Business / Re: Which Of These Alternative Power Sources is more economical? by elume2020(m): 7:41pm On Jun 03, 2016
First Mr. Op, inverter is not an energy source. Let me assume you meant solar PV + an inverter (no battery storage) not advisable. Solar PV + a bidirectional converter (convert account to DC charge battery, then the DC to ac to meet load). My suggestion will be a grid tied solar PV + bidirectional converter + battery + diesel generator. But before you jump the gun, what is the combine load of your system, that is the sum of their watts. Do any have a surge requirement. I know of the photocopy and fridge do have some surge( that is they pull more power when starting up. How long will each be operating. Once you know all of that. You should ask yourself, do you want everything to be on solar PV system, if yes, how much solar hours do you have in your area, is it in a built up area with tall building structure around you? Is the road around your area tarred, dust cover on solar PV panel will reduce efficiency except you are ready to do daily cleaning. Once you consider all those questions, then the true cost of what you want will start becoming a reality. I believe business is for profit. I will suggest first you get low energy demand computers, energy star rated refrigerator. You can power them on your solar system but for it to cover all business hours you will need back up, phcn and generator.
Renewable is cool, but many factors to consider before you take the leap. Depending on your location and the answers you have to some if my basic assessment questions, you will decide what to go for. Diesel generator have cheap capital investment cost but high operating cost, renewable is the reverse.
Cheers

bayooooooo:

1. It is NOT about your qualifications; it is about his INTERESTS. Since he will pay for part of your education(maintaining you as RA) from his research grants, he is looking for something in return. As a PhD student, you are MORE likely to get him papers than a masters student. Besides, if you do well, you will also write a thesis which counts for something. So primarily, it is more about his interests than your qualifications. My take is if you decline the offer for PhD, he would likely drop your file. Nothing to gain, since after two years of masters, you will be gone.

2. A degree in Industrial Chemistry is sufficient to embark on PhD in Chemical Engineering especially if you have taken courses that major on different Unit Operations. So your PDG is a further confirmation that your background is sufficient. The nature of PhD is such that you don't know what your research would lead to and the knowledge require to complete it might even be far from what you have learnt. You might design something that requires a physicist to examine, a microbiologist to experiment with or a computational chemist to validate. A high quality PhD work often involves elements of collaboration and that's why many published works include as many as seven authors. So, don't be afraid of what lies in the program.

3.Generally in your first year, you will take classes that are relevant to your areas of interest. Often, you take these classes in consultation with your advisor. So, you will be fine.

4.You need to do your homework before leaving Nigeria for Canada. Examine his group. How many people are currently in his group? When folks graduate, where do most of the people in his group usually go? Where do people in his group usually get published? What is the average number of years it takes to get PhD in his group? If he is an emeritus professor as you have mentioned in one of your posts, you want to know if a Post Doc is running his group, if he still comes to school regularly? Those are the questions you need to examine carefully.

5.International students are often carried away by big names. You can't blame them. But the best folks to work with are the ASSISTANT PROFESSORS. They are working assiduously to get tenured and as such are more inclined to publish any of your works. Therefore, you tend to have more publications with Assistant Professors fighting to get tenure. In addition, you see them in lab, offices everyday including weekends. So, you tend to learn more on how to troubleshoot equipment, design, or even synthesize clusters in some cases. But they can be micromanaging too much. However, if you work with a well known professor, there is no motivation to publish your works except it will get into a top quality journal and some of them are sitting on many papers written by students who graduated almost a DECADE ago! So you want to weigh that carefully.

6. PhD in the west especially in engineering and sciences is not a joke. It is rigorous and there will be moments that you would be down, moment that would absolutely love it. Make friends, attend conferences and enjoy!

My question for you is why Canada? Is the school well ranked in Chemical Engineering?

With all due respect sir, you have said it all. Guess with years of experience. Op even my post can't be better staff than what bayooooo has given you. Please note every piece of his advice and think through them. Thanks sir for outlining the details. I am a Phd student and you nailed it.

Team16:
Please oga se.un help me push to the front thread cos I need to reply this mail today.

I have a B.Sc Industrial Chemistry ( 4.01/5), Pgd Chemical Engineering ( Distinction ).

