I need the help of well versed nairalanders in the aspect of economics as I am not a fan of economics.
With the current state of naira ( fallen to its nadir in the international market) at the moment, what will happen if the Nigerian govt now decide to devalue the naira?
are we looking at a scenario where 1 dollar = 1000 naira( or more).
What will devaluing the naira actually mean to the economy?
" Devaluation" means official lowering of the value of a country's currency within a fixed exchange rate system, by which the monetary authority formally sets a new fixed rate with respect to a foreign reference currency.

What you are not understanding is Okonjo Iweala and the economic team may not have been perfect but they were taking serious measures to prevent our economy from slipping into possible recession as we have now. Is it a coincidence that our economy has worsened under Buhari? Why wasn't the economy this bad under GEJ? THEY WERE TAKING MEASURES!THEY HAD STRONG ECONOMIC TEAM. TO THE CONTRARY, IT TOOK BUHARI 6 MONTHS TO ASSEMBLE A CABINET AND TO THIS DAY HAS NO ECONOMIC TEAM. SO STOP BLAMNG GEJ AND IWEALA.
The economy was nt bad under Jonathan because our foreign reserve was big enough to defend the naira. when this same issue happened in 2008 our foreign reserve was $62 billion dollars, and they removed $20 bilion dollars to defend the naira. also when this oil fall started 31st december 2014 to may 2015 they removed $5 billion to defend the naira. nw the foreign reserve is $28 billion how do we get $20 billion to defend the naira till oil price rise again, considering that the reserve is $2 billion below safety ratio.

so we should bring her back to come and finish our remaining foreign reserve. somebody that cannot manage the economy when oil was sold at $60 per barrel but rather decided to push us into debt by borrowing everywhere, to the extent that they cant pay workers, and she still removed $5 billion frm our foreign reserve.
nw you want her to manage naira when oil is sold at $30 per barrel, that means you want her to sell nigeria.

Good morning everyone,

Please could someone kindly take their time to explain what exactly is going on, because quite frankly, I don't understand?
Why is the Naira depreciating on a DAILY basis? I'm not trying to bring politics into this, but, it wasn't this bad when Goodluck Jonathan was the President. Now, all of a sudden, we're experiencing this. Are there certain factors causing this? It has never been this bad, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks in advance for you responses.

we are experiencing scarcity of dollars due to the fall in oil price. then the cbn placed restriction on certain products u can get in nigeria. leaving the black market to determine xchange rate.

This proves you are either dull or pretending
Is it not shortage of dollar supply that is affecting the naira
Is not the overdependance on oil wealth that is affecting the dollar supply.
If you are not dull, you would have known that True federalism will help Nigeria diversify her various exports which will definitely see dollar supply increase.
reduce the insult pls. now if we start using this TRUE FEDERALISM hw do u intend to raise the $20 billion dollars the CBN need to support the naira within 3 months?.
Secondly how do we convince all three ethnic groups to embrace TRUE FEDERALISM within 3 months. considering the level of hatred between igbo, hausa and yoruba?. because i can remember hw the igbos refuse to help the APC during the elections both state and federal, calling them bokoharam party.

You keep ranting like an epileptic(no offence). What is the relationship between Jonathan and the deed of Buhari? Did Jonathan tell Buhari to restrict dollar circulation and muscle the dollar? If you say the Reserve was depleted(which I agree and still maintain), isn't it appropriate to devalue the currency and free the reserve of stress like CBN did two times between November 2014 and February 2015?

This argument is beyond you sir! This isn't a campaign thread, in all honesty. Go back to your cameraman duties please....

As for zombiesm, zombies are known for one pattern, their "mentors" are always kwarrect, but a rational mind would question his leader's decision when he find something inappropriate. That doesn't make him a flip-flop!

I don tire for you jare...
pls this is nt a fight bt public opinion. back to the matter. the problem still remains that our main source of forex is down, devaluation works in export depend country like china to favour the local product,
remember jonathan devalued naira frm 167-197 and that period, oil was averaging $60 per barrel, nw if u minus production cost of $30 per barrel that means the country makes $30 profit per barrel, meaning the country still earn enough forex to fund part of our importation, and he still supported the naira with $5 billion dollars.
.
nw buhari on the other hand sells oil at $28 per barrel and the produation cost is $30. meaning he is making no profit, plus no foreign reserve,
.
nw how many billion dollars do you think we need to pump into the economy considering the fact that we no more earn forex again compared to the first instance.

I understand your argument... they should have just devalued than create this ill advised scarcity that zapped the naira. Dollar restriction with no back up or clear economic bail out policy... crazy ineptitude
devaluation of the naira will only make matters worse, devaluation works in economy like china which depends on exportation as a source of revenue. if u devalue the naira the dollar scarcity will continue since the country will nt be making money frm exportation and the black market will still increase the exchange rate because demand is higher than supply.
Jonathan devalued the naira when the oil price was averaging $60 per barrel btw january to march 2015 and still used $5 billion of our reserve fund to defend the naira, same thing happened in 2008 and the country spent almost $17 billion to defend the naira. So how much will buhari need nw to defend the naira nw oil is $28 per barrel. Or is it the policy that made the naira to fall then,

We have so many educated fools these days. Simple economics tells us the higher the demand for a particular product, the higher the price of that product. $ rate is determined by this principle. As it is now, Nigeria earns $ majorly from the sales of crude of which price has crashed hence limiting the amount of $ available for supply. And since we are import dependent economy, our demand for $ is always high. And going by the simple economics law of demand and supply, the rate of $ will continue to soar till supply improve. So what magic will the Tanoid chief perform to make 1$ to N200? Except he has some $ stashed somewhere waiting for a period like this, but even at that, it will only be temporary and not sustainable.
i wonder where he wants to get $20 billion to defend the naira, just like YARADUA did during the oil crisis in 2008.

You think the Nigerian economy is like a local vendor or business that you can just try your luck and if it fails you can just cut your loss. If the economy fails millions of lives are at stake so excuse Buhari for not jumping at the offer. I can't help but laugh that you actually believe the government can go after his assets if he fails, no court in the world would approve such an order, it not only ridiculesthe judiciary system but the government as a whole!
thank you they are yet to understand that only input of dollars will save the naira. atleast $10 billion for the next two months.

we faced same problem in 2008 and it lasted for 6 months and it cost the country $20 billion dollars of our reserve to defend the naira then, nw calculate hw much it will take to defend the naira now the oil crisis has lasted for 17 months.
