WHY DO PEOPLE STEAL ? Stealing from others has always been seen as a crime- in fact in years gone by, you could be hanged, or go to prison for years for stealing as little as a fish. Why do people steal, and is punishing them always the right course of action? There are many reasons why people steal. One of the most obvious ones is in order to feed themselves or their family. I often hear people say that they would never steal, but I believe desperation and possible starvation would force many people to steal to survive. Another reason to steal is to be seen to be cool in front of your friends or just for the thrill of it. Sadly for many retailers, teenage years have several rites of passage and one of them can be the act of stealing and getting away with it. I have met people who describe how they felt elated when they stole something from a shop. Often, they were not at all interested in what they were stealing, but the thrill of getting away with it was worth it and the thought of getting one over on the establishment was motive enough. This type of behaviour is often short lived, and the teenager grows into an adult that has more respect for other people's possessions. Of course, this is not always the case! A third reason that people steal is because of deprivation. They do not know this is what is driving them, but they are unconsciously telling the world that their needs are not being met. Often these people begin to steal as children. They have experienced deprivation (usually of an emotional kind) and so they develop a sense of entitlement to money and objects outside of the house. It is a way of trying to fill the emotional gap that the parents or caregivers left, but as with other compulsive behaviours, it does not solve the problem at all. This leads them to repeat the behaviour and become more and more confident, stealing riskier and riskier items in an attempt to not feel the deprivation. The fourth category of people that steal, do it because they can. It is a lot easier to take someone else's money than have to earn your own. This can be learned behaviour or just something that is picked up along the way. Whatever the reason that you steal, our societies do not condone the behaviour. Many people learn the hard way what is like to lose everything you value to a thief. It can feel as though you have been violated, just because you know they have been going through your possessions and treasures. People often steal because they feel insecure and less than. Learning that stealing is not the way to form loving and happy relationships with the people you know and the people you steal from is part of learning respect. One rule that it always helps to keep in mind is- Can I have it? Is it mine? If the answer to those two questions is yes, then you are entitled to it. If it belongs to anyone else, you can have it if you ask them, and they agree. Learning to respect other peoples' possessions is just part of growing up. If countries and governments learned this, then the world would be a lot more harmonious! Treat others as you wish to be treated- and this will teach them to treat you with respect. I have a Kia Sorento 2008 . It used to drive beautifully. It still does. Nowadays the engine alert light comes on so frequently but it still drives beautifully since I don't notice any issue with engine. However things seem to be getting worse. The ESC OFF light will suddenly light up together with engine alert and car stops moving. This could bequite dangerous if on busy highway. My mechanic has no idea. Is there any Kia Sorento owner in Ibadan who can give me some reliable advice ? Thanks |

I really never like to read political articles by celebrity artists , because they tend to be nothing more than political articles by celebrity artists. The truth is that it is the job of an artist to be unrealistic ; that is what they are good at and that is what they are celebrated for - their excellent ability to lose connection with reality. One thing that becomes clear from the episode of the altercation between Oba of Lagos and Ibos is that the Ibos actually believe that communities are built on commerce and therefore carry this attitude wherever they go. And that is why they get into trouble wherever they go. I can only speak for Yoruba as Chimamanda can only speak for Ibo people. I know that we built our communities on enduring values which Ibos seem unable to comprehend. We built our communities on honesty, trust, kings and gods- multiples of them, many being our elevated ancestral heroes. If you are not Yoruba it is easy for you to trample on these values - especially if you have decided not to care . It will be infuriating for us to watch you trample over those values on the basis of your claim that "I can do anything anywhere in Nigeria because I am Nigerian". Yes you theoretically can but a man who dances out of synch to a music he does not understand will look like nothing else but a madman. When you have many madmen on the loose in your house and dancing to their own mad music, the community should panic. Is it true that being Nigerian qualifies you to take anything from anywhere in Nigeria ? If you believe so, you may not be better than just any other terrorist. Chimamanda may put her argument on the basis of " what is done in civilised Western countries". But the fact is that we have more complex political structures in our many tribal communities , and they are the strings which keep us from falling apart culturally. It is for our own good that they must remain there. Citizenship does not anywhere empower you to do as wish without being questioned. Even Obama got reminded of his Kenyan roots as he strived to become president of USA. And for those like Chimamanda who live outside Nigeria, they are never foolish enough not to know that , no matter how long you, a Nigerian , have stayed in another country and you may even have become a citizen, a day is coming that an event will make you wish that you never left your country. The same applies with Nigerians living away from their cultural roots even inside Nigeria - always have it with you that you do not have a place of rest. Lagos is not no man's land , Kano is not no man's land . Enugu is not no man's land. They were founded on distinct cultural values of original settlers. To offend those values will be locally considered a great deal of disrespect . The problem with people like Chimamanda is that she probably believes that people who either have not attained, do not understand, or do not care about her position, posture and values are unintelligent illiterates. It is always the sad message we get from our narrow-minded literary icons.Please let us be sensitive to the feelings of other people. This is very sad. Do you know with all the argument above people still do not read the advertisement above before sending application. The posting says "A good degree in English is ESSENTIAL". We keep getting application from people with degree in Geography, Journalism, Business Administration, Political Science, Insurance etc etc, every degree except English. Is it that they cannot understand English and don't know the meaning of essential ? Records shows that the man complaining above (legendary11) applied for a job as a computer technician from our advertisement . His CV did not show that he knew anything about computer hardware only that he can do coreldraw etc etc. Of course he was not interviewed for the position because we have no need for someone who can do desktop publishing; we already have two . I am told he returned later to demand his CV back and was very abusive to the receptionist. For several weeks he has been sending me private messages on Nairaland which I refused to open and this I think is the reason for the above drama. Is this how Nigerians now search for a job , without paying attention to basic requirements ? Please if you are not qualified for a position do not waste people's time by applying for it. Thank you |
