Foreign Affairs › I Have Brain Cancer – Jimmy Carter by emamos(op): 8:10am On Aug 21, 2015
[b]Former American President Jimmy Carter announced Thursday that his cancer is on four small spots on his brain and he will immediately begin radiation treatment.
On learning that the cancer had spread beyond his liver, Carter said, “I just thought I had a few weeks left, but I was surprisingly at ease. I’ve had a wonderful life.”
So far, the pain has been “very slight,” Carter said, and he hasn’t experienced any weakness or debility. Still, he will cut back on his work with the Carter Center and will give the treatment regimen his “top priority.” His first radiation treatment was set for Thursday afternoon.
Carter, appearing in a dark blazer, red tie and jeans and surrounded by friends and family, said at first he thought that the cancer was confined to his liver and that an operation earlier this month completely removed it.
But that afternoon an MRI showed it was on his brain.
Carter didn’t give any prognosis but spoke about receiving treatments for at least several months and left open the possibility of traveling to Nepal in November.
The Carter Center announced that he had a small mass removed from his liver Aug. 3. He announced Aug. 12 that surgery found cancer that has spread to other parts of his body. Doctors removed about a tenth of his liver during the surgery, he said. He said it’s still not clear exactly where the cancer originated.
“So far, the only place they’ve known about cancer has been my liver and my brain,” he said.
His father, brother and two sisters died of pancreatic cancer. His mother died of breast cancer that spread to other organs. Carter said no cancer has been found on his pancreas.

Politics › Petrol Subsidy Drops By N1bn, Now N29.99/litre by emamos(op): 7:47am On Aug 21, 2015
[b]According to the latest petroleum pricing statistics from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), the federal government’s daily spending on petrol subsidy has dropped to N1.1bn as at Tuesday from an average of N2.06bn in June and N1.6bn in July, Daily Trustreports.
The Latest figures from the PPPRA showed that the government is now paying N29.99 as subsidy on every litre of petrol consumed in the country, down from N51.61 per litre in mid-June and N42.35 paid mid-July.
The pricing template dated Tuesday August 18, 2015 said that the Expected Open Market Price (EOMP) or total cost of petrol was N116.99 per litre down from N129.35 in June. This is against a regulated retail price of N87 per litre.
Prior to the last two months, oil price had been unsteadily rising and a rise in crude oil prices, by implication, means a rise in subsidy paid by government to marketers to import the product. The Head, Energy Research at Ecobank, Dolapo Oni also noted that the resumption of petrol refining at Warri and Port Harcourt refineries could also have contributed to a slight reduction in fuel subsidies,

Politics › Boko Haram’s End In Sight – Buhari by emamos(op):
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday reaffirmed his conviction that the end of the Boko Haram insurgency is in sight with the new vigour the war against terrorism is being prosecuted by Nigeria and her allies.
Speaking during an audience with Mr. Mousa Faki Mahamat, the Chadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of President Idris Deby, President Buhari said with higher morale among troops fighting the Boko Haram militants and their improved logistics, equipment and training, a rapid end to the insurgency should be expected.
The President, however said, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, that Nigeria and Chad must be prepared to make more sacrifices to end the scourge of Boko Haram since they were at the “very heart of the insurgency.”
“We will sustain our effort and the insurgents will be defeated soon,” President Buhari said.
The Chadian minister said President Deby appreciated the leadership being shown by President Buhari in the war against terrorism.
“We also appreciate the diligence shown in appointing a commander for the Multinational Joint Task Force, and President Deby believes that the fight will end in a few months.
“Our people rely on us to end the insurgency, because economic development is being hampered. This fight has to come to an end. My coming here is to reaffirm our full commitment. Beyond the number of troops earlier announced, Chad is still ready to commit more soldiers.
“The enemy is weakened already. Let’s stand firm, and neutralize them,” he stated.

