Politics / Give Jonathan Benefit Of Doubt – Abdusalami by elisjini: 9:05am On Mar 11, 2015
Former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, on Tuesday urged Nigerians to give President Goodluck Jonathan the benefit of doubt on his promise that general elections will hold as re-scheduled.
Mr. Abubakar made the call while fielding questions from newsmen in Kano.
The former Head of State was in Kano to inaugurate the Kano Informatics Institute, Kura.
He said Mr. Jonathan had in the recent Presidential Media Chat promised to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the polls on the new dates.
“As our President, let us give him benefit of doubt and accept what he said,’’ Mr. Abubakar said.
He, however, urged INEC to ensure the conduct of free, fair and acceptable elections for the sustenance of the country’s democracy.
“I do hope INEC officials will conduct free, fair and credible elections in the country,” he said.
On his recent visits to President Jonathan and, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (APC presidential candidate), Abubakar said the visits were private.

Politics / Fayose Asks Buhari To Quit Presidential Race by elisjini: 4:29pm On Mar 10, 2015
Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has asked the All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to withdraw from the March 28 presidential election.

Fayose said Buhari and the APC no longer had the moral right to participate in the presidential election, having allegedly lied to Nigerians on several occasions.

According to a press statement issued in Ado-Ekiti by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor argued that the APC had lied severally to Nigerians.

He said, “In saner climes, you can’t lie and be discovered to have lied repeatedly as done by the APC and still want to stand for elections.

“The new deceit from the APC is to use a photoshoped picture of Buhari for posters in Lagos, making him look like a 50 year old man, whereas he is as old as my mother and cannot survive the rigours of office even as a governor not to talk of President of Nigeria.

“First, the APC vice presidential candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a supposed pastor, posted a picture of Reinhard Bonke crusade on his Twitter handle, claiming that the picture was that of APC campaign rally in Kano.

“Second, the APC claimed that Buhari made a surprise visit to Chibok and went further to lie that the people and parents of Chibok girls were filled with hope and joy upon sighting Buhari and his entourage, and escorted him into Chibok with singing and dancing.

“Third, the APC cabal claimed that Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom on a working visit and used fake pictures to back up their lies that Buhari met with ex-British Prime minister, Tony Blair, and had a television interview in London.

“Even when Buhari’s wife admitted that her husband was in the UK to rest, the APC cabal went on with their lies, using pictures taken in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, as proof of Buhari’s activities in London.

“If a party and its candidate could lie as brazenly as done by the APC and Buhari, do they still have moral rights to want to rule Nigeria?

“Can Buhari and his APC cabals that are not truthful about their existence as human beings be trusted to be truthful to Nigerians if they take over power?”
Politics / Goodluck Jonathan Is A Superior Presidential Material To Muhammadu Buhari by elisjini: 1:17pm On Feb 03, 2015
Between 1983 and 1985, Peter Onu of Nigeria was Acting Secretary-General of the OAU. At the 1985 Summit in Addis Ababa, statesmen like Julius Nyerere, President of Tanzania, lobbied for his election as substantive Secretary-General. However, there was a major stumbling block to Peter Onu’s candidature: his Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, was campaigning against him.

Buhari claimed: “This generation of Nigerians and indeed future generations have no other country than Nigeria.” But when the crunch came, his allegiance to Nigeria disappeared. In the election of the OAU Secretary-General in 1985, Buhari voted against Nigeria and for Niger instead. He secured the election of Ide Oumarou, a Fulani man from Niger; as opposed to an Igbo man from Nigeria. So doing, Buhari became the first and only Head of State in the history of modern international relations to vote against his country in favour of his tribe.

Years later, General Buhari marched all the way from Daura to Ibadan to demand of Oyo State Governor, Lam Adeshina: “Why are your people killing my people?” Again, he was not referring to Nigerians as his people. Instead, he was an advocate for the rights of murderous Fulani herdsmen who killed Yoruba farmers that objected to their cattle grazing on their land and damaging their crops.

This same Buhari who voted against Nigeria in 1985, and said in 2003: “Muslims should only vote those who will promote Islam,” is now shopping for votes nationwide. He should be rejected outright.

Ignorance running riot

If APC had wanted to be taken seriously, it would have come up with a better presidential material than Buhari. There is something anomalous about a party whose mantra is change recycling a 73 year old antediluvian as its candidate for the president of modern Nigeria.

Buhari has little or no understanding of public policy. That is why APC will always come up with some excuse or the other not to have him participate in a debate with Jonathan. Buhari made a fool of himself in his last stint at public office. He fought corruption by imposing ridiculous 300-year sentences on offenders. He fought exam malpractices by imposing 24-year prison sentences on school children.

