will be retiring, obviously reaffirms the bank’s position on inclusiveness.
The incoming Chairman, Awosika, joined the Board in April 2013 as an Independent non-Executive Director and has been the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board Credit and Finance Committee and the Board Audit Committee respectively in addition to membership of other Board Committees.

She is an accomplished administrator with over three decades experience in public sector governance. She was at various times the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministries of Internal Affairs, Science & Technology and Power.
Dr. Awosika is a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacy. She holds a Doctorate degree in Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom.
She is the Chairman of Chams Plc and Josephine Consulting Limited, and a non-Executive Director of Capital Express Assurance Ltd.

Nairaland / General / Tipper Rams Into A Tricycle And SUV, Leaves One Dead In Ogun by Elibrainz(m): 6:21pm On Nov 22, 2019
A tipper has reportedly rammed into a tricycle and SUV in Ogun state, leaving a person dead afterwards.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, on Friday, said that one person died while three others sustained various degrees of injuries in a road accident along Idiroko Road.

Sango-Ota Area Commander of TRACE, Adekunle Ajibade, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun.

Ajibade said that the accident which happened at about 9:59 a.m. on Friday, around Iyana-Iyesi on Idiroko Road, involved a tipper, a jeep and a tricycle.

He explained that a tipper with registration number MUS 217 YL suffered a brake failure and rammed into a tricycle marked LAR 304 VD and an Acura Jeep with registration number KTU 636 DQ.

He said that four persons comprising three males and a female were involved in the accident which resulted in the death of one person, while three others sustained injuries.

“The corpse of the male victim has been deposited at the morgue of State Hospital Ota in Ogun, while the survivors are also receiving treatment at the same hospital,” Ajibade said.

He said that normalcy had been restored and the vehicles towed to the Onipanu Police, Ogun to ensure the free flow of traffic in the area.

Ajibade advised motorists and other road users to always exercise patience as the yuletide period approaches to avoid loss of lives and property.

Crime / 71 Pupils Suspended Over Attempt To Burn School In Akwa Ibom State by Elibrainz(m): 4:20pm On Nov 22, 2019
A total of 71 pupils of the Government Secondary School, Etoi in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have been suspended for allegedly attempting to burn down the school.

It was gathered that some pupils alleged to be members of a cult group took the law into their hands and vandalised the school property.

The pupils also held the Principal hostage for several hours and attacked security personnel in the school.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof Nse Essien, announced the suspension when he led some management staff of the ministry and other stakeholders in the education sector to assess the situation, with a view to proffering a lasting solution.

Expressing his dismay at the attitude of the pupils, Essien said the school was the right of everyone and it should be protected. He said the Akwa Ibom State Government would not fold its hands and allow hooligans take over the school.

The commissioner added that anybody found culpable would be severely punished.

Stressing that those who took part in the incident were not bonafide pupils of the school, he called for the cooperation of all, including the security agencies, to fish out the bad eggs.

“All the 71 pupils will be suspended indefinitely for their part in the acts of violence and insubordination, except proven otherwise.

“We got some of the names through intelligence. This measure is meant to sanitise the system and serve as deterrent to others” he said.

He added that the final-year pupils among them would have their names removed from the list of WASSCE candidates to further buttress government’s zero tolerance for indiscipline.

The commissioner blamed the teachers for the poor upbringing of the affected pupils, which he claimed had contributed to their actions.

“As teachers, it is your job to instill discipline in the pupils and to forestall a breakdown of law and order in our schools. Any teacher who is accustomed to lateness, negligence of duty and other forms of misdemeanor will face serious sanctions”, he said.

Education / Sex For Grades: Kogi Federal Varsity Investigates 12 Officials by Elibrainz(m): 7:21am On Nov 09, 2019
There is unease in the academic and non-academic circles of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, over the management of the institution’s alleged discreet investigation of some unidentified lecturers and non-academic staff for alleged sex for grades.

