Politics › Adetunji Ogunwusi: The Most Likely Successor As Ooni Of Ife, By Soji Bamidele by emamos(op): 12:05am On Aug 30, 2015
Prince Ogunwusi, seems to be the most likely candidate to mount the throne after the late Ooni Sijuwade.
Since the mortal plague, death, afflicted the imperial kingdom of Ile-Ife, Osun State, to claim the pride and power of the people, His Imperial Majesty Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, the 50th Ooni of Ife, the ancient city has been cast in a bind of sort. Besides having to duel with an increasingly meddlesome and fast domineering new media, the Royal Traditional Council (RTC) has had to contend with the intrigues, subtle and wild machinations of contenders to the crown.
No sooner did Ile-Ife commit the remains of Oba Sijuwade to mother earth than princes from the eligible ruling families began to indicate interest in the royal stool, with each candidate making a strong case for himself.
As the race to succeed the late Ooni intensifies, all the eligible princes in the ancient town have disclosed their intentions to succeed the late Ooni of Ife. However, from all indications, of all the contenders, Prince Adetunji Adeyemi Ogunwusi, 48, seems to be the most likely candidate to mount the throne after the late Ooni Sijuwade.
While many pundits attribute the likelihood of his emergence as the next Ooni to his established renown, business savvy and depth of character, many more argue that the Ogunwusi scion is favoured by historical and royal provisions.
Notwithstanding the claims, counter-claims and permutations concerning his candidacy for the crown, Prince Ogunwusi exudes unusual candour and character absent in several contenders to the throne. For instance, while his rivals lust and fixate on the likely benefits to be enjoyed from mounting the coveted throne, Prince Ogunwusi sees royalty as ‘Service to Humanity.’ The Prince believes that royalty is both spiritual and physical empowerment of monarchs authorised to ensure provision of adequate welfare for their people and protection of their Socio-cultural heritage and not a position of exploitation or self-enrichment whatsoever.
The respect and dignity that comes with royalty, according to him, should be earned. “Kingship is power and ability to serve the community at large. A monarch’s ability to rule is not based only on one’s divine right of succession, but also on one’s ability to shoulder the responsibility that comes with being divinely appointed. A monarch should possess the ability to lead his subjects wisely, placing the welfare of his kingdom above his personal desire. It is also paramount that one appreciates the collective guide of the kingmakers and other stakeholders in upholding the cultural beliefs of his kingdom,” he said.
The Prince’s socio-economic and cultural development blueprint for Ile-Ife
While his rivals engage in wanton popularity contest and bicker over their right to the throne, Prince Ogunwusi charts a purposeful developmental agenda for Ile-Ife. “My main thrust of returning Ile-Ife to its pre-eminence is based on my desire to redevelop the historic city into becoming the regional centre for commerce and promote its cultural heritage. Ile-Ife in the past accommodated and welcome visitors and traders alike with warmth and open arms for the economic benefit of the indigenes. So, this would be the driving ideology for all my infrastructural, economic policy and developmental strategies,” he said.
According to the Prince, his decision to vie for the throne of his forebears is premised on his ambition to further re-unite the Yoruba and promote the race’s cultural heritage. “My desire is to re-ignite the interest of our youths in the development of Yoruba land and redefine the richness in our cultural beliefs. Taking a cue from what I have done all my life which is wealth creation, my six-point agenda derived from the letters of the word “WEALTH” include: W = Wealth creation; E = Education; A = Agricultural Development; L = Leveraging ; T = Tourism and Trade and H = Human Capital Development,” he said.
Prince Ogunwusi seeks to work with organisations like Ife Indigenes in Diaspora organisation (IIDORG) to strengthen business, travel and investment opportunities in the kingdom. “This will be achieved by harnessing and developing local content and talents for business growth and development of the land. Our people are known for art and craft, pottery, and artifact development. We intend to promote indigenous industries by sourcing and developing markets for the products. Our overall wealth creation ideals shall be achieved by vigorously pursuing other agendas,” he disclosed.

