Senator representing Bayelsa East and philanthropist Mr. Ben Murray Bruce of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has contacted the Emir of Kano and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to demand the immediate release of 14-year-old Ese Oruru, who was in August 2015, allegedly abducted in Opolo, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, by one Yunusa, who hails from Kano. Sen. Bruce Sen. Bruce “I just got off the phone with the Emir of Kano. He has exonerated himself and has provided documental evidence to this effect on Ese’s case. However, I will not relent until Ese is freed and released back to her parents,” he posted on his Twitter handle. The Senator, who arrived the country, in the early hours of today, made the move after he was briefed of the abduction of Ese. He also berated the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, for failing to rescue Ese from her abductor. “I have been on an international flight without Internet and just landed at MMA only to be briefed on the abduction of Ese”. “After being briefed I have consulted to establish the facts of the matter. Having done so, I make the following statement”. “IGP Arase, Ese is a minor and cant consent to marry. The CONSTITUTION is clear. Your duty is to ensure her release to her parents”. “The CONSTITUTION of Nigeria respects no person. To pick and choose on whom it should apply is UNCONSTITUTIONAL”. “Your statement that Ese’s release is “dependent” on persons is sad. Her release is GUARANTEED by the CONSTITUTION. Ensure you free Ese” Ese Ese “If you refuse to enforce the Nigerian CONSTITUTION this matter will be escalated to The United Nations Commission on Human Rights”. “The IGP is in a pole position to show that there are no sacred cows in Nigeria and everyone is equal before the law”. Vanguard gathered that Ese, who was 13 as at the time of her alleged abduction, was taken to Kano, by Yunusa, where he converted her to Islam and married her. Ese’s parents had since last August made trips to Kano, where they unraveled the plights of their daughter. The parents said they have involved the police, but efforts to get the Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, at whose palace the girl is believed to be held to resolve the matter and ensure the return of the 14-year-old to them have proved futile. While her mother was told that Ese had converted to Islam and, therefore, was no longer her daughter, her father was told that his daughter was an 18-year-old adult and not 14, hence she was capable of making decisions for herself. Signs that President Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Qatar may started yielding positivity result manifested yesterday as Qatari businessmen have indicated interest to invest in financial, oil and gas and telecommunication sectors in Nigeria’s economy. Other areas the business community showed concerned were telecommunications, tourism, agriculture, food processing sectors, among others. This came as president Buhari has assured them of security and protection, adding that all visa impediment, multiple taxation would be removed. Speaking on behalf of the Qatari senior executive of Qatar Chamber of Commerce and some private businessmen at a meeting with president Buhari in Doha on Sunday, Muhammed Bin Ahmed Bin Towar Al Kuwari, Vice Chairman of Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Africa was a new destination for the next decade. “All eyes are on Africa in the next decade. Africa is the next place for growth, the rest of the world is looking towards the continent, and Nigeria is an important part of that continent,” he said. President Buhari had assured the people of adequate security in Nigeria. He said “Nobody invests without first knowing how secure a country is. That is why we have placed high premium on securing the country, because you cannot effectively manage a country you have not secured. “My party campaigned on three main planks: security, employment generation and anti-corruption. “We campaigned on zero corruption, promising that we would run an accountable government and we are keeping our promises.” A statement by Mr. Femi Adesina, the presidential media aide stated that president Buhari while speaking on the crash crude oil prices in the international market and its effect on the Nigerian economy, informed his hosts that Nigeria was blessed with vast arable land for agriculture, and rich deposit of solid minerals, which the businessmen can invest in, and reap rich returns in a short while. “Agriculture and solid minerals will mobilize youths for gainful employment. We have the capacity not to need to import food at all. “But we need to also tackle infrastructure deficit in power, transportation, rail, road, and in other areas. We will put together an articulated plan, which would be discussed with you shortly, so that you can make investment decisions. “All impediments like delayed processing of permits, multiple taxation, and corrupt practices, would be removed,’’ the President said. Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency’s, NIMASA’s Assistant Director, Financial Services Department, Mrs Olamide Odusanya, yesterday, told a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, that a former Director-General of the agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, approved the transfer of over N1billion into one of the accounts opened by the agency without the approval of the Accountant-General of the Federation. Mrs. Odusanya, who testified before Justice Ibrahim Buba in the trial of Akpobolokemi, said that the accounts were opened for the use of the International Ship and Port Facility Security, ISPS committee, chaired by NIMASA’s former Executive Director, Maritime Safety and Shipping Development, Captain Ezekiel Agaba. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is prosecuting the accused persons over allegation of converting N2.658 bn between December 23, 2013 and May 28 last year, to which they pleaded not guilty. Led in evidence by prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, Mrs Odusanya said, that while the Accountant-General’s permission was obtained before NIMASA’s revenue and operational accounts were, no such permission was sought or obtained for ISPS’ four accounts. According to her, on June 3, 2013, N60.8 million was credited to the committee’s account with Access Bank and on January 3, 2014, N1.125 billion was transferred to the account based on Akpobolokemi’s approval. She said N795.2 million was transferred to ISPS’ Zenith Bank account on August 29, 2014 and last May 20, it was credited with N447,000,000, adding that ”The approval to credit the ISPS account was given by the Director-General.” According to her, “Before money is transferred to ISPS accounts, approval is first obtained from the Presidency through the NSA. Once the approval comes, the Chief Executive Officer (Akpobolokemi) will ask the Chairman (Agaba) to minute to the Financial Director to process payment. “A memo will be written by the chairman to be sent to the Director of Financial Services who will issue transfer instruction to the bank,” she said. On one of the payment instructions to the bank tendered before the court, she confirmed that Akpobolokemi wrote: “Approved. Please comply.” According to her, money cannot leave NIMASA without Akpobolokemi’s authorisation, being the “chief accounting officer.” Two Bureau De Change operators Yahaya Mohammed and Wakili Daudu, who run Kofa Fada Nigeria Limited, had earlier testified that Agaba gave them cash to covert to dollars for him. Justice Buba adjourned until March 1 for continuation of trial. Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/ex-nimasa-boss-transferred-n1bn-without-approval-witness/ |
