Lawmaker Protests Leaking Roof At Nigeria's National Assembly Complex Speaking during the plenary session on Wednesday, Elumelu said the situation is dangerous to lawmakers’ safety. The minority leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, has raised a point of order during the plenary on Wednesday protesting the leaking roof of the National Assembly complex. Speaking during the plenary session on Wednesday, Elumelu said the situation is dangerous to lawmakers’ safety, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. He highlighted the dangers inherent in coming to plenary to make laws under a leaking roof. ”Our chamber is leaking. While coming into the chamber this morning, we noticed the cleaner making a frantic effort to scoop the water. “This is dangerous to our day to day lawmaking, we cannot be representing our people and speaking for them under a leaking roof,” he said. The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, said Elumelu’s point of order was noted, saying, “this is very important to us.” Leaks from the roof of the national assembly building had before now disrupted plenary sessions. The incident which followed a downpour occurred at the ‘White House’, the portion of the parliament building housing both upper and lower legislative chambers. Many lawmakers were stranded for some minutes before the rain subsided. The lobby of the national monument became impassable while cleaners were immediately mobilised to clear the pool of water. In June, the National Assembly leadership had come under attack following an embarrassing viral video showing flooded chambers, lobby, and offices being mopped up by cleaners following a downpour. The situation forced senators to abruptly suspend sitting. The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) later came out to explain why it cannot immediately fix the National Assembly Complex's leaking roof or do a total rehabilitation of the complex. It said the contract for the project is currently undergoing procurement processes. A few weeks later, the foyer of the White House segment of the complex was flooded after a heavy downpour. The National Assembly structure which was built about three decades ago had its lobby turned to a fishing pond during the heavy downpour. http://saharareporters.com/2021/09/22/lawmaker-protests-leaking-roof-nigerias-national-assembly-complex

Bandits Outnumber Nigerian Army, Police Personnel In North-West – Katsina Governor, Masari On the ongoing military operations, Masari said the bandits had become under immense pressure and were trying to infiltrate into the communities. The Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, says bandits in the North-West region outnumber the security personnel in the zone. He also accused the military and the police of not giving the vigilantes the necessary support. Masari spoke in Katsina Tuesday when he received the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, who visited the state to get firsthand information on the successes recorded in the ongoing operations against banditry. He said all the northern state governors intended to employ 3,000 trained vigilantes, “with the help of police, to arm them, but from the report I’m receiving from the current operations in Katsina State, the needed support is not given to the vigilantes.” He said, “Let me digress a bit to address the military and the police. We’re trying to bring in vigilantes, trained by them, but they’re not giving them the necessary support. “We have a situation in which these bandits are outnumbering the security forces, when you have volunteer forces that you’ve trained, that are willing to assist you, but the support and response by the military and the police are not encouraging. “Now, we’re recruiting additional 500 and the emirate council is recruiting 250, if they don’t have the conducive atmosphere to operate side by side with the military and the police, how can we succeed?” Masari said the security measures taken against banditry by northwest governors and their counterparts from Nasarawa and Niger states had started yielding positive results, “especially the suspension of GSM services, because the informants that invited bandits for kidnap or inform bandits to ambush military or police officers had been cut off. “And also the demand for ransom normally through the GSM has drastically reduced. The banning of sales of petroleum products, along the border local governments in particular, except to designated filling stations which are allowed to sell a maximum of N5,000 to vehicles and to only operate in the day time. “So, Honourable Minister, yes, we’ve closed markets, especially the selling of animals, banning of sales of second hand motorcycles in particular to some markets, and I think we’ll move further to all the markets in the state because we understand that it’s one source they use to buy motorcycles for their banditry and other insurgency activities,” he said. On the ongoing military operations, Masari said the bandits had become under immense pressure and were trying to infiltrate into the communities. He urged the federal government to take the fight to the bandits without any fear of collateral damages. The governor, however, said there was the need to make the right calculation to minimise the damage. On his part, the minister said banditry was not created by the present administration, hence negotiating with “people who do not share in positive values would not be tolerated.” http://saharareporters.com/2021/09/22/bandits-outnumber-nigerian-army-police-personnel-north-west-%E2%80%93-katsina-governor-masari

Northerners Can Have President Of Only Northern Nigeria In 2023 – Ohanaeze Women Reply Northern Elders Forum Adimachukwu said the “era of arrogant disposition by those so called Northern leaders who claim to speak for the North is now a defunct story.” The Ohanaeze Igbo Women Organisation has berated the Northern Elders Forum over its statement that the region would take advantage of its population to retain political power beyond 2023. The NEF Spokesperson, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, at an event at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on Saturday said the North won’t relinquish power in 2023 because it has the numbers to win any election. Ohanaeze women in a statement signed by its President, Chief Hon. (Mrs) Calista N. Adimachukwu, faulted Baba-Ahmed’s comments. Adimachukwu said the “era of arrogant disposition by those so called Northern leaders who claim to speak for the North is now a defunct story.” She added, “The recent statements by the Northern Elder's Forum spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, while speaking at the maiden Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series organised by the students’ wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he stated that anyone who doesn’t want a Northerner as President in 2023 can leave the country when it happens. “For avoidance of doubt, my reply to him on the 7th of July 2021 when the Southern Governors issued a communique on their meeting which was held on the 5th of July 2021, that the president of Nigeria should go to the South in 2023. I stated clearly then that the North cannot produce Nigerian President without the support of the South according to the Nigerian constitution. “But since the North is very determined to lord over the Southern Nigeria perpetually, then they can prepare their votes and vote a President of Northern Nigeria and not a President of the entire Nigeria. I think that will settle the arrogance of the Northern Elder's Forum. “At least there won't be any further need after 2023 for the Northern Elder's Forum to be making provocative statements on issues bothering on the Presidency of Nigeria. My response to Hakeem Baba-Ahmed on the 7th of July 2021 settled the matter. The era of arrogant disposition by those so called Northern leaders who claim to speak for the North is now a defunct story. A word is enough for the wise. “The Ohanaeze Igbo Women Organisation Worldwide wishes to reiterate that we stand by the decision and stance of the Southern Governor's Forum that the 2023 Presidency belongs to the South. http://saharareporters.com/2021/09/21/northerners-can-have-president-only-northern-nigeria-2023-%E2%80%93-ohanaeze-women-reply-northern
