Since this fluid is needed to pressurize the system and lubricate the pump, you have a steering wheel that turns the harder the less power steering fluid is in the system. The car may be able to drive, but if you do not fix the leak, your power steering pump may fail, which can be a costly replacement.

The heavier the vehicle, the harder it is to turn the wheels. Before replacing the power steering pump, make sure that the pump plug does not become detached or damaged.

Like other fluids in your car, the power steering fluid can become thick over time. If you do not change the power steering fluid as recommended by the car manufacturer, it may become too thick to lubricate the system.
