@negative commentaries on oceanic

I think people who havent worked with any bank should not castigate such banks, i once worked with oceanic bank and i know as a matter of fact that my peers could not match me salary for salary or exposure/experience for exposure/experience.
It had very simple procedural welfare benefits and when i resigned, i got close to half a million naira from my Staff savings scheme, don't know a few banks that do that, remember, these were deductions from our salary, and with these deductions my salary was competitive and i was having cash flows in my account at least every two weeks, quarterly, semi-annually-----beat that.

Oceanic never had differential pay (unless offcourse maybe at top management level) until i resigned just before my study leave expired last year.

Oceanic bank occassionally had IT problems, but was transparent with its fees and charges.

It was also a retail bank that also focussed on grassroots, this allowed banking halls to be jam packed (maybe negative).

As per quality of staff, every bank has got below average to super stars, so did oceanic, and for everyone who has had a bad experience with oceanic, there are 23 other guys who have had same situation with all other banks.

I have info on salary structure in almost all major banks with payslip and bank statements as proof, alot of guys just post salary scales of various banks without facts and i laugh alot.

i share in your view my dear babaogu but then the reality is that most banks promote their staffs based on perfomance based on what you bring for them for instance if you bring in more money surpassing your targets you are called "eshin" which means great one and I know in the case of oceanic if you bring in more dough Mama Cecelia may decide to open a branch for you

its all good

yes it was cool one guy who owns naijacities.com got 10 million naira but the dragons awosika, john momoh and alex took 75 % of the business well from my own observation they did a coup there, he developed the programme and he initiated the whole tin only for the dragons to take so much from him from my own understanding the dragons can wake up one morning and shove him off

its rather a success for him but in the tale end its a failure in investment I wise odd decision u might put it

TPIA, i assume you live abroad and do not know much about nigeria. let me tell the story. many years ago 65 years, the yorubas wanted to have their own country. we had our flag and others. in 1957 we form our own govt, that is when britain allow us to do that. Many are dead without seen that dream come to past. Britain locked up our people and detroy many lifes. That is why the nigeria census is the way it is.

It is a story of a people who till today want their own country out of Nigeria. Awo once said "Nigeria is a geographical expression" Nigeria is not a country like most country. It is a country with no real culture or languages, little history. It is not like germany , japan, and other. It is what Nigerian call parch parch of many country. that why we are confused. Even till today. most of the people do not want to be or remain in nigeria. they want out of the federation.

whats your point
to you want another country or what

@emekauzor
i like the breakdown of your analysis on the banking sector,u must have put in some xtra effort to gather such info, although u dint get everything on point but your close in terms of figures, now i want u to correct this line,

In terms of pay, the Oil boys may be ahead initially they will always be ahead but the problem is that they hardly get promoted unlike a banker that can become a BM within 4-5years whereas your friend in the oil sector is just about getting his 1st promotion and a time is coming when money might not be important again but positions. that is why you see people introducing themselves as Head of this and that while your friend in the oil industry is still saying yes sir to the same Oga he has been saying it to for 5 years., don't even go there, what are the bases of promotions in the banking sector?the fastest pople to rise in the sector are those that hit their financial targets and not those that have the capacity to run the operations of the bank.u really can't compare these cadre of people in the oil sector because u wouldnt believe the training they undergo, locally and internationally.the entry level of the banking sector is not streamlined to the courses the staff obtained and due to the strict targets hung on them with little or no time, they find it very hard to upgrade themselves and also due to the poor iniciatives of the managment of most of these banks they wouldnt even send these people for courses to upgrade them,u end up seeing that 5yrs later, what u started with is what u still have when u friends in the oil sector have Msc,ACA,, PHD, other degreez that would position them for anther offer in thesame sector that would still pay better than your BM.

Truly speaking, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be self employed.

I have read about bankers and I just can not help laughing at times. Banking is not all about marketing and begging for money. There are other technical depts. --- financial control, treasury, credit admin etc.
im not really comparing the oil and banking sector because the oil sector still rules okay grinYou never know how far until you're in the system, yes your very right grin

much as you disagree with some issues I would also disagree with what you think, but the bottom line is banking basically is marketing you need money to boost your banking operations well not everyone will be at the field.

ehie007:

let me tell you guys about Fidelity Bank
Fidelity Bank has so many entry levels,
BT1- N1m per Annum (graduates that come out with 2.2 with no experience)
BT2- N1.3m oer annum (graduates that come out with 2.2 with a few months experience) or how you bargain your way in or who brought you in.)
EAT- N1.5 (graduates with 2.1 or HND (distinction)
EA- 2.3 (depends , may be for people that went to private school and have a 2.1)
ET- 2.7-2.9 (who brought you in or fresher with foreign university degree with no masters)

Fidelty Bank is one bank that discriminates a lot, they are so much concerned about class of degree and private and government universities,
they don't have a detailed structured recruitment process.

wont advice any fresher with 2.2 to apply to Fidelity, because you willl get frustrated, when you see your mates in other banks are 4 step above you.

if you have experience with other banks, fidelity will be a good place for a switch over.

well not much to say but every bank has its way of rating so let's leave it at that but in any case fidelity is a good bank

Oceanic has poached many of our staff but they are really experiencing peace. I intereviewed a guy who wanted to join my team from Oceanic and was surprised of the pay he presented on an AM grade because what my guys earn as AM is much higher than that. I learnt from him that there are bands for some grades.