Politics › Adamawa Varsity Reopens, Recruits 80 Hunters by emamos(op): 7:19pm On Aug 20, 2015
The authorities of Adamawa State University, Mubi, have recruited 80 vigilante men and hunters to ensure the security of the university community.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Joshua Shall, disclosed this to newsmen in Mubi on Thursday, just as the institution resumed academic activities.
Shall said the institution was aware of the complementary role played by the vigilance groups and hunters assisting the military to recapture Mubi town after it was overran by insurgents in October 2014, and therefore decided to recruited them to continue with their complementary role.
Shall, who said 95% of the students had resumed classes, stated that the institution lost 11 staff and three students, while property worth N5 billion were destroyed by the insurgents.
“They (insurgents) broke into all offices, staff quarters, hostels, laboratories, stores and looted properties,” he said.
The vice chancellor said the school managed to re-open following the intervention it received from TETFund which supported it with N250 million.
He said TETFund also approved a substantial amount of money for the institution which his management was now trying to access to sustain the ongoing rehabilitation in the university.
While lauding TETFund for the support, Shall also commended the national body of Academic Staff Union of Universities for donating N21 million to its members in the university.
He said the university had also compiled the lists of damages incurred by its staff and submitted same to the Victim Support Fund for possible assistance.

Politics › Man Stabs Pregnant Wife To Death Over Extra-marital Affair, Commits Suicide by emamos(op): 7:10pm On Aug 20, 2015
A Zimbabwean wheelbarrow operator, Nkululeko Mlotshwa, who caught his pregnant wife having sex with her ex-husband, has stabbed her to death, using an axe before committing suicide
Kuzeyanyaya reports that Mlotshwa had long suspected his wife, Stabile Dube of cheating on him with her former husband, a money changer.
He was said to have interrogated her on several occasions but she always denied having anything to do with the man until he caught them in the act.
The tragedy occurred Monday but was only discovered by neighbours on Tuesday at the family’s house in Mapfungautsi, a town in Gokwe area of the country after seeing a blood stained axe in front of the couple’s house.
Dube, who had two children with her ex-husband, was also suspected to be carrying the man’s pregnancy even when living with another man. After divorcing her first husband, Dube married Mlotshwa in 2011 and the couple were yet to have a child of their own for some years until Dube became pregnant recently.
Reacting to the incident, a neighbour noted that he was aware of the misunderstanding between the couple because Mlotshwa had confided in him that his wife had continued to secretly see her ex-husband.
The report further stated that a family source said, “Dube was heavily pregnant at the time of her death and it’s believed that the ex-husband was responsible. Mlotshwa was also known as Malume in Mapfungautsi. Malume was popular since he used to carry people’s stuff using his pushcart.
“On Monday afternoon, Mlotshwa received a tip-off that Dube and her ex-husband were camped at his house. Mlotshwa was at the town centre touting for clients when he got the message. He wasted no time and rushed home where he forcibly opened the bedroom door. Dube’s ex-husband immediately escaped.”
“We don’t know what happened to the duo but on the next morning, we were called to the house when some people said they hadn’t seen the couple the whole day. They said there was a blood-stained axe outside the house.
“We were shocked to see the horrible sight of the severed head of Dube and the body of Mlotshwa hanging from the roof.
“The room looked like a slaughter house with blood and small pieces of human flesh all over the place.”
Commenting on the tragedy, the police, in a statement, said they suspected Mlotshwa axed his wife to death before committing suicide.

Politics › New PDP Chairman To Emerge Next Month by emamos(op): 7:33pm On Aug 19, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will get another national chairman in September.
This is as the tenure of the acting chairman, Chief Uche Secondus, will expire soon.
He will revert to his former status as deputy national chairman.
Punch reports that 20 candidates from the North-East zone were jostling to become the PDP boss.
The Convener of the Restart PDP Project Committee, Nwosu Butches, who said this at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, called on the zone to present credible candidates that could pilot the party to a stronger level.
He expressed confidence that the party would present a national chairman that will have “the appeal that is needed at this point in time which is credibility and strong character and the goodwill that Nigerians will rely on to give PDP back a chance at governance”.
According to him, the committee would in few weeks begin wider consultations with critical stakeholders, including and most especially the G34 founding fathers.
He said, “In a few days time, the tenure of the present acting national chairman of our national party will be over.
“He is acting as the constitution of our party stipulated for a short period when the zone that created the vacancy will present another candidate for the chairmanship.
“We want to also call on the North-East Zone that is supposed to present a candidate who will complete the tenure up to March of this incumbent NWC, to make sure they do their home work and give the party a very credible candidate, a candidate with character, a candidate with the appeal that Nigerians will see and know this is a rebranded PDP