A source in one of the institution’s academic departments confided in our correspondent that no fewer than 12 officials of the institution, including six from the History and International Studies Department, were being investigated for indiscretion and sex with female students in exchange for grades.

The source said that one of the lecturers allegedly allowed a female student of the school to rewrite a course she failed in his house, where he also slept with her.
The investigation, said the source, is not limited to the academic departments alone, but extends to some non-academic staff members, who have perfected ways of intimidating some of the female students into sexual relationships.
The source said others from the departments of Economics and Computer Science were among those being investigated.

The source, who pleaded not to be named because the issue remained yet at the level of allegation, added that some of the female students were being pimped by some of their male colleagues who drink out with some of the lectures.

The source said: “It is a serious matter, although it remains at the level of allegation.

“There is this particular lecturer who was said to have taken a fresh exams paper home, where he allowed a female student to rewrite a failed course. The lady in question is said to be sleeping with him.
“There are several other related allegations, more of which are in the History Department. Some non-academic staff members are being investigated too.

“The investigation is going on discreetly and it appears we have a can of worms on our hands.

“Some of the male students are said to be the go-betweens in this sex for grade thing.

“Some staff are said to have gone low as to demand recharge cards and snacks from students, particularly female students, who they allot marks.

“The situation is capable of undermining academic discipline in the school hence the management felt it should be nipped in the bud.”

Health / Gastroenteritis: 11 Die In Lagos, 370 Others Being Treated by Elibrainz(m): 6:48am On Nov 09, 2019
Eleven persons have died of the 400 cases of gastroenteritis recorded in Lagos State.

According to the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, the rising number of gastroenteritis cases is due to flooding in some parts of the state.

In a statement, Abayomi said gastroenteritis cases had been reported in some local government areas, particularly in Surulere, Mushin, Ajeromi and Lagos Island since mid-October.
He, however, said the situation was under control as a result of the policies and interventions already put in place by the state government.

Of the 400 cases reported so far, the commissioner said “370 of these cases have been treated and discharged.”

He said, “Unfortunately, we have also recorded 11 deaths due to the outbreak. The increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis is not unconnected with persistent rain with flooding of some local government areas in the state.
“We have been able to send some samples to our laboratories and some of those samples tested positive for a type of cholera but we are not sure whether cholera is responsible for the entire outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.”

Abayomi further said the state Ministry of Health would send other samples to other laboratories for in-depth analysis “to see whether this is just a case of cholera or whether there are other pathogens or agents contributing to this outbreak.”
The commissioner also cautioned against the spread of misleading information about the disease outbreak and asked the residents to disregard any news about the disease that did not emanate from official channels.

Politics / 13 Illegal Fuel Stations Sealed In Akwa Ibom State by Elibrainz(m): 6:33pm On Nov 06, 2019
About 13 filling stations have been sealed off by the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Eket Field Office, in Akwa Ibom State for acts of illegality and non-renewal of licenses.

The DPR Operations Controller in the state, Mr Tamunoiminabo Kingsley-Sundaye, told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN on Wednesday in Uyo that the stations were shut during a routine surveillance on petrol stations.
Kingsley-Sundaye said the filling stations were sealed in Uyo, Essien Udim, Ikot Ekpene, Abak, Etim, Ika Local Government Areas of the state.

He explained that out of the 13 stations sealed, seven were sealed for non-approval to build or operate the stations while six did not renew their licenses.

“Seven of them do not have approval to build filling stations.

“The team of DPR on routine surveillance went out to some areas in Akwa Ibom to ensure compliance in terms of standard, safety engineering standard and operating standard,” he said.

The operations controller said that the department had given prior warning to defaulting stations but they were recalcitrant and refused to comply with guidelines and standard of operations.

“There are some people who are adamant and they feel the system is weak or the government is weak to make them to obey the law. We will continue to do what is right,” Kingsley-Sundaye assured.

