Politics › They're Back: Boko Haram's Return Under Buhari by emamos(op):
This is not the Nigeria that Muhammadu Buhari promised us in the build-up towards the presidential election. Neither is it the one he promised after he had won.
In a nationally-televised speech, hours after his declaration as president-elect, Buhari had told Nigerians: "Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collective will."
Fast-forward three months, and it instead looks as if it was the Boko Haram commander who directed that statement towards the Nigerian people.
In less than three months of Buhari's reign, the gory era of terrorism is back in Nigeria, and the insurgents are furiously striking the people again and again.

Politics › CNPP Slams Abdulsalami, Sultan, Kukah, Declares Support For Buhari’s Anti-corrup by emamos(op): 7:48am On Aug 15, 2015
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties has expressed outrage over the recent suggestion by the National Peace Committee led by a former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, that President Muhammadu Buhari should tread cautiously in the fight against corruption.

The spokesperson of the committee and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, asked Mr. Buhari to follow due process in the ongoing anti-graft war.

He also said former President Goodluck Jonathan did some spectacular things that the incumbent president would appreciate.

The CNPP, in a statement on Friday by its spokesperson, Osita Okechukwu, described the view of the committee as “subtle and scary blackmail,” which could wittingly or unwittingly dampen the raging momentum of the war against corruption being waged by the president.

“We sincerely believe with time the war against corruption will touch even unintended persons, groups and quarters; with the impeccable antecedent of Mr President. Let the music play on as looters have nowhere to hide,” it said.

The group said it had carefully perused the mandate of the committee but could not locate where the issue of stolen funds featured.

Stating that it was at a loss why the NPC skipped its brief, the CNPP said it was worried that the committee, which also has the Sultan of Sokoto has a member, had been “allowed to continue to do what only God knows.”

It added, “It is our candid view that why more Nigerian voters voted for President Buhari than for our dear ex-president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR; is simply the confidence the voters had in the integrity and transparency quotient of Mr. President.

“In other words, the social contract between President Buhari and Nigerians is to wage strident war against corruption, and return stolen funds for the development of our dilapidated social and physical infrastructure.

“More so this is the backbone of the change mantra, as stipulated in the All Progressives Congress’s Manifesto and commitment President Buhari made in the course of the presidential campaign. It is a debt and a bond.”

The CNPP said though it agreed that conceding defeat in primitive climes as Mr. Jonathan did after the presidential election was noble, the crass, pervasive and unbridled corruption which took place under the former president’s watch was more heinous.

It argued that protecting the former president would smack of intimidation.

The group said the Jonathan regime, like the previous ones since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999, defied the timeless African tradition, which admonished leaders not to steal and if they are tempted to do so, that they should steal in such a manner that the owners will not know.

“They looted (the treasury) as if there is no tomorrow, and as if Nigerians are fools; that today we are impoverished, despondent and hapless in the midst of unprecedented oil revenue,” the CNPP said.

“Accordingly, for any group as highly placed as the National Peace Committee to resort to subtle and scary blackmail to subvert and dampen this momentum of war against corruption is to say the least – unkind cut if not ungodly cut.

“For us, the war against corruption is being waged in accordance with the spirit and letters of the law; therefore let the momentum of war against corruption continue.”

Nairaland General › How To Distinguish Between The Important News And The News That Can Be Ignored by emamos(op): 10:49pm On Aug 14, 2015
There is no hard and fast rule to distinguishing between various types of news and the importance that they have. The amount of weight or significance applied to various news reports is dependent on where the news is coming from, what the news is about, and its severity.
If we have a situation where a number of news stories are coming out, we need to be aware of the major economies and the implications the news will have upon them. Any news which comes out relating to major economies – the US, the EU, the Far East – will take precedent over news from smaller economies. The reason is that these economies play a larger part in the world markets, not only in trading, but also in market capitalization.
Relative Impact of Major Economies
So understanding what nation or region the news relates to is critical. If it is a major nation we need to pay it more attention, and if it is a smaller nation we can pay it less attention. This also applies to economic releases. For example, if Swedish industrial production figures are released, followed by German industrial production figures, we would put greater focus on the German data as it is a bigger and more influential economy, and is consequently a bigger industrial producer. In such a scenario the German figure would take precedence.
Unfortunately, in reality it’s not as clear cut however. If for example important news such as GDP from the Swedish economy came out way off analysts’ expectations that could have a large impact, but generally speaking the bigger economies figure will almost always take precedence.
Being aware of this will help you to determine which news to ignore or which figures to put aside and pay attention to. You do not want to trade off smaller news because the markets usually do not move to that news, so you may end up getting into a trade that will have little or no reaction which in turn could turn into an unprofitable trade. So you therefore need to be aware of which economies are most important, and the market they move.
Market moving news is generally from the bigger, developed nations.