I applied for a Canadian admission for MSc.E Chemical Engineering. Normally for your admission to be successful you need to secure a supervisor whose research interest is similar to yours. I have done that and he encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application and after going through my application with other supporting documents like letter of motivation and others, he sent me a mail this afternoon that they want to consider me PhD instead of MSc I applied for. I'm very confused right now if to accept it or not considering high standard of education abroad as I use to hear, I haven't experienced foreign education before, this is my first. Please note my ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Please help me push to the front thread cos I need advice from experienced Nigerians who have studied abroad. Thanks. I appreciate

Hi, go for it. It could be a PhD programme but the first year, you do some master course then the next three years you proceed to your Phd working around the same research topic. In some schools the first six months your are developing your proposal then you present only after a successful presentation then they give you the go ahead to proceed on phd. Contact the supervisor again to clarify things properly.

About schooling abroad, I don't think you should bother much, except if your project has some modeling using a programming language that is when you should look at your strength. I had a B. Eng mechanical engineering proceeded to do a master in Chemical Engineering, graduated with Cum Laude in a foreign University. So far you are good at your basics, with good computer skills you are good to go. Note the first three months of resumption are tricky as their approach to education might be different, how to print, use the library, find your bearing around, access school database, Department and Faculty colloquium etc but once you hit momentum up the sky is your starting point.

One last thing, be sure of funding.

Best wishes bro.

Career / Re: Mathematics/stastistics Vs Mechanical Engineering by elume2020(m): 5:58pm On Jan 04, 2016
Op first it is I'm and not am.... If you are studying mathematics and can major in Statistics please go ahead. No field is exclusively independent.
I hold a B. Eng in Mechanical Engineering, but from my experience most models engineer develop are equation driven but future model will be data driven. I had a master in Chemical Engineering and from my field work and research I can tell you before a company will invest in new equipment for process optimizations, they push the existing process to the limit which is most often done by data logging and data visualisation. How do you predict future demand for a product, how do you forecast system behaviour based on historical data, how to you take care of uncertainty in process economic... If not through data analysis mostly expertise of data scientists who are statisticians. Based on informed decision from the data scientists correlated with Engineering laws, engineers can juxtapose process conditions to maximise system yield within the equipment operating limit.
I am presently taking courses on data analysis for my phd with research focus on energy. I can tell you I am not finding it funny or easy. Trying to understand distribution, probabilistic analysis, markov chain, time series data analysis just to mention a few. Though I understand the Engineering aspect of my work but that statistical aspects of it has been the challenge. If you were in my shoes the reverse would have been the case but you can catch up quickly on Engineering aspect much faster than the statistical aspect of it.
So I encourage you to stick to what you are already studying beside if you want to be self employed in core mechanical engineering then you will need some good capital and you imagination skills has to be very high. But the beautiful side of Engineering is you can easily cross between various Engineering fields with great success and still try your hands on the sciences.
I have only created a scenario of statistics to Engineering but what about business data analysis, big data analysis, health data, even your shopping habit for example at a mall can be predicted from your visit and you bank details per swipe you do. So overtime you discover that that particular product you buy is always on the shelf. People might not appreciate mathematicians especially statistician in Nigeria because Nigeria lack good data collection system.
Best wishes in your future endeavour.

Keneking:

Thank you for the analysis. Some quick questions please:

- what do you mean by internet payment?
- how does one stock up Rands?
- what is the limit on cash at entry point at JHB?
- Rands is about N25/R1 in approved BDC. How can someone get cheaper in Lagos.
- what is your perspective allowing your bank remit tuition?
By Internet banking I mean online transfer using your Nigerian bank account with a token or dongle to make online Nara to Nara transfer between Nigerian banks.
I was making reference to stocking up Nara in your Nigerian bank account so when the opportunity comes where someone is willing to give you rands and want Nara you can proceed with the transaction.
Nobody ask you what cash you have on you. But international border entry regulation stipulate you declare a particular amount of money I think anything above 10,000 USD. Please double check on that figure and try to travel light on cash. If you have excess cash on you, you are a prey to the Nigerian Immigration officer.
I am not in Lagos, I don't advice changing Nara to rands yet. Keep your Nara in your account maybe just have about R5000 on you while on arrival to get going.
If your bank can do international transfer on your behalf then I think that will be much safer but ensure you have all necessary code from the institution to effect such transfer. Also of importance is your reference number to which the payment can be tracked by the institution. At time the payment might have been made but due to not including your reference number or details as specified in the invoice it might take some extra process to track such transaction.

Just an update to the house on possibility of using your Nigeria master card for withdrawals.