Crime › Nigeria Says It’s Uncovered Boko Haram Spy Ring At Abuja Airport by emamos(op): 10:55am On Aug 29, 2015
Nigeria has uncovered a spy cell run by militant Islamist group Boko Haram at the international airport in the capital Abuja apparently aimed at selecting targets for attack, the country's national security agency said.
In a statement late on Friday, the Department of State Services (DSS) said it discovered the ring on Monday and was working with aviation authorities to pre-empt any attack.
President Muhammadu Buhari has made halting Boko Haram's six-year-old insurgency a priority, but a Reuters tally shows the jihadist group has killed more than 700 people in Nigeria in bomb attacks and shootings since he came to office on May 29.
The DSS said it had arrested a 14-year-old boy who said he had been instructed to spy on the airport's security procedures, including passenger screening and boarding processes, and report what he had learned.
It said the man who directed the boy had not been located.
"The service, in liaison with the aviation security of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, disrupted a spying network mounted by the Boko Haram terrorists," DSS spokesman Tony Opuiyo said in the statement.

Properties › Buildings Should Not Be Vacant For More Than Six Months – Ex-fcta Director by emamos(op): 10:47am On Aug 29, 2015
The international best practice is that no building should remain vacant for more than six months.
Malam Yahaya Yusuf, former Director, Department of Development Control, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), said this in Abuja on Friday.
Yusuf spoke at a send-off party held in his honour by the staff of the department.
The ex-director said that the number of completed but unoccupied structures in the territory had become a matter of serious concern in the FCT.
He urged the department to sanction such developers.
“The international best practice is that no completed structure is expected to remain unoccupied for more than six months.
“We have submitted a proposal to that effect and we are awaiting its endorsement before we begin implementation and I urge colleagues not to relent on the proposal.
“Sanctions that will arise from that proposal will make it unprofitable for developers to allow their houses to remain unoccupied for too long.
“We do not derive joy from pulling down illegal structures but it comes as a last resort after other avenues
proved ineffective.
“I tell junior colleagues to exhibit professionalism at all times in the discharge of their official duties.
“We should continue to pursue all those initiatives that make the department stand out in the area of city management and development control’’, Yusuf said.
Yusuf said various initiatives of the department were designed to make building approval faster and more effective.
Yusuf thanked staff of the department for their support over the years, advising them to adhere to regulations in performing their functions of controlling development in the FCT.
Mrs Safiya Umar, the Acting Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), said Yusuf’s exit would create a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
She advised other members of staff to emulate his tenacity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
“Malam Yusuf is leaving a great vacuum and his shoes will be difficult to fill, considering the value he has added to the department.
“I urge other members of staff to emulate his dedication, tenacity and professionalism so that this vacuum will not become visible to members of the public’’, Umar said.
Yusuf joined the department in 2006, after transferring his service from Kogi State civil service. (NAN)

Politics › Outsider Emerging Customs Boss Rubbishes Career Progression – Group Tells Buhari by emamos(op): 10:38am On Aug 29, 2015
The League of Maritime Editors has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to have a rethink over the appointment of Col Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd) as the new Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service.

Its President, Ovie Edomi, yesterday said the development could kill professionalism and spur low morale, which will automatically impact on revenue drive.

A statement he signed said: “First, the desire of every top Customs officer is to get to the peak of the career and impact on younger officers but in a situation where officers who have gotten to the peak cannot be called upon to head the Customs, it creates room for lack of confidence, low morale and dissatisfaction among the rank and file.

“The crop of Customs officers that Nigeria presently have are well trained at home and abroad and can stand out amongst other Customs officers globally. It would only have been fair for Mr President to appoint from among the rank and file of the top Customs officers a Comptroller-General, in the spirit of career progression and professionalism

“No doubt, Mr President may have made the appointment, but Nigerians must understand that the Nigerian Customs service of today occupies a place of pride in the World Customs Association, an arm of the World Trade Organization because of the professionalism that has been displayed over the last decade by Nigerian Customs officers.

“While our beloved President may be thinking of generating revenue and blocking linkages in the Customs, professionalism that makes the Customs so highly respected amongst nations must not be destroyed. It is in this light, that l call on Mr President to take another look at the appointment of a military man to head the Customs.”