Properties › C-of-o Now Available For N15,000 In Ondo, Ready In Eight Weeks by emamos(op): 10:16pm On Aug 14, 2015
Property owners in Ondo state can now obtain titles for them for a minimum fee of N15,000 and maximum of N25,000 even with the processing and delivery period of the certificates pegged at 8 weeks.
Giving details of the new deal at a Stakeholders meeting in his office on Friday, the state Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko said issuance of Certificate of Occupancy in the state will be done within eight weeks for N25,000 in urban areas, maximum of N20,000 in semi-urban areas and maximum of N15,000 in the rural areas of the state.
He said the package is as a result of government’s digitalised Certificate of Occupancy scheme which he flagged off on Thursday with some beneficiaries presented with their certificates . He enjoined stakeholders to take advantage of the scheme because according to the Governor, a house is useless to the owner without the title.
The Governor who assured the people that authentic Certificate of Occupancy is power to its owner that can be used as collateral added that the digitalised Certificate of Occupancy is the best in Nigeria and that Land is a very important resource.
He said the digitalised Certificate of Occupancy has a solid security input that cannot be forged or syndicated adding that over 14,000 properties have been demarcated in Akure and that close to 6,000 of it has been publicly displayed.

Politics › NNPC Reform: Nigeria Oil Workers Prepare For Showdown With Buhari by emamos(op): 9:56pm On Aug 14, 2015
Nigeria’s oil workers on Friday criticised the on-going reform in the oil and gas industry, and vowed to take steps to protect their members’ interest.
The workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, NUPENGASSAN, described the reform as a cover-up and vindictive actions against their members. They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to call the newly appointed Group Managing Director, GMD, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Emmanuel Kachikwu, to order by direct him to stop the on-going sack in the Corporation.
Vowing to give equal response to whatever actions of government they consider capable of suppressing worker’s interests, the unions suggested that a team should be set up immediately to review Mr. Kachikwu’s actions so far in the interest of justice, equity and fairness.
Within two weeks of the commencement of the reform, Mr. Kachikwu has carried out massive restructuring of the management of the corporation.
Apart from the sack and re-composition of the board, Mr. Kachikwu has retired 38 top management staff, pruning the top hierarchy of the corporation from 122 to 83, while reducing the operational directorates from eight to four.
New Group Executive Directors, GEDs, have since been appointed for the new directorates, along with Group General Managers, GGMs, for the various divisions, a move the new oil chief said was to rid the corporation of corruption and make it more efficient and profitable.
Regardless, the oil workers in a joint statement by the President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Francis Johnson, and his counterpart in the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Igwe Achese, accused the NNPC management of executing an agenda that did not carry the workers’ unions along.
The statement, which was also signed by their General Secretaries – Bayo Olowoshile and Joseph Ogbebor respectively- also accused Mr. Kachikwu of pursuing an agenda contrary to the idea canvassed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While we are fully in support of the fight against corruption, the fight itself should not be turned against workers whom government swore to protect,” the oil workers said.
“The ongoing exercise portends a great danger in the oil sector if workers are meant to bear the brunt of government’s current action where the fight against corruption is now being used as an act of vindictiveness against workers.”
The on-going exercise, the oil workers said, did not show any attempt to fight corruption and block leakages, but was “an act of cover up.”
“We dare the new GMD of NNPC, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to recover the stolen trillions of Naira in the sector than retiring and sacking of innocent workers. We are quite sure that the on-going action is not the idea of our dear President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”
As players in all spheres of the industry’s operation, the unions said they have been trying to meet with the President to review the on-going reforms in the NNPC, saying they have so far been kept in the dark by his protocol staff.
Despite being the representatives of organized workers in the industry, the union leaders claimed all their suggestions on the critical challenges affecting the on-going reforms were being not being considered by the authorities.
They listed the issues to include the review of industry policy and fiscal framework; cash call and counterpart funding obligations; stability of the downstream oil and gas sector; pipeline sabotage and oil theft.
On the NNPC restructuring, the oil workers said the gale of abrupt loss of jobs in the corporation was sending very wrong signals to their members throughout the oil and gas sector, particularly about their job security.
Reminding government of its promise to create jobs through the entire strata of the economy, they noted that the situation in the NNPC was likely to have the opposite effect.
“We believe people are not the problem, but the structure put in place. If there are strong structures and institutions, the organization will be a more effective place,” the unions stated.
“So instead of a blanket sacking of workers, which other organizations are likely to key into, government reforms should be geared towards putting in place effective and strong structures and institutions that will meet the numerous challenges currently bedevilling the oil and gas sector in particular and the nation in general.”
