I will never forget the 5th pic of the stadium in main camp. I was a fresher then and had just completed my registration and was chilling in the stands watching a practice match for "Malabo World Cup," When a cool dude came up to me and said, "fresh man," and smiled at me. We had an easy conversation about my course and I asked him stuff about the school.

We said our goodbyes and he went his way, three minutes later I heard gun shots and saw people scampering from the scene for safety, I took off as well, praying not to be caught in the crossfire or get hit by a stray bullet.

After the fiasco died down, students and the school security were gathering around something, out of curiosity, I moved in to get a closer look and behold: it was the guy I just spoke to. He was shot and had half his face sliced off. I will never forget the vacant stare of his glazed dead eyes.

That incident really defined my stay in the school and shaped the man I would become. Sad memories, but memories nonetheless. This happened around 1999 and was just adjacent of the VC office at the time.

In South Africa, the race hierarchy was created by the Apartheid government. Whites were treated better than Indians, Indians treated better than the Coloureds ("Coloured", a term also coined by the former government) & of course, blacks were at the bottom of the pile. However, for the most part, Coloureds are irrelevant in the eyes of black South Africans. Noone cares about them, TBH.

As for racism, I'm tired of people moaning about it. I often wonder what do these people say or do, when they're face to face with racism. IMO, you don't end up feeling like a victim when you stand up for yourself, as it happens.

Personally, I have had a few experiences which could qualify as racism, but I'm not holding a grudge against any race (or anyone in particular), because I speak up for myself & set the record straight, immediately. I won't let anyone be disrespectful to me, to my face. Never.

Another thing is, white people are not all horrible people. TBH, in my own life, white people are the only people who've been there for me when I needed help of any kind. They always came through. Wouldn't say the same for black people, unfortunately. IMO, black people only support each other on social media, never where it counts the most. We have a long way to go as people, because in reality, whites treat blacks with more dignity than blacks treat each other on a daily basis.

And the most painful thing is that even the educated and successful blacks like Oprah Winfrey, Condeliza Rice, Jessy Jackson, Ben Carson etc. Are doing nothing to change their people mentality.

I listened to 17 last year and "?" as soon as it its no. 1. His 17 album was a hit based on rating which rose him to fame. Its just like an unknown individual released an album then it got all the attention and rose to fame. Artist like SZA first project was far back as 3 years ago still are considered as new comer because they just got recognised on their second project. X got popular on his first outing which rose him to fame prematurely rhetorically, you know what I mean? Even Kendrick Lamar gave his best in Section 80 and still wasn't recognized, he rose to fame 2 year after when he Released gkmc which was regarded as a new comer (upcoming).

Not all artist are fortunate to make a clean break on their first project... To music critics, he's still a new comer, an upcoming artist... I'm sure if u give him a space of a year, he will become popular like a regular artist. Even Cardi B is popular than X and was still regarded as Upcoming at the last Grammy, her best is yet to come.