Crime › Why We Abandoned Textile Business For Cocaine Smuggling – Suspects by emamos(op): 7:14pm On Aug 26, 2015
Two suspected drug‎ traffickers have narrated to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency the reason they abandoned their once thriving businesses for cocaine smuggling.
Frank Obiekwe and Jacob Okoye were arrested on their way to Hong Kong by NDLEA officials during an outward screening of passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
A third suspect, Prince Chukwunyere, was also arrested on his way to Italy.
The trio allegedly ingested 233 wraps of powdery substances that tested positive to cocaine with a weight of 5.05 kilogrammes.
The NDLEA said in a press release on Wednesday that‎ the suspects had voluntarily recorded their statements with investigators.
Mr. Obiekwe, 47, allegedly ingested 80 wraps of the powdery substance weighing 1.930kg was arrested during a screening of passengers on an Emirates airline.
“I lost my father when I was a Merchant of Light Secondary School between 1983 and 1988,” the NDLEA quoted Mr. Obiekwe as saying in his statement.
‎”I was given admission at Edo State University but dropped out in 300 levels due to lack of sponsorship.
“In 1997, I came to Lagos and started textile business. Later I began to buy my goods from Czech Republic and Hong Kong before my business suffered serious setback.”
Mr. Obiekwe, who hails from Anambra State, said that in the course of seeking assistance to resuscitate his business, he ventured into drug trafficking.
“I was given the drug in a restaurant at Onitsha and they ‎promised to pay me 10,000 dollars. It took me eight hours to swallow the drugs but was arrested at the airport.”
Mr. Okoye, who allegedly ingested 70 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.515kg,‎ was nabbed during passengers’ screening on an Etihad flight.
The 43-year old said that he met his sponsor at a wedding ceremony.
“I used to import textiles from Dubai and Hong Kong,” said Mr. Okoye, who stated that he had a Diploma in Computer Science at the Institute of Management Technology, Enugu.
“My business was flourishing and I have traveled to Hong Kong over 15 times. I later had problem that took my capital and I was stranded. That was what led me into drug trafficking,” Mr. Okoye, who also hails from Anambra State, said.
“I was forced to swallow drugs for many hours in order to continue with my textile business. They promised to pay me over a million naira.
For Mr. Chukwunyere, 39, it was the quest to “settle his bills” that led him into drug trafficking, according to the NDLEA.
‎The suspect, who hails from Imo State, allegedly swallowed 83 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.605kg and was arrested on a Lufthansa flight to Bologna, Italy, through Frankfurt.
“I am a businessman. I supply teaching materials. Armed robbers attacked me and I lost one of my eyes in the process,” said Mr. Chukwunyere, according to the NDLEA.
“As I speak, I owe over 15 million naira. I am unable to pay my rent, my children’s school fees and even feeding.
“I have no rest of mind because my creditors are on my neck daily. This is my first time of trafficking drugs and I was promised 4,000 Euros.”
‎Ahmadu Giade, the NDLEA Chairman, expressed concern over the way drug traffickers expose themselves to danger by ingesting poisonous drugs.
“It is very worrisome that highly poisonous substances like cocaine, methamphetamine and similar drugs are brazenly ingested by drug suspects,” Mr. Giade said.
“Despite the attendant risk, these suspected drug traffick‎ers could still afford to ingest 233 wraps of narcotics. The agency will continue to sensitize members of the public on the priceless benefits of a drug-free society.”