He dealt with indiscipline by flogging people to queue at bus-stops. He dealt with food shortages by sending soldiers to break into private warehouses and shops. He fought trade imbalances by taking Nigeria back to the stone age of trade by barter (counter-trade). He sought to extradite a Nigerian from Britain by drugging and crating him. These are the indices of an uneducated man bereft of judicious policy ideas.

There is so much nonsense about Buhari ending the Boko Haram insurgency as he did the Maitasine insurgency in the 1980’s. But the General needs to be advised that Boko Haram is not Maitasine. Maitasine was in two towns: Boko Haram in three states with spillover effects into others. Maitasine fought with bows and arrows: Boko Haram fight with sophisticated weapons. Maitasine was a local insurgency: Boko Haram is an international phenomenon.

Anti-corruption hypocrisy

Buhari does not know what corruption means and how to fight it. He became Nigeria’s Head of State through the corruption of a coup d’état and he then tried to fight corruption with corruption. Imposing retroactive decrees and killing Nigerians under them is corruption. Putting an Igbo vice-president in Kirikiri, while placing the Fulani president under palatial house arrest, is corruption.

Detaining people like Michael Ajasin in jail, even after they were discharged and acquitted by kangaroo courts, is corruption. Jailing journalists for telling the truth is corruption. Putting pressure on a judge in order to jail Fela Anikulapo Kuti is corruption. Shepherding 53 suitcases of contraband unchecked through customs during a currency change exercise is corruption. Presiding over the theft of 25 billion naira of PTF money is corruption. Swearing an affidavit that your school-leaving certificate is with the military when it is not is corruption.

Transforming Nigeria

Buhari’s shameful past is dwarfed by the achievements of Goodluck Jonathan. Under Jonathan, Nigeria has emerged as by far the largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $503 billion; nearly double the previous estimates. South Africa now comes a distant second with $350 billion. With the unbundling of PHCN after 52 years of gridlock, and with now the realizable target of 20,000 megawatts of electricity by 2020, Nigeria’s GDP will soon double that of South Africa.

CNN Money projects that the fastest growing economy in the world in 2015 will be China (7.3% growth rate); followed by Qatar (7.1%); and then followed by Nigeria (7%). This belies all the misinformation about the Nigerian economy dished out by the APC and attests to the astute management of the economy by the Jonathan administration.

The seemingly ambitious Vision 20 2020, proclaimed under the Abacha regime to make Nigeria one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020 is now well in sight. Today, Nigeria is already the 23rd largest economy in the world. Kudos to Jonathan, we have overtaken such European countries as Austria and Belgium.

Life expectancy

In 2010, when Jonathan became acting president, life expectancy in Nigeria was 47 years. Today, it is 54 years; an improvement of seven years. Adroit application of SURE-P funds has reduced the maternal mortality ratio in Nigeria by 26%. Under Jonathan, Nigeria has become Guinea Worm free; a disease previously affecting 800,000 Nigerians yearly. In the last six months, there has been no new case of polio in Nigeria. If this goes on for another two and a half years, Nigeria will be declared polio-free.

Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, hailed Nigeria’s fight against polio as one of the great world achievements of 2014. He said: “the infrastructure Nigeria has built to fight polio actually made it easier for them to swiftly contain Ebola. The fact that Nigeria is now Ebola free is a great example of how doing the work to fight things like fighting polio also leaves countries better prepared to deal with outbreaks of other diseases.”

Investors’ haven

In the last three years, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has ranked Nigeria as the number one country for foreign investments in Africa. We also receive more home-remittances than any other African country; a vote of confidence in our economy by Nigerians living abroad. They remitted $23 billion in 2013, a figure far more than the $18 billion received by Egypt; the country with the second highest home remittance in Africa.

It is a testament to Goodluck Jonathan’s adroit management of the Nigerian economy that the richest African is now a Nigerian. In 2010, when Jonathan came to power, Aliko Dangote was the 463rd richest man in the world, with a total fortune of $2.1 billion. Today, he is the 23rd richest man in the world, with a total fortune of $25 billion. Dangote’s billions are “made in Nigeria.” Indeed, under Jonathan, Nigeria now has the fourth highest rate of returns on investments in the world, according to UNCTAD.

Crisis of unemployment

The big challenge has to do with jobs. Every year, another 1.8 million people are offloaded into the job market. However, while the APC says Buhari will create 720,000 jobs a year if elected, Jonathan created 1.6 million jobs in 2013. He has established such innovative programs as Nagropreneurs and YOUWIN that support young farmers and entrepreneurs with grants, training and mentorship. He has also instituted internship schemes to enhance the capacity of university graduates to secure gainful employment.