I visited a SA standard bank ATM, aside the fixed charge of R50 per withdrawal which increased from R0-R25 and now R50, you cannot make any withdrawal from an ATM as at 28th Dec. 2015. With 41,000 naira in my Gtbank I tried R2000, R1800, and R1500, all returned transaction not permitted. If i had used a higher withdrawal limit and transaction can go through it will rather return insufficient balance rather than transaction not permitted. Checking my Gtbank notification it stated I can withdraw upto 1000 USD. I used my Gtbank card to pay for groceries in the USA without hassle, used it about two weeks ago to pay about 40 pounds over the Internet and it went through though was charged some crazy amount.

The option of converting your naira to dollars, and thereafter to Rands might cause you loss of about 20% or more of the naira value. One way to those that will be paying fees come January in South African Institutions is to make sure you can do Internet transfer on your Nigerian bank account. Stock up as much as you can in it. From my enquiry on possible exchange rates, whoever will give you rands will most likely sell 1 Rand for 16.5 to 17 naira as at 24th December when I last asked around. I don't do any transaction even if I can, I am not interested. But a very serious warning be careful who you transaction business with. Also as a matter of fact the current University payment structure don't accept cash anymore, my knowledge of the University of Johannesburg.

Payment for medical aid for those applying for visa is another issue. So I forsee a situation of someone in SA making the rands payment and you recipient doing the naira payment. On this medical aid issue too, I suggest you contact them directly and DIY all necessary registration and your SA friend just make the payment. Once payment is confirmed the medical will send you your medical certificate themselves via email. A friend was once duped, which I had intervene by paying for him and filled the form but requested that they send the certificate to him directly and cc me. This is through Compcare.

On a final note on issues of finance. It's well known that Postgraduate students canaletto funding for their studies, I am a beneficiary, but many attimes, it takes some months to get stabilised and eventual get either a bursary or scholarship. However, due to the recent #feesmustfall, University is not increasing school fees and will be cutting down on some budget (e.g. entertainment budget, merit bursary, supervisor link bursary etc). In some University, tutorship which can fetch you from R2000 to R7000 per month for senior tutor are now solely for citizens. My reason for stating this to make you do a proper check and balance of your finance.

I am not a pro on visa issues, hence, I cannot comment on application processes, but all visas I have been issued it's a DIY. More updates for departing your base and integrating to the society. Also some few tip for those who will be doing masters by research.

Season's greetings.

Just to clear some air around ESCA, the new procedure is you take all documents you intend applying with to an organ in Centurion, for verification and validation. There a slip will be given to you which you will come along with to their office at Bruma Lake, Johannesburg. When I did mine this procedure wasn't in place then but now due to forgery of certificate the process has been intensified.
On the other hand, don't always expect to get a candidate engineer even if you hold a B. Eng. You might be called for interview, I was called, terrible because they were asking me to write some equations which I can't even remember the sequence of the formula but explained what it was used for. At the end I was offered a candidate Technician. I decline it and asked them to review their decision which the process is currently ongoing. I hope is comes out as what I wanted, not looking for a job though just wanted the right recognition.

I wasn't interviewed by ECSA, they just sent me an email after evaluating my b.eng recommending that I register for so and so categories. Registration itself took them 2months and after registering, to get the confirmation and membership certificate, I have to wait for another 4wks to 6wks.

As per critical skills, ECSA doesn't issue a letter confirming critical skills, according to the new directive, once you are registered by a professional body, it confirms your critical skills, so there is no need presenting such letter. google immigration directive no 22 of 2014, the pdf is to big to be attached here.

Sultan003 I understand your position but a housemate of mine who had four years work experience in oil and gas and obtained a Master from a south African University was denied. He was asked to present a letter from a recognised body despite his candidates engineer status from ECSA. As for me I have not heard from them since last year.
Travel / Re: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by elume2020(m): 2:57pm On Mar 09, 2015
With regards to critical skills, if you obtained your first degree from a Nigerian University not on the Washington accord, be prepared for and interview. I was interviewed but to be honest I can't give an accurate answer of all they were asking because I have forgotten many of them, like writing formula of a topic I did in third year. Also asking how many lecturer in the department, equipment we have and all sort. Defended my B. ENG project before the three white guys. And that was in December. Up till now I haven't gotten any feedback from them. Moving forward, with regards to critical skills, you still need a letter from a recognised body here in South Africa that your have worked for five years, which ECSA won't write for you. So before you submit ensure you have all documents as required. A friend did submit with all documents except the letter stating he had over five years experience which is deemed critical despite presenting ECSA candidate engineer certificate and a mail stating that he can apply for professional if he so which. His application was denied but with a condition to appeal if he can provide the said letter. The question is who will write that letter?
