…to start distribution today

Following an agreement reached by representatives of oil marketers and the Senate Committee set-up to look into the lingering fuel scarcity, it has been resolved that oil marketers resumed full lifting and distribution of fuel across the country.
All the main unions and industrial groups who are collectively responsible for supplying and distributing the majority of petrol and diesel in Nigeria agreed to commence lifting of products from all available depots within the next six hours.

According to the Executive Secretary of Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, Babafemi Olawore and Kassim Bataiya of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) said they “fully endorsed” the statement.
Similarly, Senator Magnus Abe, the Chairman of the Committee who read a communique signed by the stakeholders after the session, explained that the Finance Minister/Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and other stakeholders, who attended the meeting, unanimously agreed to the peace deal, in the interest of the nation.

Politics / NDLEA Chides Kashamu, Stop Throwing Tantrum by Emmalexing: 11:21am On May 26, 2015
As preparation intensifies for Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu to appear before the Federal High Court on Monday May 25, 2015, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has asked Kashamu to stop pointing accusing fingers but be ready to face the court.

The agency also called on him to act honourably and concentrate on the facts of his case rather than dragging former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George into his personal problem.

The NDLEA said this today in a statement in Lagos by the Head, Public Affairs, Ofoyeju Mitchell.

Explaining what led to the house arrest yesterday of Kashamu, Ofoyeju said, "the fact is that a formal request for his extradition had been received from the Embassy of the United States of America."

According to official report, Kashamu has been on the wanted list of both the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Politics / US Lobbies Buhari On Petroleum Minister by Emmalexing: 12:45pm On May 25, 2015
SINCE Buhari's victory at the polls several countries have shown a renewed interest in Nigeria and have moved to improve ties with the incoming administration.
The US had expressed concern over series of issues. One issue relates to the massive human rights abuses by the Nigerian military in its prosecution of the war in the North-east. The second issue the US has expressed concern about is the manner top officials of the Nigerian Government have managed the Oil and Gas sector of the economy, citing several acts that bothered on corruption.

A source in the foreign ministry said the US is now eager to turn the situation around, as it has always considered Nigeria an important ally on the African continent. Several highly placed persons and multinational companies who attended a US State Department briefing cited corruption as the main reason for low investment in Nigeria's oil sector. It is understood that the US is backing a senior official of a multi-national oil company from Delta State who is conversant with transparency rules to emerge as the Petroleum Minister.

Crime / Experts Calls For Better Intelligence Unit by Emmalexing: 1:28pm On May 22, 2015
Nigerians especially from the Security sector of the economy have urged the acting Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to re-organize the intelligence unit of the force with a view to checkmate the excesses of Fulani herdsmen and other militants who had been snuffing life of innocent Nigerians for the past 10 years.

One of those who spoke to National Daily, Mr. Folorunsho Atta a security consultant, said it is good now with the appointment of Solomon Arase as the new police boss because he has vast experience in intelligence gathering. According to him with a good intelligence unit the issue of herdsmen unleashing

terror in parts of the country will come to an end.

Another expert Mr. Donald Obi also shares the same idea. He pointed out that in every country a good and functioning intelligence unit is very critical in checkmating any form of terrorism hence if that could be put in place it will go a long way to stop the Fulani herdsmen from carrying out their nefarious activities.

Politics / Beware Of Sycophants, Cardinal Okogie Tells Buhari by Emmalexing: 12:10pm On May 22, 2015
The Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Cardinal Olubunmi Anthony Okogie, on Wednesday urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to beware of sycophants ahead of his assumption of office on May 29.

Okogie in a statement in Lagos urged Mr. Buhari to be wary of "wolves in sheep clothing" and all the political jobbers who jumped ship to identify with the winning party.

"Now that the euphoria of electoral victory is over and with some days to the handover ceremony, the president-elect should get to work and hit the ground running without further delay.

"He does not have the luxury of time. He should not be distracted by the litany of requests, demands, recommendations, unrealistic expectations, and open letters at his table and in the media.

"He should also be mindful of the promises and commitments he makes as he receives delegations from different states, various bodies and interest groups.

Politics / N19.2bn Fraud: Sylva’s Case Adjourns Till May 27 by Emmalexing: 12:04pm On May 22, 2015
The case involving the former Governor of Bayelsa State , Timipre Sylva, being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) before Justice A. Y Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has been adjourned till May 27, 2015.

Sylva along with Francis Okokwo, Gbenga Balogun, and Samuel Ogbuku, allegedly used three companies – Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited, and Haloween-Blue Construction and Logistics Limited to move about N19.2 billion from Bayelsa State coffers between 2009 and 2012, under false pretence of using the withdrawn money to augment salaries of the state government workers.

It was gathered that since the matter began in 2013, several applications filed by the defence, have made it difficult for Sylva to be arraigned.

However, at the last sitting on May 14, 2015, Justice Mohammed had in his ruling dismissed an application brought before it by the third accused, Gbenga Balogun, through his counsel Israel Olorundare, (SAN) praying the court to first determine the legal standing of the lead prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, (SAN), to handle the matter, as well as a motion challenging the competence of the 42-count charge.

Politics / How Northern Elements Campaign For Gbajabiamila Speakership by Emmalexing: 11:58am On May 22, 2015
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, contending for the office of the Speaker in the House of Reps, has revealed how the Emir of Kano SanusiLamido, Kaduna’s Gov.-elect Nasir ElRufai and Sen. LawanShuaibu have met APC national leader Bola Tinubu to root for him in the contest.
The minority leader made this known to a group of members-elect from the PDP in Abuja on Wednesday.
“I intend to be speaker not for anybody,” he said. “Tinubu still did not respond until when few weeks ago Nasir El-Rufai went to meet him. Then he said maybe this man has some appeal.”