Crime › Cops Who Tortured 20-year-old To Death Granted Bail In Ondo State by emamos(op): 5:35pm On Aug 19, 2015
The police corporal who tortured Mohammed Oluwatobi Badmus, the 20-year-old young son of a popular hotelier, to death has been arraigned at a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
by Sahara Reporters, New York Aug 19, 2015
Father of torture victime, Raheem Afolayemi Badmus has petitioned Police IG
The police corporal who tortured Mohammed Oluwatobi Badmus, the 20-year-old young son of a popular hotelier, to death has been arraigned at a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
30-year-old Corporal Adesola Awodeyi was arraigned alongside two of his accomplices, Adedeji Adekunle, 32, and Adepetu Olamilekan, 27, before Chief Magistrate Charity Adeyanju.
At a court session on Monday, the three killers were arraigned and charged with an offence of “manslaughter,” as recommended by the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP). The three pleaded “not guilty” to the crime.
After having been kept in police detention for thirteen months prior to being arraigned, the three were granted bail at a sum of N500,000, with two sureties each in like sum.
The three killers were policemen attached to the “B Division” of the Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
They were in police detention for thirteen months prior to being arraigned.
The young Mr. Badmus died on July 21st, 2014, after the three cops tortured him at the police detention cell. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he finally gave up the ghost.
A smartphone said to be the property of Bisi Adedugbagbe of the Celestial Church of God, Ife-Oluwa Parish in Akure, was at the center of the issue.
Mr. Adedugbagbe had reported the phone stolen to his police friend, Corporal Awodeyi of the B Division police station, who arrested Mr. Badmus for the theft.
Mr. Badmus’s father, Raheem Afolayan Badmus, owner of the popular Ages Hotel in Akure, believes that the law enforcement agents tortured his son, a graduate student of Idris Premier College at Ilesha Garage Akure, by giving him a large dose of a chemical substance to inhale until he died.
Following the case, an autopsy was conducted to determine the real cause of Oluwatobi’s death but surprisingly two different reports emerged.
The police had consulted a pathologist for the autopsy, stating that the death of the deceased was natural, but the family rejected the report and solicited another autopsy, which stated that the young Mr. Badmus had not died of natural causes.
The remains of the 20 year-old youngster were kept at the morgue of Ondo State’s general hospital for over a year after the case had been begun, but the court finally ordered the remains be released to the family for burial.
Magistrate Charity Adeyanju adjourned the case until September 30th, 2015.

Family › Prophet Seeks Divorce From Fourth Wife by emamos(op): 5:21pm On Aug 19, 2015
Cleric seeks divorce from 4th wife

A 65-year-old cleric, Olowolade David Laizer, is seeking divorce from his fourth wife, Esther Anuoluwapo Laizer, after 31 years of marriage.

Laizer, who has six wives, told a customary court sitting in Ikorodu on Wednesday that the 55-year-old woman lacks respect for the house of God.

The cleric alleged that his wife rains curses on his church at the slightest provocation and had denied him conjugal rights for over a year.

Laizer gave his church’s address as 8/4 Laizer Estate, Graceland, Bayeku, Ikorodu and said the couple’s problems started when they lost their first son in 2013.

The deceased was a university student outside the state, but died after a brief illness on his way to Lagos, he told the court.

‘There was a parental dispute between her family and mine when we wanted to get married, so, we had to do two separate introductions,’ the cleric added.

“She even said I would die within three years if I divorce her,” he added.

The wife, a teacher, had a different story.

“He preaches about me in church, saying all sorts of things. He talks about what happens with me in his sermons.

‘Yes, I’ve denied him of sex for over a year now, but it’s because he said my private part is smelling, after 31 years of marriage and five children.

‘Four days after I lost my son, his sixth wife came into my room and took my pant and bra. I don’t know what she used it for, but she returned it later.

“She also cooked for me and put six pieces of meat in the soup. I refused to eat it because I don’t know what that meant or who sent her,” she stated.

The court’s president, Olu Adebiyi, encouraged both parties to keep the peace and told them to come with their family members on September 14 for possible reconciliation.