Never forget the fact that even on the same grade in most of these banks, people get different pay. I am one example. I earn more than 90% of my colleagues on the same grade because of an important strategic factor. So, these things are relative and depends on whom, what, why and where wink

well what else can i say

This information/news is being passed around. Now, its your turn to have it.  Enjoy reading.  Guys, Just read this up:

At times when u guys pass comments on bank's pay, u tend to make me laugh.
I am working in one of the banks, my bank is not in the top five yet but in the top ten.
Do not be deceived with all those paper pays and apart from that, HR policies of each of the banks differs

If you say Bank PHB is the highest paying you make me laugh. See they will just tell u the good part of it, they are leaving out the negatives.
Do you know that in the same Bank PHB, you only earn the percentage of the branch target that was met for that month? If you branch makes 75% in target and profitability, then you are going to earn 75% of your salary, be it business developers (marketers) or support guys (operations).

Entry level for 1ST BANK is 104k and it is a less stressful place to work. this is because they have cheap funds ---- monies of our great grandfathers who are dead & we are not even aware of (ie monies of the deads). The amalgamation of this funds over the decade makes 1st bank a big bank, thereby putting less stress on their biz developers. they are really being proactive and dynamic nowadays.

As for INTERCONTINENTAL BANK, nice pay but unsecured work. Don't be surprised if you get to work tomorrow morning and find that your colleague is under suspension for what could be treated as minor issues in other places. Sincerely, I don't know how their staff still manage to put up a SMILE despite the uncertainties that surrounds them.

Zenith pay is quite small at entry level but they usually promote across board unlike other places where promotion is based on performance. Zenith promotes you for your effort and also promotes at times for you to be geared to be like top performers though you're not performing very well. if you really want to learn the ethics and basics of banking, it is not the best place to start for a marketer because you will not know more than how to generate deposit. The other aspects of banking ie risk assets generation (credit packaging) will be virtually nil. It is a nice place to be with good and strong corporate image. They have a sound IT in place and their staff are proud of their Bank.

GT Bank is a very classy place to work. My problem with them, they have quite a sizeable number of contract staff as support. Their PS is cool too and your promotion is rest assured. Their staff are very distinct. Their staff are very proud of their bank too.

OCEANIC pays well too. It is roughly 90k at the beginning for 6months, before you are upgraded from PIT to AO and you start earning up to 156k in a month. I heard they also pay 87k as quarterly pay for entry level.
It is a bank that needs to pay more attention to the quality of staff they recruit, as well as their IT. More often than not, they are always having FINACLE DOWN TIME. At times the quality of staff recruited is a reflection of the organization. I tend to wonder if some of them tipped HR to be employed or maybe the people that are recruiting are recruiting people like them.

FCMB is a place I will rather advise entry level guys to start from because they will learn more within a short period of time. After acquiring the knowledge here, the sky is not even the limit again. Entry level is 160k per month before confirmation. Immediately you are confirmed, your monthly pay drops to 87k but the remaining part is paid as quarterly pay every three months. This is usually up to 220k. You also have access to 80k line of medical services. They have a superb IT  facility and their staff are highly knowledgeable. My problem with FCMB is their staff. They are usually not proud of their workplace and they have every cause to be though they have NICE T-SHIRT, ADVERT, PRODUCT, building. I love their lapel pin.

STANBIC IBTC is a lovely place to work too. entry level is up to 150k. It is another place I will recommend to starters to begin from because they will learn a lot from here. Their staff are cool.

Skye Bank -- entry level is 130k (not too sure). I heard they have a lot of contract staff too. I had an unpleasant experience wit some of their marketers last week and I promised myself if those are the caliber of people working in Skye, I will never work for them. They have a very good advert that won them into the hearts of Nigerians. I thought they dropped their standard wit that NEW HAKUNA MATATA ADVERT. They also need to improve their IT.

ACCESS BANK place a lot of emphasis on the quality they recruit. Though they have contract staff too, they all look well paid. Entry level is up to 120k. So I heard o.

ETB -- heard they pay well, but it is a one-man business that is not quoted on the stock market floor.

I don't know much about the following. ------ Fidelity, Eco, Unity, First Inland, Union

Be that as it may, banking sector is still one of the best place to work. It makes you couth and respected. You also meet people you would never have dreamt of meeting. In terms of pay, the Oil boys may be ahead initially but the problem is that they hardly get promoted unlike a banker that can become a BM within 4-5years whereas your friend in the oil sector is just about getting his 1st promotion and a time is coming when money might not be important again but positions. that is why you see people introducing themselves as Head of this and that while your friend in the oil industry is still saying yes sir to the same Oga he has been saying it to for 5 years.

Truly speaking, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be self employed.

I have read about bankers and I just can not help laughing at times. Banking is not all about marketing and begging for money. There are other technical depts. --- financial control, treasury, credit admin etc.