According to the lawmaker, some reps from the north went to Tinubu to suggest that the minority leader be made Tambuwal’s deputy in 2011. But the APC leader didn’t support the idea.
Gbajabiamila also refuted the statement credited to him that Tinubuhad already written down the names of committees’ chairmen in the 8th House.

Politics / Blair Urges Buhari To Be Hard On NNPC, Take Tough Actions by Emmalexing: 5:51pm On May 21, 2015
UK ex-PM Tony Blair has advised President-elect Mohammed Buhari to crack the NNPC nut, remove fuel subsidy, and take other critical decisions within the first 100 days of his government, riding on the goodwill that saw him into office.
Blair, represented by Lord Mandelson, a member of the UK Labour Party, said this in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the APC Policy Dialogue on how to implement the party’s Agenda for Change. The two-day dialogue was themed Implementing Change: From Vision to Reality.

“Take advantage of that goodwill that comes with being elected to take difficult decisions that may inflict immediate pain, but in the long-term interest of the country and government,” Blair said.
According to him, there is something wrong going on in a country with such extraordinary resources of oil and amazing supply of energy, yet power generation is not happening the way it should.

Politics / Ekiti PDP Elders Kick Against Chairman's Removal, Support Faleye by Emmalexing: 5:53pm On May 20, 2015
Amidst the impeachment uproar generated in the Niger State House of Assembly, the embattled governor, BabangidaAliyu, has decided to shell out N17 million to each of the lawmakers plotting his removal.
Confirming the gift money, none of the lawmakers is ready to reveal what the handout is meant for, though many observers believe it’s some kind of hush money.
“It was not as if the governor bribed us, it is our legal entitlements and we have a right to ask for it before the expiration of our tenure,’ IsahKawu, speaker of the House, told the PUNCH. “We have been paid and calm has returned to the assembly complex.”

Besides the N17 million, other demands of the lawmakers have got favourable nod of Aliyu. The Assembly will get more basketfuls of boons before the tenure expires. In the meantime, the law makers have suspended the impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Council of Elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State have disagreed on the alleged removal of the chairman of the party in the state, Chief Idowu Faleye , by some members of the state executive council of the party, and criticised the emergence of Mr Olatunde Olatunde as a faction's Chaiman.

The elders of the party under the aegis of Ekiti State PDP Elders' Forum, who rebbuffed the development in a statement at the weekend, disagreed with the purported removal of Faleye, describing it as "null and void"

They said in the statement signed by a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of PDP , Chief Clement Awoyelu, that it was "absolutely wrong and unexpected" of Olatunde to have declared himself chairman after a meeting held with the aggrieved members, where it was resolved that the matter would be resolved amicably.

Politics / Amidst Naira Rain, Niger’s Lawmakers Back Off Impeachment Move by Emmalexing: 5:05pm On May 20, 2015
Amidst the impeachment uproar generated in the Niger State House of Assembly, the embattled governor, BabangidaAliyu, has decided to shell out N17 million to each of the lawmakers plotting his removal.

Gov. Aliyu had got a court judgement halting the lawmakers’ move to impeach him last week, after dispatching the men of the state police command to bar the newly elected House members from getting to the Assembly complex.
The lawmakers sacked the leadership (who are pro-Aliyu of the assembly a week ago. The reasons arose from a string of allegations comprising non-implementation of House resolutions, poor welfare and non-release of the statutory allocation to the Assembly for months.

The speaker, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone said, “I cannot speak on this issue on the telephone or anywhere on the matter.”
But one of the lawmakers confirmed this to our correspondent.
He said, “It was not as if the governor bribed us, it is our legal entitlements and we have a right to ask for it before the expiration of our tenure. We have been paid and calm has returned to the assembly complex.”
Asked whether it was true that the lawmakers had dropped the impeachment plot against the governor, the lawmaker said, “there is no need for it again.”

Politics / Kalu Slams PDP For Rigging In S/east, Says He Planned APC With Tinubu by Emmalexing: 4:52pm On May 20, 2015
Abia’s former Gov. Orji Kalu has claimed that the PDP didn’t win the whole of the southeast, but only rigged to win what its candidates got in the entire region. He also claimed he and APC’s leader Bola Tinubu first conceived the idea of a merger.
“What happened in my constituency was a rigged election. Apart from Enugu and Ebonyi states, where the PDP had very good outings, every other state they won in the South-East was rigged,’ Kalu said during the “View from the Top” programme Tuesday.
Kalu contested for a senate seat, and lost on the platform of the PPA in the March 28 National Assembly election.
He may have decided to voice this out going by the general belief that the southeast deserve to be marginalized in the in-coming APC government because the region deliberately pitched its tenth with the PDP.

Politics / Zoning Is Oyegun’s, Pdp’s Idea, Says Akande by Emmalexing: 4:47pm On May 20, 2015
Bisi Akande, former interim chairman of the APC, has revealed the party’s stand is not in sync with zoning of political offices, a decision that has been generating uproars since the conclusion of the 2015 general election.
The mega party is seen as foisting certain ranking lawmakers on the National Assembly.
“It is true that sometime after the election, the National Chairman (Chief John Oyegun) wanted to toy with the idea of zoning. But as a united party, we unanimously said, ‘No,’” he told reporters before a meeting at the Protea Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos According to him, zoning of political offices has never been the position of the APC.

“It is a PDP arrangement and we will not practice it. What you see with the Senate presidency is us trying to ensure there is no rancour amongst the senators. Of course, we want the best man to emerge and that is what will happen,” he said.
Akande believes that zoning could spawn confusion in the APC, and the PDP could take advantage of such to take certain positions in the National Assembly.
“We have been sacrificing and compromising in the interest of our nation and that is what we must continue to do,” he said.
