PoliticsKogi West: PDP Boycotts Observation Of Electoral Material Distribution by Emedu(op): 11:25am On Nov 29, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday boycotted the observation of distribution of electoral material by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Chairman Inter Party Advisory Council, Ilyas Badenga disclosed this Thursday night while speaking on the sideline of a stakeholders meeting where 16 political parties declared their support for APC candidate, Senator Smart Adeyemi.

Badenga however said that the boycott would not stop the council from giving their support for Adeyemi who they regard as the best among the candidates jostling for the job.

Badenga said Senator Adeyemi, while at the senate, had proved to be more trustworthy and reliable than other candidates jostling for the job.

“We have viewed and accessed the capability of Senator Adeyemi who had served the zone for two terms and we have come to the conclusion that he is the best and we have decided to queue behind him.”

Speaking at the endorsement meeting, Senator Smart Adeyemi said he was in politics to offer service to humanity and not avenue for self enrichment.

He said, “My mission in politics is to empower the people towards self reliance, and I promised not to disappoint all the parties that dropped their ambition to support me”.

Also speaking at the occasion, State chairman of All Progressive Congress, APC, Abdulahi Bello said that PDP’s boycott of electoral material distribution had no effect on the election, saying that the party had seen the handwriting of defeat on the wall.

“They know that they have no chance and that is why the are developing various antics, that would not stand the test of time,” Bello noted.

PoliticsCharles Oko Enya: Allow Buhari, Governors For Third Term by Emedu(op): 5:28pm On Nov 24, 2019
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi state, Hon. Charles Oko Enya, has beseeched a Federal High Court in Abakiliki, Ebonyi state, to direct the National Assembly and the Attorney-General of the Federation and minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to remove constitutional clauses hindering elected President and state governors from seeking a third term in office.

In his suit with No: FHC/AI/CS/90/19, which was filed at the court last Wednesday and made available to Daily Trust by his counsel, Barr. Iheanacho Agboti, the APC member is seeking for possible expungement of section 137(1) (b) and 182 (1) (b) in the 1999 constitution (as amended). He insisted that the sections were infringement on the fundamental human rights of the likes of President Muhammadu Buhari and all state governors excluding the legislators.Hon. Enya explained that the ongoing two-term tenure is discriminatory to section 42(1)(a) and articles 2 and 3 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples rights.

The defendants in the suit were the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr Mohammed Sani-Omolori, the National Assembly and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
Our reporter recalled that the applicant, (Hon. Enya), had served as the organising Secretary to President Buhari in the last 2019 polls.

According to him, “that section 137(1)(b)of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999 (as amended) restricting the president to only two terms of four years each, is inoperative by virtue of its discriminatory nature in relation to the executive and legislative branches of government in Nigeria, and therefore null and void and thus inapplicable”.

Enya, who is earnestly awaiting the hearing of the matter soon, says he’s seeking the order of the court to direct the first and second defendants to delete and expunge sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He also tasked the third defendant as the Chief Law Officer of the federation to give the needed support to the first and second defendants to commence a constitutional amendment that would remove the restrictions and the alleged discrimatory sections on tenure limits.

He added that he is seeking “Order of the court nullifying and setting aside section 137(1)(b) and 182(1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“And directing the first and second defendants to delete and expunge sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (as amended).”

EducationFederal University Lokoja; More Revelations On Sex-for-grade Scandal by Emedu(op): 11:14pm On Nov 23, 2019
What appears to be more revelations have continued to trail alleged sex-for-grade allegations rocking the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, with some aggrieved students expressing their anger over the negative development.
Some of the students whose faculty were mentioned have however kicked, saying they found no reason why they should be singled out.

A student from the History and International Studies Department, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said other facilities were only being envious of the ‘perfect relationship between the lecturers and students of the department.

While not ruling out the phenomenon in her department, she however said it should not be limited to theirs.
According to her: “I am not saying that it is not happening in history department, but it is not limited to us.

“Those from the other departments, especially Political Science, are behind this. I noticed early that the school authorities do not allow lecturers to invigilate us during exams, this was even before the story broke.

“Yes. We hear of this; from what I heard, it is even some of these girls that throw themselves at the lecturers, for marks.
“Some of the female students, especially the serious ones feel cheated; you will see a student that is apparently duller than you, score better grades. It’s shameful and quite discouraging.”
It was reported that a lecturer from one of the departments had openly talked down on lecturers from one of the departments, who during an exams, had tried to intervene on behalf of a male student over alleged infraction.

Report had it that there is unease among the academic and non academic rank and file of the FUL over alleged discreet investigation of some unidentified lecturers and non academic staff of the institution, for alleged sex for grades, by the management of the institution.

