Education › waec makes u-turn,releases candidates results by emamos(op): 7:16pm On Aug 12, 2015
WAEC Makes U-turn, Releases Candidates’ Results
Authorities of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, announced the release the examination results of over 100,000 candidates earlier withheld on account of unpaid fees by state governments.
The head of WAEC, Nigeria, Charles Eguridu, at a conference in Abuja, said the decision followed favourable response from some of the states owing the organisation that have paid some part of their debts.
WAEC also hinged its decision on the prevailing economic challenges in the country, noting that it would not want to jeopardise the educational progress of the candidates of the affected states.
Eguridu said, “Management of the council has decided that the results of the candidates of indebted states would be released in deference to all the appeals and the commitment of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.
“The results are, therefore, to be uploaded on our website in the next 24hours; this decision is based on our wish not to impede the educational progress of any Nigerian child.”
Eguridu, however, expressed the belief that now that WAEC has made concessions, the affected states would reciprocate by fully meeting their financial obligations.
The examination body released the May/June 2015 Senior School Certificate Examination results on Monday, withholding 118,101 candidates’ results out of the 1.5 million students that sat for the examination.
About 19 states were alleged to owe WAEC registration fees amounting to over N3 billion, but as at Monday when the first batch was released the figure had reduced to 13 states

Culture › Late Ooni Of Ife To Be Buried On Friday by emamos(op): 6:45pm On Aug 12, 2015
Adetokunbo Sijuwade, the son of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, on Wednesday officially announced the death of the monarch, saying he would be buried on Friday.

Addressing journalists at the Government Office in Osogbo, the younger Sijuwade said the body of the late monarch would be flown in from London on Thursday and buried on Friday at 10 a.m.

Also speaking, Governor Rauf Aregbesola said the “late Ooni represented the Yoruba nation and has done a lot in uplifting the traditional institution in the state”.

Mr. Aregbesola, who read the last text message he received from the Ooni at the briefing, said the late monarch informed him of his frail health, adding that he was travelling to London for treatment.
He described the death of the Ooni as a great loss to the state and the Yoruba race, stressing, however, that a king could not die in Yorubaland.
Oba Solomon Omisakin, the Obalufe of Iromo and Vice Chairman of the Ife Traditional Council as well as High Chief Joseph Ijaodola, the Lowa of Ile-Ife, both corroborated what Mr. Sijuwade said.

They expressed gratitude to the people of Osun and prayed that God would provide another king who would excel as the late Ooni did.

The press briefing was also attended by the Ooni’s daughter, Aderounmu Fadeyi, and members of Ife Traditional Council.

Three dead bodies have as at now been recovered from the carcass of the helicopter that crashed minutes ago a lagoon at the Oworosoki area of Lagos.
THISDAY gathered that three persons who sustained varying degrees of injuries were also rescued and rushed to different hospitals for immediate treatment.
However it's yet unclear if the deceased and injured persons were onboard on the helicopter or pedestrians on ground.
The helicopter which crashed behind the King's palace was said to have caused pandemonium as the residents scampered to safety.
Although its still not clear if its a military, commercial or private helicopter that crashed, the South-west Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the casualty rate.
He said even as some of the primary and secondary responders responders are moving, three corpses have been recovered.
He also said two injured persons have been taken to Afolabi Hospital in the area while another injured person was taken to the general hospital.
Speaking to THISDAY he said, "As at now, we don't know the identity of the chopper yet. Search and rescue operations continues

Politics › Buhari Now Different From The Man I Knew.....soyinka by emamos(op): 12:56pm On Aug 12, 2015
Buhari Now Different From The Man I Knew – Soyinka.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described President Muhammadu as a different man from the man he knew while he was in military uniform on the Nigerian political landscape, who is ready to make amends for his past mistakes.

Soyinka, who spoke in an interview with Zero Tolerance, a periodic publication by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), noted that Buhari has already paid some debts to the Nigerian community, describing him as a lucky man.

Soyinka noted that although Buhari has not come out openly to apologise for his wrong deeds in the past, he has nonetheless accepted the fact that he had made some mistakes.

He said: “He (Buhari) has not pleaded for forgiveness for his past, if he had done that, I might have been less ambiguous about him. But I think from my findings about him, he is a born again phenomenon. If I am wrong, well, too bad. Though I don’t believe in ‘born-againism’ but I think this may be an exception.”

The laureate also descended heavily on former President Goodluck Jonathan for trying to differentiate between stealing and corruption, saying Nigerians should have challenged him on that.

Soyinka noted that it was wrong for a president to have taken such a position on a serious issue like corruption, thereby playing down its negative impact on the nation and its people.

He said: “The media should have challenged President Jonathan to define what stealing is, when he said that stealing is not corruption. How can a public figure, an intelligent person like that, come out to tell the public that corruption is not stealing? Then you should have asked him, what then is corruption? The media should have challenged him.”

The pioneer Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, chairman, who is believed to have co-founded the Pyrates Confraternity in Nigeria, said it was wrong to lump cultism with confraternity, arguing that the two were not the same.

He said belonging to confraternities is a normal culture in colleges and not an evil cult, as wrongly portrayed by ignorant persons in Nigeria.
Soyinka said: “Everybody knows that fraternities are a normal culture in all colleges. It exists in all colleges. President Clinton was a member of a fraternity. In fact, anybody who goes to college in the United States is a member of a college fraternity. There is absolutely nothing evil or occultic about fraternity.

“But here, the media is largely responsible for fuelling the ignorance of society of the words ‘cultism’ and ‘fraternity’. This is a disservice and I have said it again and again. There are evil cults, whose members must prove themselves by going to rape. There are others whose entry is to slash or eat somebody or rob; it has nothing to do with college fraternity.

“The media owes the responsibility to constantly tell the public the truth. But they go on and children grow up, believing that college fraternity is Satanic, demonic and this is wrong.”