The unemployment problem is compounded by the more than doubling of the education budget under Jonathan. Every Nigerian child now has the opportunity to go to school. Indeed, there has been a 10 million increase in school enrolment in Nigeria under this government. There has also been a 75% increase in O Level credit pass in Maths and English.

Jonathan established 125 almajiri schools in 13 northern states. He also established 14 new federal universities. There is now a federal university in every state. Indeed, the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls derives from the disenchantment of the Boko Haram that many Northern girls are now going to school.

Dealing with corruption

According to Transparency International, Nigeria has not become more corrupt under Goodluck Jonathan. Out of 178 countries ranked in 2010, Nigeria was the 134th most corrupt country. In 2014, Nigeria was ranked 136th.

Unlike Buhari, Jonathan understands that corruption has to be attacked institutionally, from the roots. Therefore, he proposed the abrogation of the petroleum subsidy; one of the biggest avenues for corruption in government. However, Nigerians refused. Jonathan has sanitized the corruption in fertilizer distribution. The Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, lamented that between 1980 and 2010, Nigeria lost 776 billion naira to corrupt fertilizer racketeering.

That effectively came to an end under Jonathan. Through the innovative e-wallet system, farmers are given cell-phones through which they now have direct and easy access to government-provided fertilizer, chemicals and seedlings. Jonathan has also sanitised the banking system by removing dinosaur managing directors, recovering indigent loans and using AMCOM to mop up bad loans.

By instituting e-payment systems, he sanitized the civil service by removing 50,000 ghost-workers in one fell swoop. He has equally got rid of ghost voters from the electoral register; over 1 million ghost voters were removed from the Zamfara INEC register alone. Under Jonathan, we have had free and fair elections one after the other; in Edo, Anambra, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun.

Transforming agriculture

Agriculture has been transformed under this administration. Thanks to Jonathan, agriculture now accounts for 22% of Nigeria’s GDP, more than oil and gas which only account for 15.9%.

Under Jonathan, Nigeria has recorded a more than 50% reduction in food imports. Prior to his presidency, we had a food import bill of 1.4 trillion naira. But now, it is less than 700 billion. With the innovation of dry season rice-farming, Nigeria has reached 60% self-sufficiency in rice production. According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), Nigeria is now the largest producer of cassava in the world. The Jonathan government built six strategically-located perishable cargo airports in Ilorin, Jalingo, Jos, Lagos, Makurdi andYola; in close proximity to Nigeria’s food baskets.

It is remarkable that Northern farmers were able to donate five million tubers of yam in order to raise 5 billion naira for Buhari’s presidential election campaign. If Jonathan transformation agenda in agriculture was not working as planned, they would not have been able to do this.

Nigerians now eat rice grown in Nigeria. It is a matter of honour that more and more of the rice eaten in Nigeria now originates from Nigeria. Major restaurants and hotel chains report to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture that they cannot meet the demand for locally grown rice, a report that corroborates our expectations that Nigeria will become self-sufficient in rice production in no distant time, should we maintain the on-going momentum of our Agricultural Transformation Agenda. I am proud of what the Nigerian farmer has achieved and the sky is the limit if we stay the course. My dear friends, by God's grace, we will stay the course. GEJ.

Politics / Tinubu To Buhari: “shine My Shoe” by elisjini: 2:58pm On Jan 26, 2015
Tinbu to Buhari - Shine My Shoes

The bearer of the Golden Fleece, senator, former Lagos governor and APC kingpin Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has never been shy about his ability to exert influence behind the scenes in Nigerian politics. With coming presidential elections on February 14th, the ambitious former accountant for Mobil is primed to pull his biggest feat yet: installing a loyal man at Aso Rock in the person of General Muhammed Buhari.

Asiwaju’s largesse, though, comes with a catch. Just ask crime-buster Nuhu Ribadu, whom Tinubu supported in his 2011 bid for the presidency, only to abandon him in an effort to sway the election – then – in Goodluck Jonathan. The wise, old general could not have walked into this arrangement wearing blinders.

According to Lagos insiders, tensions between Nigeria’s self-styled Cassius and Caesar have been brewing for some time now and nearly reached the boiling point. The two were arguing over finances at a recent meeting in Lagos when a visibly-inebriated Tinubu reportedly extended his right left to Buhari and said: “shine my shoe.” The enraged general stormed out of the suite as Asiwaju laughed, and muttered “I was only singing a song.”