The investigations, said a source, is not limited to the academic departments alone, but extends to some non academic staff members, who were said to have perfected ways of intimidating female students into sexual relationships.
The source said others from the departments of economics and computer science are among those under investigated.
“It is a serious matter. Though it remains at the level of allegations. There is this particular lecturer who was said to have taken a fresh exams paper home, where he allowed a female student to rewrite a failed course. The lady in question is said to be sleeping with him.

“There are several other related allegations, more of which are in the history department. Some non academic staff members are being investigated too.

“The investigations is going on discreetly and it appears we have a can of worms on our hands here. Some of the male students are said to be the go-betweens in this sex for grade thing.

“Some staff are said to have gone low as to demand recharge card and snacks from students, particularly female students, who they allot marks.

“The situation is capable of undermining the academic discipline in the school. Management felt it should be nipped in the bud,” said the source who refused to divulge the name of any of the lecturer that is being investigated,” said the source.
Another student said that the situation was becoming embarrassing, as some of her “female colleagues sleeping with lecturers, openly flaunt it.

“We have three notorious lecturers in my department; everyone in the know are aware of what is happening, and there’s no way the authorities will not have gotten wind of the sleaze and dirty dealings.”

PoliticsNatasha Visits Family Of Burnt PDP Women Leader, Describes Death As Horrible by Emedu(op): 11:01pm On Nov 23, 2019
The governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP), Barr Natasha Akpoti, on Saturday, paid condolence visit to the family of women leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs Salome Acheju Abuh, who was burnt to death in Ochadamu, Ofu local government area of Kogi State.
Akpoti who paid a condolence visit to the decease family in Abuja described the death of Mrs Salome as horrible, adding that nobody deserves to die in such a manner.

“On behalf of the good people of Kogi state and Nigerian women, I have come here to sympathise with you, she did no wrong for supporting a candidate of her choice, even though we are in SDP, humanity stands before party leanings.
“Everyone was taken aback by the horrible death of Mrs Salome Acheju Abuh. Nobody deserves to die in such a horrible manner, we and the entire Nigerian women are with you to make sure justice is served.

“No one should be killed in the name of democracy, we can’t believe Nigeria has deteriorated to this state, it is extremely unacceptable.

“I can’t imagine the pains she went through in her last moment, calling for help until her voice was not heard, we are calling on the government to give justice to Mrs. Salome”, she said.
Speaking, the husband of the deceased, Elder Simeon Babani Seidu Abuh described his wife death as painful and traumatic adding that the worst has happened to the family, as family light has been put off.

Giving the account of his wife’s death, Elder Abuh said, “it all started on Saturday 16th of November 2019, at the Ochadamu primary school polling unit, one Ocholi Edicha in the company of other boys told me that he was going to deal with my younger brother, Gowon Abuh, who is a strong supporter of the PDP, he told us he and others were in the payroll of GYB 4+4. Ocholi Edicha further said that this election is for the APC and there is nothing that anyone can do about it. I politely told him that there was no need for this that we are all brothers, we all drank the same flowing river, went to the same playing ground in the community and we shall still remain in the same community, after politics.

“After casting my vote, I headed home, leaving my wife behind to watch the electoral process as a party leader.

“At about 30 minutes I left, my brother Gowon ran back home to inform me that Ocholi Edicha was beating my wife where she was sitting under a shade observing the process and when he and other people tried to intervene, Ocholi Edicha attempted to stab him (Gowon Abuh) and he had to run back home. As we were still talking one Elder Samuel Salami Agbali brought my wife on his motorcycle to our compound and advised that we rush her to hospital. I took her to Holy Memorial Hospital Ochadamu where she was attended to by one Dr. Agama. She was examined and was given some drugs to take and advised to rest due to the trauma of the attack.

“After the election I returned to Abuja where I reside leaving her behind to rest for few days as advised by the doctor. I was constantly on phone with her. On Monday 18th of November at about 12am my younger brother from Lokoja, Pst. Mark Abuh, called me that there was trouble at home. That Ocholi Edicha and others where in a drinking joint close to our house boasting on how they were going to deal with Gowon our younger brother who narrowly escaped from their attack on Saturday.

“According to his report Solomon, Gowon’s Son, overheard their boasting and pleaded with them on his father’s behalf to forget about the incidence. At this point one of them, Zekeri Awalu picked up a bottle and started pursing Solomon, while pursing Solomon he tripped and fell on his own knife which was stocked around his waist and unfortunately injured himself on the thigh while Solomon ran home to inform his father (Gowon Abuh) of what had ensued, Zekeri Awalu was rushed to Holy Memorial Hospital at Ochadamu.

“After the conversation with my brother, Pastor Mark Abuh, I immediately put a call home to Ojonugwa Alhassan, my cousin, who told me he was at the hospital where the injured person was being attended to. According to him, the hospital, after administering first aid treatment was requesting for a police report before further treatment. While the doctors were waiting for the police report the friends of the injured got agitated and moved him to another hospital where he lost his life.