He said that the department collaborated with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to arrest defaulters of oil and gas in the state in October.
He noted that after the arrest, a good number of the defaulters came back to do the right thing while two petroleum marketers, who were arrested, refused to do the right thing.

Kingsley-Sundaye added that those petroleum marketers who built filling stations without approved licenses would be sanctioned and prosecuted in the court of law.

“The department will approach the court of law to prosecute the defaulters in the state.

“If your license expires, the law states, you don’t have the authority to continue doing such business.

“When you continue to operate illegally, it is a criminal matter but not a civil matter and the law enforcement agency will assist us to do what is right.

“It is cheaper for you to obey the law than to break it,” the operation controller said.

He advised some of the petroleum marketers to approach DPR if they wanted to build filling stations or site oil and gas facilities in the state.

Kingsley-Sundaye said that the department would continue to give the petroleum marketers guidelines, directives and advised them to always follow them to do the right in their operations.

He disclosed that the department was compiling a list of all illegal filling stations in the state, stressing that DPR would partner State Government to demolish them.

Crime / EFCC Turns Owerri Into Business Gold Mine, Arrests 60 Students by Elibrainz(m): 5:38pm On Oct 26, 2019
– An SOS to the Governor of Imo State. Credible intelligence had revealed that there are cartel at the Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, specialized in turning Owerri, the Eastern Heartland into gold mine; as a group of EFCC officials operating from Enugu with their Owerri Fire Service Police Station collaborators /undercovers randomly and indiscriminately took to arresting of Imo Youths, Students and Visitors alike in disguise of clamping down on Internet Fraudsters otherwise known as Yahoo Yahoo Boys. Sad stories from Imo State University, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Federal University of Technology Owerri and now Federal Polytechnics Nekede, the woes continues. There is no weak that passes without the EFCC gang, bursting one hostel in the night or the other by jumping through the fence or breaking the wall at dead of the night. The sorry situation is that, after massive arrest of these young Nigerians resident in Owerri, the officials said to be EFCC will take them to Owerri fire Service police station were those with money will part with huge sums of money to regain freedom, while some will be moved to Enugu where they are made to pay between N1 million to N3 million naira each to regain freedom. Outside the fact that they pay these huge sum, their valuables especially their cars, and phones are dispossessed of them by their traducers ; the EFCC. At no time will they be charged to court or prosecuted for internet fraud as alleged by the EFCC, rather immediately they part with money in millions and agree to let go their cars, there sins are forgiven. What a country! In the past few weeks, at Ukwu-uratta more than 20 students who were arrested had all regained freedom, at Prof's Avenue, more than 30 arrested had all regained freedom, same is applicable to those arrested at Aladinma, Orji, and others picked randomly along Owerri roads. The ugly story continues, just yesterday, Thursday 24th October, 2019, EFCC officials with white hummer bus stormed federal Poly Nekede and FUTO, arrested upto 60 students, while many have been taken to Enugu Office, majority who had money sorted themselves out at Fire Services Police Station to regain freedom. A source informed thus: "Dis ones are the boys from euros plant , Nekede, close to Klinfitt Lodge where they carried other students too. They came to Nekede as early as 5:30am in the morning to raid Klinfitt lodge and Euros plant While by 4am they were at Naze, by Diamond lodge and the lodge close to it and carried students too" Inasmuch as I don't support internet scam or encourage corruption in all forms, I frown at the methodology of the EFCC operatives, it's quite unethical, embarrassing, unprofessional and condemnable. I therefore, call on the National Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Magu to call his men to order or better still find more credible ways of fighting corruption. If I may ask, what happened to hundreds of millions and cars collected from the alleged Yahoo Yahoo Boys. Imo State Governor, Hon Emeka Ihedioha should immediately pay a visit to the EFCC office and talk to the National Chairman, before the constant harassment, intimidation and massive arrest of road users and students in guess of arresting Yahoo Boys scares investors and tourists from entering Imo and put Imo economy and social life into jeopardy.