The strains in the Tinubu-Buhari arrangement might have been expected for some time, as the two could hardly be less similar. Tinubu is extravagant and given to bragaddacio, while Buhari is austere and unforgiving. Buhari is reputed to be incorruptible, while the same has never been said of Asiwaju. Perhaps both men believed they’d benefit from their arrangement under the APC aegis.

A mounting pile of unpaid bills led to latest flare-up, APC sources suggest. Tinubu has provided Buhari with a fully-fitted campaign operation, a state-of-the-art touring bus said to be the most opulent in Africa, and American President Barack Obama’s own campaign strategist, David Axelrod. With so much flash, many of the more mundane costs have been falling between the cracks, creditors allege. Journalists commissioned to wrote pro-Buhari pieces haven’t been paid since November, which is what the two men were discussing before Tinubu unleashed his shoe-shining crack.

As the presidential race intensifies, one of Buhari’s biggest investors may have more to worry about than the shine on his shoes!

Politics / Attacks On Jonathan: ‘this Nonsense Must Stop’, Says Presidency by elisjini: 2:23pm On Jan 24, 2015
Following the successive attacks on the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Katsina and Bauchi states by irate youth, the presidency has cautioned the opposition All Progressive Congress, saying “this nonsense must stop.”
The Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Rufai Alkali, said, Friday, in a statement captioned “This nonsense must stop”, that the action of APC supporters was a negation of the non-violence peace pact signed recently in Abuja by all presidential candidates.
Mr. Alkali did not however provide evidence that APC supporters were behind the attacks.
The statement read: “When the peace pact by the Major Political Parties participating in the 2015 General Elections was signed, Nigerians heaved a great sigh of relief in the belief that the tensions stocked up in the build-up to the campaigns will subside.
“President Goodluck Jonathan who is also the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) blazed the trail in appending his signature to the historic document. General Muhammadu Buhari and leaders of other parties also signed, pledging a violence free electioneering process and rejection of uncouth and inciting language.
“Unfortunately, while President Jonathan and the PDP have remained bound by the letters and spirit of the peace pact, supporters of the APC candidate have had a field day, violating all the terms of the pact and engaging in violence even on the person and entourage of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The successive incidents in Katsina and Bauchi States where irate youth supporters of the APC unleashed a reign of terror on the convoy of the President is an ominous wind that blows no one any good.”
“A situation where any citizen of Nigeria, least of all the President and Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be made unsafe in any part of Nigeria is unacceptable and stands condemned.
“Were it not for the maturity and professionalism of the security personal on the convoy of the President, an ugly scenario provoked by these hooligans would have held sway. We commend the security agents for nipping the situation in the bud,” he said.
Warning against reprisal attacks, the presidential adviser admonished APC leaders to caution their supporters.
He said, “Once more, we call on leaders of the APC on whose behalf these dastardly acts were executed to call their attack dogs to order, in order to avert similar reprisal measures by overzealous supporters of other Parties.
“President Goodluck Jonathan remains firmly committed to the peace pact and has successfully reigned in his supporters to avoid violence or inciting statements. For him, His campaign remains a quest for the total transformation of Nigeria and not an egocentric or desperate struggle to assert himself.”
He further accused the APC of whipping up sentiments and of engaging in divisive campaign.
“We shall not allow desperate people to distract us from our drive to connect with Nigerian people and lift them to greater heights. This nonsense must stop,” he said.

Achievements‬ in Economy: Privatisation of Power Sector
For the first time in Nigeria’s history, we have successfully privatised the electric power industry. This is indeed worth celebrating as a major economic achievement in 2013. Given the challenges of the power sector in the last three decades, the importance of power to our economic development, and the inability of past governments to adequately fund investments in the sector or to manage it, it makes sense to privatise the sector and allow the sector to be run in a business-like manner with strong oversight by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. Our administration did not make the decision to privatise – it was long decided that the government could not manage the power sector and had indeed failed to do so over three decades. We had the singular achievement of actually implementing the plans started three administrations ago

In Economy: Job Creation
Our government’s economic achievements are creating demonstrable impacts for the average man on the street. In agriculture, over 250,000 farmers and youths were employed in rice faming across ten Northern States. In manufacturing, new jobs have also been created across the country. In the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone alone we created an estimated 30,000 jobs. The Government’s special intervention programs are also creating jobs opportunities. The YouWiN program has supported young Nigerian entrepreneurs and created over 18,000 jobs. The SURE-P Community Services Scheme has also created 120,000 job opportunities across the country, and the Federal Government’s investments in the primary health care services also generated an estimated 178,000 jobs.