“When the news of his death filtered into the town, angry APC Supporters came to the town chanting GYB 4+4, and shooting sporadically. People scampered for their lives and the APC Supporters headed to my house where my wife was resting unaware of what was happening in the community, the supporters surrounded my house shooting sporadically and further set the house ablaze and burnt my wife to death and completely burnt down the four buildings in my compound and the houses of other neighbours who are known PDP stakeholders.

“This is our story, Solomon didn’t stab anybody, and my wife was gruesomely murdered for no crime”, he said.

Elder Abuh further disclosed that the arrest made so far was in connection to armed robbery activities which the boys were involved in two days after the murder of his wife which he said the boys confessed to have murdered Mrs Salome upon interrogation at the police station.

He called on the government to give justice to his late wife and and provide enabling environment for him to bury her peacefully.

Also speaking, the younger sister of the decease, Mrs Charity Onuche called on the government to give justice to her sister, describing her late sister as the only star of the family who has been taken care of their aged mother.
Speaking on behalf of her siblings, the last daughter of the family, Ojamalia Abuh said all they are asking for is justice for their mother.

“I want the international organizations, and all women activists in Nigeria to stand up and fight for us to get justice. This injustice must not be swept under the carpet, my mother was a good woman, she was peaceful and did no wrong to deserve the way she was murdered,” she said.

It is high time we start boycotting the so called elections under APC led administration.
PoliticsKogi West Senate Rerun: PDP Rejects Nov 30 Supplementary Poll by Emedu(op): 10:42pm On Nov 23, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has indicated interest to boycott the November 30, supplementary election for Kogi West rerun poll.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Saturday, indicated that the party may not be participating in the supplementary poll for the senatorial axis.

The PDP spokesman specifically mentioned that the party has not only lost interest in the electoral umpire, but also rejected the scheduled supplementary election; an indication they might not participate in it.

The statement read in part: “After a further review of the November 16 elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes that it is now clearer to Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) do not want democracy to thrive in Nigeria.

“The PDP and Nigerians in general have forcefully rejected the results bandied by INEC in the elections. We also reject the proposed Kogi West Senatorial rerun election, which has already been desecrated by the manipulations in the main election.

“As long as the figures in the main election are fundamentally flawed, the proposed rerun cannot reflect the wishes of the electorate and Nigerians are wondering if it will make any sense to participate in an electoral process that is already deficient.

“Nigerians across board have completely lost faith in the nation’s electoral process given that Independent National Electoral Commission under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has been annexed and cannot conduct any free, fair and credible election.

“For us in the PDP and, we believe, to majority of Nigerians as well, Professor Yakubu is the worst electoral umpire in the political history of our nation.

“Furthermore, the police and the military high commands have been reduced to tools of election brutality to ensure that votes do not count.

“Even the Police high command has openly admitted that the police is incapable of protecting voters and votes; thus validating the reported involvement of security agents in the brutalization of voters and disruption of electoral process.

“More distressing is the fact that Nigerians, particularly our members and supporters in Kogi and Bayelsa states, are still in trauma over the murderous November 16 elections.

“A lot of our people have been killed and our members are still grieving.“It is public knowledge that all accredited local and international observers, including the Civil Society Situation Room, have declared that the elections did not meet the minimum standard for credible election and have unanimously called for outright cancellation.

“There is indeed nothing to indicate that more people will not be massacred in the proposed Kogi West Senatorial re-run election. It is therefore doubtful if Nigerians will be prepared to participate in that re-run given their sordid experiences in the last election.

“There is already a growing consensus across the nation that participating in elections by INEC as presently constituted under the Buhari Presidency would amount to helping to legitimize illegitimacies and outright criminalities.

“Indeed, Nigerians are not ready to join in whitewashing INEC’s battered image as such would also amount to putting a lipstick on a pig.

“Moreover, there are reports in the public space that the APC-controlled Federal Government does not want Senator Dino Malaye in the Senate just because of his forthrightness in defending the interest of the people.

“Nigerians recall with shock how, at the presentation of the 2020 budget, Mr. President reportedly asked Senator Malaye “you, you mean you are still in this chamber?. A question which meaning cannot be farfetched.

“Our party has been made aware of how INEC and security apparatus have been instructed to use all means to stop Senator Dino from returning to the Senate. INEC had also blatantly refused to consider Senator Melaye’s petitions regarding the November 16 election.

“Nevertheless, the PDP remains strong and undeterred. Our party is aware of that fact that millions of Nigerians look unto our platform for strength and direction in their quest for freedom and preservation of their rights. For this, we will remain resilient till the end.

“This country belongs to all of us and nobody, no matter how highly placed, has the right to appropriate our common sovereignty for his or her anti-people purpose.

“However, as we forge on in this collective struggle, the PDP directs all flags at our national, state and local government secretariats to fly at half mast from Monday, November 25th to Wednesday, November 27th in honour of all those killed in Bayelsa and Kogi states by the APC and their thuggish collaborators.”