Politics › Angry Oshiomhole Tears Apart Orubebe, Says Ex-minister Deserves To Rot In Jail by emamos(op): 6:57pm On Aug 26, 2015
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Wednesday said former Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe is afraid of President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned probe of several billions of naira squandered on the East-West road and on the Amnesty programme under his watch as Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs.
The governor said that fear of an impending probe was what triggered Mr. Orubebe’s latest outburst in the media.
Mr. Orubebe had on Tuesday described the Edo Governor as a “villa sycophant”.
The former minister, who had a chat with some journalists in Abuja, described Mr. Oshiomhole as someone who is willing to switch allegiance to whoever is in power at any point in time.
He chastised the Edo governor for speaking against former President Goodluck Jonathan who he called a great leader.
“Oshiomhole is an ingrate and a popular villa sycophant who is quick to switch allegiance to whomever is in power,” Mr. Orubebe said.
Mr. Oshiomhole, in a statement by his spokesperson, Peter Okhiria, said the “incompetence” of people like Mr. Orubebe contributed to the dismal failure of the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan.
“Our attention has been drawn to the latest outburst of one clown called Godsday Orubebe in his attempt to taint the image of the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
“It is no surprise that the former president, Goodluck Jonathan, failed woefully because he surrounded himself with such charlatans as Godsday Orubebe, whose only credential is his ethnic origin and the large size of his bowler hat.
“Here was a man whose un-ministerial conduct at the election nearly plunged the nation into an avoidable crisis
“Does Orubebe really think Nigerians are fools, does he truly believe Nigerians have forgotten so soon the ignoble role he played in his attempt to truncate the release of the election results and announcement of the eventual winner of that election, a move which could have plunged the nation into another civil war?
“Is it not a shame that Orubebe who should be cooling off his heel in jail for that failed plot to truncate democracy has now found a convoluted voice?
“We are not surprised at the timing of Orubebe’s latest outburst. It is no doubt unconnected with the planned probe by President Muhammadu Buhari of the billions of naira allocated to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, even as the East-West road remains in bad shape and the probe of the fleecing of amnesty funds under his watch.
“We are aware that Orubebe, the perpetual noise maker, has raised the decibel of his noise a notch higher so that he would have a ready-made defence of witch-hunting if he is indicted in the planned probe of Amnesty funds.
“Orubebe is a yesterday’s man. We could have chosen to ignore him like his Delta brother, Mr. Sunny Onuesoke, an unknown entity who doesn’t know the arithmetic of financing, but decided to delve into a matter of a World Bank loan, something completely beyond his mental and intellectual capacity, but we simply can’t let Orubebe have the last say.
“We are not unaware that it has now become the fad for drowning and neophyte politicians to take cheap shots at the impeccable character of the Comrade Governor just to gain cheap publicity. However, Orubebe’s image, as he himself knows, is beyond redemption.
“Is it not laughable that Orubebe, the clown, accused Oshiomhole of biting the fingers that fed him? Pray, how did Jonathan feed Oshiomhole? Did he feed Oshiomhole by supervising over a government that fleeced the nation of trillions of naira, thereby denying Edo State her rightful share of funds for development? Or did he feed Oshiomhole by canvassing votes for him!
“Our candid advice is for Orubebe, a perpetual failed governorship aspirant, to go to his family and apologise for the irreparable damage done to the family name with his infamous outburst beamed live to the whole world, before coming forward to confront Governor Adams Oshiomhole who is not in any way in the same class as him.

Politics › Nigerians Will Stone Jonathan And His Men To Death If They Discover Their Loot – by emamos(op): 9:31am On Aug 23, 2015
Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has stated that Nigerians might be forced to stone former President Goodluck Jonathan and his cabinet members to death if they have full details of the money that went missing under the last administration.
Oshiomole, in an interview with Vanguard said that under the leadership of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Federal Government spent the sum of N140billion on consultancy for the Second Niger bridge.
”If Nigerians know what these people did, they will stone them to death, jungle justice. 700 million dollars gone on second Niger bridge without any bridge to show”.
He inisted that the former ruling party did not mean anything good for Nigeria, saying that the party was vissionless and lacks focus.
According to him, “First, is that the PDP does not believe in development and for them anything that will bring prosperity to the people negates what they stand for. Which is politics for the benefit of PDP leaders.
“And of course, they are embarrassed by the amount of goodwill that we have continued to enjoy from the people of the state; it is not easy to be in government for six and half years and you can still walk the streets – on and off. You find people trooping out to hail you and, see, they have been praying, with the declining oil prices such that many states can’t pay salaries”.

Crime › 11 killed as Boko Haram ambushes new Nigerian army chief Buratai in northeast by emamos(op):
MILITANTS ambushed a convoy carrying the head of the Nigerian army on Saturday. Ten of the attackers and one soldier died in the ensuing firefight in Faljari village east of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state in the north east, the army said in a statement on Sunday.
Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai was unharmed. “The terrorists encountered overwhelming firepower from the troops,” army spokesman Sani Usman said in the statement. Buratai was appointed army chief only in July.
The soldiers captured five militants, he said. Borno is the heartland of Boko Haram’s six-year campaign to impose its version of Shariah, or Islamic law, on Africa’s biggest economy and most populous country of 170 million.
The group has killed more than 13,000 people in bomb and gun attacks, mainly in the northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, according to the government.
Boko Haram has stepped up attacks since losing territory earlier this year following a regional offensive by forces from Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly vowed to crush the insurgency since coming to power in May. Saturday’s ambush came barely 24 hours after two soldiers were killed by land mines near the town of Dikwa, also in Borno.
Two others were critically injured in the explosion and are being treated at a military hospital, the army said in a separate statement on Friday.

Christianity Etc › Pastor Reveals How Boko Haram Killed 8,000 Members Of His Church by emamos(op): 8:12am On Aug 23, 2015
President of Ekklisiyar Yan’uwa A Nigeria, EYN (Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), Rev. Samuel Dali, has disclosed that no fewer than 8,000 of his members have been killed by members of the Boko Haram in the North-East zone of the country.

He, however, expressed hope that the war against Boko Haram would be won.

The cleric said aside the massacre of his church members, 70% of church facilities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States were destroyed in series of attacks championed by the insurgents.
Yan’uwa was, however, optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari would end the activities of Boko Haram.

Speaking with journalists in his Jos office, the cleric lamented that most of the church’s pastors had lost their jobs as their places of worship had been burnt and members killed, adding that 176 of the kidnapped Chibok girls were his members.

“Nigeria will overcome the Boko Haram challenge soon. 70% of our churches have been destroyed in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states by Boko Haram; over 8,000 of our members were killed. 176 of the girls kidnapped in Chibok are our members,” he stated.

Politics › How N120bn N’assembly Annual Budget Is Spent, Investigation Reveals by emamos(op):
Senator draws N1.4m monthly salary, Rep N1.1m
The N120 billion allocated to the National Assembly in the 2015 budget is not spent by the 109 Senators and 360 members alone, contrary to popular belief, THISDAY has learnt.
Instead, investigation has revealed that there are about 4,000 individuals, 145 committees, nine local and foreign bodies as well as four agencies which share the budget allocated to the federal legislature.
According to findings, part of the money is also expended on capital expenditure, general services, organising public hearings, pursuing various litigations, hiring consultants, performing oversight functions which is the other key function of the legislative institution apart from law-making, and foreign and local travels.
According to documents obtained from the Ministry of Finance and the National Assembly, the current legislature has the smallest allocation of N120 billion, which is 2.67 per cent of the 2015 national budget of N4.5 trillion, and N30 billion less than what was allocated to the same institution in the last five years.
The reduction in budgetary allocation was self initiated by the lawmakers in response to the dwindling revenue of the federation, findings also revealed.
Also, the documents revealed that 7,200 individuals draw salaries and allowances from the National Assembly, which include 109 Senators, 360 members of the House of Representatives, 13 commissioners in the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), 3,208 members of staff of the commission and 337 members of the management staff, 3,024 legislative aides, seven members of board of the National Institute of Legislative Studies (NIALS) with 115 staff members of the institute.
Also, it was discovered that funds are allocated to servicing of the 54 Senate standing committees and 91 House of Representatives standing committees, while the legislative institution also fulfils its financial obligations to bodies like the inter-Parliamentary Union, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Pan African Parliament, ECOWAS Parliament, African, Carribean and Pacific - EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, Shoora/Arab Parliament and National Conference of State Legislatures.
From the fund, a senator gets a monthly salary of N1.4 million while his colleague in the House gets N1.1 million a month. The breakdown of the monthly salary include wardrobe allowance of N42,216 and N41,358 for Senator and Representative respectively, and N337,733 and N330,868 for housing allowance. Other components of the monthly salary include basic salary (N168,866 for Senators and N165,435 for Reps); vehicle maintenance (N126,650 and N124,075 respectively), entertainment, utility, domestic staff, constituency, newspaper, recess and personal assistant.
The salaries and allowances were however fixed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) which is constitutionally charged with the responsibility of determining the remuneration appropriate for all political, judicial and public office holders.
The National Assembly, it was learnt, also spend money on general services which include but are not limited to maintenance of its huge complex, fueling of power generating plants, insurance of building, vehicles and other capital assets.
Funds are allocated to purchase of utility vehicles, purchase of office equipment as well as rehabilitation and repairs of the National Assembly complex, findings also revealed.
A document obtained during the investigation also noted that “members of the National Assembly are not allocated funds for constituency projects... They are neither given funds to execute projects in their constituencies nor do they prequalify Contractors for such projects. The practice is that, some relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the executive arm of government allow members of the National Assembly to indicate where certain projects should be sited in their constituencies. The procurement processes as well as funding for these projects remain an executive function.”
A Senator, who spoke on the issue, said “apart from all these people who are documented as legally sharing the National Assembly budget, how about the thousands of others that we provide for?
The Senators and Representatives are the agencies for social security in this country. Without any statutory social security programme, our constituents besiege our home and offices for one financial assistance or the other. So, people who bandy about exaggerated figures about our allowances should know they are simply undermining democracy.”
Another Senator lamented that “people who are talking about jumbo salary figures for the National Assembly are simply trying to turn the people against us. Those figures are not correct.
